This episode is my 2023 book report and recommendations! Mostly because I simply HAVE to talk about the books I read to ANYONE who will listen…which just so happens to be YOU. And also because I know how much you all value book recommendations. Because your “to be read list” can never be too long, right? In this episode, I'll mention all the books I read this year, fiction and nonfiction, and hopefully you can walk away with some new recommendations to add to your TO BE READ list. ALSO, this will be the last episode of 2023. I'm taking a little bit of a break from podcasting to prepare for some wonderful things coming in January. In the meantime, be sure to join our Facebook group because our Weekly Circles ARE STILL HAPPENING even while the podcast is on break! Link in the show notes. Stay tuned book lovers!

This week's guest is MJ, the heart and mind behind the Instagram account, @dissident_daughtersMJ grew up in a conservative evangelical home where Focus on the Family reigned and her whole world consisted of family, church friends, and a few Christian homeschooling families. She believed wholeheartedly, feeling all the existential pressure as a child to “save” everyone around her.As a young woman, MJ was surrounded by social workers while in college, and these colleagues were curious. They didn't ask theological questions; they asked political questions, but for MJ it was all connected. She went to her pastor and was dismissed again and again.“I started asking myself, What are the criteria? What are [church leaders] really looking for? They're looking for somebody who doesn't question, doesn't challenge the status quo, doesn't have a viewpoint that encompasses anything that includes the world along with Christianity.”Now MJ uses her love of books and art to encourage others to hear different perspectives—one's inner life, relationships, systemic injustices, religion, and spirituality. Besides lengthening Arline's personal To-Be-Read list, MJ's Instagram has shown her that whatever one is convinced is true, there are other possible ways to view it.LinksInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dissident_daughtersInteractFor quotes, recommendations, transcripts and more see the full episode show noteshttps://gracefulatheist.com/2023/08/20/mj-dissident-daughters/Join the Deconversion Anonymous Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/deconversionGraceful Atheist Podcast Merch!https://www.teepublic.com/user/gracefulatheistpodcastSupport the podcast on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/gracefulatheistSecular Gracehttps://gracefulatheist.com/2016/10/21/secular-grace/Deconversionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/Deconstructionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/#deconstruction/Attribution"Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beatshttps://makaihbeats.net/

When I saw this, I had to have her return for another chat with us. We had a great time and covered a wide range of topics, including what mudcaves are, adoption and foster care, and what we might find in her chocolate stash (I'd never ask her to reveal where it's hidden!). My patrons get to hear about which craft she is currently enjoying the most, and it might surprise you! Murmur in the Mud Caves by Kathleen DenlyHe came to cook for ranch hands, not three single women.Gideon Swift, a visually impaired Civil War Veteran, responds to an ad for a ranch cook in the Southern California desert mountains. He wants nothing more than to forget his past and stay in the kitchen where he can do no harm. But when he arrives to find his employer murdered, the ranch turned to ashes, and three young women struggling to survive in the unforgiving Borrego Desert, he must decide whether his presence protects them or places them in greater danger.Bridget “Biddie” Davidson finally receives word from her older sister who disappeared with their brother and pa eighteen years prior, but the news is not good. Determined to help her family, Biddie sets out for a remote desert ranch with her adopted father and best friend. Nothing she finds there is as she expected, including the man who came to cook for the shambles of a ranch. When tragedy strikes, the danger threatens not only her plans to help her sister, but her own dreams for the future—with the man who's stolen her heart.Get your copy of Murmur in the Mud Caves.Oh, hello. You want to know more about me? I'm so flattered, but where do I begin? Let's see . . .I suppose if we are going to be friends, the first thing you should know is that I am a daughter of the One True King and without Him, none of this would be possible. You should also know that I am crazy-in-love with my wonderful husband of over nineteen years and we have four young children (okay so a couple have hit the double-digits but they'll always be my babies), three of whom grew under my heart and one who grew in it.We live in a modest house on twenty acres in the mountains of sunny California with nine adorable cats (who sometimes think they're dogs), and one dog who has aspirations of becoming a race horse.Wipe your feet and come on in. You could sit at the table, but my kids haven't cleaned up their schooling for the day (we homeschool). So let's settle on the couch for our chat. (Sorry about that stack of books, my To Be Read pile has gotten a little out of control. Just nudge it to the side.)Are you on Goodreads? I try to keep my reading status up-to-date there, but I admit some books do get missed. I'm also on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest. Are you? Let's follow each other!Visit Kathleen Denly's website.
