As a Phoenix-based cinephile & bibliophile, it was a joy & honor to bring on another local film & literature lover in the form of my brilliant friend Patrick Millikin of Scottsdale's world-famous Poisoned Pen Bookstore. Deciding to give listeners an in-depth exploration of a classic noir novel & its adaptations, in this rich, fascinating, & admittedly spoiler-filled conversation, we dive into author William Lindsay Gresham's dark masterpiece NIGHTMARE ALLEY & the 1947 & 2021 film adaptations from directors Edmund Goulding & Guillermo del Toro that followed. I'm incredibly proud of this episode, which gives listeners the experience of a great night of thoughtful discussion at Poisoned Pen from wherever they push play around the world. Enjoy! Bio: Patrick Millikin is a bookseller at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale and a freelance writer and editor. He is the editor of the anthology Phoenix Noir and The Highway Kind: Tales of Fast Cars, Desperate Drivers and Dark Roads, and his work has appeared in Publishers Weekly, Los Angeles Review of Books, and other publications. A longtime devotee of noir fiction, Millikin leads a popular book group called The Hardboiled Discussion Group (now in its twenty-fourth year). Guillermo del Toro adds his own Gothic sensibility to this thrilling new version of an old film noir. After winning the Best Picture Oscar in 2017 for The Shape of Water, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro continues to challenge himself. Turning aside from his customary monster or supernatural-themed stories, he's now made a crime film, a film noir as people often call it, Nightmare Alley. Hollywood already released a picture with that title back in 1947, starring Tyrone Power, and it's a good one, but rather than do a remake, Del Toro went back to the original 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, which includes a lot of material that was changed or not used for the older film. And being the stylist that he is, Del Toro has made a movie of intense visual richness, a dark thriller that grabs the viewer every step of the way. Bradley Cooper plays a cunning grifter named Stanton Carlisle, whom we first see dragging what is clearly a wrapped up dead body into a hole in the floor of a run-down shack, setting it on fire, then walking away while the fire engulfs the house. It's the late 1930s. On the run, Stan stumbles into a traveling circus, and is hired by the owner and operator, played by Willem Dafoe, as an assistant and maintenance guy. He makes friends with a mentalist act, a husband and wife team played by David Strathairn and Toni Collette, who teach him some of their tricks. He also hooks up with Molly, a sideshow performer played by Rooney Mara, and persuades her to go off with him and embark on their own career as a mentalist act, pretending to read minds and reveal secrets on stage and in nightclubs. But then a femme fatale, a psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett, gets him involved in a much more high-stakes scheme. Del Toro loves classic studio-era Hollywood film, to which he's added his own heady mix of gothic symbolism and mystery. He's great at making movies that are made completely on sets, or almost completely. That old style of cinematic illusion in which production design, music, and smooth camera work seduces an audience into its world is a perfect match for this director's talent. As a viewer, I reveled in the artifice of his presentation, the knowledge that this is a movie not detracting one bit from the enjoyment of its style. The film is constantly startling us with vivid tracking shots, close-ups of its often grotesque characters, and unusual camera angles. Nathan Johnson's music provides an ominous undercurrent to the tale of twisted ambition spinning out of control. Bradley Cooper really takes it to the limit—this is among his best work yet, a maniacal yet self-contained portrait of a man always grasping for more. Rooney Mara represents a balancing force, an essentially innocent person tricked into crossing ethical boundaries because of her love for Stan. She's the perfect counterpart to Cooper's intensity. A lot of mainstream filmmaking is merely competent at best, not going out of its way to challenge an audience, but tamely imitating all the other stuff out there. Guillermo del Toro is different. With Nightmare Alley, he demonstrates his commitment to continue making terrifically entertaining movies.
On this episode, we're investigating Stanton Carlisle's rise and fall in all three versions of Nightmare Alley: the original novel, the 1947 movie, and Guillermo del Toro's 2021 adaptation. Topics include: the eerie way in which William Lindsay Gresham's book almost foreshadowed his own demise, the incident in del Toro's past that made him connect so deeply with the source material, notable differences between each iteration, some pushback on the criticism that the most recent version favors style over substance, why the entire point is that you were supposed to see the ending coming from a mile away, and much more! We finish off our Oscars nominations series with Guillermo del Toro's Neo-noir psychological thriller - Nightmare Alley! Based on the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name, Nightmare Alley focuses on the career of Stanton "Stan" Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), who is as charismatic as he is ambitious. Stan leaves the local carnival for the big city with Mary Margaret "Molly" Cahill (Rooney Mara), and the pair quickly find themselves stepping out of their comfort zone. Filled with twists, and often twisted in it's own right... --- LE FILM D'ACTUALITÉ (02:27)NIGHTMARE ALLEY (Guillermo del Toro, 2021) --- LA THÉMATIQUE APPROFONDIE (34:49)NIGHTMARE ALLEY (Edmung Goulding, 1947) (52:50)FREAKS (Tod Browning, 1932) (01:11:52)THE PRESTIGE (Christopher Nolan, 2006) --- Autres films évoqués : MIMIC (Guillermo del Toro, 1997) ; L'ÉCHINE DU DIABLE (Guillermo del Toro, 2001) ; HELLBOY(Guillermo del Toro, 2004) ; LE LABYRINTHE DE PAN (Guillermo del Toro, 2006) ; PACIFIC RIM (Guillermo del Toro, 2013) ; CRIMSON PEAK (Guillermo del Toro, 2015) ; LA FORME DE L'EAU (Guillermo del Toro, 2017) ; PINOCCHIO (Guillermo del Toro & Mark Gustafson, 2022) ; DRACULA (Tod Browning, 1931); HUGO CABRET (Martin Scorsese, 2011); DE L'EAU POUR LES ÉLÉPHANTS (Francis Lawrence, 2011); BRONCO BILLY (Clint Eastwood, 1980) ; MEMENTO (Christopher Nolan, 2000) ; INTERSTELLAR (Christopher Nolan, 2014) ; BATMAN & ROBIN (Joel Schumacher, 1997) --- Titre d'outro : Destruction Babies, Shutoku Mukai Exposed est un podcast animé par l'équipe de www.filmexposure.ch : Sébastien Gerber, Thomas Gerber, Alexandre Rallo.

Welcome to the Speakeasy! Nightmare Alley is a 1947 American film noir directed by Edmund Goulding from a screenplay by Jules Furthman.[2] Based on William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel of the same name, it stars Tyrone Power, with Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray, and Helen Walker in supporting roles. Power, wishing to expand beyond the romantic and swashbuckler roles that brought him to fame, requested 20th Century Fox's studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck to buy the rights to the novel so he could star as the unsavory lead[3] "The Great Stanton", a scheming carnival barker. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/support

Guillermo del Toro has been called the leading fantasy filmmaker of this century. His movies include “Pan's Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” and “The Shape of Water,” which won four Academy Awards in 2018, including Best Picture and Best Director. He joined David Remnick to talk about his new film, “Nightmare Alley,” along with Bradley Cooper, who plays Stanton Carlisle, a grifter who seems to want to do the right thing but is unable to resist the pull of the con. Based on a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, “Nightmare Alley” is del Toro's first film that isn't somewhere in the fantasy genre; its dark depiction of American life is grounded in film noir. “We went to the root of it, American existentialism,” del Toro says, citing sources like the novel “The Day of the Locust” and the paintings of Edward Hopper. “It's a discovery of America reckoning with its own ideals and its reality,” and a sense of tragic fate. “We knew that we needed to create not an up-and-down structure but a very steady, inexorable ramp.” The film, which was released in theatres in December, during the surge of the Omicron variant, begins streaming February 1st.
In the latest episode of Captured on Celluloid, Adam and Andrew discuss Guillermo Del Toro's Nightmare Alley and its struggles at the box office, as well as Edmund Goulding's 1947 adaptation of the same William Lindsay Gresham novel.
In episode 139 of The Movie Robcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis take a walk down the dark and deadly Nightmare Alley. The new movie from the brilliant Guillermo del Toro is based on William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel, previously made as a film noir in 1947, and features an dazzling cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman, Richard Jenkins and others. Cooper plays a drifter who has a talent for mentalism, and wants to move from the travelling carnival to which he's hitched for the bright lights of New York, where his "clairvoyance" will earn him the big bucks. But, pride and ambition go before a fall and del Toro has created a world light on forgiveness. So, what do the Robs think of Nightmare Alley? Unfortunately, their powers of mental projection are a little rusty, so you'll have to listen in to find out. They promise it's worth the journey...
The latest from Guillermo Del Toro, Nightmare Alley is a psychological thriller based on a William Lindsay Gresham book from 1946 - which is also the era it's set in. Circling a tale of grifters and cons, it also boasts a huge cast, including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette and Willem Dafoe. We get into whether this film works for us, and got under our skin.
This week, Carsten and Stephen take a look at Guillermo del Toro's new blend of horror and film noir in his reimagining of the collision between the side show and high society, Nightmare Alley, inspired by the 1947 film starring Tyrone Power and the original novel by William Lindsay Gresham. The show also takes a look at the original film and other cinematic trips to the carnival and travelling performers like Tod Browning's Freaks and the sound remake of Browning's The Unholy Three; 1980's Carny with Jodie Foster, Gary Busey and Robbie Robertson; Disney's Something Wicked This Way Comes and a couple of overseas classics, Fellini's La Strada and Bergman's The Magician. Guillermo del Toro has emphasized that his new NIGHTMARE ALLEY is not a remake of Edmund Goulding's 1947 noir of the same name, but rather an attempt to more faithfully adapt the 1946 novel by author William Lindsay Gresham, about a carnival con artist who expands his hustle into spiritualism and subsequently opens himself up to disaster. Nonetheless, this week in preparation of our discussion of del Toro's NIGHTMARE we're taking a deeper look at Goulding's, with an assist from our friend and critic Noel Murray, to see how it follows and diverts from the noir tradition, particularly in its trio of distinctive female characters and performances, and how the morality of its tacked-on ending undercuts its deeper themes. Plus, our recent episode on THE POWER OF THE DOG has inspired a lot of feedback, which we begin digging into with some thoughts on its Hitchcockian and literary connections. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about either version of NIGHTMARE ALLEY, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. It is a study of the lowest depths of showbiz and its sleazy inhabitants—the dark, shadowy world of a second rate carnival filled with hustlers, scheming grifters, and Machiavellian femmes fatales. Gresham attributed the origin of Nightmare Alley to conversations he had with a former carnival worker while they were both serving as volunteers with the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Gresham wrote the novel, his first, while working as an editor for a "true crime," pulp magazine in New York City during the 1940s. He outlined the plot and wrote the first six chapters over a period of two years, then finished the book in four months. Each chapter is represented by a different Tarot card. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/needs/message

Well, folks, things have heated up considerably since I started doing these reviews last fall. I've reached out to so many great distributors and all of them have been kind, helpful, and generous with what they allow access to and there are some genuinely amazing new discoveries this past month. Joining the round-up we have Arrow Video with its release of post-war Japanese New Wave director Yasuzo Masumura's cult satire Giant and Toys, a movie about avarice and the water/vinegar mix of western influence on Japanese salaryman culture. In association with Arrow, MVD's “Rewind Collection” has put out an extended director's cut of a 1997 Hong Kong action-cinema-inspired barnburner, Drive. Criterion comes in strong with its own underrated film in the Tyrone Power carny-noir Nightmare Alley, based off of the controversial and extremely racy novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham. Fun City Editions returns this month with a little seen Robert Forrest/Nancy Kwan two-hander called Walking the Edge, a low-budget and slick-sounding neo-noir and revenge film. However, our main segment focuses on two art-centric docs released by Kino Lorber: the impassioned and red-hot Chris McKim documentary about queer East Village artist David Wojnarowicz, Wojanrowicz: F**k You You F*ggot F**ker, as well as the more whimsical and pragmatic look into graphic artist M.C. Escher's process, life, and dreams with M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity. Joining me for that segment will be the lovely and engaging new Operations and Visual Arts Manager at the Lotus Education and Arts Foundation, Amanda Hutchins! Honestly, May has probably been the most interesting month to date, filled with movies packing much style, heft, and aesthetic. Give it a listen and I'm sure you'll find something to watch while the cicadas hum in the background as spring winds down and summer starts peeking its head through. If you want to read my thoughts on some films that didn't quite make the cut, head on over to the IU Cinema Blog and check those out!
