Theatre director Robert Icke's production of Oedipus won best revival and a best actress award for Lesley Manville at last night's Olivier Awards - but his new play Manhunt is now demanding his attention at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The drama focuses on the story of Raoul Moat who attacked his ex-girlfriend and killed her new boyfriend before a stand-off with armed police which ended in his suicide. Samira talks to Robert Icke and to Samuel Edward-Cook who plays Moat. The Edwardian era - from Queen Victoria's death to the start of the First World War - is the subject of a new exhibition at the King's Gallery in London. Samira is joined by its curator Kathryn Jones from the Royal Collection Trust and by the historian and Alwyn Turner, author of Little Englanders: Britain in the Edwardian Era.The Swinging Sixties bring to mind films like Michael Caine's Alfie and the social realist dramas like Up The Junction. But A Touch of Love, released in 1969 and now getting a fresh outing on DVD, offers up an unusual female perspective on the era of free love. Margaret Drabble adapted her own novel the Millstone for the film which starred Sandy Dennis - alongside a young Ian McKellen in his first screen role. We hear from its director Waris Hussein - who also directed the first episodes of Dr Who.
It's a big day for Rosebud, as it's our 50th episode. No, we can't quite believe it either! We started Rosebud in September 2023 with Dame Judi Dench, and so we wanted to bring you another theatrical dame for our 50th show. And so it's with pride that we give you one of our greatest actresses, and an old friend of Gyles's, Dame Maureen Lipman. Maureen tells Gyles about her childhood, growing up in a close Jewish family in Hull. Maureen's mother used to encourage her to perform for her friends when they came over for drinks, and Maureen's gift for making people laugh was born. Maureen and Gyles talk about her drama school days, and the early part of her career, with Laurence Olivier at The National Theatre, at the RSC, and in film, in Up The Junction. They talk about the start of her relationship with Jack Rosenthal, whom she eventually married, and about what happened when Hugh Jackman announced, on stage, that he was too sick to do a Saturday matinee of Oklahoma. This episode is full of funny stories, revelations, and impressions. We recorded this live at The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, South-West London. At the end of the show there's a special treat, which is a remix of the legendary Rosebud themetune. Enjoy this. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Renowned for the autobiographical candour of her lyrics, Lily Allen has sung about the pitfalls of fame, drugs, broken relationships and motherhood. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for her debut album Alright Still and after the release of It's Not Me, It's You in 2010 won a Brit Award and three Ivor Novello Awards, including Songwriter of the Year. In 2021 she embarked on a stage acting career starring in 2.22 A Ghost Story, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. More recently, with her childhood friend Miquita Oliver, she launched her BBC podcast series Miss Me.Talking to John Wilson, Lily recalls a sometimes sad and troubled childhood. Her father, the actor and comedian Keith Allen, had left the family home when she was four, and her film producer mother Alison Owen was often away working. She chooses as her first formative experiences a school concert in which she performed the song Baby Mine from the Disney movie Dumbo and captivated the audience. She recalls how the first started writing and recording her own songs, and built up a fanbase with the on-line platform MySpace. She chooses, as key musical influences the 1979 song Up The Junction by Squeeze, and the 2004 album A Grand Don't Come For Free by Mike Skinner, otherwise known as The Streets. Lily Allen also reflects on the pressures of juggling life in the spotlight with motherhood, and how theatre acting has offered her a new creative challenge.Producer: Edwina Pitman

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Squeeze is one of the most enduring bands of the 80s with timeless songs like “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Tempted,” “Cool for Cats,” “Up The Junction,” and so many others – all that still sound fresh today. In a little bit of a departure from other episodes, this one is structed more like an oral history of the band with Squeeze's singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Difford, drummer Gilson Lavis, and bassist John Bentley. Plus John Faye from the 90s band The Caulfields. Musical credits: Calmion: Calmion by Blue Dot Sessions Theme song from Audiojungle. Cleo Sylvestre (1945-) is a woman of many firsts: she is the first Black woman to play a leading role at the National Theatre in London, one of the first Black actors to have a recurring role in a primetime British soap and one of the first Black Brits to release a single in 1964 – with none other than her friends, The Rolling Stones. The Guardian called her “the Black actor who should have been one of Britain's biggest stars”. So why isn't she a household name? Sylvestre was born in Euston, London, and attended Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts before launching into a life on stage and screen: she made her West End debut in 1964 alongside British acting legend Alec Guinness and went on to star in some of the definitive shows of the Sixties, those that put working class actors on TV for the first time, including visionary director Ken Loach's Up The Junction, Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow, as well as Doctor Who, Coronation Street and Crossroads. Like Dana Gillespie, who is also featured this season, Cleo hung out at the Marquee Club in Soho, which is where she met the Rolling Stones, who invited her to record the 1964 single, To Know Him Is To Love Him, while rock'and'roll royalty like Jimmy Page and the Hollies would often come for one of her mother's home cooked meals. It wasn't easy being one of the few Black women breaking through in the entertainment industry, as she explains, discussing race, resilience, rejection and wanting to pave the way for working class actors, as well as how she's returned to singing after 50 years with her blues alter ego, Honey B Mama. It's interesting to compare Cleo's and Dana's stories – they moved through the Swinging Sixties differently but have both ended up performing the blues later in life. And they didn't meet each other till later in life, either! If you liked this, listen to our PP Arnold episode, another singer who Mick Jagger was quite taken with early on… And you can catch Honey B Mama and her band playing at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, where Cleo served as co-director for 20 years. This episode was produced by Antonia Odunlami, and presented and exec-produced by Kate Hutchinson, with sound design by Hana Walker-Brown. Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London's best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats', ‘Up The Junction', ‘Labelled With Love', ‘Hourglass' and ‘Tempted'. Despite the fact that Chris has helped soundtrack so many fans' lives since his first release in 1977, the passion for innovation and love of playing still drives him to carry on writing rather than sit back and admire his handywork. Chris recently celebrated his 60th birthday and for 41 of those years he has been writing with Glenn Tilbrook, very much the Odd Couple. When Squeeze take a break from the road, Glenn and Chris have been touring their ‘At Odds Couple Tour'. An absolute joy and privilege to interview legendary singer/songwriter Chris Difford from Squeeze. A really interesting discussion on matters of music and faith and much more. I do hope you enjoy this conversation with Chris.

Chris Difford is a lyricist and co-founding member of 70's & 80's new wave pop band Squeeze. With classic hits such as Tempted, Up The Junction, Labelled With Love & Cool For Cats, his contribution to the British music scene has been considerable and long lasting. In this conversation Chris talks with power and candour about the challenges he has endured and survived including addictions and chronic dyslexia which impacted his childhood deeply.Despite being hindered by a stammer and labelled as ‘backward' by an unsympathetic school system, Chris was determined to follow his dream to join a band and become a songwriter. Squeeze went on, of course, to have huge commercial success both here and in the US.But as the tours stacked up, Chris had clearly started self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, retreating slowly as he says to a ‘very dark place'. His chronic fear of flying and months spent on the road away from his young family began to take their toll and it was only with the intervention of a friend which made him see he had a serious problem, taking him to a treatment centre and helping him on his road to recovery. This week Chris celebrated 29 years of sobriety and continues to ‘pay it back' in-between touring by holding song-writing workshops in prisons and raising money for food banks and NHS nurses. As Squeeze prepare to be one of the first bands to cross the Atlantic following lockdown restrictions, touring on both sides of the States with Hall & Oates before returning to the UK to tour with Madness, Chris shares his simple approach to keeping life within the four walls of his day. An impactful and heart-warming first Shortcuts episode.Chris' Crisis Cures: 1. AA/NA Meetings – Listen to what's going on. Buddy up with somebody – somebody will always be there to hold your hand and make you a cup of tea. You'll never forget the taste of that cup of tea if you get the message.2. Adopt a piece of music – Have it around you at all times. For me that's James Taylor “You've Got a Friend.” I've always loved it. There's something very moving about the chords and the words. They can lift you out of a dark place.3. Keeping things simple – Don't live in the past. You can't regret what you did yesterday because it's gone, and you can't know what's coming in the future. We all like to live in the future but it's quite dangerous. Living within the four walls of a day is the simplest thing to do. The routine of a day is extremely important.Links:–https://www.amazon.co.uk/Some-Fantastic-Place-Life-Squeeze/dp/1474605672 –https://www.madness.co.uk/2021/05/15/madness-special-guests-squeeze-the-ladykillers-tour-2021/–https://chrisdifford.com/–https://www.actiononaddiction.org.uk/Stream/Buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk

In this episode we listen to the worlds finest proponents of 3 minute kitchen sink drama - Squeeze. Will it be Up The Junction all will it be All's Well? This episode is being released on Mothering Sunday, 2021 so the song Woman's World feels especially apposite. Along the way Neil rambles about the time he saw Squeeze live twice in a month in the late 90's and Joel goes off on the weirdest explanation of how he dislikes songs that are played higher up the keyboard with the right hand (?!?). Honestly - it's really bizarre. This is a mixed bag of hit singles and deep cuts from albums and B-sides. Not all land well with Joel. Joel gets his revenge as usual (word to the wise the sound on it is horrid!) and it's a doozy! Check out our youtube channels: Pockenrop and Foxeatingnuggets. Pockenrop is posting weekly with music based stuff.
Chris Difford is half of one of British pop's most enduring - and endearing - songwriting double acts. Along with Glenn Tilbrook, Chris has formed the backbone of Squeeze for almost a half a century. He wrote the lyrics for classic hits like Cool for Cats, Up The Junction, and Tempted and continues to perform and record in Squeeze. He tells Jim Drury about his 43 years in the music business. The boys are back to discuss the big Thursday night clash Adelaide Crows v Geelong Cats. The game didn't fill us with great hope and the boys rake over the coals in this podcast....trying to find answers.
British TV and film producer Tony Garnett is in conversation with Matthew Sweet about a career which straddles the Wednesday Play and the many films he worked on with Ken Loach for the BBC in the 1960s, including Up The Junction and Cathy Come Home through the late 1990s series This Life to Between the Lines and a forthcoming drama about police infiltration of British activist groups. Tony Garnett's memoir is called The Day The Music Died. Producer: Fiona McLean
For the first time ever, this episode is going straight from the disk to the world: no corrective editing. This means you'll hear all the "ums", "uhs", coughs (or worse) and verbal missteps made by the both of us.
