Jeff Grubb is joined by Rhys Elliot to recap everything that happened during today's Nintendo Direct like Metroid Prime 4 and a new Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Nightdive Studios hoping to bring back "No One Lives Forever", layoffs at Crystal Dynamics, and so much more for your Thursday!
This week Nathan and Gita accidentally burst the dam on another wellspring of Riley Lore – perhaps the wildest yet – before we all move on to a discussion of more sobering matters: WB recently closed three video game studios, including Monolith, the makers of quietly revolutionary games like No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., and Shadow of Mordor, as well as the upcoming (now-canceled) Wonder Woman game. WB, of course, has proven especially eager to dumpster promising projects beyond the world of games in recent years, but what portion of this sickness is specific to the company and where does it overlap with the gaming industry's own mismanagement epidemic? Then we talk about Jeff Bezos' mask-off decision to transform The Washington Post into the propaganda arm of his already-unimaginably-profitable business empire, the latest in a line of tech billionaires bending the knee to tired old king Donald Trump and cackling vizier Elon Musk. Speaking of workplaces that suck, we also discuss Severance, a show that definitely does not suck. It has the trappings of a mystery box, but so far, it has successfully maintained a focus on characters above all else. Fantastic! Keep it up! Please do not become another Lost or Westworld! Finally, we suggest games that would be improved by the addition of a Nemesis System (basically all of them; fuck WB for patenting it). Credits - Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Gita Jackson, & Riley MacLeod - Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude - Subscribe to Aftermath! About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Each week, games journalism veterans Luke Plunkett, Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Riley MacLeod, and Gita Jackson – though not always all at once, because that's too many people for a podcast – break down video game news, Remember Some Games, and learn about Chris' frankly incredible number of special interests. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. Simply by reading this description, you're already wasting time that you could be spending listening to the show. Head to aftermath.site for more info.

It was Christmas morning for Alex this week. Tim Schafer showed up at his house, ate all the cookies, drank all the beer, and left behind Psychonauts 2. On the other extreme, Chamberlain played a depressing metroidvania, a pretentious 2D physics-based platformer and them ran back to an ex for comfort, the ex being the only Assassin's Creed game he didn't finish, Valhalla. Chance watched No One Lives, which is not a prequal to No One Lives Forever (who own that game's rights, anyway?) and then settled in to the Ghost of Tsushima expansion. In case you were worried, it is more Ghost of Tsushima.

IO Interactive: nobody does it better? James Bond is the theme of this week's episode, as we discuss the Hitman developer's recently announced 007 game, and what it might look like. We also delve into the history of Bond on consoles and PC. Predictably, GoldenEye 007 comes up, but so too do the deeply average PS2-era likes of 007 Nightfire and Everything or Nothing. Plus! Jokes about George Lazenby. This week's music is from the GoldenEye 007 soundtrack by Graeme Norgate, Grant Kirkhope and Robin Beanland, as well as the No One Lives Forever soundtrack by Guy Whitman.
On this month's Dispatch episode, we talk about Spoilers. Why don't they bother us? What benefit scan strategically spoiling things for yourself bring? What's a sensible spoiler policy for podcasts like ours? We also answer your questions, read your responses to No One Lives Forever, Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons, and Marathon 2: Durandal.
Cate Archer is the grooviest spy that ever was, and she's on a mission to save the world from H.A.R.M. and their burping biological billionaire bombs. This cinematic first person shooter was ahead of its time, with snappy writing, intricate levels, and satisfying shooting. The only thing getting in the way is bad, punishing stealth. But for a game released in 2000, this is really impressive and worth checking out.
Features selections from their 1996 release “Farewell: Live From The Universal Amphitheatre” includes No One Lives Forever, Cinderella Undercover, Reptiles and Suamrai, Water, We Close Our Eyes, I’m So Bad, Stay, Whole Day Off, Grey Matter, On The Outside, Sex (In The Working Class), Dead Mans Party.

First released in the year 2000 for windows, The Operative: No One Lives Forever (NOLF) was widely praised as the best FPS released since Half Life. The game openly celebrates the Spy genre, feeling like a bizarre amalgamation of James Bond, Get Smart and Austin Powers. Monolith Productions was struggling with giving the game a unique identity until they struck on the idea of making the lead character a woman. Enter Cate Archer, dryly sarcastic, witty and deadly, but surrounded by the blatant sexism of the 60s, with everyone questioning her abilities and blaming her emotions whenever things go wrong.Cate Archer tackles the obstacles in front of her with aplomb, sneaking around enemy bases and shooting anyone who happens to stop her. But can the gameplay of this mostly forgotten relic hold up all these years later? Is the story really that fascinating or just a glorified homage? On this episode we discuss:Can you have a story that features both ridiculous satire and a serious threat to the world? How does NOLF balance these two seemingly opposed tones?Do you need to have a wide variety of tools at your disposal to make stealth gameplay engaging? Or is a silenced gun all you need if the other elements work? Will we ever get tired of pressing hidden switches to unveil secret passages and world domination maps?We answer these questions and many more on the 43rd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!---Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherNOLF OST: Guy Whitmore---To play NOLF on a modern PC, completely free:First, download NOLF GOTY edition at this link. Remember to activate the included widescreen fix. Then, download and install the NOLF Moderniser patch at this link! Enjoy your varied menu options and 60 FPS!---Are there any hilarious conversations between guards that we missed? Is this a better stealth game than we give it credit for? Doe NOLF 2 do the original proud? Let us know what you think on our text based community discord server!

We're talking about remakes, remasters and recurrent nightmares. What would we like to see remade? Katharine wouldn’t mind a spruced up Deus Ex. Brendan thinks a rejigged Assassin’s Creed could work (how perverse). While Adam doesn’t want any of his loves remade, lest they pollute his fond memories (OK, maybe Pathologic 2). However, the real question is what games from today will be remade in the distant future?

They said it wouldn't happen, that it was an integral part of the system and that they would never entertain the idea of selling the Xbox One without the Kinect Sensor/Camera thingie, but this all came from Microsoft, who have now 180'd on almost every part of the controversial strategy they laid out when the Xbox One was first announced. On the subject of announcements, we have the latest Call of Duty (surprise!) a new Unreal Tournament and even the possible return of Super-sexy-spy, Cate Archer in No One Lives Forever (the originals that is, not a new game, sadly). In an interesting turn of events Eric Lee Lewis sits down with Craig Hubbard of Blackpowder Games to speak about his time working on F.E.A.R., the legendary Blood, No One Lives Forever, and Betrayer. These two guys speak about how Betrayer moved from being a colorful game to being a first-person shooter with a black and white color palette. They also speak about the evolution of Kickstarter, as well as other topics like how money and time restraints left them making a more minimalist first-person game. It's a very interesting interview, and one that any game developer can learn from.
Steve visited Seattle to talk with one of the creative minds behind the classic series No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., and now co-founder of Blackpowder games. Hear white-knuckle tales of checking in code for a new weapon on ship day and other wild west reminiscences from one of game development's veteran creators.
While certainly younger than some other studios we focus on, the variety of games that Monolith Productions have put out over the 19 years they've been around is worthy of mention. This week on Discussing Old Stuff, we talk about Blood, Captain Claw, F.E.A.R., TRON 2.0, Condemened, No One Lives Forever and more. Enjoy!
At the suggestion of a listener, Andrew Grech, Nick and I decided to revisit (for the first time for both of us) the cult classic FPS, No One Lives Forever. The game has a great reputation for its clever parody of spy thrillers and for its forward thinking game design. We decided to put that reputation to the test and see if No One Lives Forever has anything to offer gamers over a decade after its initial release.
