Wherever Roshaneh Zafar went in Pakistan in the early 1990s, documenting World Bank social development projects, women told her the same thing: the water and sanitation are fine, but what about economic opportunity?Zafar tells Tim Phillips how that question led her to train with Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, and then back to Pakistan to found Kashf Foundation in 1996 — the country's first specialised microfinance institution for women. Thirty years on, Kashf serves more than one million clients, has covered six million lives through micro-health insurance, and has financed over 3,000 low-cost private schools. Zafar describes a model that long ago outgrew its Grameen origins: customised for Pakistan's diversity, run on a partnership rather than a hierarchical footing, and now embracing climate risk, ultra-poor programmes and AI-assisted credit decisions.The episode also confronts the question: Does microfinance actually empower women? A development economist by training, she worked at the World Bank before leaving to found Kashf in 1996 after training under Muhammad Yunus at Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. Her work spans microfinance, micro-insurance, women's economic empowerment, low-cost private education and behaviour change communication. Research and context cited in this episodeGrameen Bank and the Grameen model. Founded by Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh in 1983, Grameen Bank pioneered group-based lending to poor women without requiring collateral, on the premise that social accountability within borrower groups could substitute for asset security. Yunus received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Kashf was established as a Grameen replicator but diverged significantly in its approach: hiring women loan officers from the outset, replacing the group hierarchy with a peer partnership model (using the Urdu term baji, meaning sister, for both client and staff), and adapting products for Pakistan's religious, linguistic and cultural diversity.The 2008 microfinance delinquency crisis in Pakistan. Over-indebtedness, predatory lending practices and the absence of a credit information bureau led to a sector-wide delinquency crisis in Pakistan in 2008. Following the crisis, regulators, lenders and the Pakistan Microfinance Network introduced enhanced consumer protection standards and a credit bureau to prevent multiple borrowing. Kashf now limits lending to clients with no more than two active loans from any provider.Banerjee et al. (2015) randomised controlled trial. The paper, a randomised evaluation of a microcredit expansion in Hyderabad, India by Spandana Sphoorty, found no statistically significant effect on women's empowerment, health, education or consumption over an 18-to-24-month follow-up period. It became the most-cited challenge to microfinance's development impact. Zafar's counter-argument turns on time horizon: empowerment, she argues, is a decade-scale process that short-panel RCTs cannot capture. A University of Minnesota longitudinal analysis of ten years of Kashf client data found a statistically significant positive correlation between the number of loans taken and business income, and between savings behaviour and subsequent business investment.Behaviour change communication: theater and television. Kashf has used street theater for thirty years to communicate on topics including child marriage, girls' education, reproductive health and insurance take-up. After Zafar attended a conference session on the impact of telenovelas on gender norms in Brazil and Mexico, the foundation moved into television drama production, covering topics including child sexual abuse, human trafficking and cybercrime. A child sexual abuse drama prompted a legal notice from PEMRA (the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority), which was successfully contested. The dramas are produced with a media and creative team to ensure sensitive handling of difficult subjects.The gender bond and gender sukuk. In 2005, Zafar rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The experience prompted a long-term ambition to connect micro women entrepreneurs to capital markets. Kashf subsequently issued a gender bond listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, followed by a gender sukuk (Sharia-compliant bond) listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange — the first such instrument linking Pakistani microfinance to international Islamic capital markets.Low-cost private schools. Research by Kashf found that clients, once they had access to income, were moving their children from public to low-cost private schools; teacher absenteeism in private schools was far lower. Further research showed 70% of these schools were run by women. Forty percent of the time, oncology care is not being delivered in concordance with guidelines. FORTY PERCENT! As our guest today explains, that's not because of bad doctors. It's because oncology care changes rapidly and because almost eighty percent of patients are being seen by a community oncologist, a physician who is responsible for treating ALL types of cancer, instead of a specialist. How can we address that? Well, as Dr. Yousuf Zafar explains, there are really three options. The patient travels to an NCI Cancer Center to seek a second opinion. This is obviously expensive and inconvenient and out of scope for many patients.  The patient's provider calls another oncologist in their network consult on the case. These relationships are critical but not universal. We can formalize this provider-to-provider framework and have it paid for by a patient's employer. This is the basis for AccessHope. Today's guest is a practicing oncologist and adjunct professor at Duke University, and chief medical officer at AccessHope, where he focuses on expanding access to expert cancer care for patients treated outside of academic centers. While National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers deliver superior outcomes, they treat only 20 percent of cancer patients. Dr. Zafar is working to extend that expertise to the remaining 80 percent.

Tahra Zafar is a costume and creature effects designer. She designed the Paddington Bear puppet featured in the hit West End production Paddington: The Musical.Born into a theatre family, she grew up with an Armenian American father who worked as a choreographer in the first West End production of West Side Story, and a mother who moved from a career as a ballerina to theatre work around the world. Her interest in making began early, helping her father with practical projects such as restoring their house, even learning to build walls and spending her spare time model making, with Airfix creations suspended from her bedroom ceiling.After studying theatre design at Central Saint Martins, she began her career making theatre costumes. She spent some time at the Jim Henson creature workshop where she made some of the creatures for the first Harry Potter film including Hedwig the owl and Scabbers the rat.After her daughter was born, Tahra worked on some of the characters for In the Night Garden with her daughter, a willing judge of what worked for toddlers. In 2012, Tahra was in charge of 23,000 costumes for the London 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. This role included an audience with the late Queen to ensure the wig and dress were correct for Her Majesty's stunt double when that iconic skydive was performed at the Olympic opening ceremony. Pastor Zafar Bhatti founded Jesus World Mission Church ministry. Back in 2012, he was falsely accused of insulting Islam. Authorities finally overturned his conviction this month, releasing him last Wednesday. The 62-year-old pastor died days after from cardiac arrest at his home.   The British Asian Christian Association helped defend the pastor in court. The organization stated, “Though his earthly journey has ended, Zafar's faith, endurance, and ultimate vindication remain a powerful testament to hope in Christ amidst persecution.” Nigerian Anglican Church appalled that woman chosen to be new church head The Anglican Church of Nigeria declared spiritual independence from the Church of England on Tuesday. The announcement came in response to the Church of England's appointment of Sarah Mullally as the Archbishop of Canterbury. She is the first woman to hold the position. She also supports abortion and faux homosexual marriage.  Archbishop Henry Ndukuba is the Primate of the Church of Nigeria. He stated, “[Mullally's] appointment marks a tragic departure from biblical orthodoxy. . . . We remain Anglicans — but not under Canterbury. Our loyalty is to Christ and the truth of His Word, not to institutions that have abandoned it.” Police arrest man intent on blowing up church with Supreme Court Justices In the United States, police arrested a man on Sunday who had hundreds of explosive devises outside of St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Police made the arrest before an annual service traditionally attended by U.S. Supreme Court justices.  According to court records, the man's notebook expressed animosity toward Supreme Court justices, the Catholic Church, Jews, and immigration enforcement officials.  FBI cuts ties with God-hating Southern Poverty Law Center The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced last week it has cut ties with the Southern Poverty Law Center. The far-left nonprofit is known for listing conservative and Christian organizations as “hate groups,”  primarily because they affirm God's design for sexuality and marriage. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X, “The Southern Poverty Law Center long ago abandoned civil rights work and turned into a partisan smear machine. Their so-called ‘hate map' has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence. That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership.” Florida, Louisiana, Missouri & Texas sue FDA over mail-order Abortion Kill Pill The state of Louisiana joined a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration on Monday.  Florida, Missouri, and Texas are also on the case. They are challenging the FDA's 2023 policy that allows mail-order abortion drugs. Louisiana's filing states, “Every year, doctors and activists in states like California and New York mail a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved abortion drug called mifepristone to thousands of Louisiana residents for the express purpose of causing abortions in Louisiana that are blatantly unlawful.” Gold hit $4,000 per ounce first time ever On Tuesday, spot gold prices hit $4,000 per ounce for the first time in history.  That's up 50% from January. Silver is up 60% this year. The demand for gold is up as investors hedge against economic uncertainty.  Financial analyst Rhona O'Connell told Reuters, “Background factors are much the same as before, in terms of geopolitical uncertainty, with the added spice of the (U.S.) government shutdown.” Prison Fellowship and Bible League to send 620,000 Bibles to prisoners And finally, Prison Fellowship International and Bible League International are partnering to distribute over half a million Bibles. The 620,000 Bibles will go to prisoners in 20 countries over the next five years. Frank Lofaro with Prison Fellowship International said, “God's Word has the power to reach prisoners in their darkest moments with the light of Jesus Christ.
