With the Invincible animated series propelling more and more fans to the comic books, now is the perfect time for Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley to reteam on a new series. In a universe populated with numerous rich, wild characters, they could have revamped an infinite number of ideas. They chose Battle Beast, the white lion-like humanoid cursed with an unquenchable rage, and in doing so, Kirkmann and Ottley create an opportunity to reframe the character's original narrative. Battle Beast first appeared in Invincible #19 (2004) and did not return until Invincible #55 (2008). Between those comics is a massive swath of time, and the new series, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast, will explore it fully. The first issue arrives in comic shops next Wednesday. If it's any indication, when this series is over, it will radically alter our understanding of Battle Beast's narrative and its place within the larger Invincible storyline. This week, we trap Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley in our Zoom room. We examine how this first issue challenges our previous interpretation of the title character, the pain at Battle Beast's core, and the brilliant action that erupts from it. Having built a utopia on his homeworld through violent combat, Battle Beast seeks an end through a worthy opponent. There's one big reason why Invincible season 3 will never be the realistic superhero animation that it truly wants to be...“It's like peeing your pants on purpose!”Omni-Man“Iconic” is a word that's overused to the point of meaninglessness, but it's pretty safe to say that the power of flight is the one most associated with being a superhero. There were plenty of super strong heroes in myth, legend, and even popular culture for centuries, but combining that with the power to defy gravity and fly is where what we know of as a “superhero” really begins to take shape. Even Superman, in his earliest stories, couldn't outright fly, and was instead “able to leap tall buildings in a single bound,” a power often described as being limited to about 200 yards at a time. Eventually, self-directed flight became more convenient from a storytelling perspective…not to mention cool.Sure, there have been plenty of “explanations” given for superheroic flight in various stories through the years, but nobody has ever tried to fully explain the reasoning behind it as well as Invincible. Originally a brilliant comic from Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, it has been adapted into an equally brilliant adult animated series on Prime Video. With Invincible season 3 now finally here, we thought it might be a good time to take a look at the Invincible concept of self-directed humanoid flight, whether it makes sense in the story, and if there's any scientific hope whatsoever that one day humans might be able to shake loose the bonds of gravity.Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers to these questions…WATCH THE VIDEO VERSION HERE: https://youtu.be/FlILlAncxZQSUGGESTED VIEWING Look, all of Invincible on Prime Video is masterful superhero storytelling. Less nihilistic than The Boys but every bit as thought-provoking and violent, you really need to check it out. That being said, pretty much everything you need to know about the rules of flight as they're portrayed in this show come from the first three episodes of season one. But trust us, you'll want to watch more.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Law of Conservation of MomentumNot to spoil everything right up front, but this basic law of physics pretty much crushes our dreams of ever flying like Invincible. Let NASA explain…they would know!GravityGravity is another one that's kind of tough to get around. Again, we figured NASA probably has the best explanation here.Spacetime DiagramsThere's no easy way to summarize these, but especially for our audio-only listeners who couldn't see our visualization, this should help.“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”For some variations and historical context on that Archimedes quote go here!Birds do it. Bees do it…But we can't? That's not fair! Here's how birds and insects are able to fly, though. And for the non-scientific stuff…The article that Tamara quotes about the matter of making Mark Grayson bi-racial in the TV series can be read in full here.Hakeem refers to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, a truly incredible podcast which did a series on World War I called “Blueprint for Armageddon” which can be found here. We're big fans. And also, do not forget that Invincible was an AMAZING comic long before it was a TV series. Need something to while away the long wait between new Invincible seasons? Want to get even further ahead in the story? Invincible from Image Comics is the way to go.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't the first time we've tackled superheroes on Does it Fly? so you might want to check out our episodes on Batman, The Boys, and Iron Man to get a better sense of the real world concerns that superheroes (and villains) might face. Trois ans. Initial leaks seemed to depict a budget-friendly "Quest 3 Lite" without augmented reality capabilities. However, more recent alleged screenshots from an internal Meta meeting showed a headset with a front-facing camera array and marketing focused on "mixed reality," suggesting augmented reality features. The authenticity of these leaks remains uncertain, as the level of detail in the latter leak has raised doubts about its legitimacy, given the potential legal risks of leaking internal documents.Foldable Phones - Leaks suggest Samsung will cater to different segments of the foldable phone market with its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6, offering both a budget version around $800 and a high-end model, with the former making compromises like no S Pen support and a smaller battery. Meanwhile, an unconfirmed roadmap points to Apple joining the foldable fray in 2026 with its own foldable iPhone, which is expected to carry a premium price tag higher than Samsung's budget offering. You can support this show by visiting our merch store, or by leaving us an Apple Podcasts review.

In this Half Baked edition of Comics and Chronic, Anthony and Jake talk about their experience at LA Comic Con! But first, is Godzilla: Minus One the best Godzilla movie Jake has ever seen? Do we stand on business? Is Kevin Smith coming on the podcast? Did anyone know Kevin Smith would be at the con? What did we think of the Cancer and Comics panel that Kevin Smith moderated? Do we connect most with guests that are in both the comic book and entertainment industry? Does Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia; Winning Time) have his own horror podcast that we want to cover on an episode? Was Matt Bors (The Nib; Justice Warriors) the first person we talked to at the con? When did the edibles hit? Did Chip Zdarsky sketch a (legally) high Hulk for Anthony? How do most creators react when we tell them about Comics and Chronic? Who were we surprised to find out was a stoner? Are we planning to have Josie Campbell (The New Adventures of Shazam; My Adventures with Superman) on the pod? Did we immediately click with Tini Howard (Excalibur; Catwoman)? Are we making “stand on business” business cards? Did Cody Ziglar (Miles Morales: Spiderman; She-Hulk) put a Pesci sticker on his laptop? Did we meet artist Ryan Ottley? Was Aubrey Sitterson (The Stoned Master; Beef Bros) one of the funniest creators we met? Was this Anthony's first time in LA? Did Jake see GaTa from Dave at the movie theater? What do we respect about our conversation with Dan Slott? Has Dan Slott been playing Spider-Man 2 on PS5? Did we both pick up Stray Dogs comics from Tony Fleecs? Are we planning an episode on Local Man too? What comic did Anthony recommend to Jake that almost made him lose all respect for Anthony? What's the comic book Twitter discourse of the week and how do we feel about it? How is Mark Millar involved in all of this? Is it empowering a toxic part of the comic book community? Should that part of the comic community get fucked? Do the guests we've had on the pod prove that diverse, personal stories succeed in comics? How did Anthony feel about In-N-Out Burger? Did we talk to former guest of the pod Scott Koblish? Were there any weed comics we found at the con? Should our super-talented artist pal Joey Murphy go to cons to sell his art? Was former WWE superstar Rikishi at the con and will he be joining us on the pod to talk about his first comic book with Eric McElroy Jr.? Has anyone ever mentioned Rikishi and Joe Pesci in the same sentence? Did we buy LEGOs at the con even though we aren't LEGO people? Was Timmy Heague (Archie - Fear the Funhouse: Toybox of Terror) one of the coolest creators we talked to at the con? Was 2023 the year Anthony became an Archie fan? Did we get to play the new video game Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch at the con? Did we learn about Elijah Woods new comic with Spectrevision at L.A. Comic Con? Is Cody a good father? Did Jake fall asleep during one of the panels? Are we going to more comic cons in the future? Will the boys of Comics and Chronic be part of the Red Eye Comedy Festival Cody is organizing in West Virginia in April? Did Anthony run into Willem Dafoe on his flight home? What did we think of the cosplay at the con? Would Jake be able to figure out Spider-Man's identity if he was in the Marvel universe? Did we have some intense rounds of Super Smash Bros? Hello and welcome to the Longbox Hunters, a podcast hosted by two longtime friends who adore comics and talking into microphones. Each issue (episode) will cover what our crew has been reading recently before moving on to whatever that edition's topic may be, with plenty of room for discussion, discourse, and even the occasional special guest to keep things fresh. From story arc analysis to character history deep dives and debates over widely contested comic book plot points and hot topics, the Longbox Hunters team covers everything in between all while bringing their trademark wit and enthusiasm that listeners of Nerds Talk Movies know and love! On today's issue, Tristan and Drew are talking about Invincible (Volume 1). With four Mark Grayson and Atom Eve counseling sessions already behind us, we finally reach a conclusion regarding their Invincible relationship. In this episode, we discuss the final two trade paperbacks in Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker's superhero masterpiece, The End of All Things Parts One and Two. While their ending is definitive, their story seemingly remains ongoing. We must reckon with what we're given and how far these characters have and have not grown since we first met them one hundred and forty-four issues ago. Also, in this conversation, we establish our last thoughts about our chosen love expert for Mark and Eve, Dr. Marc Brackett, and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Certainly, we'll apply numerous elements from this book to our partnership, but not everything jives with our current journey. Mood meters and meta-emotions, you're absolutely going into our utility belt. Invincible: The End of All Things contains nothing but Big Emotions, and they're somehow even larger than the usual Big Emotions the series throws at its characters. It's all in the title, and stress levels are extra high when facing oblivion. How do we challenge/embrace life's greatest threats? What can we learn from how Mark and Eve handle them? Our final Comic Book Couples Counseling Mark and Eve sessions also signify the start of a week-long San Diego Comic-Con International celebration. As you're listening to this episode, we're already traveling to the west coast. On Thursday, join us back here for an in-depth conversation with writer Paul Cornell, discussing his Comic-Con satire, Con and On. On Friday, we're chatting with Adrian Tomine about his classic graphic novel Shortcomings and the upcoming movie adaptation. On Saturday, Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips return to the show, teasing their new That Texas Blood spin-off series, The Enfield Gang Massacre. Finally, on Sunday, we were joined by Julie Sakai and Stan Sakai, giving us the scoop on all things Usagi Yojimbo and Dogu Publishing. And, if you haven't already, now's the time to join our Patreon, where superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson just recorded an epic chat with us about his favorite single-issue comic, The 'Nam #9. It's all part of our new Patreon podcast series, where we ask rad comic book creators to choose their favorite floppy comic. Invincible issues covered in this episode: 133 - 144, published by Image Comics through the Skybound Entertainment imprint between February 2017 and February 2018. The comic was written by Robert Kirkman, penciled by Ryan Ottley, Cory Walker, inked by Ryan Ottley, Cory Walker, Dexter Vines, and Mark Morales, colored by Nathan Fairbairn, and lettered by Rus Wooton. When is a reboot not a reboot? When Robert Kirkman and Invincible are involved. We've reached the halfway point in our Mark and Atom Eve counseling sessions, delving into one of their relationship's most complicated and gut-wrenching moments. Surviving this moment is absolutely critical for themselves and the fate of the universe, and possibly the romance between the two podcasters making this episode! If you could go back in time with the knowledge you possess today, would you do better, be better? You'd like to think so, but living in the now is the only path forward. That path, however, is always difficult, and there are no shortcuts. Helping us navigate this tumultuous time between Mark and Eve is Dr. Marc Brackett and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Few comics feel as epic as Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. As such, it presents an incredible challenge for Comic Book Couples Counseling. Where do we start if we want to properly analyze the complicated romantic relationship between Mark Grayson and Samantha Eve Wilkins? For years, the question has gotten in the way of programming our Invincible counseling sessions, but last week, Robert Kirkman himself came to our rescue. We've said this on the podcast before, but we didn't really know each other until we were a few years into our marriage. With that in mind, Kirkman suggested we start our counseling sessions later in Mark and Eve's romantic timeline, just after they became parents. In this massive episode, we begin our new counseling series by jumping into Invincible almost toward its end. Invincible: Modern Family finds Earth thriving under a dictatorship. SPOILERS for those that have not read the entire Invincible saga - Robot has taken over, and his tyranny seems horrifyingly logical. Mark and Eve cannot throw themselves into combat as a new family, choosing to leave Earth behind and make a life amongst the stars. However, are they proactively prospering as a badass superhero couple, or are they stuffing their emotions and hiding from those dark thoughts that reside within? Helping us navigate this tumultuous time between Mark and Eve is Dr. Marc Brackett and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Get ready to challenge your meta-emotions, friends. Issues covered in this episode: Invincible 115 - 120, published by Image Comics under the Skyboud Entertainment imprint, released between September 2014 and May 2015. The comic was written by Robert Kirkman, penciled by Ryan Ottley, inked by Cliff Rathburn and Ryan Ottley, colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and lettered by Rus Wooton. A word of caution about today's episode. Our conversation briefly touches upon sexual assault. We don't get into the details, but if this is a sensitive subject for you, please feel free to skip it and we'll catch you next week. If you or someone you know needs to talk to someone, you can call 1-800-656-4673 and you'll be routed to a local sexual assault service provider in your area. The long awaited third and final installment to the Ant-Man trilogy has arrived, and Quantumania rules!! The MCU's fifth phase has begun with a microscopic epic using Kang the Conqueror as the main villain, and with great performances from Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiifer, Jack and Artie both bring an exciting review. How does this set up for future Marvel movies? How does it stack up to its precursors and most importantly, how does Kang compare to Thanos? Listen for our thoughts! Our dad also returns for Tales From the Dollar Bin, in which he reviews comic backstories for forgotten robot toys of the '70s and '80s like Microbots and Starriors while Jack reviews Bloodshot #1 from Valiant in 1992 along with the 2016 Ryan Ottley mini-series, Grizzly Shark vs. Seabear.
