Send us a textWelcome to you heard it here last where we talk about news, you've already heard.Professor Dungeon Master on his YouTube channel Dungeon Craft announced that the New D&D 2024 Players Handbook only sold 3,773 books in its opening week. That's right, what was announced as the fastest selling D&D book in history only sold 3,773 physical copies. The rest of those sales were digital over on DnD Beyond.https://youtu.be/hmTKrCeaFC8?si=rJ_LZ4RbK8YAHAYDHe followed that news up with a recent report that DnD Beyond has officially locked down their digital products.https://youtu.be/ndrfwFakQto?si=t9TfCEb9hntPTNNaThis is a quote from the DnD Beyond Support Page;“All digital content will only be available to view and use on the D&D Beyond website. An account will be needed to access the content. So, if you delete your account you will lose the content.”https://dndbeyond-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us/articles/7747225184788-Unlocked-Content-and-D-D-Beyond-Account-DeletionNow this isn't anything new to those of us who hate DnD. I learned this difficult lesson when I deleted my DnD Beyond Account during the OGL scandal. Remember kids, if you buy from DnD you don't own shit. You only rent it and they will take their ball and go home leaving you high and dry if you disagree with them. What's this mean for the ttrpg hobby? What's this mean for the business of ttrpg's? What's this mean for WoTC? Good thing I have Christina here to answer those questions.Christina, weigh in with a quote from Emmanuel Kent[Kick to Christina]I led with the DnD Beyond story so I could follow up with this one.https://www.enworld.org/threads/shadowdark-setting-looks-set-to-be-2025s-first-million-dollar-ttrpg-crowdfunder.712281/Shadowdark is an OSR style game from Kelsey Dionne that made a splash on Kickstarter in 2023 when it raised 1.4 million dollars. That is a massive payday for an independent game and got a lot of people dubbing it the D&D killer. Now that wasn't fair because it had nowhere near the market share that D&D had, but it is a cool game and a great independent game story…and then Shadowdark created a campaign setting. On March 11th of 2025 Shadowdark released Western Reaches on Kickstarter. It is a sandbox campaign setting for Shadowdark. It made a million bucks in less than 12 hours.Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast my be trying their damndest to kill TTRPG's, but the hobby aint dead. Far from it. With news like this it proves that the gamers out there are looking for a roleplaying product they can trust now that D&D has continued to stab them in the back and spit on their corpses.Throw away your D&D and play and support games made for you by people who like you.At least that's my thoughts.Christina?[Kick to Christina]An there you have it, All the news you've already heard.

Join Brook Bullock and Michael Cross as they dive into the exciting details of Campaign 3, highlighting the intriguing character of Dr. Elias Stone, a cleric inspired by the iconic Dr. Leonard McCoy from Star Trek. Michael shares his creative process behind developing Elias, emphasizing the character's 19th-century Americana roots and his role as a healer who embodies kindness and compassion. The duo discusses the collaborative world-building that has taken place among the cast, setting the stage for a narrative filled with steampunk elements and familiar archetypes from the Old West. As they explore Elias's backstory and personality traits, listeners are given a glimpse of the dynamics that will unfold in the campaign. With the launch date approaching, excitement builds for the new adventures awaiting the characters in this richly crafted world.Brook and Michael Cross engage in a lively conversation about the excitement surrounding Campaign 3 of their podcast. Michael, known as the 'demigod of Foley', shares his enthusiasm for the new campaign, emphasizing a return to their roots with a Western, late 19th-century aesthetic. The duo discusses how the characters will reflect archetypes from the Old West, blending them with traditional Dungeons & Dragons elements. Michael elaborates on his character, Dr. Elias Stone, a cleric inspired by the iconic Dr. Leonard McCoy from Star Trek. This character aims to embody the spirit of an old country doctor, complete with a healer's skills and a commitment to caring for those in need. The conversation delves into the collaborative nature of world-building for this campaign, highlighting their long-standing relationships and shared experiences as players over the past four years. As the discussion continues, Michael reveals the thought process behind Elias's creation, noting how the 2024 Players Handbook influenced him to simplify his approach and focus on a more traditional clerical role. The character's grounding in Americana allows for a unique blend of fantasy and realism, as Elias will not only wield magical healing powers but also employ mundane medical skills reminiscent of a 19th-century physician. The podcast also touches on deeper themes, like the impact of personal tragedy on character development, with Elias's backstory driving him towards a life of healing rather than despair, contrasting sharply with Michael's previous character, Gideon Block, who succumbed to alcoholism. The duo also explores the significance of character age and experience, with Elias being 49 years old and possessing a wealth of life experiences that will enrich the narrative. Michael's intention is to portray a seasoned character who can offer wisdom and perspective to younger adventurers. As they wrap up, the excitement for the campaign's launch on December 4th is palpable, with Michael hinting at more character details and interactions to come, all while maintaining a playful tone. This teaser not only sets the stage for what listeners can expect but also invites them into a world where old-fashioned values meet fantastical adventures, promising an engaging and heartfelt journey throughout Campaign 3.Takeaways: The new campaign is inspired by Americana and set in a late 19th-century western style. Michael Cross's character, Elias Stone, is designed as a healer with a unique backstory. The collaborative world-building process among the cast has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Elias Stone draws inspiration from the iconic Dr. Leonard McCoy of Star Trek fame. The character's personality will reflect kindness, with a somewhat crass bedside manner. The campaign aims to explore deeper character stories and relationships over the course of play. Links referenced in this episode:

Get ready to laugh as we break down the funniest ways status conditions wreck your DnD and Pathfinder characters! From being Charmed into helping the villain to running scared with Frightened or turning into a statue with Petrify—we've got it all. Tune in to this remastered episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast and find out why being Incapacitated is just an excuse for your party to make you the punchline. Summary Ever had your epic hero reduced to a gibbering mess because of a pesky status condition? Welcome to the wacky world of DnD and Pathfinder mishaps! In our uproarious roundup, we explore how your legendary warrior becomes a helpless bystander faster than you can say "natural one." First up, Charmed—when your mighty barbarian thinks the dragon is just a scaly best friend who wants to borrow the kingdom's keys. Then there's Dominated, where you become the DM's puppet, attacking your own party while they scream, "Not again!" Feeling brave? Not for long! Frightened turns your fearless paladin into a track star sprinting away from battle. Poison and disease make a cameo too, transforming your stout dwarf into a vomiting mess recalculating HP mid-barf. Let's not forget Petrified—the ultimate freeze frame. You're now modern art, and your friends are debating whether to pawn you or use you as a coat rack. Finally, Incapacitated leaves you lying on the battlefield contemplating life choices while everyone else actually plays the game. In short, status conditions are the universe's way of saying, "Don't take yourself too seriously." So next time you're turned into a potted plant, just roll with it—and hope someone has Greater Restoration handy! In DnD 5e, once the charm wears off, NPCs often become hostile. Players need to be careful when using charm spells as they can backfire socially. Dominate Person: This spell gives the caster full control over the target's actions. However, DMs are advised to use it sparingly against players to avoid removing their agency and reducing enjoyment. Frightened Condition: Fear mechanics have evolved. In earlier DnD editions, fear could stack and become more severe. In 5e, it imposes disadvantage on attacks and ability checks, while in Pathfinder 2 (PF2), it introduces a numerical system (Frightened 1, 2, etc.) that decays each turn. Poison and Disease: 3.x DnD made these effects more severe by causing ability score damage, making it difficult for players to track changes. In 5e, poisons primarily impose disadvantage, and diseases are less impactful, much to the hosts' disappointment. PF2 strikes a balance by introducing afflictions with less need for constant recalculations. Incapacitated: This condition is particularly devastating in 5e, as it strips away most actions, leaving characters vulnerable. In PF2, mental actions like recalling knowledge can still be performed, even when paralyzed. We debrief on D&D Direct and talk about the new 2024 Players Handbook, the upcoming "total rewrite" of the Dungeon Masters Guide, and potential balance issues to look out for until the new Monstrous Manual comes out. Also, we try to decide Wizards of the Coast employees were actively trolling Josh on the pronunciation of "Sigil" during GenCon, and Brandon makes another push for new box set releases when we talk about the two new Forgotten Realms books coming out as part of the 2024 refresh. Somewhere in there we also mention the Dragon Anthology. We recorded a couple of longer Deep Dive videos for Patreon that will come out over the next couple of weeks. One of them is on branding and strategy mistakes that WotC has made throughout this whole edition refresh and the other is a discussion about the business end of third-party content on D&D Beyond. Join Tyler, Ash, and Randall in the latest episode of The RPGBOT.Podcast as they dive deep into Epic Boons in Dungeons & Dragons! From the classic 2014 rules to the new 2024 updates, the hosts break down these powerful abilities for 20th-level characters. We explore what's new, what's missing, and what these changes mean for your high-level play. Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Tyler, Ash, and Randall dive deep into the world of epic boons in Dungeons & Dragons. The conversation quickly shifts to the main topic: epic boons, the powerful abilities available to 20th-level characters. The hosts explore the rules surrounding epic boons, offering examples from the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide, and share their thoughts on the usefulness of certain boons. As they compare the 2014 and 2024 rules, the hosts express disappointment in the lack of new additions and the removal of certain boons like the Boon of Quick Casting and Boon of the Stormborn. They also speculate on the potential for future updates to reintroduce or tweak these boons. The discussion moves on to the new boons in the 2024 rules, including the Boon of Combat Prowess and Boon of Energy Resistance, where the hosts analyze their benefits and drawbacks. In the final segment, they touch on the mechanics of invisibility and hiding, and discuss the impact of energy resistances in high-level play. Epic boons can be earned through major quests or notable accomplishments. The 2024 rules allow for the inclusion of bonus feats as a form of advancement after reaching level 20. Some epic boons from the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide include Boon of High Magic, Boon of Immortality, and Boon of Magic Resistance. Opinions on the usefulness of epic boons vary, with some boons being more powerful or desirable than others. Some Epic Boons did not make it into the 2024 rules, but they could still be used with some tweaks The hosts discuss the potential for future updates to include more Epic Boons The new Epic Boons in the 2024 rules offer interesting abilities for characters The Boon of Combat Prowess allows you to turn a missed attack into a hit once per round The Boon of Dimensional Travel allows you to teleport 30 feet as part of the attack or magic action The Boon of Fate allows you to add or subtract 2d4 from a d20 test once per short rest The Boon of Energy Resistance, which is new in the 2024 rules, grants resistance to a specific type of energy damage The hosts express disappointment in the lack of new epic boons in the 2024 rules compared to the 2014 rules. They discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each epic boon, highlighting their usefulness for different character classes. The Boon of Speed is particularly powerful for monks and rogues, while the Boon of Spell Recall is underwhelming. They speculate on the potential changes to monster stat blocks in the 2024 rules and how the epic boons may impact gameplay. Overall, they feel that the epic boons could have been more exciting and impactful. The mechanics of invisibility and hiding in D&D can be complex and have specific conditions for activation and maintenance. The hosts express frustration with the changes made to the Epic Boons in the new D&D book, feeling that it was unprofessional and negatively impacted content creators. Energy resistances can be valuable in high-level play, especially with the prevalence of damage types that bypass resistances to physical damage. It's time to roll the dice and dive into the latest edition of the Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook! With the release of the 2024 Rules, there's been a lot of buzz and speculation about the impact on classes, changes, and improvements. Today, we're diving deep into the changes and evaluating which classes come out as winners and which as losers in this new iteration. So grab your pencil, paper, and your favorite set of dice as we explore the exciting updates in the world of D&D. Let's get started! Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we review the 2024 Players Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). The team talks about the improved art in the book and the reordering of chapters to prioritize learning how to play the game before character creation. We discuss the inclusion of suggested traits based on alignment and attributes in character creation. We discuss the changes to the barbarian class, noting that some subclasses have become more usable. In this part of the episode, we go over the changes to various classes in the 2024 rules of Dungeons and Dragons. We cover the changes to the Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard classes. We highlight the improvements and nerfs to each class, as well as the impact on subclasses and specific features. We have mixed feelings about some classes, while others are seen as winners or losers in the update. In this final part of the episode, we discuss the chapters on Origins, Feats, Equipment, Spells, and the Appendices in the 2024 D&D Player's Handbook. We also let you know our opinions on the changes and improvements made in the new edition. Finally, we answer a listener question about optimizing marshal characters in the 2024 rules. Links Player's Handbook (affiliate link) Takeaways The 2024 rules for D&D have been released, and the hosts provide an overview of the changes in the new Player's Handbook. The art in the book has improved, with a mix of action-adventure and everyday life depictions. Character creation now includes suggested traits based on alignment and attributes, providing a starting point for role-playing. The artificer class is not included in the new handbook, disappointing some players. The barbarian class has seen improvements, with some subclasses becoming more usable. The 2024 rules of Dungeons and Dragons bring changes to various classes, with some classes seeing improvements and others experiencing nerfs. The Bard class remains mostly the same, with some quality of life improvements and a big upgrade at high levels. The Cleric class receives small quality of life improvements, detachment of armor from subclasses, and improved features like Divine Intervention. The Druid class gets offensive improvements for Moon Druids and quality of life improvements for Land Druids. The Fighter class benefits from weapon mastery, allowing for new and powerful combat options. The Monk class is considered the biggest winner of the 2024 rules, with improved features and more options for customization. The Paladin class sees changes to Divine Smite, making it a spell and limiting its usage per turn, but gains increased tankiness. The Ranger class receives mixed reviews, with an overemphasis on Hunter's Mark and potential challenges for Beastmaster Rangers. The Rogue class is seen as better due to the ability to do more than just sneak attack on their turn. The Sorcerer class experiences mixed changes, with improvements to some features but nerfs to powerful metamagic options like Twin Spell. The Warlock class is a mixed bag, with some improvements and downgrades to certain features and subclasses. The Wizard class remains largely the same, with minor tweaks to features and the ability to prepare more spells and change them on a short rest. The 2024 D&D Player's Handbook introduces changes and improvements to character creation and gameplay. The chapters on Origins, Feats, Equipment, Spells, and the Appendices provide detailed information and rules for players. The hosts discuss the impact of changes to feats like Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter. Marshal characters can now focus more on battlefield control and support, rather than pure damage. Back Dice Exploder season 4 on Backerkit now! Transcript Today I'm kicking off a miniseries of Dice Exploder episodes all about the Tarrasque in the room: Dungeons & Dragons itself. But before we get into that, I wanted to lay out for context where I'm coming from, what my relationship is like to "the world's greatest roleplaying game™" is like, and what questions I was hoping to answer with this series. If you listen to this show, you probably come from a community that's skeptical of D&D. I'm not personally a fan. But it's unquestionably doing something for many people, and I don't buy that they simply don't know any better. So what's the deal? What's good about Dungeons & Dragons?
