Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, May 1, 2025  Commercial Metals says #YesWV, building a state-of-the-art steel mill in Berkeley County…WV Economic Development authority financing helps iconic potato chip maker Mister Bee triple their capacity…and a West Virginia couple looks to the WV Small Business Center for assistance in launching their kayak loading company…on today's daily304.   #1 – From WVDED – Commercial Metals Company is making a significant investment in West Virginia by constructing a state-of-the-art micro mill in Berkeley County. This $450 million facility will produce 500,000 tons of straight-length and spooled rebar annually. CMC chose West Virginia for its strategic location, offering efficient access to major metropolitan markets in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest regions. Additionally, the state's welcoming business climate and skilled, available labor force make it an ideal location for CMC's expansion. The new micro mill will be one of the most environmentally friendly steelmaking operations globally, utilizing 100% recycled steel as raw material and electric energy for production. New owner Mary Anne Ketelsen was determined to make sure the brand would be around for generations to come. When she took over in 2018, the operation needed to be completely rehauled. With West Virginia Economic Development Authority financing, Mister Bee was able to triple their capacity, make new products, and hire more people. Watch the video: https://eda.wv.gov/iconic-potato-chip-manufacturer-is-thriving-with-wveda-support/   #3 – From WVSBDC – Like many West Virginians, Jeff and Vicki Wilson shared a passion for the outdoors. But the couple struggled to load and unload their heavy fishing kayaks -- a tiring and time-consuming task that left them frustrated. The challenge they faced sparked an idea, and with support from the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, they were able to make their dream into a reality. The partnership resulted in the launch of Kayak Loading Solutions, a West Virginia-made quality product that also helps boost the economic health of the community and state.  Read more: https://wvsbdc.com/how-wv-sbdc-helped-kayak-loading-solutions-turn-an-idea-into-a-reality/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. She is passionate about education - especially about adult learning and the value/impact it has on student learning.  Vicki's interests include educator learning, leadership, organizational change, progressive and innovative practices in education, and leveraging best practices at school to make an improvement so that all students get the best possible education. Vicki is especially proud of the journey she took as a 16-year principal where she lead a school through a closing and merger, instituted a strength-based approach to instructional rounds empowering teachers to learn and grow from each other's strengths, and eventually led her school to become a nationally recognized Model PLC School by Solution Tree.  Under Vicki's leadership, Monroe became known as a student-centered school that values both student and adult collaborative learning. In 2020, Vicki Published Lead With Instructional Rounds: Creating a Culture of Professional Learning, a Lead Like a Pirate Guidebook, with Dave Burgess Consulting. This book shares the journey of a difficult school merger and how it healed and grew into a healthy school culture using a unique school-centered approach to instructional rounds. In 2021, Vicki was part of a 100 author collaboration to write 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Teachers Should Stop Doing and 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Administrators Should Stop Doing, both published by Pushing Boundaries Consulting.Currently Vicki trains and develops schools to implement her grassroots approach to instructional rounds with a strength-focused lens that empowers school staff to learn and grow from and with each other. She also works with Solution Tree as an associate to deliver professional development in Professional Learning Communities at Work, consults and leads professional learning with schools/districts through the transition and change process associated with school closings and mergers, and coaches/mentors school leaders.  Vicki enjoys connecting with a professional learning network (PLN) through Twitter, Twitter chats, blogs, and events.Key Takeaways:Use your staff meetings to share positive wise practices from instructional rounds. You must make special time to validate the hosts of your instructional rounds so that it builds intrinsic value.Write validating notes to classroom teachers who host visits. There needs to be a structured way to share results of instruction around with the whole staff. The power of positive talk only is what makes grassroots change from instructional rounds successfully occur.Never force people to participate in instructional rounds, but always continue to positively invite. You must explicitly separate yourself from the role of evaluator during instructional rounds for them to be successful.Use body language and other physical queues to show that you are facilitating, not evaluating.Start instructional rounds slow with ideas. Make sure that all comments are positive.Don't always focus on deficits when you're trying to make improvements. Tune in to listen to my conversation with Vicki Wilson, one of New Zealand's top equestrians. I first met Vicki during the inaugural Kaimanawa Stallion Challenge in '14 and we were both presenters/clinicians at the national horse expo for many years.   About Vicki Wilson: Vicki Wilson was riding not long after she could walk. She started competitive showjumping at 15, and began working full time with horses when she was about 17 years old in the far north of New Zealand. After working her way up from local gymkhanas, Vicki has won more awards at the New Zealand Horse of the Year show than any other rider in history. Winning the World Cup in 2014 took her showjumping career to another level, and she's now one of New Zealand's most successful riders. Outside of the competition arena, Vicki has a special talent for working with ‘difficult' horses and can start any young horse. She is hugely proud of her work with the local Kaimanawa wild horses, the wild brumbies of Australia and American mustangs. Vicki has started hundreds of young horses and has a very specific philosophy that puts the welfare of the horse first and produces “a happy horse that loves its work”. Vicki cemented her place as one of the world's most highly respected horsewomen after winning World Championship of Colt Starting title at the Road to the Horse in both 2017 & 2018. Vicki Wilson Equine Therapy is aimed at helping as many sore horses as possible. She believes there's no such thing as a problem or naughty horse and that undesirable behaviour is almost always a symptom of pain or fear. https://www.vickiwilson.nz/ Vicki Wilson (facebook.com) Vicki Wilson (@vickiwilsonequestrian)   About Life In The Saddle Podcast: Join horseman Ben Longwell, an American Cowboy living in New Zealand, as he shares stories & adventures and interviews extraordinary men and women in the equine and ranching industries to gain insight into horsemanship and life itself. In this week’s episode I’m thrilled to bring you day 3 of the EQUITANA Australia VIP super ticket holder sessions where I was the MC for the event. In this episode you will hear from Vicki Wilson from New Zealand, Vicki competes at the highest level of show jumping, she starts horses and also does Equine Therapy, by that I mean body work for horses. In my opinion Vicki is changing the way people all over the world, see horses with what they consider to be bad behaviour. In 2017, Vicki Wilson was the first New Zealander to win the coveted World Championship colt starting competition at the Road to the Horse in the USA. Vicki named her horse Kentucky and brought him home. Their journey is an inspiring story of a friendship which will take them together into the future, this story you can read on Vicki’s website. Vicki went on to win the Road to the Horse 2018, making her the back-to-back World Champion of Colt Starting.Vicki has a load of firsts at The Road to the Horse, but the one I personally love the most, is that she is the first person to ever use body work on their colt. That’s the change she is making to the world of horse people, she shows them how you can take a difficult horse to being quiet and responsive by understanding them and alleviating any pain they are feeling. On this panel there is also Dave Manchon from The Rooftop Express Show, David has an incredibly entertaining show that he wows audiences with all over Australia, I saw him and his team a few years ago at the local show and it was lots of fun, his show at EQUITANA is next level entertainment, if you ever get a chance to see them please do yourself a favour and get there. In his spare time he is a professional horse trainer with his business flex horse training. With David on this panel is his little sidekick Bella Southern who is 9 years old and also his long-time mate and also a part of his show Anthony Cootes. These guys are a lot of fun but don’t be fooled, they are very experienced horse people in their own right and have a lot to give to those around them. This is another great day and the thanks has to go to EQUITANA Australia for putting on a great event and allowing me to be a part of it. And also, allowing me to record these sessions and share them with you. Here are all the links you will need to get in touch with these guestsVicki Wilson - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeDavid Manchon - Rooftop Express Show on Facebook, Instagram, Flex Horse Training FacebookTo see pictures of the day please go to my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/blog

Vicki Wilson New Zealand Horsewoman Vicki Wilson was invited to the all-woman 2017 Road to the Horse Championship.  An establish show jumper and an accomplished horsewoman in her home country, Vicki Wilson always seems to be looking for a new challenge.  The RTTH competition pits horsemen and women against unbroken colts and judges how much they can accomplish in three days.  Traveling from New Zealand, Vicki was determined to showcase her horsemanship skills.  The horse she chose, "Kentucky", moved suddenly as she dismounted the first day.  The quick move triggered an old injury and Vicki's shoulder dislocated.  Any good competitor relies on good physio and pure adrenaline to get them through a competition. Vicki Wilson continued the competition and went on to win the championship.  More importantly, she will be traveling back to the US to compete at the 2018 Road to the Horse. A Horse Needs to Feel Good To Perform Good In looking at the YouTube videos of the RTTH we came across the bodywork clinic Vicki demonstrated and were amazed at the difference she could make in two horses in a very short time.  Vicki told us that a good horse doesn't simply wake up one day and decide to do something bad.  There is usually a cause of the problem.  Her "Sore Horse" presentation really opened our eyes.  Give it a look:   Links Heard on the Vicki Wilson Podcast Vicki Wilson Horsemanship Facebook Page Wilson Sisters Horsemanship Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Double Dan Horsemanship Road to the Horse Tell Us Your Problems Have a problem with your horse?  Do you have a favorite trainer you would like to hear from?  Send us your question and the name of your favorite trainer and we'll see if we can contact them and get you an answer.  Email John@whoapodcast.com or call on our message line (661) 368-5530 (toll charges may apply).
