In this episode of The Maritime Executive's podcast series, editor in chief Tony Munoz spoke with four top officers of Coalition Task Force Sentinel (CTF Sentinel), an eight-nation maritime security partnership that guards against malign state-sponsored activity in the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, along with all points in between. The organization was created in the wake of the serious maritime security incidents in the Gulf of Oman in 2019, including the suspected limpet mine attacks on tankers in June 2019 and the Iranian seizure of the UK-flagged tanker Stena Impero in September. Our conversation included Commodore Adrian Fryer of the British Royal Navy, the task force's commander; Lieutenant Commander Dudley Malster of the British Royal Navy, the head of its operations department; Lieutenant Commander Danielle Centeno of the U.S. Navy, its maritime trade officer; and  Lieutenant Commander Charles Banks, the Task Force's Public Affairs Officer. For more details on CTF Sentinel's mission, listen in.

On the 4th of July, 2019, the Iranian tanker Grace One was detained by UK forces in Gibraltar on suspicion of EU sanction violations and on the 19th of July a British flag tanker, the Stena Impero was detained by Iran's Islamic revolutionary guard Corps. Track forward to August 2020, and we find Iranian forces once again, boarding another vessel this time a Liberian flag tanker, the MV Wila.  Are these events connected and should shipowners be concerned with the apparent escalation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf. We'll aim to answer these questions with Cormac McGarry senior analyst at Control Risks and Jonathan Wood lead analyst for North America and deputy global research director for Control risks.

The release Sunday of an audio recording has shed new light on the seizure of a British-flagged tanker at the hands of Iran's Revolutionary Guard as tensions flare in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The audio released by maritime security risk firm Dryad Global shows that a British frigate was too far away from the targeted tanker to keep it from being diverted into an Iranian port despite U.K. efforts to keep it from being boarded. On the recording, a stern-voiced British naval officer insists that the U.K.-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero must be allowed to sail through the Strait of Hormuz even as Iranian paramilitary forces demand — successfully — that the vessel change course. The audio shows how Britain's once mighty Royal Navy was unable to prevent the ship's seizure, which has been condemned by Britain and its European allies as they continue to call for a reduction of tensions in the vital waterway. The free flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is of critical importance to the world's energy supplies because one-fifth of all global crude exports pass through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.In the recording, an Iranian officer can be heard telling the Stena Impero to change course, saying: "You obey, you will be safe.""Alter your course to 360 degrees immediately, over," the Iranian officer says, adding that the ship is wanted for security reasons.A British naval officer from the HMS Montrose frigate that was patrolling the area around the Strait of Hormuz is heard telling the Stena Impero, which had a crew of 23 on board, that its passage must be allowed."Sir, I reiterate that as you are conducting transit passage in a recognized international strait, under international law your passage must not be impaired, intruded, obstructed or hampered," the unidentified British officer says. The British officer then tells an Iranian patrol boat: "Please confirm that you are not intending to violate international law by unlawfully attempting to board the MV Stena."His words did nothing to deter the Iranians.British officials say the HMS Montrose was roughly 60 minutes from the scene when the Iranians took control of the tanker, too far away to intervene effectively.Iranian officials say the seizure of the British oil tanker was a justified response to Britain's role in impounding an Iranian supertanker two weeks earlier off the coast of Gibraltar, a British overseas territory located on the southern tip of Spain.Friday's seizure comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran stemming from President Donald Trump's decision last year to pull the U.S. from Iran's nuclear accord with world powers and reinstate sweeping sanctions. The U.S. has also expanded its military presence in the region, while Iran has begun openly exceeding the uranium enrichment levels set in the nuclear accord to try to pressure Europe into alleviating the pain caused by the sanctions.European nations, which are trying to save the nuclear deal and keep Iran from isolation, have tried to come up with ways to keep trading with Iran but have run smack into Trump's sanctionsBritish Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says the government plans to spell out its response in a briefing to Parliament on Monday. Officials have said a military response is extremely unlikely and Britain has taken steps to bolster its diplomatic efforts. The tanker seizure comes at a ticklish time for Britain, which on Wednesday will see a new prime minister replace Theresa May. The two contenders for the job are front-runner Boris Johnson and Hunt, who has a key role in dealing with the shipping crisis.British officials say they have no good military options, especially because the tanker is in a secure Iranian port with a heavy military presence. Defense minister Tobias Ellwood on Sunday reiterated calls for a tamping down of tensions."Well, firstly we need to try and de-escalate this," he told Sky News. "There has been a ratcheting up of tensio...

On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Dr. Jack Rasmus, professor of economics at Saint Mary's College of California; Jim Kavanagh, political analyst and commentator and editor of The Polemicist; and Caleb Maupin, journalist, and political analyst. It's Friday, so that means it's panel time. Disputes between the Trump administration and Puerto Rican leaders over rebuilding costs and the unsteady implementation of a new process to approve project funding have severely hamstrung recovery from Hurricane Maria. Out of some 10,000 schools, bridges and other damaged sites dotting the island, funds for only nine have gotten the green light from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as of Wednesday. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló faces calls to resign over two separate scandals: a fraudulent scheme involving federal funds that ensnared two former top aides; and the release of private chat messages between the governor and other top aides that were insulting and inflammatory.US President Donald Trump is confident that the drone the US took down in the Strait of Hormuz this week was Iranian. Speaking at the White House Friday, Trump said the US is prepared to respond to other provocations from Iran and warned them not to do anything foolish. The US Navy warship USS Boxer brought down the drone as it came within 1,000 yards of the vessel. Pentagon officials say numerous calls to "stand down" were ignored. Iranian officials say the drone wasn't theirs. However, Iran claims it seized a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. State media reports the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps captured the oil tanker Stena Impero on Friday for violating international regulations. The move comes a day after Trump said US forces took down the Iranian drone.
