Pat Arnold (born Patrica Ann Cole in 1946 in Los Angeles), professionally known as P.P. Arnold, is a soul singer who enjoyed considerable success in the United Kingdom in the 60s and beyond. Born into a family of gospel singers, PP married early, had two children, worked a series of menial jobs until the early 60s, when her friends contacted her with an offer she couldn't refuse. The girls had managed to arrange an audition for them to replace the original Ikettes, the vocal and dancer/singer troupe behind the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. One of the girls didn't show up and PP was asked to fill in. The three girls were offered the job on the spot. PP defied her husband, placed her children in the care of her parents and joined Ike & Tina Turner. She came to England in 1966 on tour in support of The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger was impressed by her soulful voice and convinced Stones manager Andrew Oldham to sign PP to record with his newly founded record label. PP quit the Turner band to establish a solo career. She also had a fling with Jagger. PP enjoyed several major British hits, including songs written for her by Steve Marriott of The Small Faces. She also sung backing vocals on the their hit "Tin Soldier" and toured with them in 68. PP toured with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Kinks, Blind Faith, David Bowie and others, and scored several hits including a cover version of "The First Cut Is the Deepest" and "Angel of the Morning". After the collapse of record label in the late 60s, PP released two singles produced by Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees, but a planned album with Gibb was never completed. In 1970 she moved to the musical stage, and contributed session musician backing vocals to many notable UK sessions. During these sessions she met bassist Fuzzy Samuels of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. They married and had a son. The couple returned to Los Angeles. PP''s marriage to Samuels ended and two weeks after the split, her daughter Debbie was killed in a car accident. She withdrew from public life, re-emerging in 1978 when she was reunited with Barry Gibb and teamed up with Andy Gibb for a duet recording of the Carole King song "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow". She returned to England in 1982 to raise her son there. In 1984 she joined the cast of the musical Starlight Express. She appeared on Roger Waters' album in 1992, providing vocals on the song "Perfect Sense". In 1994 she joined the cast of the award-winning musical Once On This Island. While the production was playing in Birmingham she met leading UK band Ocean Colour Scene, one of the new wave of latter-day mod groups who (like their mentor Paul Weller), idolised The Small Faces. Her friendship with OCS led to her singing the lead vocal, backed by Primal Scream, on a cover of The Small Faces' "Understanding", which was included on a successful Small Faces tribute album. She also worked extensively with Ocean Colour Scene on their 1997 album. This success led to plans for her to record her first solo album in decades, but once again it was not completed. Deciding to put together a new band to promote her material, Arnold joined forces with Chaz Jankel, former pianist with Ian Dury and The Blockheads. This was followed by an invitation to tour widely with Roger Waters. She was a backup vocalist on his 1999–2000 tour as well as the 2006–2008 tour, Dark Side of the Moon Live. In mid 2007 she released her first recorded work for several years. The album is a duet with The Blow Monkeys frontman Dr. Robert and has been met with critical acclaim, as have their live performances at several venues.
You may not know her name, but I guarantee you've heard her voice. When acts as diverse as Graham Nash, Peter Gabriel and KLF are in need of a soulful vocal, PP Arnold has been a top choice. Her voice has graced dozens of songs & albums for over 50 years, though she's never had a hit under her own name in the US. On this episode, we take a brief look at her career and examine a great lost track, featuring Eric Clapton and the Derek & The Dominos band, recorded in 1970 but didn't see the light of day until 47 years later. The godfather of British independent labels, Immediate, was started in 1965 by the Stones' manager Andrew Oldham and Tony Calder, its winning slogan: “happy to be part of the industry of human happiness”. As Simon Spence correctly puts it, “it all got very messy”. Oldham tended to fall out with people and then threaten to kill them. Simon's excellent book, ‘Immediate: the Rise And Fall of the UK's First Independent Record Label' has the details (he also co-authored Oldham's two memoirs, ‘Stoned' and ‘2Stoned'). Immediate has been a touchstone ever since and their roster included the Small Faces, PP Arnold, the Nice, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, Twinkle, Scott Walker and various others discussed here. Also includes … … “no Andrew Oldham, no Rolling Stones.” … the part played by Tony Hancock's doctor. … “if you didn't want to be ripped off, why are you in the music business?” … the range of Immediate's catalogue from Nico and Rod Stewart to the Turtles and Jimmy Tarbuck. … an advert for the Nice involving three assassinated politicians. … the time Oldham left his hairdresser in charge of A&R. … Don Arden, the Small Faces and £25,000 in a paper bag. … a secretly recorded blues album and why Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page fell out. … why Oldham wanted to poison the Nice and murder Amen Corner. … invaluable advice from Phil Spector. … and why Immediate finally fell apart. Sadly, it doesn't stream, and I don't know if it's available anywhere, but the whole thing is ripped to YouTube. So check it out. 10. 11. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ COLIN HUDD # 089 - PART 2 Ever since dance music first swelled up in the UK, Colin Hudd has been riding the crest of the waves. Beginning his monumental journey, with humble beginnings working as a mobile DJ from 1971 to 1976, This laid the foundations of his DJ career today. Colin began a residency in 1976 at ‘The Monica' on Canvey Island, a year later gaining another residency at ‘Wings', Gravesend End. After passing an audition, Colin moved from ‘Monica' to ‘Goldmine', a residency he kept until 1981. In those days Colin had already established a respected reputation among the soul and funk clubs of the time. He had been a regular at Canvey's legendary ‘Goldmine' and was still on a high from winning the ‘Blues & Soul Club' DJ award. His profile gained momentum enough for him to be noticed and given his now legendary run at ‘Flicks' which ran from 1978 through to 1987. But, from as early as 1986, when the rest of the world was still listening to soul and the new romantics, Colin had already started leaning towards an entirely new genre of dance music. Little did he know that the music he had recognised as something more than a ‘fad' would become the global phenomenon it is still today; House Music. Colin has always been ahead of his time. From when he discovered house music in 1986 when he was advised to leave this new ‘noise' alone and stick to the soul that had worked so well for him, but, going with his instincts; he found himself pioneering a dance revolution. His technical ability and creative foresight enabled him to go on to headline landmark clubs such as Heaven, Legends, Ministry of Sound, World Dance, Pure Sex, and Spectrum/Land of Oz. Even bigger events were round the corner. His residency at Spectrum found him working alongside Paul Oakenfold a man he remains good friends with today. By that time house music had begun to take hold and Colin and Paul found themselves playing to packed dance floors night after night, Leading to Colin and Paul supporting U2 on their Zooropa tour. It was inevitable that Colin would turn to producing his own music. He worked as the Manic MCs and Audio Deluxe, whilst remixing PP Arnold, Billy Idol and a host of other well-respected artists.

The American soul singer PP Arnold started out singing gospel at church and found fame in the 1960s as an Ikette with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. She moved to London for a solo career, supporting the Rolling Stones and enjoying success with hits such as The First Cut is the Deepest and Angel of the Morning. In a career spanning more than 50 years, she has worked with artists from Eric Clapton and The Small Faces to Barry Gibb, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and Primal Scream. She has appeared in musicals including Starlight Express, and most recently has performed solo at Glastonbury. She has now written her story in Soul Survivor, and she joins Emma to discuss her life and music A group of Labour Party MPs and Peers is challenging the party's decision to turn down an application by Labour Women's Declaration to have a stall at this year's Conference in Liverpool in September. Known as LWD, they describe themselves on their website as “a movement to raise the profile of women's sex-based rights within the Labour Party and the wider socialist movement.” We speak to one of those challenging the decision, Baroness Dianne Hayter - who is a former Chair of the Labour Party's ruling body, the NEC. Maria Klandorf is one of a thousand women in Estonia who have joined the Women's Defence Organisation. The women, who range from school teachers to architects, are all receiving training in the Estonian Defence League. They say they're preparing for any future potential invasion by Russia. Today is the first day of the European Women's Football Championships and tonight's first England game against Austria at Old Trafford is sold out. After getting to the semi-finals three consecutive times at major tournaments, can the Lionesses harness the tactical experience of their relatively new manager Sarina Wiegman and the love of the roaring home crowds to get to the Final this time? We hear from Lioness and midfielder Ella Toone on her thoughts for the team and the championship. And Emma is joined live by Gabby Logan, the BBC's Women's Euros lead presenter and ex-Lioness, Fara Williams, England's most-capped player and a BBC Women's Euros pundit.

Cat Stevens said that this is the definitive version of the song that's been a hit for Rod Stewart and Sheryk Crow, and he should know -- he wrote it. In it, you hear not just an indelible vocal performance, but the woman who PP left an abusive marriage and the United States to chart her own path. Cleo Sylvestre (1945-) is a woman of many firsts: she is the first Black woman to play a leading role at the National Theatre in London, one of the first Black actors to have a recurring role in a primetime British soap and one of the first Black Brits to release a single in 1964 – with none other than her friends, The Rolling Stones. The Guardian called her “the Black actor who should have been one of Britain's biggest stars”. So why isn't she a household name? Sylvestre was born in Euston, London, and attended Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts before launching into a life on stage and screen: she made her West End debut in 1964 alongside British acting legend Alec Guinness and went on to star in some of the definitive shows of the Sixties, those that put working class actors on TV for the first time, including visionary director Ken Loach's Up The Junction, Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow, as well as Doctor Who, Coronation Street and Crossroads. Like Dana Gillespie, who is also featured this season, Cleo hung out at the Marquee Club in Soho, which is where she met the Rolling Stones, who invited her to record the 1964 single, To Know Him Is To Love Him, while rock'and'roll royalty like Jimmy Page and the Hollies would often come for one of her mother's home cooked meals. It wasn't easy being one of the few Black women breaking through in the entertainment industry, as she explains, discussing race, resilience, rejection and wanting to pave the way for working class actors, as well as how she's returned to singing after 50 years with her blues alter ego, Honey B Mama. It's interesting to compare Cleo's and Dana's stories – they moved through the Swinging Sixties differently but have both ended up performing the blues later in life. And they didn't meet each other till later in life, either! If you liked this, listen to our PP Arnold episode, another singer who Mick Jagger was quite taken with early on… And you can catch Honey B Mama and her band playing at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, where Cleo served as co-director for 20 years. This episode was produced by Antonia Odunlami, and presented and exec-produced by Kate Hutchinson, with sound design by Hana Walker-Brown. This cut is the deepest and I'm not talking PP Arnold. Guest spot Reggie Parker, a clear expert of the old school animation, brought us Battle of the Planets. This redubbing of the anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was a milestone for the art form in America as one of the first to go mainstream. It had Kaiju, it had mechs, it had Power Ranger type transformations, it had a robot running the show, but this show did it all first. My guest this week is John Partridge, Honorary Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Kent. John came to Canterbury from Bavaria in 1977 where he had taught English. We talk about how we once bumped into each other at a Gerry and the Pacemakers gig and about broaching conversations with idols. John tells us about his PhD on performative verbs and we discuss whether new forms of language have arisen since lockdown, and we learn why John is disinclined to use social media conventions. We discover that John didn’t profit as much as he could have done from living in Liverpool. We find out that he had a happy time growing up in Sutton Coldfield and doing lots of outdoor activities e.g. mountaineering, and John discloses why he is quite a parochial kind of person. We learn that he meets up with friends from sixth form once or twice a year and we talk about how places mean different things to different people. John discusses his experience of seeing The Kinks, The Who and PP Arnold perform at Liverpool Union and about how one’s children tend to do things which we don’t necessarily understand. We learn that John didn’t grow up with a TV or record player, that he was good at languages at school, and originally wanted to be a fighter pilot. He recalls playing snooker on a tiny table and talks about how he doesn’t get politically active. We learn which party he has never voted for and we find out about his views on activism. John reveals how he has had some wonderful experiences which he would hate not to have had and he shares his thoughts on how the university profession is not as rounded as it could be. John tells us about his dilemma around diaries and we learn why in his mind John still considers himself to be 16. Then, at the end of the interview, we find out whether John is a looking back or a looking forward kind of person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and John Partridge and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

We catch up with iconic soul singer, PP Arnold, whose musical journey has been a real emotional rollercoaster: at just 17, she was out on tour with Ike and Tina Turner as one of 'The Ikettes' (Tina helping her out of an abusive marriage in the process), and her success in the UK during the swinging sixties was significant - a great rendition of The First Cut Is The Deepest made the top 20, and she collaborated and toured with an eclectic array of artists: Humble Pie, Dr. John, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Eric Clapton to name but a few. In 2019, she released her first solo album in five decades. We reflect on a career that's brought PP so much success, and continues to flourish.
The legend that is PP Arnold, singer with Ikettes, backing singer for Ike & Tina Turner and supporting The Small Faces and The Rolling Stones amongst many other icons. Rhoda talking about singing the songs of her band the Bodysnatchers and singing with the Special AKA and more!
Long before it was a worldwide hit for Rod Stewart, the Cat Stevens song 'First Cut is the Deepest' made a name for the former Ike and Tina Turner backing singer, PP Arnold. In an interview for Soul Music she describes the emotional connection she felt to the lyrics, having emerged from an abusive marriage shortly before recording it. Also contributing to the programme is the song's original producer, Mike Hurst. He describes how he achieved the huge 'wall of sound' production using double drums, a huge string section, and a harp instead of a guitar to play the signature riff at the the start of the track. There are many personal stories associated with the track: Carsten Knauff recalls a childhood sweetheart - his first true love - and explains why the Cat Stevens' version brings back bitter-sweet memories for him. Rosemarie Purdy saw PP Arnold give an extraordinary live rendition at a club in Portsmouth in 1967. Never before had she seen such a heartfelt, emotionally charged performance. It's something she's never forgotten. The Sheryl Crow version reminds Rachel Batson of a very difficult phase in her life; it's a song she says reflects her own faith journey. And former Radio Caroline DJ, Keith Hampshire, describes the circumstances that led to him having a No.1 hit with the song in Canada. It was the first time 'First Cut' reached No.1 anywhere in the world. Producer: Karen Gregor.
The First Cut is the Deepest. We love PP Arnold. A mix this time starting and finishing with the same track by 2 very different artists.
