Third culture kids is a term to describe people who are raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of the country named on their passport for a significant part of their childhood. Third culture kids are often exposed to a greater variety of cultural influences. While not really identifying with one culture, can make it difficult to feel like you belong anywhere there are benefits to being a third culture kids. For example, research finds that they are generally more tolerant of different cultures and of people of different backgrounds than individuals who do not share this culturally diverse background. Third Culture kids also find it easier to adapt to new cultures and understand how to behave appropriately in these new environments. Tayo Rockson, a diversity and inclusion expert, is harnessing the insights, knowledge and cultural awareness he has gained from being a third culture kid to enable people to communicate more effectively across cultural divides, connect with others in a meaningful way, and celebrate the differences around us all. Live OUT your unique identity to create an LGBTQ leadership that makes a difference in the world.Recently I listened to The TED Interview, Yuval Noah Harari reveals the real dangers ahead in which Harari explains why it might feel like there’s no future for humanity. Serendipity led me to read, George Monbiot: how do we get out of this mess? and to watch his TED Talk, “The new political story that could change everything”.https://www.ted.com/talks/george_monbiot_the_new_political_story_that_could_change_everything#t-714Both Harari and Monbiot explain that humanity is missing the next “narrative” – or as Monbiot calls it, a“Restoration Story” – one that follows the classic hero’s journey, provides us with a story of who we are, and a vision of the future in which we see ourselves living a better life. What I’m currently creating is a “living document” titled, “How to Use Your Difference to Make a Difference”. You’ve heard me use this expression on previous episodes if you’re a regular listener. If you would like to receive a copy of this document as soon as it’s available, subscribe to my newsletter so that I can send it to you.Creating a new politics of belonging instead of divisionFor reference, here are the quotations from Monbiot’s article below, that I speak to in today’s episode.“Political renewal depends on a new political story. Without a new story that is positive and propositional, rather than reactive and oppositional, nothing changes.”“The narrative we build has to be simple and intelligible. If it is to transform our politics, it should appeal to as many people as possible, crossing traditional political lines. It should resonate with deep needs and desires. It should explain the mess we are in and the means by which we might escape it. And, because there is nothing to be gained from spreading falsehoods, it must be firmly grounded in reality. This might sound like a tall order. But there is, I believe, a clear and compelling Restoration Story to be told that fits this description.”We human beings “…possess an unparalleled sensitivity to the needs of others, a unique level of concern about their welfare, and a peerless ability to create moral norms that generalise and enforce these tendencies. We are also, among mammals, the supreme cooperators.”“We have been induced by politicians, economists and journalists to accept a vicious ideology of extreme competition and individualism that pits us against each other, encourages us to fear and mistrust each other and weakens the social bonds that make our lives worth living.”“We have lost our common purpose (…) to find common ground in confronting our predicaments, and to unite to overcome them.”Support The Way of Queer Leadership.More ReadingNeoliberalism – the ideology at the root of all our problemsImage credit: Catherine Cronin

In a recent podcast with Tayo Rockson, diversity and inclusion consultant and author of Use Your Difference to Make a Difference, spoke to the idea of intentionality as a huge barrier to progress in creating a more diverse and inclusive workplaces. He detailed that organizations can’t simply decide to be diverse and inclusive. Not being against diversity and inclusion (while obviously a good start) is simply not enough to affect real change. Organizations must be consciously intentional about how they are going to facilitate inclusion and promote a diverse workplace. It doesn’t just happen. No one would ever say that Diversity and Inclusion isn’t important. No one would ever say that they aren’t trying to have a more diverse and inclusive workplace. And yet, we still have issues with both diversity and inclusion. Organizations that are not diverse will not perform as well as those that are. Diversity brings to the table the ability to innovate. Without a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and ideas, organizations will find themselves stuck in the same routine implementing the same ideas. Fortunately, in the past decades we have definitely improved in our ability to hire a more diverse workforce. The workplace of today does not look like the workplace of 20 years ago. But while we are moving in the right direction with diversity (and there’s a lot of work to be done), we still struggle with inclusion. The reason diversity and inclusion are paired together is because one without the other is largely ineffective. If we are hiring a diverse workforce simply to check an HR box, then we missing a huge opportunity to add value to our organization. We must hire a diverse workforce AND ensure that everyone feels included. Without inclusion we don’t get to draw on the benefits of diversity. If we have a diverse workplace but all the decision makers have the same background, then our efforts fall short. If we want an organization that leads the industry in innovation and progress, then we have to make sure that everyone in the organization feels included. Only with inclusion do people feel empowered to suggest new ideas and have the platform on which to do so. If it’s such a great thing, why isn’t everyone doing it? In a recent podcast with Tayo Rockson, diversity and inclusion consultant and author of Use Your Difference to Make a Difference, spoke to the idea of intentionality as a huge barrier to progress in creating a more diverse and inclusive workplaces. He detailed that organizations can’t simply decide to be diverse and inclusive. Not being against diversity and inclusion (while obviously a good start) is simply not enough to affect real change. Organizations must be consciously intentional about how they are going to facilitate inclusion and promote a diverse workplace. It doesn’t just happen. To hear the rest of the podcast go to Forging Employee Experience. To connect with Tayo, reach out to him via LinkedIn or through his website and don’t forget to pre-order his book! Diversity and inclusion is a huge opportunity to help an organization grow. It is a competitive advantage that will absolutely help companies outpace their competition. But to seize that advantage, organizations must be deliberate and intentional about how they implement. I'm so excited to announce that my book, Use Your Difference To Make A Difference is now available for pre-order. Recent years have seen dramatic changes to several institutions worldwide. Our increasingly interconnected, digitized, and globalized world presents immense opportunities and unique challenges. Modern businesses and schools interact with individuals and organizations from a diverse range of cultural and national backgrounds—increasing the likelihood for miscommunication, errors in strategy, and unintended consequences in the process. This has also spilled into our daily lives and the way we consume information today. Understanding how to navigate these and other pitfalls requires adaptability, nuanced cross-cultural communication, and effective conflict resolution. My goal with this book is to provide readers with a skills-based, actionable plan that transforms them into agents of inclusiveness, connection, and mutual understanding.By the end of the book, you should be able to:Develop self-awareness needed to be a cross-cultural communicator.Develop content, messaging techniques, marketing plans, and business strategies that translate across cultural borders.Help your employees to better understand and collaborate with clients and colleagues from different backgrounds.Create safe environments for students to be themselves.Strengthen cross-cultural competencies in yourself, your team, and your entire organization.Understand the cultural, economic, and political factors surrounding our world.I hope you will be able to check it out. Also, in today's episode, I share a speech I made at the United Nations Global Summit. Professionals from different parts of the world came together to discuss ways to tackle critical issues affecting our world.I got to share some of my thoughts on what it means to be a global leader and how the youth can make a global impact today. The people in attendance included university students, young professionals, and globally significant leaders.Hope you enjoy it and I hope it inspires you to act!Have a glorious week! As a gay man, what does it mean to live OUT the best of who you are?For me it's about recognizing if I've left any best parts of me in the closet, and which of those skills, desires, or talents I want to bring OUT to experience and enjoy. When I was a teenager growing up in the lates 70s and early 80s, I fell in love with figure skating, gymnastics, and contemporary dance. I never got to practice any of those athletic activities, but I watched – in silence and in secret. My memories are in black-and-white, simply because we had a black-and-white television when I was a teenager at home. All joking aside, I made sure that I didn't seem too interested if I was watching something like the Olympics with my parents. I didn't want to give away the attraction I had for the beautiful bodies of the men figure skating, dancing, or performing gymnastics on the rings and the bars.I never felt the freedom to express my desire to my family or my friends. At my high school, all those athletic pursuits were considered gay and anyone who expressed interest was immediately called a faggot. I longed to try out for a dance or gymnastics program, to at least discover what it would be like to express myself through that form of movement.Queer Leadership / MentorshipWhat would it have been like at 16 to have had a queer mentor, someone who could've seen the struggles I was facing as a closeted adolescent? It wasn't until my very early 30s when I decided to study personal training that I realized I had rediscovered one of the best parts of myself that I had forgotten about in my closet. One evening at the end of a yoga class the instructor said to me, "you are so flexible. Were you a gymnast when you were younger?" It was a bittersweet question, because it hurt a little but made me smile at the same time. I had unconsciously prided myself on taking care of how well my body moved and I was trying to find part of myself that I had otherwise locked away.A story like this doesn't have to be true for every gay man, but I know for many of us, especially those closer to my age at 53, we grew up at a time when we didn't have resources like the Internet to find others like us. If we felt threatened and unsafe we kept our identity as closely guarded as possible. As we grow up we may have faced our demons, talked things through, went to therapy, or used personal development to better understand ourselves. But it's amazing how great we can feel, how successful we can become, yet still feel empty. We can still wonder, is that all there is?If you've ever had a feeling like that, think about my story, and ask yourself,“Have I left the best parts of who I am in the closet? What I am not living OUT?”This is a starting point of my Living OUT Leadership “incubator”. LOL (for short) is a space for gay men to work together, understand their uniqueness and difference as gifts of leadership, to dig deep and find out if they've left the best parts of themselves in the closet, and to bring OUT those gifts to make the world a better place. As gay man we have unique and vital insights to teach others. We have a different insight than straight people. Hence the word queer, meaning different or odd (as in not the status quo). If you grew up in the closet, you will have had more than one coming out experience. You came out to different people at different times. As you discovered more about yourself, you may have let out more of who you are. You may act one way around people and another way around others.Because you can't simply point to someone and label them as gay (since there is no visible identifier) we learn to wear a mask. That mask is a social contract to keep us quiet to fit into the norm. But that's not good enough. That's not acceptable. And that might be one of the reasons why you're wondering, is that all there is. To be who you are you need to disrupt the norm!
