Where do orcs really come from? In this episode of the Asians Represent! podcast, Daniel and Drew sit down with Dr. Christopher LeCluyse, a professor of literature, media, and writing at Westminster University to discuss his new book, Race & Monstrosity in Dungeons & Dragons. Chris' work traces how depictions of “monstrous races” in the game are rooted in more than 2,000 years of history and how these influences continue to shape how race functions in the game. From ancient Greek descriptions of headless monsters to J.R.R. Tolkien's hierarchy of fantasy beings, this episode maps a clear picture of how real-world racial stereotypes became embedded in the DNA of fantasy gaming. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of racism, colonialism, violence, and the portrayal of monstrous races in fantasy media. In this episode, we cover: How Tolkien and Gygax "inherited", rather than invented, racial frameworks The parallel between the drow "evil black matriarchy" trope and the concurrent rise of the "welfare queen" stereotypes in American politics How race and power are manifested in early AD&D rules How 5th edition D&D's revised rules represent real progress, and where that work is still incomplete Alternative design approaches that deconstruct essentialism and gives players narrative agency over their ancestry Check out Race & Monstrosity in Dungeons & Dragons when it comes out next month - https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/race-and-monstrosity-in-dungeons-dragons/. Luke Gygax, the son of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, is collaborating with Wizards of the Coast (WotC) to return the Gygax name to the game’s original setting, Greyhawk. This move was engineered by Dan Ayoub, Dungeons & Dragons’ Head of Franchise, who publicly stated that the game had “lost its way” and that involving popular figures like Luke Gygax is an effort to set it on the “right path”. The collaboration will produce Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk (Melf was Luke Gygax’s original player character) and new adventures set in the world. WotC also announced a full presence at Gary Con to mend rifts with the Gygax family and reinforce their commitment to the community, with Ayoub affirming that retailers and “face-to-face physical play” will remain central to D&D. Catalyst announced a new core product line for BattleTech, including a Core Rulebook, Starter Box, and Core Box, all scheduled to launch at Gen Con. These releases move the game's entry point away from the Succession Wars and firmly into the ilClan era, introducing advanced tech like pulse lasers and Clan tech early on. The Starter Box replaces the older Beginner Box, featuring the Hammerhead and Kontio, while the Core Box replaces A Game of Armored Combat and Clan Invasion with eight mechs from various eras. The new Core Rulebook, built off the Battlemech Manual, incorporates significant changes from recent playtests, such as front-loaded unequal initiative and basing charge damage on the Target Movement Modifier (TMM). Games Workshop announced Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition, slated for a June release, with a goal to bridge the gap between narrative and matched play. The edition refocuses the lore on the Armageddon conflict, pitting Imperial Forces against Orks. A key rules change eliminates fighting over objective circles, replacing them with combat for pieces of terrain. GW will allow current 10th edition codexes to remain usable at launch, and the new edition will feature over 70 new detachments. Other updates include reducing stratagem stacking (one per unit per phase), allowing players to roll charge dice before determining targets, and bringing back Combat Disembarking from transports engaged in melee. Hours before Games Workshop's major announcement, the “biblical horror wargame” Trench Crusade launched its first true starter set, Carcass Front, which is available for pre-order at $129.99 and set for a late July release. The box set contains 16 new plastic miniatures split into two warbands: the mobile, smaller-count Heretic Naval Raiders and the high model count, melee-focused Procession of the Sacred Affliction, a zealous cult who practice religious penance by deliberately inducing leprosy. Carcass Front emphasizes narrative play value, including two full campaigns: The Path to Leviathan, a 2-player narrative, and a map-based campaign designed for 2–8 players to battle over resources. #dnd #battletech #warhammer40k #trenchcrusade Warmachine Frontier: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/warmachine-lost-damned-salvation-5274 Definitive HATE on MyMiniFactory: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/hate-the-definitive-miniature-collection-5301 Sean Aaberg's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/seanaaberg Low Life Sign Up: https://www.dungeondegenerates.com/ Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support us by Shopping at Miniature Market (afilliate link): https://miniature-market.sjv.io/K0yj7n Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/
Luke Gygax, son of Gary Gygax, is getting involved in Dungeons & Dragons again and he claims that the new DnD boss apologized for the bad blood between Wizards of the Coast and the Gygax family. They also seem to be wanting to roll DnD back to its roots. Dan and Paul discuss the often-overlooked idea that players can (and perhaps should) prepare for a D&D session. Using Gary Gygax's “Successful Adventures” section from the back of the AD&D 1E Player's Handbook, they explore how early D&D expected parties to organize missions, plan loadouts, coordinate spells, establish marching formations, avoid unnecessary encounters, and operate like a disciplined expedition. How do these expectations compare to modern table norms? What echoes of this philosophy appear in West Marches play? And what lessons can today's players still take from Gygax's advice? We'll dig into the text, test its ideas against practical experience, and look at how player preparation changes the feel of a campaign.

Gary Gygax (Grognard 13/Writer 10/Businessman 2) vs. Dave Arneson (Plaintiff 14/Storyteller 9/Writer 1) Game Wizards: The Epic Battle for Dungeons & Dragons By: Jon Peterson Published: 2021 400 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? The history of Dungeons and Dragons, TSR's meteoric rise, the fights that inevitably happen when something becomes enormously successful, and the catastrophes that follow when people are in way over their head. What's the author's angle? Peterson is the man when it comes to the history of RPGs and D&D in particular. He's basically a historian, and he has no dog in any of the fights. Who should read this book? I really liked this book, and I really liked everything I've read by Peterson. That said, I might recommend the podcast When We Were Wizards, as an easier entry point for people interested in the story. And of course if you have no interest in the battle between Arneson and Gygax or the crazy initial years of D&D, I would not recommend either. Specific thoughts: Gygax was a jerk, and he was dumb, but he also deserves 90% of the credit for D&D.

Before narrative arcs, there was Acererak." Dive into Tomb of Horrors Part II and uncover how D&D's most infamous deathtrap shaped the game we love (and sometimes fear). In Part II of the RPGBOT.Podcast's deep dive into Tomb of Horrors, the hosts examine the legendary module not just as a harrowing dungeon crawl, but as a historical artifact that reflects the design philosophies, challenges, and mindset of early Dungeons & Dragons. The discussion unpacks how Tomb of Horrors shaped player expectations, influenced dungeon design, and helped define the adversarial relationship between dungeon masters and players in early editions. The episode also explores how Gary Gygax's approach to game balance, storytelling, and player mortality in Tomb of Horrors laid the groundwork for decades of D&D design choices—both embraced and rejected by later generations.

Oh, the Libyan Gorgon. [Tries to look like he knows what he's talking about] This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we crack open an ur-Monster Manual, Ernst and Johanna Lehner's 1969 A Fantastic Bestiary. Essentially a Dover clip art book (and reissued by Dover under a different title) with some light historical context, there are textual clues that seem to indicate it was an important reference work for Gygax and company. And I think it might have partly inspired the idea of a highly illustrated hardcover book of monsters! * * * Instagram? Old news. Join the Vintage RPG Newsletter! Talking about Gygax, good and bad. (CW: Spicy takes)
Sick and tired of people writing 'Sir' on their character sheet at 1st level, Gary created the cavalier class to put a stop to that. Yeah, he probably didn't do it intentionally, but taking a look back, it seems like it was a pain in the butt to play a cavalier as written. #TTRPG #DnD #Gygax --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thedicearescreaming/support

TCW Podcast Episode 223 - D&D & Video Games 2E In the second part of our exploration of Dungeons & Dragons and its connection to video games, we examine the game's refinement and rise in popularity. D&D was a groundbreaking experience, brought to life through Gary Gygax's collaboration with others, particularly Dave Arneson, who developed many of its foundational concepts. The game evolved from miniature wargaming focused on medieval combat, with Tolkien-inspired high fantasy elements added later as an afterthought. These fantasy rules closely resembled those of Rules for Middle Earth but weren't universally embraced, as some players preferred the realism of traditional wargaming, making it challenging to satisfy both audiences. We also delve into the well-known controversy between Gygax and Arneson and the creation of the Blackmoor campaign setting. We explore how TSR released the original box set and then evolved it into AD&D. Additionally, we examine how RPGs began to take off as a whole new type of game that people could play. Finally, we look at how D&D became embroiled in the cultural backlash of the 1980s "Satanic Panic." Dungeon Masters takes a behind-the-curtain look into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, told through the lenses of the creator of the game, Gary Gygax, played by Wil Wheaton and of private investigator, William Dear, played by Jon Hamm, a swashbuckling tough guy in 1979. Gygax guides the audience through this incredible true story as our Dungeon Master, as we follow Dear on his quest to find Dallas Egbert, a Michigan State student, who supposedly disappeared in the steam tunnels under his University while enacting a real-life version of D&D. What Dear encounters on this journey and ultimately discovers, defies all expectations, and changes the culture as we know it. Written by award-winning journalist and author, David Kushner, based on his interviews with Gary Gygax, his research and writing about Dungeons & Dragons (RISE OF THE DUNGEON MASTER), and the missing person case which inadvertently made the game (in)famous. Dungeon Masters takes a behind-the-curtain look into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, told through the lenses of the creator of the game, Gary Gygax, played by Wil Wheaton and of private investigator, William Dear, played by Jon Hamm, a swashbuckling tough guy in 1979. Produced by Jon Hamm, Temple Hill and QCODE.
