The stories in The Vanishing Point, Paul Theroux's new collection, span the globe from Hawaii and the South Seas to Africa and New England. They have all the qualities I love in his fiction: a sharp bite of satire that skewers pretension, crisp dialogue, and an eye for the small, clear detail — an action, a pattern of speech, an element of dress — that reveals someone's deepest character. He describes the things we all see but don't mention in polite conversation, and he shines a light on thoughts we actively avoid. Paul is the author of some 33 works of fiction including The Mosquito Coast and The Bad Angel Brothers, and 19 travel books including The Great Railway Bazaar and Dark Star Safari, books that cemented his standing as our greatest living travel writer. We had a wide-ranging conversation about the core themes in these stories, including aging, childhood reading, and how taking risks can make you wise.

Some songs and their writers get to you by degrees. Some creep up on your consciousness, a verse here, a chorus there. Others land on your world in a song. That's all it takes. It's not a lot, and then it's everything. In this episode, songwriter Randy Kaplan and I talk about the moment his song “Slow Eater” landed in my world, and then we unpack a lifetime of incredible moments, from Los Angeles and coming up with luminaries like Dan Bern and Andras Jones to a career on TV, including ‘Beauty and the Beast,' scenes with Jennifer Aniston in 'Ferris Bueller,' and more. And that's just scratching the surface.Clips in this episode: Slow Eater (Randy Kaplan, ‘Boyish Hips') - 1997 Tootsie Roll (Randy Kaplan, ‘Perfect Gentleman') - 2004Crushed Berries (Randy Kaplan, ‘Miraculous Dissolving Cures') - 2001Shampoo Me (Randy Kaplan, ‘Five Cent Piece') - 2006Mosquito Song (Randy Kaplan, ‘Five Cent Piece') - 2006 Candy Man Blues (Randy Kaplan, ‘Shake It and Break It') - 2019Beauty and the Beast (‘Snow' d. After six years without releasing new music, Melbourne melodic metal veterans Vanishing Point triumphantly returned in late 2020 with the highly rated album Dead Elysium.Despite being robbed of valuable touring opportunities because of recent world events, the band have vowed to make up for lost time this month and into next when they take to the road for a special run of shows and finally get to deliver the full sonic experience of the album live.Vocalist Silvio Massaro joined HEAVY to talk about the tour, starting with bringing up the fact that the tour is finally happening."Mate, honestly, we felt like that for a very, very long time,” he sighed. “You've gotta think, we released the album nearly two years ago and we're finally touring with it now. It's not something obviously we planned to do, but, hey, we've finally got an opportunity to get out there and so we will. Before when we tried to get these gigs booked in it was just too difficult with the lockdowns and all the uncertainties going on. We're just glad and grateful it's all over and we're able to get back out there."In the full interview, Silvio talks more about the tour and what to expect, falling in love with your music all over again, the fact Dead Elysium was Vanishing Points first album in six years and why, things the band discussed leading in to it, translating atmospherics in music to the live arena, future plans and more.

Read our lips: Kissing Doesn't Kill. Greed and Indifference Do. We here at BYWAP have thought long and hard about how we wanted to celebrate PRIDE on our podcast. As two queer women, we acknowledge the celebration and trauma that comes from LGBTQI+ legacy. The first Pride was a riot, and this will be no different. In a joyful, tearful recounting of today's article, we implore you to take stock of how far we have come as a community, and how far we still have to go. Don't let June be the only month you embrace queer history. Learn the artists, say their names. Get Keith Haring tattooed on your arm, hang cut-outs of Robert Mapplethorpe on your wall, cry with Aziz + Cucher as they navigated the miracle of medical advancement, and make art to remember the loss of your loved ones like David Wojnarowicz. Remember, this isn't 'gay as in happy', this is 'queer as in no cops at PRIDE.' Our article for today is Vanishing Points: Art, AIDS, and the Problem of Visibility from Richard Meyer's book Outlaw Representation: Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art (2002). Join us as we investigate the cultural climate of the American AIDS epidemic, denounce artistic censorship, listen to Stephanie nearly cry several times, ACT UP as we add our voices to the chants of Silence=Violence, and offer sympathetic hearts to the work and life of artists like David Wojnarowicz. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Donate. Sign petitions. Support Black-owned businesses. Challenge racism. Educate yourselves. Listen. Speak. Repatriate. Stay Safe. If you like what we do, you can support BYWAP over on our Patreon! Find us online! You can follow BYWAP on Twitter and Instagram. You can also find us over on our website! We want to hear from you, to share this time with you. We're in this together, and we're better together. Please leave us a review wherever you listen to podcasts. Every little bit helps as we grow, and we cannot wait to talk to you all again. This is global. Your voice matters. Systemic change is possible. It will not happen overnight—so keep fighting! To celebrate the publication of Vanishing Points, a new showcase of writing from El Salvador, Tania Pleitez Vela and Claudia Castro Luna were at the shop to discuss the anthology, which aims to challenge the traditional concepts of nationality and the idea of a 'national literature'. The anthology includes stories from the likes of Horacio Castellanos Moya, Jacinta Escudos, Miguel Huezo Mixco, Rafael Menjívar Ochoa and Ana Escoto, showcasing authors that reside in El Salvador as well as authors that have emigrated to the United States, Mexico, Argentina and Europe. Thus, Vanishing Points offers both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking readers an array of linguistic, thematic and aesthetic contrasts. This is Kalina’s second volume––the first one was dedicated to poetry and published in 2014––and also a first of its kind: a bridge and an opportunity for Salvadoran writers to establish a dialogue with the literary community at large. This event took place with the support of the Embassy of El Salvador. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
