Last week, Cruise Planners CEO Michelle Fee and Norwegian Cruise Line sales exec John Chernesky joined cruise editor Andrea Zelinski and host Rebecca Tobin to talk about the new cruise-ship class of 2025. This week, they're talking about Wave season, the industry’s period of big sales and good deals, and general trends. Is year’s Wave a wave or a tsunami? Other topics of note: Does Wave start in January, or has it moved backwards into the holiday season? And what’s the story with onboard spending? This week, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings will report its Q4 and full-year 2024 results, and that will provide additional color into how this year’s Wave is going. We’ll try to provide an update to that in our upcoming Folo episodes. This episode was recorded Feb. 5, nearly three weeks ahead of NCLH's earnings call. The episode has been edited for length and clarity. Jeannette talks to the fabulous Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Vice Chairman, External Affairs for the Royal Caribbean Group and author of “Making Waves: A Woman's Rise to the Top Using Smarts, Heart and Courage". Lisa joins the show to talk about her fascinating business background, how she conquered the world of business, and what's coming in her future. Lisa talks about what makes a great leader, why women deserve a more prominent role in all aspects of life, and how the power of courage can transform your path through life. She also discusses her book, and talks about how it is built upon the transferrable lessons from her own life in business. KEY TAKEAWAYS People are drawn to leadership and magnetic power of those who steer the ships. True leaders are those we can lean on during the stormier times. Learning is not just about seeing the things we aspire to. It's about recognising what doesn't work, and calculating that into our life plan, too. Everyone has an ego, but the problems arise when we are led solely by it, instead of using it as an accelerating force. Many who enter business near the top don't arrive with the smarts and the skills that you can only gain by climbing the ladder progressively. BEST MOMENTS "I learned that a great leader is a great leader. And that's what people are looking for. Captains aren't looking for someone who was a captain to be their leader at the end of the day." "I always find it serendipitous that I ended up in the cruise business, hospitality on the ocean. And it's like this. My life came full circle and it was through no plan." "I was a woman who did it. And, you know, the subtitle of Making Waves is a woman's rise to the top using smart and courage." "I've had to be very conscious of that. You know, when I was my first promotion was going from a salesperson to a regional sales manager, which meant that I went from an individual contributor."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Prior to that, she served as President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises from 2014 to 2023, the first woman to take the helm of a Royal Caribbean Group brand and one of the few women then leading a multi-billion dollar brand. Lutoff-Perlo is a recognized trailblazer in the global hospitality industry. She was the driving force behind transforming and re-defining today's relaxed luxury cruise experience with a bold, innovative approach to ship design and service for both the industry and the Celebrity Cruises brand. Launching Celebrity's Edge Series in 2018, the ships were immediately hailed as game-changing for the industry and recognized on TIME Magazine's annual “World's Greatest Places” list. She also led the Celebrity brand through a digital transformation, tapping into new market opportunities, customer trends, a robust digital marketing focus and increasing guest loyalty. In the years leading up to the global pandemic, Lutoff-Perlo led Celebrity Cruises to historic financial performance. She then led the industry back into service on June 26, 2021, when Celebrity Edge was the first ship to sail from a U.S. port and went on to return the brand's business performance to historical ranges in the first full year post-pandemic. In 2023, Celebrity Cruises' ships were the first in the world to earn the coveted star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, further solidifying the brand's relaxed luxury resorts at sea brand positioning. A purpose-driven leader, Lutoff-Perlo also catalyzed cultural progress in the 200-year-old cruise industry by appointing the first American female Captain and the first West-African woman to work on the bridge of a cruise ship; making history with the first all-female bridge and leadership sailing in 2020; and, ultimately, increasing Celebrity's percentage of women on the bridge to 32%, far exceeding the maritime industry average of 2%. She has been recognized with numerous awards for business transformation, outstanding leadership, diversity and inclusion, and her numerous philanthropic efforts., and is a member of the Board of Directors of Fortune 500 company AutoNation (NYSE: AN) actively lending her expertise to numerous nonprofit boards. Lutoff-Perlo shares her powerful career stories and lessons learned in her leadership book, “Making Waves: A Woman's Rise to the Top Using Smarts, Heart and Courage,” available in February 2024. Barbara shares her illustrious career journey, from her early exposure to different cultures and languages to her various roles in the travel and luxury industries. She discusses the importance of sisterhood and supporting women in business, as well as the power of being true to oneself. Barbara also highlights the unique aspects of Silversea Cruises, including their focus on luxury experiences in remote destinations and their commitment to sustainability, sharing insights into the company's newest ship, Silver Nova, and the combination of Silversea's heritage with the resources and support of Royal Caribbean Group KEY TAKEAWAYS The company places a strong emphasis on its crew, considering them to be its biggest asset. The crew's empathy and training are key in delivering exceptional service and anticipating guests' needs. Silversea's acquisition by Royal Caribbean Group has provided the brand with the necessary resources and support to grow and innovate while maintaining its distinct identity. Silversea's newest ship, Silver Nova, showcases the combination of Silversea's heritage and Royal Caribbean's engineering capabilities. It features an asymmetrical design, allowing for more glass and natural light, as well as an open pool deck that offers unobstructed views of the destination. The company is committed to sustainability and has built Silver Nova to be the most sustainable ship in its class, reducing greenhouse emissions by 40% compared to previous ships. The partnership with Royal Caribbean Group has enabled Silversea to invest in sustainable practices and technologies. BEST MOMENTS "Success is a very dangerous teacher, because the day we believe we got it all, that's when, first of all, I think we stop enjoying because part of working for me is also learning new things every day." "I always consider my biggest strength the fact that I was born blonde with blue eyes, because many stupid men, they think you're stupid. And so they treat you like a blonde." "The strength about an asymmetric ship is really the consumer benefits that come out of it. So the whole structure of the ship is inside, which allows the whole ship to be built in glass. So the first thing, which is difficult to explain on a podcast, but this is really the ship of light." "So sometimes, as much as we were talking before about just open yourself to the universe and be out there, but also, don't be afraid of saying no if it doesn't feel right, because it's much harder to say no than yes."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Last year my husband started working for Cunard and so we are really new to cruising but want to make the most of his staff discount. We have a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords booked for July 2023, 7 nights out of Southampton on Queen Victoria. So far the only excursion we've booked is a visit to Briksdal Glacier. We have done lots of research and feel happy with this as the only pre-booked cruise line excursion. The other port days we are happy to just wander nearby to the ship and see where we end up. My question is, do you feel that you can get the best out of port days just going with the flow or do you prefer pre-booked and organised trips? Sitting on a coach with 60 other people looking at passing views is my idea of hell, I'd much rather put on some hiking boots and walk to a waterfall. Love the show, especially Chris's Cunard insights, hope to catch an enrichment talk one day!Baz suggests look at the independant shore excursions operators such as Venture Ashore: https://www.ventureashore.com/Listener Question from KeithWhile cruising recently on Holland America's Nieuw Statendam, I noticed an interesting shape on the rear of the hull below deck 1.  What is the purpose of the extended structure at the rear of the ship beneath the mooring lines?  When viewed from the rear or side, most of the “extension” is above the water.BazCruise NewsViking Opens up 2025 River Cruises for sale Due to overwhelming demand, Viking's 2025 river voyages are now open for sale.  This response comes as Viking celebrated record-breaking sales in January and earning top honours in the Cruise Critic 2023 Cruisers' Choice Awards across river, ocean and expedition categories. It is the first time Viking has three river seasons open for sale at once, providing guests with more choice when selecting their next unforgettable journey.Viking started the year with record-breaking sales in January and this demand has only continued throughout the following months. Green Eggs were enjoyed, and the kids had a ball, but their mums and their dads had the best time of all. There was singing and dancing, by crew and by waiters, but the kids were by far the best fun creators.Carnival Cruise Line has been a proud supporter of the Children's Hospital Foundation in Queensland since 2019 and has hosted its recurring Conga for Kids event onboard Carnival Luminosa since the ship began sailing from Queensland in November 2022.Raising much-needed funds for the Foundation, Carnival Cruise Line VP, Kara Glamore also presented Children's Hospital Foundation CEO, Lyndsey Rice with a giant cheque for $34,245. The money raised is the cumulative efforts of the brand's ‘Conga for Kids' events during Carnival's first-ever Brisbane season. And with two events to go, this number is only expected to increase. This figure adds to a previous donation of $10,000 following the 2022 Nine Telethon in support of the foundation, bringing the total funds raised to just under 45 thousand dollars.Deck' the halls! The ship continues the innovation that debuted with the Edge Series but will also be equipped with a new engine model, along with storage and delivery systems, that will give unmatched fuel flexibility, with the ability to use three types of fuel, including methanol. To allow for the ship's fuel flexibility, Wärtsilä will deliver two converted 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 46F engines to allow them to utilize three fuel sources, including methanol. These changes not only advance carbon-free cruising, but by adding methanol as a fuel option, local emission like sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter are significantly reduced.Formula 1 Races in Abu Dhabi + Monaco Can Be Accessed Via a Cruise Ship So Small & Nimble It Feels Like Your Own Private YachtSmall ship line Windstar Cruises has added a new Formula 1 experience for its guests, this time at the final race of the 2023 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. We occasionally talk about a sea-change within the cruise industry but this time we mean it. In the past two years, three of the four cruise companies have turned over their top jobs. Royal Caribbean Group chairman and CEO Richard Fain stepped down as CEO as of January 2022, after serving in that role since the late 1980s. He was replaced by Jason Liberty, the company's CFO. In mid-2022, Carnival Corp. chairman and CEO Arnold Donald announced that he would step down, to be replaced by Josh Weinstein, the company's chief operating officer. And just last month, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings chairman and CEO Frank Del Rio said he would step down this summer and that Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Harry Sommer would step up into the "sea-suite." (We should note that, as of now, the fourth company, MSC Cruises, is still helmed by Pierfrancesco Vago.) Cruise editor Andrea Zelinski looks at the changing of the guard in this week's Focus on Cruise cover story. And on this episode, with Signature Travel Group CEO Alex Sharpe, we explore the changeover a little more and get of the sense of the people behind and ahead of the industry's trajectory.
