In this episode, Danny sits down to talk with Syler Thomas, who has been overseeing and leading the student ministries (along with other roles) at Christ Church in Lake Forest, Illinois since 1998. Syler been a frequent speaker at Rooted Conferences and serves on the Rooted Steering Committee and Parent Steering Committee. He talks about hope and perseverance in youth ministry in general and in terms of the realities of youth ministry in new seasons. He also talks about hope and perseverance in relational discipleship, along with how youth workers in ministry can nurture practices and rhythms to embrace a healthy, gospel-centered perspective, in order to thrive, survive, and persevere in ministry.   “I do think there is some sprinting that happens in the fall, but you have to keep in mind that it is a marathon. January 26, 2023 Floran Syler-Woods, Ph.D, Director of Finance at the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund (Federation), discusses the important role financial systems play in the success of organizations and businesses. She and Vernon also unravel the complexities of understanding the determinants of wealth. In the capacity of Director of Finance Dr. Syler-Woods serves as the direct supervisor of the corporate accounting staff and indirect supervisor of all field accountants at the Federation. Prior to coming to the Federation Dr. Syler-Woods had an illustrious career either as a partner in public accounting firms, or director of finance in several organizations and firms. Since 1967 the Federation has been successfully working to provide Black farmers, landowners, and cooperatives in the Southern region with cooperative development, land retention, and advocacy. The Federation is a member-owned and operated organization born out of the Civil Rights Movement to do the unique work of empowering its membership of Black farmers, landowners, and cooperatives with racial and economic equity.

As we continue our series on The Life in the book of John, we come to chapter 15, where Jesus builds an extended metaphor about Himself as the vine, and his followers as the branches. What does it mean to remain in the vine, and how do we do that in a world of hurry?

René Syler co-anchored the CBS Morning Show from 2002-2006. Having started out as a local news anchor in Reno, NV, her ascent to the network level was meteoric. So, when she lost the job amid a network shakeup, it was that much harder to take.  René's story is one of high highs, low lows, setbacks, and transformations. A Black woman, René long faced pressure to conform to conventional beauty standards, which lifted when she transitioned out of network life. Now a one-woman, full-service production company, René's broadcast life continues — only now, it's in a way that lets her be her natural self.
