In this episode, Dr. Farina King and guest co-host Dr. Kiara Vigil talk with the editors and contributors of the new book Lyda Conley and the Fight to Preserve Huron Indian Cemetery, which tells the story of a trailblazing Wyandot lawyer and activist who defended the burial grounds of her family and ancestors in Kansas City. This work focuses on the life and legacy of Eliza ("Lyda") Burton Conley, a Wyandot woman whose fight to protect her people's burial ground continues to shape how we think about federal Indian law, sovereignty, and memory in the United States. Lyda is widely recognized as the first Indigenous woman to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, but as our guests remind us, she never stood alone. Her sisters Ida and Helena, and generations of Wyandot women, shared in the labor of defending their cemetery and their community, both in the courts and on the ground. Our guests—historian and educator Dr. Tai Edwards, Wyandot Nation of Kansas member and editor Stephanie Bennett, researcher and writer Samantha (Sam) Gill, and Wyandotte playwright Madeline (Maddie) Easley—discuss how their collaborative book brings together biography, archival documents, oral histories, and theater. They talk about reading newspapers and treaties against the grain, navigating access to scattered archives, and recording oral histories with living relatives and tribal leaders. The book offers not just a narrative of Lyda's life but a source reader and teaching tool that invites more research and classroom conversation.Together, the editors and contributors frame Lyda's story as a refusal to accept erasure—what they call “fighting for memory, fighting for honor.” Their work reminds us why this story matters now, in a moment when Indigenous lands, ancestors, and rights are still contested, and when community-based scholarship and art can help chart more just futures. The University Press of Kansas launched the Lyda Conley Series on Trailblazing Indigenous Futures several years ago named in honor of Lyda Conley. Kiara Vigil, Tai Edwards, and Farina King serve as co-editors of the series, and they have hoped for a book to acknowledge and highlight the life and work of Lyda Conley. Finally, that hope is realized with this new book.Resources:Order the book Lyda Conley and the Fight to Preserve Huron Indian Cemetery Samantha Gill, blog piece titled, “Lyda Conley: Women's History Everyone Should Know” (March 2026) “As a thank you for reading the UPK blog, enjoy 20% off this new book when you order directly from the University Press of Kansas website. She moved to Kansas a decade ago to earn degrees from Bethany College and Emporia State University. She stayed in Emporia and now serves as the publicist and poetry editor for Meadowlark Press, and the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for House of Morrow. She is the author of Thank You (Spartan Press, 2018) and Cravings (Meadowlark Press, 2025) and the co-author of Live a Great Story (Analog Submission Press, 2019) and While Away: Travel Poems (Spartan Press, 2022). Linzi is a recipient of a NextGen Under 30 Kansas Award.  Pay attention: Linzi Garcia knows the recipe for a good poem—honesty, longing, and a bit of blood. In Cravings, Garcia boldly embraces the messiness of life, love, and growing older, day by day. The characters in Garcia's poems are all flawed, and the better for it. They swallow their sins, break bread together, and toast to creation. Some of these poems are as sweet and warm as fresh-baked cookies at 2 a.m., while others turn up the heat. But never enough to burn you. Just enough to leave you hungry for more. What readers are saying: Cravings is a book of many hungers—of the foods desired at 2:00 a.m., of the places that are rich with memories, of the loves that are a holiday and of the loves that last and become a home. Linzi is talented at distilling so many moments to their most intimate details. She witnesses and listens at intersections, in bars, to police scanners and offers tender snapshots of moments that might otherwise have been overlooked. The world asks us to pay attention and these poems say yes. —Traci Brimhall, Poet Laureate of Kansas (2023-26), Love Prodigal

Locally, the Hands Off protests filled the sidewalks of Woodward Avenue with thousands of people, running from the DIA to Little Caesars Arena and back on Saturday, April 5. They also popped up across Metro Detroit - from Ferndale to Wyandotte - and in many cities across the country. Not only did we go, we talked to people on the streets of Detroit. We discuss the wider things that are happening that are directly impacting Metro Detroit, Michigan and the nation at this crucial time. We get into some thorny issues: Why a lot of Black people are sitting out of protests in general, to generational differences around hope, to what's at stake in a greater sense.  Feedback as always - dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot com and 313-789-3211, leave us a voicemail for the podcast Daily Detroit shares what to know and where to go in Detroit every day. We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In today's episode of 'Discover Daily', we explore the healthcare bill, H.R. 206, thats making waves in Congress as it proposes to allow AI systems to prescribe medications. The Healthy Technology Act of 2023 could revolutionize healthcare delivery by qualifying AI as prescribing practitioners, sparking intense debates over patient safety, algorithmic bias, and the future of medical decision-making in an AI-powered healthcare system. We then turn to Kansas, a state grappling with the largest tuberculosis outbreak in U.S. history since the 1950s, with 67 active cases and 79 latent infections primarily concentrated in Wyandotte and Johnson counties. While health officials emphasize that the risk to the general public remains low, the outbreak has prompted an aggressive containment strategy including free testing, enhanced contact tracing, and collaboration with CDC experts. Then in tech industry developments, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warns about the Jevons Paradox in AI, as Chinese startup DeepSeek introduces groundbreaking efficient models. Nadella suggests that improved efficiency could paradoxically lead to unprecedented levels of AI consumption, potentially reshaping the entire tech industry and raising crucial questions about sustainability and energy usage in the AI sector. From Perplexity's Discover Feed: https://www.perplexity.ai/page/ai-prescription-bill-proposed-qjHVQk3ORxCsufj4FODmGwhttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/tb-outbreak-hits-kansas-QtMgE.T8S0GP3Esmk0sGVQ https://www.perplexity.ai/page/nadella-predicts-jevons-parado-lXTDyvFjTuaoa1p5Jp3OuA Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. There are still some final approvals to complete, but once that is done, a commemorative plaque or letter will be put in the park “in recognition of the Shawnee people's bravery and role in this part of American history.” Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha rivers. The name comes from the Wyandotte language, meaning “point between two waters.” It is home to a granite obelisk honoring the frontiersman who fought and died in the 1774 Battle of Point Pleasant, as well as to the grave of legendary Shawnee Chief Cornstalk.  Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/mason-county-wv/tu-endie-wei-state-park-added-to-national-underground-railroad-network-to-freedom/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Three missionary priests draw parallels between the work of the Gospel in far-off lands and the new evangelization in Detroit(0:04) Fr. Stephen Mutie, SAC, a priest currently serving in Wyandotte, reflects on his first missionary assignment with the Irish Pallottine community 15 years ago in a remote and rural part of Tanzania. Born in Kenya, Fr. Mutie's own vocation was influenced by missionaries. He discusses the unique challenges of ministering as a foreign missionary.(5:13) Fr. Mutie describes how his flock in Tanzania was spread wide and thin, with few priests and resources to serve them. Because of these shortages, Catholics in the poor country valued the simple things like faith, family, catechesis and the Eucharist. He draws parallels to his missionary work here in the United States.(9:32) Listeners are introduced to Fr. Jeremy Davis, SOLT, another missionary priest serving with the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity at St. Gabriel Parish in southwest Detroit. Two years ago, Fr. Davis served as associate director of a boarding school for troubled and abandoned youths in Mexico.(12:22) Because the kids in his care often lacked parental figures, Fr. Davis found himself taking on the role of “father” more literally than he ever thought possible. (14:44) Fr. Davis describes what drew him to the priesthood, and how the demands of his current assignment might be different, but the spiritual needs are not.(16:37) The last missionary priest to whom listeners are introduced is Fr. Ken Mazur, PIME, whose first and only missionary assignment began in 1991 in a place far from home: Japan. While many might think of missionary work as primarily belonging to poor countries, Fr. Mazur notes that Japan, at just 1% Christian, is a fertile mission field.(18:54) Fr. Mazur describes his adjustment period to life in Japan, which included learning a new language and culture and understanding how he could best make an impact as a priest in a small Catholic parish on the outskirts of Tokyo.(23:56) Just like in America, Fr. Mazur talks about how little moments of witness — at a wedding, or in the context of a parish school — can plant seeds that may blossom with God's blessings.(26:23) Fr. Davis sums up the experience of missionary work and compares it to the charge of evangelization that all the baptized are given. Whether in Detroit or halfway around the world, the bottom line is the same: sharing the Gospel for love of Christ.Reporting by Daniel Meloy; script by Casey McCorry; narration and production by Ron PangbornFor your home financing, choose Alliance Catholic Credit Union. Mr. Big is on their "Big Finish" tour and makes a stop in southeast Michigan at District 142 in Wyandotte on May 30th.  Mr. Big From The Start Eric told me the entire story of how the band started after his solo career had seemed to fizzle out in the late 80s. He spoke of meeting Billy Sheehan, a guy who he didn't know about. It was interesting to hear how the pieces came together. New Mr. Big Drops On July 12th Eric had a lot to say about the upcoming album. Their 10th record Ten drops on July 12th. He told me how he and Paul recorded demos for all the songs. "We mapped it out perfectly," he said. Eric talked of starting from scratch on this album and the reason for doing so. Jay Ruston produced this album, as Eric explained to me why they went with the rock producer. "I liked what he did with the last Winery Dogs album...that record was slick" I also grabbed a couple questions from some of his solo bandmates, PJ Farley and Jason Hartless. Those made for a few laughs. Fun conversation with Eric for sure! I cannot wait to hear the full album.

Steve Richards from Taproot was kind enough to join me to talk to all things Taproot.  I opened up the conversation by asking him what it's been like to be back out on tour with the band. "It's been really cool" Steve replied. He explained how their tour isn't a grueling grind, but one where they meet up on weekends. He also spoke to touring with new music under his belt. He's known these songs for years, but he had to teach them to the other guys. "Playing the new songs is really cool because it's something I never planned on." He also told me about shooting the video for "Favuorite Song" at the Buffalo Bill house, which you can see below. He explained how they decided to shoot it there.  "Not so much. At this point it's me literally trying to remember words" was his response to the question about how much pressure is on him, being the creative force, spokesperson, and face of the band. "I don't feel too much pressure. I love being out there."  As far as touring is concerned, Steve now has a family that he gets to see and take to some shows.  He told me about guesting on a song for someone that he's working on now. "I've got some really cool harmonies. The topic is really dark and creepy" He said he really likes working on other stuff for people.  Of course, I couldn't let him go without asking his thoughts on Patrick Kane playing for the Detroit Red Wings. We're big hockey fans, so this is close to our hearts.  Steve and the guys are great people! Really looking forward to seeing them again this weekend at District 142 in Wyandotte, Michigan.
