Storyteller Leslie Zemeckis talks with Josh Molina about her award-winning, women-centered films that tell the lost stories of powerful women in history. Her most recent documentary Grandes Horizontales tells the story of mid-1805s courtesans who accumulated wealth, power and property by breaking the rules, when women could now marry or work outside of their class. From her website lesliezemeckis.com: "It isn't for us to judge their choices but to reveal the answers behind the why and the what about these free-spirited, determined women that inspired decades of artists who tried to capture their likeness, their essence, their appeal." She also talks about her body of work, including "Bound by Flesh" about conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, and the award-winning "Mabel, Mabel, Tiger Trainer" about the first female tiger trainer, Mabel Stark, Zemeckis explains why she was called to tell the stories of women and the lessons we can learn from powerful women in the past. She also teaches writing and storytelling and recently returned to a full-time schedule at Santa Barbara City College. Joshua Molina is an award-winning journalist who creates compelling conversations with dynamic individuals on the topics of housing, education, culture, art, politics and so much more. What an insane story this is! Conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton were sold by their own mother to a savvy businesswoman who turned their disability into a profit making machine for herself. These poor young women were taken advantage from the moment they were born. Bound By Flesh is their story and although this is a little known documentary, it's worth watching. If anything, you'll get to hear Misty and Amarilys talk about Mt. Dew vs. Water, Mr. & Mrs. Dursley, mountain lions, raccoons, and how the Hilton twins really liked married men. Top Take-a-ways: Story is powerful. Use your voice to lift others by sharing their story! When women support each other, we change the world. It’s never too late to revive the untold stories of the past.   The power of social media is undeniable because of the way it allows us all to tell our story. Even though we have always had story, in the past stories were only written down by those with power. Consequently, many stories were never written, shared, or remembered, and many people’s voices were silenced or lost. Today’s episode bridges the gap between the stories of the past and the power of storytelling and social media today. Today’s guest, Leslie Zemeckis, is a master of both storytelling and the power of social media. She tells the stories of women in American pop culture from the early part of the 20th century who were dismissed, ignored, or never asked for their point of view. As Kathleen McGowan, author of The Magdalene Line series said, “History is not what happened but what is written down” Leslie Zemeckis is literally changing history, by writing down the stories of powerful, unique women whose stories otherwise may have been lost to history Additionally, Leslie is also using her power and passion to elevate the stories being told on social media. To combat the onslaught of negativity on social media today, she created an EMPOWERMENT CHALLENGE to spread love and positivity. Her challenge is to post something once a week about someone else, an artist, friend, philanthropist, whomever, who is making the world better (in big ways and small) who needs a light shone on them. Why? So together we can empower others and rise higher and so we can start telling and sharing the stories that really matter.Who will take me and Leslie up on this challenge? When one thinks of the Old West in America, cowboys and Native Americans, along with all varieties of gunslingers from sheriffs to outlaws come to mind. It was a time when a man could die in the streets with his boots on or at the poker table holding the Dead Man's Hand: a pair of aces and a pair of eights, all black. Cimarron, New Mexico was in the middle of all this and the St. James Hotel built there in 1872, exudes the faded Wild West. This was a wild town that played host to a veritable who's who of old west gunmen, lawmen, gangs and famous performers like Buffalo Bill Cody. The hotel itself was witness to at least twenty-six deaths. And now the hotel seems to be playing host to spirits. The hotel is reputed to be quite haunted with at least seven identified spirits. Our listener Richard Cutshall has stayed there and hunted for some of those ghosts. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of the St. James Hotel! She went on to star in "Les Miserables" and "Sunset Boulevard" before landing the star-making role of Violet Hilton in 1997's "Side Show." After performing roles in "James Joyce's the Dead" and "The Rocky Horror Show," she won her second role of a lifetime as Dianna in 2009's "Next To Normal"--a role for which she won a Tony Award. A musical that spent just a few months on Broadway in 1997 has been re-tooled and returned to the Great White Way. Side Show is based on the lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins born in Britain in 1908, who became famous on the vaudeville and sideshow circuit there and in the United States in the 1930s. The new production is directed by film veteran Bill Condon (“Gods & Monsters” and “Dreamgirls”). Erin Davie and Emily Padgett star as Violet and Daisy, respectively. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood had a front row seat at the St. James Theatre for Side Show, and lets us in on the musical’s new angles.
