The comedian and podcaster Stevie Martin is currently battling it out in the latest series of Channel 4's award winning show Taskmaster - you might have enjoyed her "most snooty possession" which was a portrait of her pet tortoise in military uniform. She'll be here to tell us all about getting "the call" and her favourite games...sorry... tasks. Its also tricky-book-titles week on Loose Ends. The award winning novelist and screenwriter Emma Jane Unsworth likes a one word name for her books - the best selling Adults and Animals, which went on to become a feature film starring Holliday Grainger, and scooped Emma a British Independent Film Award - for the script. Her new book is called Slags, Stuart'll be finding out why. And travel writer Ben Aitken went to twelve of the least popular spots in the UK and Ireland for his book - Sh**ty Breaks. He'll be explaining the joys of travelling in the opposite direction to everybody else and still managing to get a great instagram photo. Music will be from the Jess Gillam Trio and former Welsh Music Prize winner Georgia Ruth. Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced by Olive Clancy

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the fabulous comic (stage and sketch), writer and podcaster STEVIE MARTIN!A glorious comical conversation with Pip and Stevie, who is someone to keep up with in the current comedy scene for real. You can actually make a start on that this year if you're in Edinburgh at the Fringe so be alert for that! Stevie made a huge name around the pandemical times via some inspired and hilarious sketch work (often in collaboration with the awesome Lola-Rose Maxwell), but it was more like a natural phenomenon that was waiting to happen. Stevie's been on the grind for a while now and this chat hints at the hard work involved, including building of audiences, podcasting, Fringe madness, journalism, sketch writing and directing, the online forest, ad work, ComComPod, and so much more. Digital frustration affects most of us, which probably explains why comedian Stevie Martin's sketches went viral in lockdown. This week, Mickey catches up with her to talk about all sorts, including her new YouTube pilot, screen time, and how her bum is. Hannah's been on the Zoom with writer, actor and director Daniella Isaacs to chat out about her new BBC audio drama People Who Knew Me and why they both keep forgetting to take their earphones out. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's looking ahead to the French Open and in Rated or Dated, we've been watching 2003's Daddy Day Care, with mixed results. I had such a fun time talking with Stevie about her masterful work as Makeup Department Head on RESPECT and engaging in real talk about the chaos on set. Stevie talks to us about thinking out of the box and on the spot on set to problem solve, recreating an icon and all the managing the pressure that comes along with it, remembering where you came from and being a true leader who manages a team to succeed in mastering a look. She tells us about the moment she fell in love with makeup and decided to never look back and gives brilliant advice for artists everywhere. Learn about Passion over Paycheck and hear what Stevie's secret weapon was to provide Jennifer Hudson with Aretha's signature ummm…“glisten”. Stevie Martin and Lawrence Davis are two very well-established makeup and hair designers, having traversed the worlds of film and television with equal success and yes, respect. Martin made her start in makeup designing when she started doing makeup for magazines before building her way to TV and film. She was one of the key makeup artists on projects such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, then returning for Mockingjay – Part 2, The Nice Guys and Sleepless, where she grew a reputation of her minimalist style and using no prosthetics. Davis comes from a very ranged background of work, having even won an Emmy for his work on Hairspray Live! He went on to being one of the key hairstylists for daytime and primetime TV shows and specials like the Grammys, the Academy Awards, American Idol. From this he went onto movies and became a key hairstylist for projects such as In Time, Flight and Dumb and Dumber To. Through all of this he started working frequently with Jennifer Hudson, which is how he landed the role of Hair Designer Head for Respect. We were curious how they both went about the daunting task of transforming Jennifer Hudson and Marlon Wayans into their respective roles as Aretha Franklin and Ted White, especially when the filmmakers asked for no prosthetics. Benji Bury had a sit-down discussion with them about how they climbed this high mountain. Respect is currently available to rent or buy wherever you stream movies.
Trying to get your life together? Got three dead houseplants, no debit card, and an exploded yoghurt in your bag? Useful, funny and life-affirming, Nobody Panic is an instruction manual for anyone with absolutely no idea what they're doing. From the creators of the critically acclaimed podcast comes a series of How To guides for everything from job interviews to leaving a WhatsApp group, from understanding the oven to dealing with your best friend's new (astoundingly dull) partner. There's also a poem about taxes. Comedians and professional panickers Tessa Coates and Stevie Martin are here to help you learn from their many, many mistakes, and remind you that when it comes to life, we're all in this together - so nobody panic.

Stevie Martin has been generating excellent material for years, and is now starting to break through due to her jaw-droppingly funny online videos, packed with punchlines and with a genuinely unique flavour. We talk about the huge amount of time and prep that goes into her work, as she battles to feel like a “proper comedian” in an industry that prioritises certain styles, backgrounds and looks. We also explore her brilliant former sketch outfit Massive Dad, and whether their aesthetic made them “unapproachable” as performers; the relative loneliness of stand-up; and trying to love Edinburgh in the way that it deserves to be loved…Insiders:35 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Stevie on her murky past as an Edinburgh Fringe reviewer! She also shares some surprising insights about what works on Twitter and why, the inside editorial secrets of content creators, and we find out why her next Edinburgh poster might sell her in a very different way than previous years.Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for this and much more, including the exclusive Insiders Q&As with Nish Kumar, James Acaster and Fern Brady and the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet. In this episode we're in conversation with Gilbert Hill. Gilbert is a privacy technologist and he's talking at the 2021 Summit in May.Most recently Gilbert was CEO and Advisor to Tapmydata, a start-up building consumer-grade tools for people to exercise data rights, with blockchain keeping score. Before becoming CEO of TapMyData, Gilbert founded Optanon and, as the MD, grew it to become the market leader in the provision of website auditing and cookie compliance solutions in the UK and EU. Gilbert is a Fellow and Senior Tutor on Privacy and Ethics at the Institute of Data and Marketing.During our conversation Gilbert explains how, after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in anthropology and archaeology, he became a privacy technologist. We discuss how he conceives of privacy and we talk about Tapmydata and how it enables consumers to exercise their data rights — contrary to popular opinion at the time that people didn't care about their data — and the advantage for companies who hold it.Gilbert talks about the growing movement to re-emancipating citizens in terms of their data and its value, and the concept of data unions, which is enshrined in the EU's Digital Markets Act. We also discuss the role that blockchain and crypto have to play in data privacy. Lastly, Gilbert shares some of his recommended reads and why he's looking forward to the summit.Follow Gilbert on Twitter @GilbertHill and read his writing at gilberthill.medium.com.Mentioned in our conversation:Covid-19 and the cult of privacy by Daniel MillerAn Artificial Revolution: On Power, Politics and AI by Ivana BartolettiThe End of Trust (McSweeney's 54) - features an interview with Ed Snowden explaining blockchain to his lawyer.Privacy is Power: Why and How You Should Take Back Control of Your Data by Carissa VélizThe Cryptocurrency Revolution: Finance in the Age of Bitcoin, Blockchains and Tokens by Rhian LewisAnd lastly enjoy comedian Stevie Martin's funny video, which is a biting commentary on the “accept all” cookie option.

Is there someone you think is brilliant? Who you're firmly rooting for? Whose every success delights you, no questions asked? Then you may be feeling mudita. It's a beaut concept, and mostly affiliated with Buddhist teachings. The idea is a vicarious joy you feel on behalf of someone else; you have no self-interest for the other person, you're just there, on their team, by their side, willing them to do well.In this episode I speak to sisters Gina Martin and Stevie Martin, who I'd suspected might identify with this emotion. Stevie is a phenomenal comedian (check her sketches on twitter at @5tevieM) and Gina is an incredible activist (you can follow her work on twitter at @GinaMartinUK). I knew they'd always looked out for each other, and had been supportive of each other's successes, but I wondered whether it went deeper than that. Luckily, they were very willing to open up and explore their feelings for one another (and how it maybe hadn't always been so easy to find that wholesome joy..!) Obviously the podcast is all about discovering the emotion and the journey it's taken my guests on, but I'm aware there's loads more to learn about the feeling of mudita and the Buddhist teachings- I just didn't have time to fit it all in! If you're interested in a little more of the history and theology, some websites I found helpful were:https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/various/wheel170.htmlhttps://www.learnreligions.com/mudita-sympathetic-joy-449704Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/getting-emotional. From hosting their podcast Nobody Panic, to being in comedy trio Massive Dad, writing scripts and articles, and putting on Edinburgh shows, Stevie and Tessa have a lot of things to juggle. The pair tell Andi Peters and Simon Lambert their tales of living on a shoestring to get ahead in the London publishing world, including sharing a one-bedroom flat and sleeping under the kitchen table. The duo also explain how to set up an Edinburgh Fringe show and why it is similar to launching a small business, from fronting the cost to book a venue, to selling tickets and hoping you can break even or maybe even make a little money. And Tessa tells of the difficulties of trying to get a mortgage, even with a contract to write a pilot season of a new show for US television. In the Making the Money Work series, in partnership with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, we talk earnings, budgeting and savings with those whose lives and finances roam far from the norm. The five podcasts are hosted by Andi Peters, alongside This is Money’s Simon Lambert, and every fortnight you can listen to a new interview with different special guests talking about their financial lives.

Stevie Martin from the Nobody Panic podcast joins us in the studio / Kelsey's flat this week. The chat is about 'Being an Anxious Person'. What does anxiety mean? What can we do about the anxious thoughts that race around our heads at times? And why are our brains SO clever yet also SO easily distracted by just...kind of...counting things that we see? Joining Anna for the inaugural You Do You Show is journalist-writer-podcast host-comedian-actress and all-round excellent human Stevie Martin. Stevie first popped up in Anna's life as one-third of the comedy trio Massive Dad (the performance Anna caught involved a dance-routine involving vegetables if memory serves her), and then again as co-host of 10/10 podcast Nobody Panic. Next month, she's taking her debut show Stevie Martin: Vol. 1 to the Edinburgh Festival. Listen in as the pair have a chat about the ways in which pop culture -- from first ever celebrity crushes to teen ideas of what made someone 'cool' -- has shaped who Stevie is and what she's doing now. Is there a right to die, and if so, who has this right? A few countries, such as Switzerland, have legalized forms of assisted dying, but others, like the UK, have banned such practices. With the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the US Supreme Court, this topic has also sprung up again in America, as the only book Gorsuch has published makes an argument against assisted dying. This week's guest is Stevie Martin, a PhD student in Cambridge's Law faculty, who is researching whether the UK's ban on assisted dying conflicts with the European Convention on Human Rights.
Stevie Martin is a very very funny lady and my friend. She writes for women's publications such as Broadly, The Debrief, Refinery29 and others. She's also an actress and comedian (both writing and performing) and one third of the hilarious sketch group Massive Dad, represented by United Agents. We speak about creative careers, how to label yourself at work, improvisation, the competitiveness nature of the comedy and TV industry, and working in a writer's room.
