01:14 A simple switch to reduce racist ratingsA study of almost 70,000 ratings showed that racial discrimination could be eliminated from an online platform by switching from a five-star rating system to a thumbs up or down. The platform connected customers to workers who performed home repair jobs, and prior to the shift people categorised by the study authors as ‘non-white' had lower ratings and got paid less than their white counterparts. Through follow up studies the authors also showed that the five-star system allowed people to impart their personal opinions, whereas a thumbs up or down just focused them on whether a job was good or bad. The team hopes this could be an easy-to-implement shift to tackle racial discrimination.Research Article: Botelho et al.News and Views: Racial bias eliminated when ratings switch from five stars to thumbs up or down11:24 Research HighlightsExperimental evidence that cockatoos like flavouring their food, and the harsh climate of sixteenth century Transylvania.Research Highlight: Gourmet cockatoos like to fancy up their foodResearch Highlight: Transylvanian diaries reveal centuries-old climate extremes14:05 An analysis of retraction hotspotsA Nature investigation has revealed where the most retractions come from, with hospitals in China and institutions in India and Pakistan topping the list. We here at Iron Culture have been on a mission to better inform you, dear listener, as to the inner workings of science. From what goes on in the lab itself, to the publication process, to dissemination, to eventual meta-analysis, the challenge of interpretation and communication of science, the optimistic promises of open science, and the increasing focus on replication, it's been a hopefully eye-opening and overall encouraging discussion. However, while the scientific method is inherently self-correcting, the apparatus of science is far from perfect and there is a big problem with its principle tool of correcting the peer-reviewed record: retraction. What leads to a paper being retracted? What is the process? How does it impact the literature? Most importantly, does it effectively change the understanding of the science in the community the studies are meant to serve? Join the Erics in this most recent episode as they break it all down!

The report exposes an alarming trend: For every 10,000 Malaysian research papers published, a staggering 17.2 were retracted. This figure stands three times higher than the global average—raising serious questions about the credibility and integrity of Malaysian academic research. Are these retractions for error corrections and honest mistakes, or does it point to systemic challenges in academia that demand urgent attention? Ep. 175 - How to Strike Back When Tragedy Strikes

In today's episode, returning guest Pat Nemmers joins the guys to discuss tragedy through the lens of his newest book, “Retractions.” Tragedy is a real part of the Christian faith. When we look to Scripture, we see that those who were most used by the Lord were often the people who went through the most difficult circumstances. Today's conversation will discuss how believers can bounce back after experiencing a tragedy by clinging to the Lord for hope to thrive in a way that honors Him.To begin, Pat explains that some spiritual things are never seen until we are in a dark place. Pat's dark night of the soul came when his wife of nearly 17 years suffered a heart attack and died in his arms. Pat shares the hardest part of the event, which was telling his 7 children that their mother was no longer with them. Then, he unpacks times before his family experienced this tragedy that he lacked compassion that he now realizes he could have shown.Pat suggests that it is because God loves us that He has given us the gift of suffering. He offers advice on how Christians can hold on to their faith during tragedy and turn it into something beautiful. To those who are currently grieving, he informs that grief does ultimately have a limit. Then, Pat shares the story of seeing a powerful double rainbow which was God's reminder to him that his wife was in glory in heaven; this realization came on the basis of this truth: to be absent from the body and present with the Lord. For listeners going through tragedy, he believes now is the time to lean into this fundamental truth. The reality is that suffering and joy are always part of our lives. Until the fullness of Jesus is recognized here on earth as it is in Heaven, we will always be living with the pains of sin and death. The gospel provides us with the knowledge that our loved ones who believed are with Christ in heaven and that one day God will fulfill His promise that every tear will be wiped away. Thanks for listening! The Wigs
Domestic Violence Retractions: A flawed basis for prosecution

The Wigs

In this episode, the wigs examine a controversial situation impacting some of the state's potentially most vulnerable women which requires reform.  It is common in the criminal justice system for women who allege domestic violence against their partner to later withdraw the allegation and in some cases claim the allegations were in fact lies.  Most experts and criminal lawyers are aware that many of these retractions are not a genuine indication of the falsity of the original allegation, but rather can be motivated by fear, love or just a concern to keep a family together and supported.  In some such cases, NSW Police have been charging such women with making a false accusation, relying alone on the woman's retraction.  Many such women have pleaded guilty and in some cases been jailed.  The Wigs are concerned that this practice has led to miscarriages of justice, with genuine victims of domestic violence being re-victimised, discredited and jailed.  In this episode the wigs examine the issue, discuss case studies and propose a way to ensure any such prosecutions are properly considered and only launched when the original allegation can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt to in fact be false, by evidence other than the retraction itself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

RSV in Infants and Children: Symptoms, Prevention, and Synagis Criteria

It is likely that you've heard about a child who has had RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus from a friend, a family member, or perhaps you've even had your own personal experience with it. But, you may not realize how common it actually is! Did you know that almost all children get RSV at least once before they are two years old. For healthy children, it is likely to present just like a typical cold or virus, but for some children, they become very ill with RSV. Due to certain infants being more at risk of developing the severe symptoms of RSV, they may receive a series of Synagis injections during the peak RSV season. Infants born prematurely, infants diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), or children with hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease are considered high-risk patients who may be eligible to receive Synagis.October is RSV Awareness Month, which is appropriate because the typical RSV season is from November to April. Since we are approaching the peak RSV season, we are going to review RSV, how it gets transmitted, what the typical symptoms are, and when parents should contact their provider. We will also take a closer look at Synagis, what exactly it is, the current inclusion criteria, how often it should be given, the length of treatment, and signs and symptoms parents should watch for that may be indicative of an allergic reaction.  Since RSV is so common and can cause infants and children to require hospitalization, it is important for parents to know preventive measures that will minimize the risk as well as how to identify concerning symptoms. Jeff explains what he was up to when he presented a funded lecture on the topic of confessional Lutheran thought, yet started to unravel his entanglement in confessional Lutheran though through the generous support of confessional Lutheran donors. This is in response to the Trembath lecture which is available in several formats by checking out our show notes at protectyournoggin.org. The lecture in question was ironically pivotal for Jeff quitting churh-related higher education altogether, so enjoy the tragedy but be not afraid: it ultimately led him to a professional life he is finding joyful.

Jeff discusses the reasons why he wrote an article about the Hebrew Bible's account of semi-divine beings making the Nephilim, giant god-human hybrids, and what it means for navigating life today in a postmodern world, run by a modern economy, informed by an ancient text. This article isn't rejected so much as identified as the first part of the unravelling of Jeff's confidence in the American evangelical interpretive tradtion. This isn't for everbybody, but if it is relevant to your background, it might help frame some of the dissonance many experience.

This is part of a short series of episodes in which I look back on stuff I (Jeff) wrote in the past and reflect on ways my thinking might have changed, and what I might want to reject. In this episode, while I generally stand by my take on the history of thought within the Genevan Academy, under the rectorship of Theodore Beza (John Calvin's right hand man), I explore ways in which I didn't see how much the form or style of theology he propagated has had negative, unintended consequences on Western culture, especially that of American Christian culture. Among the items left from Tuesday's introductory press confab for Patrick Beverley was some commentary from Darvin Ham on the health of guard Kendrick Nunn. He missed all of last season with a bone bruise in his knee, and has been working towards full recovery throughout the summer. Some reports indicate it might be going a little slower than hoped, though Nunn himself seemed to refute that. For his part, Ham says he thinks Nunn has looked "great," though seemed to indicate that's been in individual workouts and in the weight room, as opposed to full five-on-five sessions. That's not necessarily a big problem at this point - it's only early September - but for many fans, until they see Nunn on the floor doing everything he's supposed to do, without restrictions, there's going to be some concern. And rightly, because Nunn is super-important for any opportunity the Lakers have to exceed expectations. Not because he's an All-Star, but because he's a legit scorer who can help stretch the floor with a 3-point shout, and amounts to the team's best free agent acquisition. Yes, he's not new, but he might as well be. So what does it do to the guard rotation if he's available, now that the Lakers have added Beverley? And what does it mean for Lonnie Walker IV, by the way?
