Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

We decided to uncork April and let Spring breathe a little. Please excuse our brief hiatus. But we're back with a film title that many might relate to, especially if you've been side eyeing your 401k lately. Margin Call is an amalgamation of the players and pieces involved in the 2008 economic crisis. We are happy to welcome Marty Kady back on the show for this episode, as he had a front row seat for some of the real life drama that happened in Congress for the financial services bail outs. While some may regard Wall Street the iconic film of the world of high finance, or The Big Short as more intellectually accessible, we think Margin Call is a film that has depth, and is elegantly succinct in revealing the culture and values of the financial sector.Episode links: https://youtu.be/yL_PQ81vf74?si=fvRbSzMHrEevLR6Ohttps://youtu.be/W-Q9AOp2FW8?si=n-hyZcbPh9jQtNU_https://youtu.be/J_IFGV9Y13c?si=bcX2Kqx8CpZPwwUOhttps://youtu.be/Mj82-QxN1Ww?si=UkfWds33pBTuNTxL

John is joined by Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith to discuss the role of private group chats in pushing Silicon Valley's politics to the right—and many of its most powerful figures into the arms of Donald Trump. Ben lays out how dozens of hush-hush Signal and WhatsApp groups emerged during Covid among the tech elite in reaction to what its members saw as the stifling woke conformity of social media; the seminal role of venture capitalist Marc Andreessen in seeding these forums; and how their influence now flows through X, Substack, and podcasts, making them the "dark matter of American politics and media." Ben also contends that, 100 days into his second term, Trump is starting to feel the pull of political gravity; that Semafor, which he cofounded three years ago, still retains the vaulting ambitions the company famously trumpeted at launch; and that the recent tumult in financial markets has elevated "Margin Call" from a cult classic to the greatest Wall Street movie of all time. Welcome back to the pod! This week we're heading back to 2011 and the film Margin Call. Now lots of you may have missed this when it first came out but its online popularity has given it a real second wind. We get stuck into some of the best scenes in the film in particular the boardroom sequence where Jeremy Irons lays down the law, we discuss the nature of how money can change an individual, how morality and self preservation can get in the way of each other and what lengths people will go to to ensure survival in their own bubble. How about this for a cast by the way: Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Jeremy Irons as John Tuld, Zachary Quinto as Peter Sullivan, Stanley Tucci as Eric Dale, Simon Baker as Jared Cohen, Demi Moore as Sarah Robertson, Penn Badgley as Seth Bregman, Mary McDonnell as Mary Rogers, Aasif Mandvi as Ramesh Shah. Hell of a shoot out for MVP!There are few redeeming features around any of the characters but we take a look at which characters seem to have some level of moral sensibility - as we rank them on the scumbagometer! Finally we discuss whether a film can become a fine wine through the nature of its online presence and being resurfaced through Youtube! Lots to get into - back with you on Friday with what to watch this weekend!Time to get watching for next week: Into the Wild (2007) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week, Scott sat down with co-hosts emeritus Benjamin Wittes, Quinta Jurecic and Lawfare's new senior legal fellow James Pearce to talk through the week's biggest national security news stories, including:“Midnight Planes Going Anywhere.” The Supreme Court has weighed in on the Trump administration's decision to quickly fly dozens of Venezuelan nationals to El Salvador with little to no meaningful process, holding that those detained had to be provided notice and an opportunity to challenge their removal, but only through habeas in their place of detention. Meanwhile, we are still awaiting the Court's final decision on whether a lower court can direct the executive branch to seek the return of another man who was removed to El Salvador by mistake. What will these decisions mean for the Trump administration's aggressive deportation policies?“All the King's Horses and All the King's Men, Won't Be Able to Put Humphrey's Together Again.” Watchers of the D.C. Circuit may have suffered whiplash this week, as an appellate panel reversed a district court's conclusion that the Trump administration's removal of statutorily protected members of the Merit Service Protection Board and National Labor Review Board was most likely unlawful, only for the panel itself to be reversed in short order by the whole en banc court. The issues now seem clearly poised for review by the Supreme Court. Is Humphrey's Executor and other case law preserving independent agencies toast? Or might the Court stop short of killing independent agencies altogether?“A Duty of Pander.” Attorney General Pam Bondi punished a Justice Department attorney this week after he admitted to a federal court that he had not been provided adequate answers to some of the court's questions. It's the latest in a parade of disciplinary actions accusing attorneys of disloyalty for engaging in candor with the federal courts over the confusion that some of the Trump administration's policies have caused. Is the Attorney General within her rights to crack down on these actions? And what impact will her demand for loyalty have on the Justice Department's relationship with the federal courts? For object lessons, Quinta recommended the movie "Margin Call" as a reflection on the last financial crisis, as we prepare for the next one. Ben brought attention to Russia's brutal and inhumane attack on a children's playground in Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky's hometown of Kryvi Rih, which underscores just how committed Russia really is to peace. Scott shared his latest home pizza discovery—a one hour no-knead recipe for pan pizza crust from King Arthur's Baking—as well as his next experiment: an all edge pieces pan pizza. And James gave a double-header object lesson, sharing his participation in the Baker to Vegas footrace and his reading of another story about something even more inhuman: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Despite being a relatively niche segment of the art market, art-backed loans have attracted attention from traditional banks, auction houses, and boutique firms. Josh explains the unexpected rise of margin calls in this sector, exploring what triggers them, how lenders are responding, and what it could mean for the broader art market. They also discuss how rising interest rates are impacting demand for art-backed loans and where the industry may be heading in the coming years.

From classic eighties films like “Wall Street” to Bret Easton Ellis's 1991 novel “American Psycho,” the world of finance has long provided a seductive backdrop for meditations on wealth and power. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss the many portrayals of this élite realm, and how its image has evolved over time. Where earlier texts glorified Wall Street types as roguish heroes, the Great Recession ushered in more critical fare, seeking to explain the inner workings of a system that benefitted the few at the expense of the many. In 2024, as TikTokkers and personal essayists search for “a man in finance,” things seem to be shifting again. HBO's “Industry,” now in its third season, depicts a cadre of young investment bankers clawing their way to the top of a soulless meritocracy—and may even engender some sympathy for the new finance bro. Why are audiences and creators alike so easily seduced by these stories even after the disillusionment of the Occupy Wall Street era? “We're talking about something—money—that is fun, and that we all on some level do want,” Cunningham says. “It's always going to make us feel.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Industry” (2020—)“Wall Street” (1987)“You don't have to look for a ‘man in finance.' It sure sounds like the Apocalypse is near. During the eclipse, trucks can't drive through Texas and New York is locking down there prisoners. NASA is not only launching rockets at the moon's shadow; they are launching another rocket at a solar flare from Alaska! Earthquakes hit Taiwan and New Jersey as the planets align for the solar eclipse. A plague of cicadas are about to erupt and Israel is sacrificing red heifers! What could go wrong? How will this all affect the economy? Are we also looking at an Economic Armageddon? What would that look like? The Deep Economic State, Central Banks, The Bank For International Settlements and The Conspiracy Behind It All. How The World's Most Powerful Central Bankers have met in Secret for almost 100 years planning this Reset. How Quantum Computing could hack the World's Encryption and bring down the dollar. Leveraging over twenty years' experience in the realm of high finance, he brings real-world authenticity to his fictional narratives. In Quoz, Mel weaves together a tail of monetary mayhem that strikes directly at the core of American power and economic might. This episode was recorded on April 27, 2023In this episode, Brad Mills is joined by Nicolas Gregory, an AI connoisseur, fervent bitcoiner, and co-writer of the CivKit White Paper. Amidst a backdrop of financial tumult as depicted in cinematic tales such as “Margin Call” and “The Big Short,” Gregory recounts his evolution from a software engineer entrenched in the throes of the 2010 banking crisis to a pioneer in the Bitcoin and distributed computing revolution.During his tenure in a bank's equities wing, Gregory gained critical insights into the mechanics of derivatives trading—expertise that now fuels his advocacy for Bitcoin's promise amidst the skepticism surrounding centralized financial institutions. The episode uncovers Gregory's early days within the close-knit Bitcoin community of New York, chronicling his transition into the startup sphere following the government's bailout of banks.Throughout the conversation, Brad and Nic dissect the intricacies of CommerceBlock's endeavours, including their trailblazing Mercury wallet initiative. The dialogue shifts toward the shifting landscape of finance in light of emerging Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and the potential implementation of Universal Basic Income—developments that are set to redefine the very fabric of monetary systems. The episode delves into the mass exodus of top-tier talent from traditional finance to tech giants and startups, igniting an AI renaissance that threatens to reshape industries and employment. The fallout 2008 financial crisis has been portrayed on film in a number of ways; from documentary's like Iniside Job (2010) and Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) to ficiton films "inspired" by the events like The Big Short (2015) and Margin Call (2011).  Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly (2012) takes a different approach. It starts with George V. Higgins' 1974 crime novel, itself the third in a series, that centers on a lower level crime syndicate in Boston. Then Dominik places that story in a 2008 New Orleans during the final weeks of the Obama/McCain presidential election.  We get into the obvious metaphors that occur when organized crime is compared to financial institutions. But, we also end up discussing the various ways that Nationalism can manifest itself in America; from George W. Bush, to Obama, to Trump and Biden.  We'll be dipping our toes back into this Systemic Risk topic, the intersection of the 2008 crisis and it's portrayal on film.
