Mark Halperin joins Michael to rank the top Democratic contenders for 2028 — and the results may surprise you. Why is Gavin Newsom leading the field? Is Josh Shapiro the real threat? Where do Kamala Harris, J.B. Pritzker, AOC, Pete Buttigieg, Rahm Emanuel, and Mark Kelly stand? Halperin explains his latest Democratic power rankings — focused not on who would win the presidency, but who is most likely to win the nomination. The conversation also explores whether Democrats will prioritize electability over identity in 2028, and whether the party shifts back toward the center. Plus: Trump's posture toward Iran, the continuing Epstein fallout, and what Republicans are quietly planning for the midterms. Listen in, and please rate, review, and share this podcast! SEASON 4 EPISODE 58: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has attempted another coup. You may have missed it. Trump and Jeanine Pirro with the acquiescence of the hapless Speaker of the House and Porn Monitor attempted another coup: Attempted to get Senators Mark Kelly and Elise Slotkin and four members of the House INDICTED for obstructing Trump’s dictatorship. Tried to convict, tried to jail, for imaginary crimes of disloyalty to him that Trump bleated are quote “punishable by death” six military veterans because they told other Americans to follow the law. For expressing fealty to the Constitution, for publicly reminding service members that THEIR allegiance is to the constitution and not some rapidly deteriorating psychopathic despot. And ordinary Americans in a Grand Jury stopped Trump’s attempt to overthrow the government of the United States. For. Now. Which means the lesson Trump and Pirro and Johnson and the other deputy despots will take away is: next time don’t bother with Grand Juries, just have ICE blast them in the head. What to do to STOP “next time”- what to do RIGHT NOW in the Senate Continuing Funding Resolution - what to do in state houses before the midterms. PLUS: Trump's either-or: either he Narc'd on Epstein or knew nothing about his crimes. Either way, Trump is now the CEO of the Epstein Cover-up. And maybe even more disturbing, he is actually, seriously, hallucinating. Full-on crazy talk. Not his normal delusions: this is A Chinese plot to destroy the National Hockey League. He thinks this is really happening. B-Block (37:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: He won Olympic Bronze but was disqualified in the game of life. The three weird sisters are still whining about Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl: Megyn Kelly, Sage Steele, Michele Tafoya - the latter of two using language that matches almost word-for-word what was said by racists and sexists who called the ESPN complaint voicemail line to try to get THEM fired. And then there's the Twitter Rando whose 'egg corn' is as delightful as any I can remember. He's complaining about solitaire confinement! C-Block (50:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In the old days baseball spring training wasn't already unofficial underway as of... last week. It was limited and exciting and one of my joys was going to it and reporting from it. So it's time to try to recreate some of that, because naturally I still have the tape of my 1978 Spring Training reports from Florida! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We break down the DOJ's disastrous failure to redact victim information, the political spin flying in every direction, and the first criminal investigation sparked by the release. Plus: Trump's renewed obsession with relitigating the 2020 election, federal agencies being weaponized to “prove” conspiracies, Tulsi Gabbard's very sketchy side quest, and why all of this is quietly poisoning confidence in the 2026 midterms. Then we shift gears with a big, slightly uncomfortable realization: this is the year millennials officially got old (at least according to this Op-Ed). We talk “established adulthood,” saying no without guilt, going to bed early on purpose, being called “Ms.” by a 20-something, and the weird limbo of feeling young while society insists otherwise. We unpack how aging feels internally versus how it's treated culturally, especially online, and why many of us just… never went back to posting the way we did pre-COVID. Then we ask our PALs a deceptively simple question: what's something you didn't realize was optional until you saw someone just not do it? From not explaining your “no,” to ignoring unexpected door knocks, renegotiating deadlines, abandoning books mid-read, leaving places you don't want to be, and realizing you don't actually have to climb the corporate ladder, we talk boundaries, burnout, and the freedom that comes with unlearning expectations. Per usual, we've got recommendations on tap for y'all: Slingz (Andrew), checking your voter registration status (Laura), and hydrahyde gloves for all your gardening needs (Pam). 1. U.S. Response to Iran Protests President Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. is considering airstrikes on Iran to stop the violent crackdown on protesters. The White House emphasized that diplomacy remains the first option, but military action is on the table. Trump stated that Iran may have crossed a “red line” by killing unarmed protesters. Reports indicate massive protests in Iran, with some deaths caused by stampedes and others allegedly by government forces. Trump warned Iran that if they harm protesters, the U.S. will respond “very hard.” Communication channels remain open between U.S. and Iranian officials despite no formal diplomatic relations. 2. Anti-ICE Protests in the U.S. Trump pledged to investigate funding sources behind anti-ICE protests, suggesting that protesters may be “professional agitators” funded by dark money. DHS and Republican lawmakers claim that anti-ICE groups are not organic and are financed by far-left organizations. DHS is deploying up to 1,000 additional federal agents to Minneapolis amid rising anti-ICE protests. The protests escalated after an ICE officer fatally shot a woman (Renee Good), which DHS classified as domestic terrorism because she allegedly weaponized her vehicle. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized DHS and ICE, calling their actions harmful to city safety. Videos show organized anti-ICE activists blocking traffic, surrounding agents, and resisting law enforcement, leading to federal agents using tear gas and pepper balls. ICE and Border Patrol assert they will continue operations despite local opposition. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Crime Data Manipulation in Washington, D.C. Investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the House Oversight Committee revealed that crime statistics were deliberately misclassified by the Metropolitan Police Department. The outgoing police chief, Pamela Smith, allegedly pressured commanders to report lower crime figures, downgrade serious offenses, and even retaliated against those who tried to report accurate data. These actions created a “culture of fear” within the department, undermining public trust. While the conduct did not lead to criminal charges, it raised serious concerns about transparency and governance. Fentanyl Classified as a Weapon of Mass Destruction Former President Trump signed an executive order categorizing fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, citing its catastrophic impact on American lives. The order frames fentanyl as a national security threat, aligning it with nuclear and chemical weapons, and authorizes expanded measures against drug cartels. This initiative is part of a broader military and policy campaign targeting narcotics trafficking, including naval operations and sanctions against Venezuela’s leadership accused of narco-terrorism. Data journalist Chris Dalla Riva brings charts, facts, and plenty of fight to Uncharted Territory: What Numbers Tell Us About the Biggest Hit Songs and Ourselves, a tour through every Billboard Hot 100 #1 and the strange incentives that pick our "popular." They debate whether streaming makes the charts more accurate or just more boring—why Christmas songs now squat in the Top 10, why covers almost always slow songs down, and what the early "wilderness years" of the Hot 100 were missing. There's also a detour into the power of platform kings (hello, Sean Parker) and how a playlist can turn "Royals" into destiny. Plus: Trump's ghoulish Rob Reiner post, a reminder of Reiner's unreal directing run, and a weekend that managed to be both pointless and ugly. 1. National Security Concerns We open with alarming claims that 18,000 known or suspected terrorists have entered the U.S. during the Biden administration, allegedly due to lax border security. The source cited is testimony from Joe Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing. Specific examples include Afghan nationals linked to terrorist organizations who entered under the Operation Allies Welcome program. The conversation emphasizes the risks posed by "got-aways" (migrants who evade border patrol) and criticizes the administration for prioritizing politics over security. 2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and U.S. Leadership The second segment focuses on President Trump’s executive order aimed at centralizing AI regulation to prevent fragmented state-level rules. Senator Cruz frames AI as the “economic battle of the 21st century”, comparing it to the U.S. winning the internet race in the 1990s. Whoever leads in AI will shape global values—either American principles of liberty or China’s model of surveillance and control. Trump’s remarks highlight the need for a single federal approval system to accelerate AI development and maintain U.S. dominance. 3. Designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a Terrorist Organization Senator Cruz advocates for legislation to designate the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates as terrorist organizations. He explains a shift from a top-down approach (targeting the global organization) to a bottom-up strategy (starting with affiliates like Hamas). The discussion notes bipartisan support but criticizes the House for weakening the bill. Cruz stresses that allies such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have already designated the group as a terrorist organization. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Holiday dread is real enough—fraught family gatherings, forced merriment, and the persistent myth that December is the peak month for suicide. In truth, it's the lowest month for suicides, even as the season brings elevated risks of car crashes, cardiac emergencies, and alcohol-related ER visits. Sadie Dingfelder joins for an Is That Bulls**t? to explain why winter depression rises even as suicide rates fall, and how the "holiday spike" myth keeps circulating. Plus: Trump's tariff rhetoric collides with economic reality, and Texas politics gets reshaped by counter-mobilization.
