Today's guest is the inspirational Jessica Willis Fisher. She rose to fame as a member of the musical group, The Willis Clan, and in 2015 had her life chronicled on the reality TV series "The Willis Family" for TLC, where they were depicted as a close knit, wholesome musical family. That all changed in 2016, when the patriarch of the Willis family, Toby Willis, was arrested for child rape. Jessica comes clean about her complex childhood and the abuse she suffered at the hand of her father. In her memoir, Unspeakable: Surviving My Childhood and Finding My Voice, she bravely shares her story and her unique perspective on the challenges of life under the spotlight and the strength it took to break free from her family. This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. While in their youth, Jessica Willis Fisher and her eleven siblings were thrust into the spotlight for being the perfect musical family. Having achieved nation-wide fame on America's Got Talent, the Willis Fishers scored their own reality show in 2015, letting cameras into their pristine and heavily Christian home to document the daily lives of a happy, smiley family trying to make it in the famously non-toxic (just kidding) entertainment biz. So when allegations of child abuse and molestation broke out against the family's patriarch, Toby Willis, Americans and onlookers across the globe were in disbelief. How could this family, which had been put on a pedestal and idolized extensively as “picture perfect,” possess such insanely disturbing secrets? Because the world is fucked up, hellooo! But our listeners already knew that. On today's episode, Jessica joins us to discuss her story, as well as parallels she sees between her family and others that shared the reality show spotlight. She's begun releasing new music again as a form of healing—you can check out her album Brand New Day here. You can also read her memoir, Unspeakable: Surviving My Childhood and Finding My Voice, here. Please note, this series includes details of sexual abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview TLC's The Willis Family. THE WILLIS FAMILY RETURNS TO TLC WITH A MUSIC AND FAMILY-FILLED SECOND SEASON All-New Season Begins March 15th at 10/9c Brenda and Toby Willis and their 12 children sang their way into viewers' hearts in the first season of THE WILLIS FAMILY, which averaged 1.4M P2+ viewers. Now, the Willis' are back with an all-new type of balancing act as they swap life on the road for their home in Nashville in the new season premiering on Tuesday, March 15th at 10/9c. The family is busy recording and producing a new album, but they encounter a few speed bumps along the way…literally. From birthday celebrations and learning how to drive to rehearsing for gigs and prepping for big performances, being home in Nashville is a welcomed change of pace from the rigors of life on the road. But, after months of being on the road, they come home to a surprise at their home that changes everything, and then a shocking discovery halts production of their album. Tensions are high as deadlines come and go, but the family does their best to navigate the situation with a positive attitude. With homeschooling, scheduling, and extracurricular activities, everyone is busy scrambling to get everything done. Also this season, viewers will learn more about the older siblings as Jair moves on from his broken engagement and Jeanette starts dating. As the older kids grow up and follow their own passions, the younger children step into bigger roles of the family band. More so than ever, all of the children are dedicated to making their family's upcoming performances the best ones yet.
