Part 2 with keyboard magic-dust provider, ~Andy Richards with more hits, more number ones (including a potential 2 more to make the full 10).And so much brilliant 80s pop…5. GEORGE MICHAELAn opportune meeting, a Sunday afternoon session and more immortality as Andy works with George on the iconic Careless Whisper. A later session with David Cassidy (on yet another top 10 smash) allows him the opportunity to work with George again.6. PET SHOP BOYSA triple whammy of number one singles between July 87 - April 88 as Andy works on It's a Sin, Always on my Mind and Heart (which he also produces). Not forgetting more hits in Suburbia and Rent as well as working on the Actually album.Later he works on the Liza Minelli album, Results (produced by the Pets) ‘resulting' in another top 10 hit in Losing My Mind.Comparisons are made between working with Liza and Dusty Springfield (who he produced on her Reputation album).7. CHRIS DE BURGHFrom the great experience working on the sublime pop of the Pets to the more problematic cheesy monobrow of The De Burgh.Another massive number one single with The Lady In Red (with a little help from George Michael) but at some cost.Despite the experience (and like mothers forgetting the pain of childbirth) Andy returns and works on another top 3 hit in Missing You. Plus discussion at the end on where else George Michael appears in the ARoeuvre.8. PREFAB SPROUTAndy produces the wonderful “Hey Manhattan!” By The Sprouts from their From Langley Park To Memphis album.Discussion on Paddy's views of the track (and why he is wrong, bless the little genius).9. PRODUCINGAs well as being the keyboard maestro go-to guy, Andy also produced many artists in the 80s.Here we go through some of them, from less successful experiences (Berlin) to yet more chart success with Fuzzbox and Holly Johnson. 10. MISCELLANEOUS80s odd and sods including the start of his film/TV work and a chance to mop up any other hits worked on, including a potential 10th number one (Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is being the potential 9th). Brandon and AP Lindsay welcome back one of their favorite guests and DJs, Mr. Jason Berry. The last time Jason was on the show he played sets of Twee and Twee-Adjacent songs that were not available (to the best of his knowledge) on streaming sites like Spitofy or what-have-you) and this time he challenges Brandon to a duel of short songs. Who can play the shortest songs without mis-cueing, in the least amount of time. May the shortest set win! You will hear songs by Fuzzbox, The Judys, The Undertones, Dear Nora, Suburban Lawns, Sour Patch, The Meat Puppets, Toys That Kill, Half Japanese, Go Sailor and many more! Derek Philpott in conversation with David Eastaugh Amazon UK https://a.co/d/5t6o7QM Amazon Worldwide For close to a decade and a half the Philpotts have been getting under the skin of musical artistes. Picking up on glaring errors in their lyrics or sometimes getting completely the wrong end of the stick (perhaps to irritate things a little further) they totally misunderstand the meaning of ‘poetic license'. Hundreds of missives have landed on the real and virtual doormats of musicians, worldwide. In return, these lyrical legends have exercised their right to reply, correcting and sometimes confirming the authors' summation of what went wrong... or right. Keith Levene sadly passed away in his home in Norfolk on 11 November 2022, aged 65. He had been battling liver cancer. He was a hugely influential figure on the early London punk explosion. What set him apart from many of his peers, was in a scene based around a DIY- play three chord ethos, Keith really could play. A gifted guitarist, he liked to experiment and push the envelope. In the summer of 1976, he was a founding member of The Clash. However, shortly after recruiting Joe Strummer, Keith left the band. After the Sex Pistols imploded in 1978, John Lydon asked Keith to join him and Jah Wobble to former Public Image Limited. Keith was in PiL for five years, in which time the band released what is widely regarded as some of the most influential material of the time. Including, Metal Box which is considered by many to be a post punk classic. When I heard of Keith's death, I had a dig into my audio archives and found an in-depth interview with him recorded in 2013. At the time Keith was living in the United States. The recording was broadcast on Fuzzbox my late-night punk & ska show on the sadly missed Pure 107.8FM in Stockport. It's basically the same format as a Fuzzcast episode, a punk rock life story. Keith has a lot to talk about - His fall out with John Lydon, how he persuaded Joe Strummer to join the Clash, Sid Vicious, Bernie Rhodes, Jah Wobble, teaching Viv Albertine to play guitar. It's all here. So hopefully you will enjoy.

The heats continue on the journey to the Greatest Beatles Song of All Time, and head ups - this week's an odd one. We face the choice of elevating You Really Got a Hold on Me, Think for Yourself, Happiness is a Warm Gun or Yer Blues. Yup...
This week Rebekah hears the early pioneers of sampling music and mixing with DJs and Rappers for early hip-hop as well as early house music pioneers and an all female group with one of the few female guitarists
After a brief hiatus - they got caught in a time eddy - Andy and Alex return to tackle Andy's favourite story of all time: Pyramids of Mars. It's a story they first watched at a chimney sweep's house in North Northumberland in the mid-Eighties (the chimney sweep was one of the few villagers with a video player!). Andy feels Pyramids is part of his very being and is regularly reduced to just making noises that express his love for the story while Alex muses that between them they must have watched it over a 100 times! Along the way Andy tells the story of what happened to him in the Tomb of Tuthmosis III, remembers organ music at Manopticon 1994, and details what 'isomorphic controls' refers to in his house. Alex meanwhile is reminded of the work of Sylvain Neuvel, recalls buying canopic jars from China, and explains how she completely identifies with Sutekh's fury while trying to crochet! The pair also share their fear of free-flowing jazz and agree that Horus' puzzles are a bit shit. They also ask whether this adventure should really be called Pyramid of Mars singular. Controversial! Musical stylings are provided by Fuzzbox and Minnie Ripperton. There's an unlikely pairing for you. Until next time...

Trained as an electrical engineer but with a passion for music Mike Piera aka Analog Man is the perfect guide to the extremely dense world of effect pedals. He started by repairing desirable vintage pedals which led him to modifying, reproducing, and eventually manufacturing his own line of Analog Man Pedals. We visited with Mike in early March 2020 for this SLN podcast where we discuss the ever expanding world of effect pedals. His shop-office is a veritable museum of vintage pedals and musical ephemera. It is also the production line for his Analog Man line of pedals. Let’s describe Analog Man pedals as “Bespoke” which means “Made to Measure”. Analog Man doesn’t build them until they are ordered. “Snake Oil” and “B S” are rampant in this corner of the music industry but Mike is a straight shooter who knows his subject and tells it like it is. You’ve been warned his pedals are highly addictive.

In the long hot English summer of 1976, a spark was lit that would change the face of popular music, forever. British punk started as an alternative underground live music scene in sweaty clubs and pubs around London's west end and Camden town. Spearheaded by The Sex Pistols and The Clash and inspired by the New York punk scene, London's pub rock circuit and a learn three chords and do it yourself ethos - that spark became a flame which spread like wildfire all cross the nation. Paul Holloway is a radio presenter who in 2008 I launched a late night show called Fuzzbox on Pure Radio in Stockport playing punk, new wave and ska. Now he is dusting down my little black book of contacts and hoping to catch up once again with some of the musicians who helped to shape the punk rock revolution that changed music forever. He is sharing their stories with you in a series of podcasts. This is Fuzzcast, Punk, New Wave & Ska - It's anarchy in the UK
Welcome to Fuzzcast A podcast which talks to some of the musicians at the centre of the punk, new wave and ska explosion which in the late 1970's and early 1980's changed the face of popular music, forever and for better. This extended teaser includes audio from the Fuzzbox radio show archives including clips with Pauline Black (The Selecter), Jah Wobble (PiL & Invaders of the Heart), Hugh Cornwell (ex-Stranglers), Wilko Johnson (Dr Feelgood, Blockheads, Game of Thrones), Buster Bloodvessel (Bad Manners), John Cooper Clarke, Ranking Roger (The Beat), Jake Burns (Stiff Little Fingers), Sir Horace Gentleman (The Specials), JC Carroll (The Members), Baz Warne (The Stranglers & Toy Dolls), Mike Barson (Madness) and Billy Doherty & Damian O'Neill (The Undertones). In the coming months we hope to catch up with more punks, rude boys and girls who shaped the future of music and share their stories with you.

Ted Chippington special. Chippington started performing in 1981 under the name "Eddie Chippington" before changing to Ted "due to maturity and baldness". He first came to national prominence when a gig he had performed in Birmingham in 1984 supporting the Fall was released by local record label Vindaloo on a 7" EP entitled Non Stop Party Hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s. The EP title refers to his penchant for performing his own versions of classic hits, including on this occasion his rendering of Ottawan's "D.I.S.C.O.". The record was played by John Peel on his BBC Radio Oneprogramme - a rare occurrence for a comedian. In 1986 he released an album, Man in a Suitcase - a collection of live recordings plus some more songs, including his versions of "She Loves You" and Alvin Stardust's "I Feel Like Buddy Holly" - which reached the Top 10 indie album chart. "She Loves You" received wider exposure after Steve Wright repeatedly played it on his Radio 1 show, which in turn led to the track being released as a single by Warner Brothers. It narrowly failed to make the Top 75 but Chippington claims that the deal with Warners' earned him "£1,000 and a nice curry". Despite its failure to crack the charts, "She Loves You" raised Chippington's profile considerably and led to numerous media appearances, including a turn on the BBC's lunchtime magazine show Pebble Mill at One, the latter fulfilling a lifelong ambition. Chippington also fielded interviews with the New Musical Express, Birmingham's BRMB and the colour supplement of the Mail on Sunday. He also performed at the Glastonbury and Readingfestivals. Chippington once again came close to mainstream UK singles chart success with a recording of his theme tune "Rockin' with Rita (Head to Toe)" which he performed with his fellow Vindaloo artists the Nightingales and We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It. A further single followed with his reading of Dion's "The Wanderer", in which the boastfulness of the original lyrics was turned on its head: "I'm not the wanderer, I'm not the wanderer...not too keen on roaming around and around and around".

Oh boy. How long were we out? What month is it? We’re back, yo! Sorry about that. February was crazy… and dark… and cold. We missed you! In this episode we talk about the ethical ramifications of uplifted squirrels, parties in fish cleaning rooms, and OUR ORIGIN STORY. It is about to get romantic y’all. Join us, wont you, for we are coming apart. We’re Scott and Hayley!
The latest episode of the podcast which asks: what’s the difference between a Cartoon Time and a Cartoon Club? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, sees the world’s No.1 authority on old episodes of a long-gone pop show casting its eyes and ears toward the summer of ’89 - but if you're expecting to see some Acid House tomfoolery or a full-on Madchester takeover, you're going to be massively disappointed: the only Acieeed references are on Sinitta's ears, and the only Manc in attendance is, er, Simon Parkin, who's been let out of the Broom Cupboard for his TOTP debut. And he looks like he's shitting himself throughout. Still, this episode is a definite sign that things are getting better, as long as you avoid looking at the appalling shirts that men chose to wear in that era: Brit-Hop pitches up in the shape of the Rebel MC. REM finally escape from Student Discoland into our hearts and charts. Fuzzbox get all saucy with a massive pin . And Stock Aitken and Waterman finally admit defeat with the worst No.1 of the year that didn't involve a grown man in a rabbit costume. Al Needham is joined by Sarah Bee and Neil Kulkarni for a ram of the critical arm up the cow's arse of '89, veering off to discuss being coated down by middle-aged Crusties, Mams who go into town wearing your favourite band t-shirts, suitable replacements for Africa pendants if you happen to be white and don't want to get battered, being stared at by Cyndi Lauper, and the disgusting lack of train etiquette displayed by second division pop stars. And - of course - all the swearing you could possibly need. Download | Video Playlist | Subscribe Follow us on Facebook here. Link up with us on Twitter here. Subscribe to us on iTunes here.
