When you are excited about something, how do you show up?Do you wear excitement and passion on your sleeve for all to see? Maybe your personality is more low-key and strategic, and it is less obvious when you're really excited about an idea, a vision, or being a part of something.Or maybe you adapt and edit yourself, muting your responses to play it cool for fear you won't be taken seriously. Yes, it's essential to consider your role, environment, and audience when you feel energized about something. But if we're constantly focused on who we should be, how we should act, and what the right thing to say is, it's hard to have hope and a vision for the future. Meg Raby Klinghoffer does not feel weighed down by messages about playing it cool and downplaying her excitement and joy anymore. She is emphatically all in with helping others envision how the spaces where we live, work, and play can be inclusive for those with invisible disabilities. She is becoming a contagion to create spaces where we can all be welcome and feel comfortable being ourselves, from concerts to museums to schools and beyond.Meg is the author of the My Brother Otto series, a Speech-Language Pathologist, a writer for Scary Mommy, and a full-time employee of KultureCity, the nation's leading nonprofit in sensory inclusion. She is also autistic. At any given moment, Meg is thinking about how to better love the humans around her and how to create positive change without causing division.Listen to the full episode to hear:How receiving an autism diagnosis and owning that identity has allowed Meg to advocate for herself more freelyHow to respectfully approach learning more about and supporting the autistic adults in your lifeHow having an autistic community helped Meg let go of old rules and embrace her identityHow KultureCity addresses the need for macro-level change to make spaces more supportive and inclusiveMeg's vision for moving beyond awareness or acceptance to true inclusionLearn more about Meg Raby Klinghoffer:KultureCityScary MommyInstagram: @author.meg.rabyLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Somebody's Daughter: A Memoir, Ashley C FordKamala Harris and the Threat of a Woman's Laugh - Sophie Gilbert, The AtlanticWe're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation, Eric GarciaYung PuebloPost Malone - Hollywood's BleedingLauren Daigle - Rescue3 Body ProblemThe Jacksons: An American Dream

His work as a director/writer/producer covers multiple genres and multiple job titles. In 2019, he directed the DC Universe show 'DC Universe All Star Games' making him the first ever Korean-American to direct a tv show for DC Comics. Jon also has a horror podcast with Amazon/Wondery/Morbid Network called “That Was Pretty Scary” which he co-hosts with Freddie Prinze Jr. Jon is also a mental health advocate with a big passion for outreach and erasing the stigma surrounding mental health discussions. When he's not working he enjoys playing xbox and watching movies and tv shows. As of the posting of this podcast, Jon's beloved and adored Corgi, Shelby, passed away, which was a heart wrenching experience for Jon. He loved that pup and mentioned her on the podcast as we spoke so our hearts go out to Jon and the soul of Shelby as they heal through that transition together.  This conversation with Jon has been a long time coming. We have run in many of the same circles but never had the opportunity to chat and this was an epic convo! Jon was so vulnerable, direct, honest and funny and I look forward to spending more time together with him when we both speak on panels organized by Kulture City called Kulturally Asian where we will discuss breaking down the stigmas around mental health within the Asian community and wherever else the convos take us. Please check out our show notes to find out how to connect with Jon more. I hope you will enjoy our connection as much as I did – in fact, I know you will! Many restaurants have bustling activity, loud noises, energetic crowds, and other elements that make them fun for many guests, but those same features can trigger people with sensory sensitivities, such as autism, dementia, PTSD, and ADHD. Ron Hsu, culinary director of Humble Pie and Lazy Betty restaurants in Atlanta, decided he wanted as many people as possible to enjoy his food and hospitality, so he worked with KultureCity, a non-profit organization that specializes in people with sensory issues, to train his staff how to serve customers with those and similar conditions. With the Sensory Inclusive Certification from KultureCity, Humble Pie and Lazy Betty's teams now can assist guests with sensory sensitivities in order to give them the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible. That includes recognizing people who might have those conditions, since not all sensory sensitivities are or look the same.

I'm amazed every single week at how generous people are with their time in agreeing to jump on the show, but every now and then a guest says yes who I reached out to 1000% expecting a polite no if not total radio silence. And this week, we have two of them who I admire so much not only as separately very impressive individuals but also as a wonderful couple who navigate careers, compromise and continual growth in a way that made me fall a little bit in love with them as you'll probably hear. On the one hand, we have an Adelaide boy, Joe, whose big dream was playing basketball for his state but who went on to find himself at the pinnacle of the game playing for Utah Jazz in the NBA and leading the Boomers to our first Olympic medal ever in Tokyo earlier this year. On the other, we have Renae, a superstar netballer tearing up the court for the Melbourne Vixens and Australian Diamonds pulling in a host of accolades along the way before she retired to become a Mum. You can see why I couldn't believe they were happy to sit down to share the yay especially as it was their first interview together in two years and Joe's first since the Olympics and as usual I loved tracing through their ways to yay but most enjoyed the parts we don't hear about as much. With everything from the REAL story of how they fell in love, the challenge of moving countries with three kids and juggling two big careers, their son's diagnosis of autism, and the many endearing in-betweens of the Ingles family, I so enjoyed getting to know two hard-working, family-focused humans who are far more normal than their bios might suggest. Their work with charities Kulture City and 4 ASD kids nearly brought me to tears and Renae is just weeks away from running her first marathon to raise funds for the fight for inclusion and acceptance spurred by her son Jacob and his bestie Oliver who face their own fears and challenges everyday. Peter Shankman and you are listening to another episode of Faster Than Normal, which is always nice. It's great to have you guys. I hope you're enjoying your day, wherever in the world, you might be. We're going to Washington state today and we're going to talk to Jason Hsieh, who's the founder of https://lakikid.com/ a small and growing company that provides quality and affordable products that help neuro-diverse children with their daily challenges.  They're an e-commerce company and Jason founded it. They help kids with special needs like autism ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and they provide support education and products. In 2013, Jason’s son Keanu, best name ever, was diagnosed with autism and ADHD at the age of two, while they were still living in Japan.  They moved to Seattle Washington because they just couldn't find the help their son needed back in Japan.  We're going to talk about that,  In the winter of 2017, Jason founded https://lakikid.com/ with the mission to help kids with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder….processing disorder by providing support advice and products that will reduce anxiety, improve attention, span, improve, sleep, and embrace confidence for the kids.  It is his mission to let neuro-diverse kids live as full a life or a life full of possibilities as possible. Talk to me, Jason, welcome to Faster Than Normal, thank you for being here.  Hey, good morning. How are you? Thank you for having me on your podcast.  Definitely tell me about. So I've heard from other people that in Japan, it is very hard to get the resources needed to deal with any kind of neuro-diversity.  Is that true?  I would say a 100% true and that it's not just in Japan... and I'm from Taiwan. My wife's from Japan after we got married, we moved to back to Japan, but that's also the case for Taiwan as well, because I think we, in alot of Asian community and Asian countries. There's a huge stigma around mental disabilities that people tend to avoid talking about it.  Pretending it doesn't exist. What does try to hide it?  So that's kind of that kind of mentality in the society lead to lack of resources and lack of openness to openly talk about those kind of issues.  I imagine it would be difficult if there is a stigma around it that that getting help and getting support and then coming out and talking about it in itself would just be difficult. Of course for sure, and that's something I also struggled with when I first learned about my son's diagnosis back then, and I actually went through almost six months of denial. I refused to accept that there's something wrong with my son because we, my family does not, no one else to have mental disabilities.  Like how can this happen to my son? Just doesn't really make sense, and I think that's a process that… alot of the parents, especially Dad’s, I think goes through a lot more than a Mom, because I think we don't interact with the kids as much as the Mom’s do, and that tends to kind of create some kind of barrier.  And also as men, we tend to try to fix stuff, but Autism, ADHD or something like that is not something you can fix. That's something you need to create. Well, I guess, make it better and make improvement, but you couldn't really fix that kind of thing.    And you said your son was diagnosed at age two in Japan.  So when he was diagnosed, what did the doctor say? You know, I mean, he told you, OK, your son has, you know, a central processing disorder, ADHD. Um, did he…. was there...,  was there help available?  What... what happened? I mean, cause you obviously moved to... you moved to Washington, you moved to Seattle. Um, was there just nothing available? So, um, that's actually a perfect example for this is we didn't even find out about it until my wife pointed something out was kind of strange because every time she would take our son to the playground, he doesn't play with any other kid. He tends to play in his own corners for the whole time, for like one or two hours straight.  He doesn't even look at any other kids during the whole time. So that sounds really strange to my wife and that's where she brought up, uh, the proposal. OK, maybe we should have to have him take a beat, take a look at, and the first thing we got half of after we talked to the doctor in Japan is like, OK, this is a potential issue.   But unfortunately in the area that we used to live in, which we live in Tokyo, one of the largest metropolitan areas  you can imagine you have almost as much population, as the city of New York, but we can only go to 2 therapy centers that provide any kind of services for our son with the kind of symptoms that he has.   So that is not a good situation to being in, to living in the city was population over 10 million people, but you can only go to two locations to find help.  That's pretty amazing when you think about it, that that's all that. Um, is available at, out of, you know, you look at, uh, Tokyo and, and, and, and cities like that, and you think that they're so progressive, when in fact it's actually very the opposite.  Unfortunately that's a 100%t true, even so, they are very technology-wise, they are very advanced, but when you come to mental disability and kind of services that you can get, I think they are of these 10 year behind the United States and a lot of the Western countries. Hmm. So let's talk about https://lakikid.com/  You moved, you moved to Seattle and you realized, okay, you're just going to start a company that will help these kids because what, there was nothing available. I mean, there was obviously a lot more support available here. So what prompted you to start the company?  I think it's really just by connecting with other families that also have kids with special needs, and also at that time, the biggest struggle we have, is the insurance that we initially got. When we moved back here, it doesn't cover ABA therapy, which is an intense one-on-one behavior therapy that a lot of the kids with autism will use. And I was also trying to find out additional ways to supplement our family income.  That's why the idea of creating a business and helping other families, kind of similar to ours, that's where the idea was coming from, and also by talking to other families that also have similar issues, but they couldn't really find a lot of affordable products and solutions that can really help their kids, that's... that's where the idea originally come from. And we have since grown to something a little bit bigger than that, which I can talk a little bit more. . .    Yeah. tell me, so tell me about the company. Tell me about the products, tell me about what you do, talk about it.  For sure. So https://lakikid.com/ as a company, we are quote “mission is to empower support and educate kids with, uh, different sensory issues.”  And we partner with, um, different non-profit organizations. One of the biggest non-profits that we partner with is called https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/….start with K.  Uh, they have, uh, one of the, um, they are an international non-profits. They have locations in both US, Canada, Canada, Australia, and UK. I see  right now, they have over... 500 different locations, uh, inside one of the biggest programs called https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/and I'm just honored that we are able to partner with the non-profit and by providing sign of our product into their program and what their programs do, is still go into locations like zoos,  aquariums, NBA stadiums, football and baseball arenas, and they'll do, they'll do three things  for all those locations.  First, they will provide staff training so the staff is aware of the sensory challenges for the kids that have ADHD or Autism will face when they go to a public arena like NBA stadiums.  Second, they will provide a physical tool that's free to use for the family, they call a sensory bag.  Inside the sensory bags,  we have noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, and a weighted blanket, which we designed for  https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/ for them to use. Our weighted blanket is unique in the way that we make it.  A, the material is different that kids can write on the blanket itself, use a water pen, so it's a 100% interactive, and last but not least, is they also help those arenas and locations to build sensory rooms, which is essentially a quiet space that a family can go to in case the kids is having a meltdown now, uh, while attending those kinds of events. Interesting. So it's, you're thinking more of a bigger picture in that regard, it's not just to, to help the child, you know, when they're at home when they have it, It's, it's, it's, it's more of a global thought.  Of course. I think we, uh, at our core, we believe in the sensory inclusive movement that https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/ is pushing, and it's all about creating a more accepting environment, not just at home and classroom, but also in the public, in the public, the general public as well. What's the response been?   Oh, https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/ and us, um, I think collaboration has gone a long way and the response has been very positive and of course, um, like everything else, uh, we all get affected because of the COVID situations, because all the location, I just mentioned almost every one of them got shut down because of COVID and including our business, because we do a lot of, uh, um, transaction with  school, and as you know, majority of the schools, oh gosh, shut down at the same time last year when the COVID situation happened, so it has been a very tough year for us last year, and we are kind of struggling right now, trying to recover from, from the, from the fallout of that. But hopefully this year will be a much better year.   Cool. So tell me what you have planned for the future for https://lakikid.com/ ? Yeah, so one of our biggest programs that originally were planning to launch last year, but because of COVID, we didn't happen, but we have a new program we're working on called Sensory Inclusive Classrooms, which the idea is to implement what  https://www.kulturecity.org/sensory-inclusive/ is already doing in the NBA stadiums and all the different locations I mentioned earlier, but inside a public school environment, by providing a similar kind of training for the general education teacher, for the parent educators, and also help them provide some of the tools, like sensory tool that the teacher can use in the classroom and also helps out of the school to build sensory room if they have the budget and the space to do so.  Awesome. Are you... are you looking at partnering with, uh, other schools or districts or things like that? That's one thing we're working on. We do have a pilot program here in Washington that, uh, implementing before COVID, but because of the COVID situation, everything kind of got shut down. We are kind of waiting to see…. some of the schools are already starting to reopen here in Washington, but not all of them. So kind of waiting to see what the situation is going to turn out and how the vaccination roll-out is going to be before we decide what we’re going to do with the school program again.  What has, uh, how has your son, uh, adapted with, with COVID and with homeschooling and all that?  I would say that was one of the biggest struggles.  That's very common for the parents in our community, in myself and my wife included because it's very hard to focus even in-person, I mean, let alone saying remote learning because you're just staring at the screen and that’s something my son definitely still struggles with, um, focusing and, um, like being able to pay attention in class because he has not just Autism, but  ADHD as well.  So yeah, totally. I could see the... the biggest problem for me was the lack of movement, you know, running around, running around and around and everything just stops, you know, and move... movement is living for someone with ADHD.  So not being sort of just being stuck at home and not really doing anything has been brutal.    For sure, and that's one more thing I want to share that I actually didn't realize I had ADHD myself until I was doing all the research and all the study for my son and the more research and the more study I was doing, I realized I was checking 9 out of the 10 boxes for…. that was ADHD myself. More and more, more and more parents, more and more parents get diagnosed because their children get diagnosed and they realize, wait, this looks really familiar.  Exactly. Yeah. It's, it's kind of, it kind of explained my, my childhood story because I went to five different high schools myself, because I sweat a lot during school and I couldn't really pay attention, and I didn't know why. Then I was just keep on being told that I was, I wasn't a very good student, but now with the diagnosis... is kind of explaining a lot of the things that happened to me when I was young.  Yeah. Jason, how can people find more, uh, what's the website for https://lakikid.com/ ?  Yeah, they can find more https://lakikid.com/  It's spelled as lakikid.com. We have a monthly video block that we partner with occupational therapists, and we also have different educational materials that people can check out our product. And most of... most of the, um, we have a lot of free resources that we're trying to provide to the families as well. Awesome. Let’s just say, it wasn’t the best direction for an actor I’ve ever heard. We also discuss his first time performing on Broadway as well as on TV. What it’s like to shoot an episode of Billions, what show he would like to have a recurring roll on and the difference between theater and TV. Kelly talks about his Cameo page www.cameo.com/kellyaucoin and how he donates a portion of every message/chat to his favorite charity KultureCity ( www.Kulturecity.org ) I had a great time talking with Kelly and I know you will like this one, even if (somehow) you’ve never seen him on Billions, or The Americans, or any of the multitude of other TV shows or theater productions he has been in.

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 037 Founder of LakiKid: Sensory Tools for Home and Classroom with Jason Hsieh NORD, the National Organization for Rare Diseases invited me to be a speaker at the 2020 Living Rare, Living Stronger Patient and Family Forum on a breakout panel for caregivers. I'm going to be talking about stress reduction and emotional well being as a caregiver and I'd love for you to join virtually July 18th-19th, 2020.  Today I'm talking to Jason Hsieh, a local father whose son was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. There were limited resources and therapy opportunities in Japan at the time of the diagnosis, so his family moved to Seattle to get the help they needed for their son. He struggled to find affordable, quality products to help with his son's sleep, anxiety and sensory challenges so he created his own brand instead. LakiKid is a product design company and also a community of families helping each other through patient support groups and live Facebook seminars.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How did your story begin in Japan? My special needs journey started in 2013 when my oldest son was diagnosed with autism and ADHD while my wife and I were living in Japan. In Japan and most of the Asian countries, the support and therapy you can get for kids on the spectrum or with any type of mental disability is very limited. It has to do with the overall culture and how most communities sync where mental disability is a taboo topic. People don't like to talk about it, they tend to hide it and parents don't like to confront it. It happened to me personally because the first 6 months after the diagnosis, I was in total denial and refused to believe something was wrong with my son because no one else had similar issues in my family. I refused to believe it. I run into a lot of parents, especially dads, that are in this denial phase. We as men like to fix things, but when you have kids with autism or ADHD, you can't fix them. You can help them to become better versions of themselves and that's why we decided to move to the United States in 2015 so we could find better resources and opportunities for our son to be successful.  Did you feel isolated and feel a need to connect with others in your community? Definitely. I can talk to my relatives, but none of them understand what I'm going through mentally. If you don't have a kid with special needs, you don't know what it's like. My son was non-verbal until he turned 6. We were doing a lot of speech therapy and now we're on the opposite end of the spectrum and he's talking way too much and can't stop talking. I didn't realize that I have mental disability myself. I started doing a lot of research for my son and the more research I was doing, the more I started to realize that I have ADHD myself. I was living with it all this time and didn't know what it was and didn't know how to deal with it. Can you tell us about your podcast and videocast? Ask An Autism Mom is done live on Facebook once a week on Thursday at 4pm PT / 7pm ET. We started with a focus on autism, but the more we do, the more we realize how other families and children can benefit from the resources. While the core of the podcast is around autism, we also share information that can be beneficial for parents who have kids with ADHD, sensory processing or down syndrome. Our goal is to inform and empower families so they can help move their kids along in the journey. Sensory Fitness Live is led by an Occupational Therapist who owns a business called Sensory Fitness. He had in person classes for kids before Covid-19, so we've partnered with him to turn his in-person classes into an online format with activities such as sensory diet.  Can you tell us about your company LakiKid? I started the company in 2017 because I was trying to figure out how to help my son and other families facing the same situation as us. Most of our items are low cost, ranging from $10-$40. I talk to teachers, occupational therapists and also get feedback from other parents on what products we provide. One of the new products we launched last year was a product designed for a nonprofit organization called KultureCity. They have many programs and one of the biggest is called Sensory Inclusive Initiative, available in NBA stadiums, football and baseball arenas, zoos, aquariums and airports. They provide staff training so they are aware of the sensory challenges individuals face when they visit a venue. They also provide sensory bags, free for families to access and use, which includes noise cancelling headphones, fidget toys and a weighted blanket. We designed the weighted blanket for them to use in their program. Lastly, KultureCity helps arenas to build out a sensory room that is a quiet, safe space for families to go to as needed. We have partnered with them and worked alongside them for two years and I really love their mission.   Did you have issues around the school setting that you had to figure out for your son or which inspired any specific piece of your advocacy for making schools more inclusive? The school system here in the US is so different and each city and district has a different setup. Some have more resources and some have zero resources. We have a really good IEP team in the district we are in and my son's special education teacher is really engaged in what my son is doing in the classroom. Even in the current situation with COVID, they are using Google classrooms, meeting daily with sessions for writing, reading and social skills. Unfortunately, not all families and school districts have the resources to have such a comprehensive program. By talking to other parents, I see that gap in the educational system. The US is ahead of the curve compared to other countries, but there is still a lot of work ahead.  What advice do you have for parents in the beginning of their journey? Be open minded to a diagnosis and talk to other parents. Join our support group, which is free to join. If you talk to other parents, you will find support because other families are facing similar issues. Each child has individual needs, but we're all sharing a common struggle.  LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED NORD Living Rare, Living Stronger 2020 Registration https://rarediseases.org/living-rare-forum/ LakiKid https://lakikid.com/ Autism Parent Support Group https://lakikid.com/pages/autism-parent-support-group Sensory Fitness Live with Matt Sloan https://lakikid.com/pages/sensory-fitness-live Ask An Autism Mom https://lakikid.com/pages/ask-an-autism-mom LakiKid FREE Printable Social Story https://lakikid.com/pages/parents-survival-guide-to-coronavirus-covid-19#ebook KultureCity https://www.kulturecity.org/ Once Upon a Gene - Ep 019 - Neena Nizar and the Jansen's Foundation https://effieparks.com/podcast/008-tanjs-akayy-jr78y-ja2e8-zanza-njkxy-83esr-z2wkz-kx2a4-3zgjf TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify Apple Podcasts Stitcher Overcast CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast/?hl=en Built Ford Tough Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1877643259173346/

In this episode Dr. Annette Nunez and Maylene Johnson chat with Michele Kong, M.D., an empowering Autism Mom and Co-founder of KultureCity. Michele shares her journey of how her son's autism, "the invisible disability," left her family feeling socially isolated.  Through her journey she connected with other families who shared similar experiences with social isolation.  This led her to ask the question of, " How do we change it?"  Change happens by changing the culture and that is how KultureCity was created.  Acceptance and inclusion are key factors for integrating not only the individual, but also the family into society and the community.  KultureCity is a movement and only when everyone buys into it, there is a culture shift and change for true acceptance and inclusion regardless of the each individual's challenges.  The core of KultureCity is to make the never possible.  Listen to this episode to find out more about KultureCity and to find a site near you.   IN THIS EPISODE: MINDSHIFT (takeaways) For parents, know that you are never alone, especially in those long silent hours and long nights. It may feel like you are alone, but know that there is someone always there for you. Never give up! The love and drive you have for your child will be enough to keep you going. You are going to get told, "no " many times. Know that it is possible to overcome the "no’s" and "nevers." It requires hope and love.  As a community we need to pick up the responsibility and burden and together with these families meet them where they are. By working together it is possible to make it a reality where there is inclusion for everyone regardless of what the challenges are.

She’s leading the new campaign to help everyone understand that even though those with autism may struggle to use words to express love, they still do. Traci says, “KC is launching a new national campaign called Love Without Words. This campaign is designed to show that while people with autism sometimes have difficulty demonstrating love verbally, it does not mean that they are not capable of love.” Traci Johnson, courtesy of Kulture City Traci Johnson, courtesy of Kulture City “We have launched this campaign with different celebrities, influencers and companies,” she continues. “In this campaign, we are having these celebrities and influencers show how they demonstrate love on a daily basis without using words. We then have a call to action to ask everyone that we are reaching how they, too, show love without words. And of course, there is also a donation aspect as well.” Traci notes that people with autism are often poorly understood. “We often face the challenge of people not realizing that children (and adults) with autism are a lot like able-bodied individuals, as well. People often think that just because someone has autism means that they don’t have feelings or emotions. This could not be further from the truth.” The misunderstandings people have, lead to conscious and sometimes unintended discrimination, she says. “We live in a world where there is still racism, bigotry and discrimination and these feelings often are directed towards people with disabilities, such as autism.” ---------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2giv1Qm. Dr. Julian Maha founded KultureCity about three years ago, shortly after his son was diagnosed with autism. The diagnosing physician, Maha says, told him his son would likely have to be institutionalized. Motivated by that challenge, Maha set out to create a nonprofit that would actually drive greater impact in the lives of those affected by autism. Maha really believes he is completely reinventing the model for nonprofits. Last year, Microsoft MSFT -1.15% launched Windows 10 with the #UpgradeYourWorld campaign I covered here. KultureCity was one of ten nonprofits recognized by Microsoft as part of that campaign, suggesting that Maha has created something different from typical nonprofits. Maha asserts that the innovations he’s implementing at KultureCity make him “a true social entrepreneur.” He says, “ We are on a mission to fundamentally change the culture of how autism is viewed by society and to show the world that these individuals not only have potential but the means to achieve that potential.” One of the key innovations that Maha has created is a diversity of revenue sources. He identifies seven different revenue sources: ... Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://onforb.es/23ng2ne. This week’s episode of Birmingham Shines features a conversation with Dr. Julian Maha, an emergency medicine physician and co-founder of KultureCity, an impact driven and award-winning nonprofit that is based in Birmingham but with a global presence. Dr. Maha and his wife conceived the idea for KultureCity after their oldest son was diagnosed with autism several years ago. KultureCity is designed to be a real community of volunteers and supporters who work to help families directly and to be advocates for the types of systemic change that will help individuals with autism achieve and live out their full potential as human beings. The teasers tell you a little bit about what Julian and I talked about, but he also shared two specific stories of how care and the right interventions helped two young men with autism move from being essentially ignored by society to valuable contributors. One of these young men earned a Ph.D. in physics. The other is now well-adjusted and working at Panera Bread, even though he’s still non-verbal. We also talk about some of the research that’s being done to better understand the causes of autism, including the role of environmental factors as genetic triggers. You’ll find links and full show notes to this episode at http://BirminghamShines.com, where you can also sign up to get email updates, subscribe to the show or even download it for your audio library if you want to keep a copy.  A special thank-you to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for letting us record this conversation outside on a beautiful day last week. Connect with Kulture City: http://www.kulturecity.org/ Isn’t it awesome to hear the stories of nonprofits right here in Birmingham who are working hard to bring about positive change to our city, state and world and to make life better for everyone, through service and caring. If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll go back and listen to episode 32, which features Jason Carroll of Red Mountain Grace, another nonprofit that’s working to help families who are facing medical challenges. But they offer an entirely different type of service. And episode 28 features a conversation with Nelson Brooke about the work of the Black Warrior Riverkeeper to protect one of Birmingham’s main sources for drinking water and a major economic engine in west central Alabama. I hope you’ll do something this week that makes you shine--and that makes the world a brighter place for everyone.

Today’s guest is Dr. Julian Maha, the Founder of one of the newest and best-reviewed non-profits in the United States, KultureCity. What does it mean exactly to be a best-reviewed non-profit? Every dollar and every experience that KultureCity raises or provides it tracked and directly related to the impact they have on serving their mission. They have already been recognized by Bill Gates and Microsoft as one of the top ten non-profits in the nation and at the time of this recording have impacted over 15,000 lives of those living with autism. Their mission is to help create a world where all individuals with autism and their families can be accepted and treated equally. I’m really excited for you to hear this podcast and challenge you to think while you're listening to Julian speak. What is the difference between sympathy and empathy? Which one do you have for those living with autism? If you can empathize, you can understand what someone with autism is going through because you have direct experience with it. If you can sympathize, you can still feel strongly for an individual and their family living with autism, but might not have direct experience with it. Whichever one you fall into, it is important to feel one of these two towards an individual or family living with autism, as it is truly the best way to live a life of compassion and understanding. Your compassion will help organizations like KultureCity be one step closer to world-wide acceptance of this often invisible disability. I hope you enjoy the show!

Autism is the fastest growing developmental diagnosis. It is more often diagnosed in children than diabetes, HIV and cancer combined. About four years ago, Julian Maha and his wife received a diagnosis of autism for their son Abram. At the time, they were told that they would need to institutionalize their son. After a very brief period of shock and mourning from the news, the Maha family, both physicians and business people, made a decision that would change the course of their life, the life of their son and the lives of thousands of families who are dealing with Autism. They formed an organization, KultureCity. KultureCity has an aim of shifting how autism is perceived and how autistic individuals are treated in our society. They also have a mission to create a business model that allows them to sustain their impact over time through multiple revenue streams. In this episode of Social Entrepreneur, we discuss: The back story behind the foundation of KultureCity. Their goals and strategies. How KultureCity is changing the perception of people with autism. A world where every child regardless of their medical diagnosis has a chance at a future without limits and is accepted and included,” he concludes.
