Does the content of a news article influence the effectiveness of ads placed within it? In this episode, JMR Co-Editor Brett Gordon discusses the recently published paper, “Attention Spillovers from News to Ads: Evidence from an Eye-Tracking Experiment,” with authors Andrewy Simonov (Columbia Business School),Tommaso Valletti, and Andre Veiga (both from Imperial College Business School). The idea for the paper was born in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the researchers learned that some advertisers were using “block lists” to prevent their ads from appearing on publishers' websites with pandemic-related news content. Did the advertisers have a point? Or, they wondered, might this be based on a misunderstanding of how we, the audience, actually engage with content and the ads that appear alongside it?

It's about building an environment where creativity thrives at every desk. This episode features Adam Kingl, an expert in reshaping how we think about leadership and strategy in the business world. Adam has influenced the minds of business leaders at prestigious institutions such as London Business School, Hult International Business School, and Imperial College Business School. He also regularly contributes as a writer and expert interviewee to The Financial Times, Sunday Times, Forbes, Fortune, The Guardian and Fast Company. Drawing on and his latest book "Sparking Success", we explore strategies that can help leaders remove the creativity blockers and spark a cultural shift towards continuous innovation. From rethinking entrenched company practices to empowering teams to think differently, Adam offers a roadmap for people who want to lead with creativity at the forefront. If you enjoy the show, please rate it on Spotify or iTunes. Your ratings help more people like you discover the podcast! Episode Highlights ·         Leadership's pivotal role in igniting organizational creativity. ·         Challenging dated assumptions that hinder management innovation. ·         The linguistic insight into “to manage” and its cultural impact on creativity. ·         Identifying organizational habits that dampen innovation. ·         Striking a balance between productivity and creative growth. ·         Tactics for leaders to build creativity-focused workspaces. ·         Debunking the myth that creativity is limited to certain sectors. ·         Concrete steps for managers to inspire team creativity. ·         Lessons from creative companies and industries applicable across all sectors. ·         Examining barriers to creativity in conventional settings. ·         Adopting ‘micro habits' for team-wide innovative thinking.   Adam's view on the greatest unmet wellbeing need at work today "Every organization is struggling with hybrid work right now, right? When do you bring people into the office, or when do you work from home? And I think part of what I've discovered is the answer is: if you're going to ask people to come into the office, give them a reason, provide a creative focus. "I want everyone in the office on Wednesday because we're going to meet with our senior-most clients talking about their biggest pain points." If you just say, "Come in because it's everyone in the office Wednesday," like Taco Tuesday, it's arbitrary, and everyone's just going to probably sit at their desk with headphones in, tapping away at their keyboard; they may as well be at home." What “working with humans” means to Adam "Working with humans is about encouraging them to find and express those qualities that make them human: curiosity, adaptability, inspiration, innovation. Surely, any organization that encourages an abundance of those qualities in their people is one that I want to work for or invest in." Hear from Bob Buhr of the Imperial College Business School, as we explore ways of organizing the risks from climate change. A risk taxonomy is a key underpinning of enterprise risk management. Used by firms to create a common risk language, it underpins a range of activities, such as risk identification, risk appetite setting and risk horizon scanning. But when it comes to the risks arising from climate change, there has been a bit of a vacuum. Some firms have chosen to use ‘green' taxonomies. But these were set up for a different purpose – that is to classify the sectoral investment opportunities from the transition to a net zero or ‘green' economy. That's why in today's episode, we'll be looking at how firms can overcome this gap, by examining a taxonomy that has been set up specifically to classify potential firm-specific climate risks. We'll explore: The challenges facing firms from a lack of suitable risk taxonomies; What the key categories within a climate risk taxonomy ought to be; and Why and how biodiversity loss and natural capital risks should be incorporated. The knowledge economy. Intellectual property. Software. Maybe even bitcoin. All pretty much intangible, and yet all clearly real and genuinely valuable. This is the realm where economist Jonathan Haskel of Imperial College London mints his own non-physical scholarship. “In the old days,” relates the co-author of Capitalism without Capital: The Rise of the Intangible Economy, “the assets of companies, the sort of secret sauce by which companies would generate their incomes and do their services for which they're employed for, was very tangible-based. These would be companies with lots of machines, these would be companies with oil tankers, with buildings, with vehicles to transport things around. Nowadays, companies like Google, like Microsoft, like LinkedIn, just look very different.” And that difference, he explains to interviewer David Edmonds in this Social Science Bites podcast, is knowledge. “What they have is knowledge,” says Haskel, “and it's knowledge assets, these intangible assets, which these companies are deploying.” Intangible investments, as you might expect, have different properties than do tangible ones. Haskel dubbed them the four S's: Scale. Once you have a handle on a successful intangible, like software, that can generally scale up without more capital spending; Sunk Costs. These are invested costs you can't get back, such as the costs of developing software; Spillovers. Aspects of your intangibles that others can copy or adopt for themselves; and Synergies. “If you put all these intangibles together,” he explains, “you get more than the sum of the parts.” Meanwhile, intangibles help keep modern economies humming – we think. “Accountants and statistical agencies are quite reluctant to measure intangibles because it's -- intangible. It's a rather difficult thing to get at; these are often goods that aren't traded from one person to another …” Part of Haskel's research effort is to quantify how much investment in intangibles is going on “behind the scenes,” which fits in with other interests of his such as re-engineering how gross domestic product gets measured. Businesses are now spending more on intangibles then on tangibles: Haskel's work reveals that for every monetary unit companies spend on tangible assets, they spend 1.15 on intangible ones. In addition to serving as a professor at the Imperial College Business School, Haskel is director of the Doctoral Programme at the Imperial. He is an elected member of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth and a research associate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, the Centre for Economic Performance, LSE, and the IZA, Bonn. Haskel has been a non-executive director of the UK Statistics Authority since 2016 and an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee since 2019.

These days every organisation wants its teams to be more entrepreneurial and innovative. From holacracy to skunk-works and MBO to self-managing teams, a wide range of approaches have been tested over time. Yet what are the key variables that drive greater performance in entrepreneurial teams? In a recent paper published in the journal Organization Science, Professor Linus Dahlander and colleagues explored the way that entrepreneurial teams are organised and structured. By looking at two key variables – autonomy over who to work with or what to work on – Dahlander and colleagues identified some key approaches that leaders and organisations can use to help their teams be more creative and innovative. Linus Dahlander is a professor at the European School of Management and Technology - ESMT Berlin, Director of Research, and the holder of the Lufthansa Group Chair in Innovation. He received his PhD in from Chalmers University of Technology and undertook post doctoral studies at Stanford University. He was previously an assistant professor and an Advanced Institute of Management Research Fellow with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at Imperial College Business School. Linus teaches in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, and networks, and is also a consultant and advisor to startups, large multinationals as well as government organizations on issues around innovation and networks. In 2017, Linus was recognized as one of the Best 40 Under 40 Professors by Poets & Quants. In his ongoing research Linus investigates how new ideas and innovations are developed in networks and communities. The ongoing projects use large-scale analysis of networks, which he integrates with a deeper appreciation for what content flows through networks. Linus seeks to study novel questions which can advance the academic literature, and which at the same time focus on issues that can affect how managers think about their business to help them make better decisions. Linus' research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Research Policy, and Strategic Management Journal among others. He served as an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal in the 2013-2016 editorial team.
