Climate denial remains rife in the US. For example, in Washington, D.C., nearly 25% of the current members of Congress are, via their public statements, climate denialists. As for Health and Human Services (HHS), the department has steadfastly refused to promulgate any regulations to mitigate the healthcare industry's massive carbon footprint that, for example, amounts to well over four times the annual cumulative greenhouse gas emissions of Exxon, Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, Chevron and BP. In his just-published book Tad Delay provides an unsparing assessment of “the vast arsenal of denial that we rarely ever talk about,” i.e., “the scams, lies and misinformation that sustain the degradation of people and planet.” As I note during the discussion, Delay's work can be read in context of Wainwright and Mann's 2018 work, “Climate Leviathan” also published by Verso. This week we are starting at the End. This week on the show myself and lucy are joined by Tad Delay and Ben ware. Tad the author of Future of Denial:The Ideologies of Climate Change. He's also an assistant Professor of Philosophy at Baltimore City Community College. Ben Ware author of On Extinction: Beginning Again At The End. Ben is the Co-director of the centre for Philosophy and art at Kings College London. I imagine if you're listening or watching  this you're probably in some state of shock when it comes to how humanity is responding to the collapse of the planet as we know it. Maybe you're also finding yourself cringing or at odds with how some of those who are most seemingly committed to stopping climate breakdown go about their business. How are we to understand how humanity is reacting at this moment. Are we in denial about the end of the world? Are some of us enjoying the idea of the end? The climate movement is used to fight denial. Few who do this work escape the need to push back against critics claiming that human-created carbon dioxide emissions don't cause dangerous warming. But as the crisis becomes more clear and everpresent, it's time to expand our definition of climate denial, argues author Tad DeLay. In his new book, Future of Denial: The Ideologies of Climate Change, DeLay confronts the idea that we are rarely facing up to the real facts of the crisis and allowing for a great deal of harm to take place as a result. He joins the show to discuss what the Left often misses when it comes to the facts of climate change, why a more honest conversation is unnecessary, and what he fears most as more people are harmed by both the crisis and the reaction to it.  Tad DeLay, PhD is a philosopher, religion scholar, and interdisciplinary critical theorist. On this episode, Joel talks with Tad DeLay, about his latest book God is Unconscious: Psychoanalysis and Theology (if your in Sweden, you can find Delay's book here.) DeLay, a PhD student at Claremont Graduate University, wrote this excellent introduction to Lacanian theory and philosophy, trying to display the psychoanalytical potential for/in a theological discourse.

Tad has written an accessible that by its end will have you thinking thoughts you had no idea how to think before you started. Tad is a friend of the show and fellow PhD candidate at Claremont. His book is so good and the ideas so deep that just one interviewer was not enough - we had to get three!
