This week Tim Kask and Jared Nielsen join me. They have a Kickstarter for a new boxed set, The Curse of the Weaver Queen. While the length of the interview is fairly short, it is packed full of Tim's energy and unabashed opinions. He wasn't pulling any punches. Jared joins us to explain the Kickstarter in more detail. I have Patreon and for the price of 1 dollar a month you not only support me, but you get outtakes from the show. This week's outtakes from Tim are quite hilarious…including a cautionary tale of why you shouldn't talk on a land-line during an electrical storm. You better get strapped in. It is Stu's Birthday! We lead things off with Chaosium's Khan of Khans (01:30), a fast-paced boom and bust board game about cattle thievery in Glorantha, by Reiner Knizia. The main event: Dragon Magazine (05:38). Stu gives a brief history of the publication (06:00). Hambone remembers seeing it in book stores in the mall (07:45). Stu reveals how Dragon Magazine gave him the collecting bug (09:41) and how his large run functions as a sort of history of the tabletop RPG hobby (11:00). Stu talks about how editor Tim Kask worked to keep Dragon semi-independent from TSR (13:00). Editor Roger E. Moore's tenure comes up (13:54) along with Dungeon Magazine. While Dragon slowly became an advertorial publication, Stu doesn't mind because it allows us to see D&D evolving on a month to month basis (15:00) and Hambone segues into the Dragon+. Stu gets into Dragon's experimental tendencies (17:30) and explains how Forgotten Realms was (kinda sorta) born in the magazine (19:22). Preservation comes up (21:00). A brief encouragement to subscribe to Unwinnable Monthly during our Holiday Subscription Drive (24:25). Stu gets excited about completing his Planescape collection (25:00). See you in two weeks! * Clarification: Stu meant Rubbermaid, not Tupperware Correction: Despite his whip-fast certainty, Stu was wrong. Pong came out in 1972.

The Compleat Enchanter by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt is a compilation of the first three novellas in the Harold Shea/Enchanter series, “The Roaring Trumpet” (1940), “The Mathematics of Magic” (1940), and “The Castle of Iron” (1941, revised 1950). The Compleat Enchanter was first published as a Nelson Doubleday/Science Fiction Book Club hardcover in 1975 before being released as a Del Rey paperback in 1976, featuring a charming Brothers Hildebrandt cover painting. The three adventures in this book take place in the worlds of Norse Mythology, Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene, and Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando Furioso. De Camp and Pratt would later team up for two more Harold Shea stories, “The Wall of Serpents” (1953), and “The Green Magician” (1954). These stories fall outside of the Appendix N Book Club reading list since they were not collected in paperback until 1979, but Gary Gygax and Tim Kask must have been big fans since “The Green Magician” made its first reappearance in print since 1960 in issues 15 and 16 of The Dragon (1978)! In any case, the Harold Shea series undoubtedly left its mark on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, most obviously in the magical spell component requirements in The Players Handbook and the Against the Giants series of modules.

Within a year of D&D’s first release, the game became the biggest thing in the war gaming community. Not long after, the popularity of the game began to creep into the college world. College kids all over the world began forming clubs and entering the fantasy world of Dungeon and Dragons. What really propelled the game from an activity played by small groups of people to a name that would become familiar to everyone, whether they played it or not, was the unfortunate circumstances of a 16-year-old college student named James Dallas Egbert III. It was what happened to Egbert that began the belief in many that this fantasy roll-playing game was actually a promotion of such practices as Satanism, witchcraft, suicide, pornography, and murder.
