On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by author, folklorist, musician and songwriter Paul Weatherhead, whose book Weird Calderdale is a must-have for fans of Yorkshire folklore!Paul is a native of the Calder Valley in Yorkshire, and was brought up in Hebden Bridge. After finishing school and his BA, Paul spent several years teaching in Greece, Moscow and Northern Siberia before he returned to Calder Valley in the late 1990s. With a longstanding obsession with the weird history of the area he grew up, he wrote Weird Calderdale, the first edition of which was released in 2003 which went on to become a local best-seller.After earning his MA, Paul's writing then began to be published in various magazines and journals, including Psychology Today, The Skeptic, Northern Life and Psychedelic Scene. He frequently writes on topics including mass hysteria, delusions, weird history and folklore. And on the mass hysteria and delusions front, his latest book, released in September 2024, is called Social Panics and Phantom Attackers – A Study of Imaginary Assailants, which was co-written with renowned sociologist Robert Bartholomew: a mega-interesting topic which we discuss in some depth during this episode. As well as his research interests, Paul is a musician and songwriter, playing electric mandolin with cult folk rock band The Ukrainians for many years, as well as composing solo work consisting of comic folk horror songs inspired by 60s psychedelia, 80s video nasties and the Hebden Bridge Times. All of which makes Paul the ideal person to speak to about Yorkshire, and about folk music, too. To learn more about Paul and his work and books, and to read his excellent blog, do be sure to visit his website at paulweatherhead.com.Otherwise, settle in for a chat which engages with topics including local witches battling Cliff Richard, Yorkshire's zombies, the Halifax guillotine, local anti-hero Tom Bell, unidentified flying objects, and so much more! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. When Leidos unveiled its current structure in the fall of 2023, chief executive Tom Bell emphasized repeatability as how the company would approach its digital transformation efforts for agencies. That means Leidos has a single business segment dedicated to digital modernization and one that covers the company's entire customer base. In this episode, Leidos' digital modernization president Steve Hull explains why the company decided to put all of that work under one roof and how it defines “repeatability” in its offerings for agencies.Leidos has four other customer-facing sectors that Hull's team is in close contact with to find out what their particular client sets need, as he explains to our Ross Wilkers in a conversation that of course covers much of today's major tech trends like artificial intelligence and autonomy.
In this clip, legendary percussionist Ed Shea takes us back to his days at Sigma Sound Studios. Ed paints a vivid picture of the studio's bustling energy, where top-tier musicians like Bobby Eli and Tom Bell seamlessly crafted iconic records.Ed shares insider details about what it was like working with legends like Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, recording albums for Lou Rawls, and navigating the laid-back yet precise atmosphere of Sigma. He talks about how the sessions were structured—three sessions a day, double scale pay, and often a relaxed schedule where creativity could flow uninterrupted. He also offers a practical tip for musicians: always be prepared. He recounts how he kept a manuscript book handy to quickly jot down parts when Leon Huff or other producers needed overdubs on the fly. Ed's approach to adapting to each session's unique demands highlights the professionalism and versatility that have defined his remarkable career.Ed also compares the relaxed recording environment to the high-pressure world of subbing on Broadway, giving you a glimpse into the different dynamics of studio and theater drumming.Subscribe today for more and to be notified when new content is released:Broadway Drumming 101 is a reader-supported publication. Can organs (and organists), choirs, instrumental music groups, and praise bands exist in harmony? This question was considered by an expert panel at the first Church Times Festival of Faith and Music in York (News, 3 May), held in partnership with the Royal School of Church Music. The panellists, who all have experience of traditional and contemporary styles, were: Peter Asprey, Director of Music at Holy Sepulchre London, the National Musicians' Church in the heart of the City of London. The Revd Pete Gunstone, Minor Canon for Worship and Nurture at Bradford Cathedral. Tom Bell, a freelance organist who is also Director for the North of England, North Wales, and the Isle of Man at the Royal College of Organists. For episode 44 of the National Health Executive podcast, we were joined by Tom Bell, who has held management roles in the public, private and third sector – working specifically with the NHS in digital, telehealth and now as a patient safety partner.Tom offered his insight into what patient safety actually means for the NHS, the make-up of the NHS when it comes to patient safety, how data can factor into decision-making, and what the future could/should look like.“The lack of data in the NHS is criminal – if I wind you back through the mists of time, when I worked for Carlsberg at the turn of the century, we had access to lots of data about lots of things,” explained Tom.He continued: “I could sit at my desk and download, in almost real time, who'd bought what, which accounts were up, which accounts were down, which were in profit etc. – that data was there. That was a company, albeit a large company and very well-run company, that was selling sugary alcoholic liquid…“When I came into the NHS a number of years later, I remember saying to my director of strategy, ‘Where's the dashboard I can access?' and he looked at me as if I was speaking Swahili.”Listen to the full podcast to learn more about the possibilities for the NHS.

A couple of months ago, we released a documentary by investigative Soosty, Soosty Carpripe, about a very brave woman called Emily Curnt, who met what she thought was someone on a dating app, who claimed he was playing Shrek in a touring production of the musical Shrek. But this was a lie: in fact, Emily Curnt was being ShrekFished. The reaction to this documentary was so overwhelming - not just from listeners who believed it to be one of the most award-worthy documentaries of recent years, but from other women who had suffered exactly the same fate. This programme, and its attendant awards submissions, is dedicated to the bravery of these women.Sound Heap was created and hosted by John-Luke Roberts, and featured Tom Bell, Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Josh Gondelman, Kieran Hodgson, Rosie Holt, Sooz Kempner, Anna Leong Brophy, Emily Lloyd-Saini, Hal Lublin, Sarah Morgan, Eleanor Morton, John Norris, Benjamin Partridge, David Reed, Marjolein Robertson, Isy Suttie and Lorna Rose Treen. What do ISVs have to do with banking in the near future of fintech? According to Maast CEO Tom Bell, just about everything! For those of you who may not know, Maast (which actually stands for Money as A Service +) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Synovus bank with a mission to create a true embedded finance platform for ISV and SaaS providers. When asked to expand on what their platform is capable of, Tom says “imagine everything you know about embedded payments and extend that into other banking products. Our goal is to take the bank itself and embed it into the software providers platform.”As far as the Synovus relationship impacting their competitive advantage in the marketplace, it actually serves to create one of their biggest value ads. Not only do they take a lot of friction out of the embedded model by enabling Synovus to take their product and distribute it nationwide in a much more efficient manner, they also provide a tremendous benefit to their ISVs and SaaS customers in that they already have all the regulatory, risk, and compliance mandates covered comprehensively on their end due to their relationship with the bank. It really offers much more of a plug-and-play model, allowing the ISV/SaaS to be 100% confident that the Maast platform is in line with regulatory compliance and requiring them to do nothing more than code to their API.Tune in to hear Tom talking about the true definition of embedded finance as it relates to the comprehensive offering, not just embedded payments, as well as where the embedded finance industry is headed in the next 2 to 3 years. Spoiler alert: in this new world, small businesses may not even know who their bank is because they have no need to.

Interval progression: when do we add more watts, and when do we add more time? Let's talk about 4 scenarios: FTP, vo2max, over unders and tempo. My former coach, Tom Bell, just spoke about this on That Triathlon Show. He talked about his strategy (which was used when I worked with him last season as an athlete) 25:50 * If only some workouts are optimal for the athlete, I think repeating the same workout design for a period is helpful. * You might add an arbitrary amount of repeats to a single interval, but no one knows if that is the right thing to do. if you did 4 x 10, who knows if you could have done 4 x 12…. * We ask athletes to repeat the same protocol, with the difference of going long on the last interval (let the athlete find the right level of progression). We trained vo2max from a physiological aspect, not just adding watts. Progressive overload with steady state intervals is fairly obvious and what we were doing a lot of in 2009-2010 For the following examples, let's assume athlete has an FTP of 300W FTP intervals: 4 x 10m @ 300-315W, rest 5m between. Do we add more time? max around 1hour. Other coaches will add more, I just don't find the fatigue to create any more success for athletes. american athlete, listen to grant koontz 8-12m power is a big decider in road races. When do we ride at 330W? Higher level athlete, or one-off effort when feeling good. If you can knock out one, can you do two? Then what is the third? where does the athlete get dropped? is it at the end of the race on a 10m climb….then more important to get those repeats in. is it a random just lack of power, I want more watts! 4 x 8m over and over with higher watts until we hit 110%…. When do we PR? VO2max intervals: 5 x 5m @ 360W? How do we look at repeatability? When do we do longer but lower watts? (Variety and slow component…race specific, very supra threshold!) When do we PR? When do we focus on shorter and harder? (before races, super hard starts are nice) Over Unders: 3 x 12m with 30s @ 120% and 2m @ 75-85% Most hit a homerun with this Just elongating to 45s makes it much harder. Or: 4m @ 110%, then 1m @ 106% and 1.5m @ 70-80% let's talk over unders: if it's 3 x 12m, If they absolutely crushed them, I'm NOT going to 15m, i'm going to a little longer over….i might start them with a 3m min over, and then the work.do they have a big anaerobic capacity? we might really need to make the overs harder ATHLETE SPECIFIC….what is their event? TEMPO maybe 80m-100m over a 3-4h ride, 15-20m chunks, actually quite tough. Great muscular component quite fun ride really goes along quickly Email me with questions or comment below! Brendan @EVOQ.
