Service Business Mastery - Business Tips and Strategies for the Service Industry
Most service business owners are chasing the next lead source. Google Ads. Facebook Ads. AI. SEO. Automation. But sometimes the fastest way to grow is still the most old-school strategy in the book: getting out into your community, shaking hands, building trust, and making sure people remember your brand. In this episode of Service Business Mastery, Tersh Blissett and Joshua Crouch sit down with Chuck Worley, owner of Worley's Home Services, to talk about branding, networking, reputation, and the real-world grind behind building a service business people know, trust, and refer. Chuck shares his journey from struggling in school to building a career in HVAC sales, starting and losing a business, rebuilding from bankruptcy, paying back debts he was no longer legally required to pay, and eventually growing Worley's Home Services into a $17 million company. He also breaks down why branding is not just about a logo, why standing out matters, and how his orange and green jackets became a memorable part of his local brand. They also discuss: How Chuck went from HVAC technician to top-performing comfort advisor Why sales changed his life and gave him a path forward The painful lessons from bankruptcy and rebuilding from zero Why reputation matters more than almost anything in business How Chuck used networking to grow his company without relying only on digital marketing Why your brand needs to be memorable, even if people think it looks ridiculous How local chambers, BNI groups, and business events can generate real relationships Why referrals still matter in a world obsessed with AI and ads How Chuck used small acquisitions and owner financing to grow Why being the "power connector" in your market can create long-term growth How service business owners can start networking even if they feel uncomfortable If you are a service business owner who wants to build a brand people remember, generate more referrals, and grow through real relationships, this episode is a practical, no-BS playbook. We have a wonderful returning guest this week! Atlanta-based interior designer Lauren DeLoach is back on the podcast to share everything she learned while designing and installing her daughter's freshman dorm room at Ole Miss. As we launch the new Ballard Designs dorm line, Lauren sits down with Caroline, Taryn, and Liz to give the ultimate masterclass in dorm decorating. She explains how she tackled awkward cinderblock walls, the secret to finding the true dimensions of a dorm room, and why "Alien Tape" is a dorm parent's best friend. Quick Decorating & Dorm Takeaways: Find the "Master Map": Don't just rely on the general dorm dimensions provided by the college. Lauren explains that to truly plan a layout, you need to seek out the building's "master maps" (often passed around in college parent Facebook groups). These maps will show you exactly where the architectural quirks are located in your specific room, like vertical plumbing chases and window soffits. The Magic of Alien Tape: To soften the harsh cinder block walls, Lauren used a genius trick to hang full-wall drapery without drilling or damaging the school's property: Alien Tape! It provided enough grip to hold the drapes and create a beautiful faux-fabric wall behind the beds. Pack in IKEA Bags: When moving a kid into college, Lauren highly recommends packing softer items in the oversized, zip-up plastic IKEA bags. They are incredibly durable, hold a massive amount of stuff, and can even be checked as luggage on a flight if you are traveling out of state. Start with the Bed: In a dorm room, the bed is practically the only furniture you have to work with. Lauren and her daughter's roommate coordinated their space using a fresh "Spa and Sage" color palette from Ballard Designs. They started by picking a ditsy floral fabric for the headboards, and then layered the beds with the spa-colored Audrey coverlet and buffalo check duvets. Most founders think you need funding to build something worth selling. Oliver Bruce just proved otherwise. In this episode of The Unlock, the tables turn. Oliver is interviewed by Bruno Artis, content lead at sponsor Incard, on the full arc of Pinpoint Media. From a £50 gym video shot at college, to a multimillion pound agency, to the exit signed on 23 December 2025. No funding. No backing. Just a decade of compounding decisions. This one is built for founders who want the actual playbook, not the highlight reel.Oliver lays out the Four Founder Pillars every entrepreneur eventually needs to internalise: scale a business, buy a business, invest in businesses, raise capital. Then Oliver gets specific on the three moves that mattered most. Get your shareholder paperwork tight from day one, even if it is a back-of-the-fag-packet draft built with Claude. Hire your weakest function first, which for most founders means finance, not sales. Treat listening as a hireable skill, because the founders who interrupt the least usually scale the fastest. The second half is a tactical performance marketing playbook you can apply this week.Oliver breaks down the Winning Ad Set vs Learning Ad Set structure his team runs on Meta. Sixty to eighty percent of budget into proven creative, the rest into a learning pool that feeds the winners. Most founders kill campaigns at week one. Oliver runs them for four to six weeks before making any call.Oliver also reframes social media as interest media. People do not scroll to be social anymore. They scroll to be interested. That single shift changes how you brief creators, what you boost, and when.Oliver makes the case for GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation as the single most underpriced marketing channel available to founders in 2026. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity do not yet serve paid ads in the UK. Whoever shows up in those answers now will own discovery for the next five years.Key topics covered: The full PinPoint Media exit story, from university dorm to multimillion pound sale The Four Founder Pillars: scale, buy, invest, raise Why founders should hire finance first, not last The Winning Ad Set vs Learning Ad Set structure for Meta Why most paid campaigns get killed too early Interest media: why social media is no longer the right name Organic before paid: the correct DTC sequencing for limited budgets GEO as the biggest current marketing opportunity for founders Using Hemingway plus a custom GPT to write AI-ready website copy What is next for Oliver: Caper, angel tickets and The Unlock relaunch Key takeaway: The founders who win are the ones who pair tight data with real listening. Most people think building a billion-dollar consumer brand requires a Stanford MBA, a celebrity co-sign, and a war chest of venture capital. The reality is messier. The person making that case mixed nootropics in his college dorm room, helped his paralyzed best friend find his edge again with the same compounds, and turned a piece of gum into one of the fastest-growing functional brands in America. In this episode, I sit down with Kent Yoshimura, neuroscientist, martial artist, muralist, and co-founder of Neuro Gum. We break down why the founder's identity matters more than the ingredient list, why cold compression makes most creatine gummies a scam, and why nano-influencers will quietly outperform every Kardashian-tier post by 2027. Kent also opens up about the trademark lawsuit that nearly killed the company, the Daniel Lubetzky DM that ended a war of attrition in a single message, the 25,000-creator Discord running Neuro's TikTok flywheel, the $10 million raise that built the team, and what he would do with $10,000 if he had to start a brand over today. This conversation will completely change how you think about cognitive performance, founder credibility, and what it takes to build a brand people trust over an algorithm. *Reduce your risk of Alzheimer's with my science-backed protocol for women 30+:*https://go.neuroathletics.com.au/youtube-sales-page Subscribe to The Neuro Experience for evidence-based conversations at the intersection of brain science, longevity, and performance. _____ *TOPICS DISCUSSED*(00:00:00) Intro: Mixing Supplements in a Dorm Room and the Birth of Neuro Gum (00:04:27) Martial Arts, Triathlon, and What Elite Sport Teaches You About Business (00:14:08) Ryan's Snowboarding Accident and the Accessibility Mission (00:24:03) Cold Compression, Why Creatine Gummies Are a Scam, and the Melatonin Myth (00:30:23) The 2020 Inflection Point: CVS, Shark Tank, and Joe Rogan (00:31:23) The TikTok Playbook: Posting Every Day for a Year With No Agency (00:42:19) The 25,000-Creator Community and Paying Out a Quarter Million a Month (00:46:27) The $300 Million Lawsuit and the Daniel Lubetzky DM That Saved Neuro Gum (00:53:11) Why Red Bull's Dietrich Mateschitz Is Kent's Hero (01:00:17) AI, One-Person Billionaires, and Why Humanity Is the New Commodity (01:03:44) First Principles for Anyone Starting a Brand Today (01:08:40) The End of Mega-Influencers and the Rise of Nano Trust (01:09:49) What He Would Do With 10,000 Dollars to Start a Brand Today_______ *Thank you to our sponsors*Pulsetto: https://pulsetto.tech/pages/NEURO or use Code NEURO for some off your orderHuel: https://www.huel.com/neuro use promo code NEURO for 15% OFF (New Customers, Min. $75 purchase)KetoneIQ: https://ketone.com/NEURO for 30% OFFDailyBasis: https://www.dailybasislife.com/NEURO for 50% off first month _______ I'm Louisa Nicola - clinical neurophysiologist - Alzheimer's prevention specialist - founder of Neuro Athletics. Don and Dude rewind to the tiny shared spaces and thumping stereos of their college years for a pair of dorm room staples that shaped how they hear music and each other. Britpop era melancholy and messy alt rock chaos meet as they revisit the comfort, conflict, and late night oversharing baked into two records they once pushed on every friend who would listen. The AlbumsMorrissey – Vauxhall and I (1994) English icon softens his armor on a somber, elegant solo high point, trading sneer for reflection as warm, chiming guitars and unhurried arrangements frame songs about grief, aging, and the strange dignity of feeling out of step with the world.Blind Melon – Soup (1995) Post "No Rain" expectations implode on a jittery, New Orleans soaked follow up where brass bands, banjos, and swampy riffs circle addiction, black humor, and psychic free fall, capturing a band pulling itself apart even as the songs grow bolder and more haunted.Diggin' AlbumsFlea – Honora (2026) Chili Peppers bassist steps into the spotlight with a jazz leaning, emotionally searching solo set that blends rubbery bass, trumpet, and restless grooves into pieces that feel improvised, intimate, and quietly obsessed with finding new corners of his musical voice. The White Buffalo – On the Widow's Walk (2020) Gravel voiced Americana storyteller trades some of his rowdier edges for slow burning, coastal twilight songs about regret, resilience, and small moral crossroads, the kind of record that sounds like replaying old choices on a long walk home.Widowspeak – Roses (2026) Brooklyn duo keep sinking deeper into hazy, slow motion guitar pop, letting molasses tempos, smoky vocals, and dusky twang drift together into songs that feel like half remembered conversations replayed in the glow of a bedside lamp.Traitrs – Possessor (2026) Toronto darkwave pair push their icy synths and driving basslines into even more cinematic territory, stitching club ready pulses to echo drenched vocals and doomed romance hooks that sound tailor made for late night train rides and nervous stares across the floor.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“When I went to college, I lived on campus, and the guys I hung out with made the characters in Revenge of the Nerds look like the Rat Pack in 1962.” – Dennis Miller

For this special spooky episode, we came dressed for the occasion to share some of our listeners' most terrifying real life stories. We start with our own spooky life updates, including Erin's overstimulating trick-or-treating experience and Mike's preparations for his first Halloween handing out candy. We also revisit our own brushes with the paranormal, from Erin growing up in a haunted house where she'd see the ghost of a young girl , to Mike's high school adventures searching for ghosts from the pages of "Weird New Jersey". Then, we dive into the chilling stories you sent in, and we have to warn you, they might give you nightmares. We read about a college student who woke in the middle of the night to find a stranger sitting on the end of her bed , a harrowing late night drive that was interrupted by a man wielding a sledgehammer, and multiple tales of children seeing things that aren't there—like the ghost of a "lady in white" at a summer camp and a baby reaching for an unseen figure in a closet. We also share the incredibly eerie story of a daughter's strange premonition at the haunted Stanley Hotel that coincided with a friend's unexpected passing , and a dream that led to a cherished text message mysteriously disappearing forever. Even Dan, who is never scared, shares a truly unsettling experience from his days working alone in a claustrophobic steel mill chute where he came face-to-face with something inexplicable. We also explore the haunted history of Camp Randall Stadium , the curse of Billy Penn that haunted Philadelphia sports for 20 years , the real-life story of the Annabelle doll and the paranormal investigator who died suddenly while touring with it , and the modern-day spookiness of a viral AI-generated social media account that looks frighteningly real. Finally, to cleanse the palate, we end with a much needed compilation of adorable dogs in Halloween costumes.

meditation mnemonic-I want it said of me by those who knew me best, that I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower would grow.—Abraham LincolnIt's like the game of hide and seek,Where silence hides and shadows peek.Truth counts slow behind closed eyes,While guilt runs off in thin disguise. The seeker's hand sweeps through the air,To catch the scent of what's not there.A breath is held beneath the floor,The game is not a game anymore. It's like the game of hide and seek,Where silence hides and shadows peek.Truth counts slow behind closed eyes,While guilt runs off in thin disguise. But every corner has its cost,And every soul who must be lost. The wooden door creaks, giving way,To light that ruins night and day. It's like the game of hide and seek,Where silence hides and shadows peek.Truth counts slow behind closed eyes,While guilt runs off in thin disguise. You find a place inside your head,Where secret fears are safely fed.And though the call is loud and near,You hope they never find you here.(Focus on the Tension/The Reveal):(Focus on the Personal/Internal Conflict):I call it "The Game."It's a game of our own consciousness, you see. And it sounds a little something like this:It's like the game of hide and seek,Where silence hides and shadows peek.Truth counts slow behind closed eyes,While guilt runs off in thin disguise.Think about that for a minute. That truth—our authentic, healthy self—it's counting. It's waiting for us to stop running. And what is running? It's the guilt, the shame, the little worries we let dress up and look like urgent business. They're distractions, plain and simple. We spend so much time building fortifications for these feelings. We hide them, hoping they'll just go away. You find a place inside your head,Where secret fears are safely fed.And though the call is loud and near,You hope they never find you here. That "place inside your head" is the default mode network we talk about, folks. It's where the internal chatter lives. The "never find you here" is the fear of being vulnerable, the fear that if we truly connect our heart and our mind—if we achieve that lovely heart-brain coherence—we might have to face those fears we've been nurturing. But the real secret, my friends, is that the Seeker is you. That truth counting slow behind your eyes? That's your breath. That's your centered self. The game ends when you simply stop running and allow your own light to find you in the hiding place. That's the work of heart-brain coherence—it turns the seeker into the found. The Seeker's Burden: If your "Truth counts slow behind closed eyes," what daily rituals are you using right now that actually hinder your ability to finally open them and see yourself clearly?Guilt's Disguise: We know guilt "runs off in thin disguise." What does it take to reinvent a legacy category for the modern consumer? In this episode, Mike Lombardo, the co-founder of better-for-you iced tea brand Halfday, shares the journey of transforming a college side hustle into a fast-growing challenger brand. Mike opens up about the brand's early missteps, and why putting flavor first became a non-negotiable product principle. He also shares how Halfday secured coveted shelf space at Whole Foods, partnered with one of New York City's most influential distributors, and how a last-minute decision to attend BevNET Live led to a major investment that helped propel the business forward. It's about building something real without a safety net and how you could trust yourself long before the world gives you permission.
