Field Training in the High Uintas: Exposing Boys to Hardship, Discomfort, & Hard Skills

Send us a text! It used to be that went sent our boys into groups like the Boy Scouts of America to train for manhood. But as those organizations have drifted left, we lack male spaces for discipleship and formation for young men. At St. Brendan's Academy and Refuge Church, we're trying to forge a new path forward. Recently, pastor Ethan Senn and Tate Taylor took some of the young men from Refuge Church on a field training exercise in the high Uintas of Utah. During their time in the mountains, the boys learned land navigation, fire building, firearms handling, and various other survival skills. It's all part of the Titus 2 program, which aims to train boys in hard skills and mental fortitude in preparation for manhood. 2025 New Christendom Press Conference: https://www.newchristendompress.com/2025Sign up for the NCP Games:https://beregenerated.com/games/Fuel your training with Mt. It's been a busy, active week in the backcountry and episodes like this are quickly becoming my favorite to record and produce.  There's a lot to talk about. We'll start today's show like usual by discussing the snow, weather, and avalanche conditions. Our house of cards is crumbling more and more everyday and this weekend has natural avalanche cycle written all over it. There have already been 40 backcountry avalanches reported to the UAC and I'm sure more and more observations will come in this weekend. Tune in to hear the complete story about what's going on in the backcountry. Are you inta' the Uintas? In Part 2, we'll chat with local guide, educator, and avalanche forecaster Joey Manship about accessing this mountain range. He'll give us information about the weather and backcountry conditions to this seemingly elusive area. We'll close the episode by summarizing our weather forecast for the next week. We're measuring snow in feet. Not inches. Thanks for your support! Keep sharing the SLSC with your ski community and let me know what you think.

Welcome to Episode 28 of the This Was an Assignment Podcast. For this week’s episode we mixed things up a bit! I had the opportunity (I use that word loosely) to go on a 4 day backpacking/survival trip with my dad, Chad Woolley, and my brother-in-law, Trent Park. We decided to test our grit against the sometimes very unforgiving Uinta mountains. We met at Christmas Meadows Wednesday evening, where we dropped off a truck. Then our driver, JP, took us to the Highline Trailhead. It was there that our adventure began. We hiked from there to Jordan Lake, stayed a night, and then did some “Back Country Chaddin” and hiked towards Rocky Sea Pass. Once over the pass, we hiked to Black Lake, where we caught some fish and enjoyed a night. Saturday morning, we woke up, caught more fish, then hiked to Lightning Lake. It was there that we had lunch, and sized up the hardest part of the weekend: “Bad Ass Pass”. After a good 3 hours, we finally made it over the pass into Amethyst Basin, and stayed our last night. After that, we woke up and hiked another 6ish miles out, to Christmas Meadows, where our trusty truck awaited our arrival. It was an incredible journey. Throughout the journey we recorded snippets for the podcast, telling what we did and how it went. I hope you enjoy!
