In the heart of Lancaster, a cultural renaissance is underway, thanks to the visionary leadership of Mitch Nugent. A luminary in the world of professional theatre, Nugent has dedicated his life to curating extraordinary experiences that enrich lives through vibrant cultural encounters. His illustrious career, marked by directing, performing, and producing for audiences exceeding 4 million, has taken a new dimension with the establishment of Prima, a non-profit organization co-founded by Mitch and his wife Diana in 2010. Prima, initially a nomadic troupe, has evolved into a thriving institution with its own home as of 2018. What sets Mitch apart is not just his theatrical prowess but his commitment to transforming the cultural landscape of Lancaster. In a remarkable move, he spearheaded a multi-million dollar capital campaign that redefined the city's cultural narrative, establishing a venue that aspires to be the epitome of excitement and welcome within the region. One of the striking aspects of Prima's success is the demographics of its audience. With an average attendee age of 45, Prima has managed to attract a crowd that is about 20 years younger than the national average. This achievement speaks volumes about Mitch's forward-thinking approach, which embraces diversity and nurtures emerging talent. Prima has become a beacon of inclusivity, drawing in audiences with its dynamic programming that transcends generational boundaries. Mitch's strategic vision is further exemplified by Prima's impressive roster of performers. The organization has welcomed esteemed Broadway artists such as Stephen Schwartz, Billy Porter, Shoshana Bean, Adam Pascal, and Alice Ripley. These luminaries, under Mitch's guidance, have graced Lancaster with unforgettable performances, adding to the city's cultural richness. The excitement doesn't end there. Mitch Nugent is set to captivate audiences once again with Prima's upcoming act, "Off The Yellow Brick Road," premiering in February. This world-premiere theatrical experience invites the audience to step into Dorothy's world as she embarks on a thrilling new adventure. What sets this production apart is its modern pop concert makeover of the timeless Oz tale, featuring contemporary songs from the past few decades. Mitch's ability to blend tradition with innovation is evident in this ambitious project, promising an unforgettable experience for attendees. Mitch Nugent's transformative impact on Lancaster's cultural scene is undeniable. Through Prima, he has not only provided a home for the arts but has also created a space that transcends age and welcomes diversity. As Mitch joins us on The Spark today to discuss "Off The Yellow Brick Road," it's evident that his commitment to curating extraordinary experiences continues to shape the cultural landscape of Lancaster, leaving an indelible mark on the city's artistic legacy.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

00h 00'00" Presentación 00h 03'22" Cabecera 00h 04'29" Inicio 00h 05'40" Prelude - It's just another day 00h 10'18" Everything else 00h 13'10" Who's crazy? - My Pyschopharmacologist and I 00h 18'45" Perfect for you 00h 21'17" I miss the mountains 00h 25'18" It's gonna be good 00h 27'10" He's not here 00h 29'05" You don't know - I am the one 00h 34'25" Superboy and invisible girl 00h 37'46" I'm alive 00h 41'57" Make up your mind - Catch me I'm falling 00h 46'31" I dreamed a dance - There's a world 00h 51'10" I've been 00h 54'10" Didn't I see this movie? 00h 56'02" A light in the dark 00h 59'24" Wish I were here 01h 03'22" Song of forgetting 01h 07'02" Hey #1 01h 11'02" Seconds and years - Better than before - Aftershocks 01h 18'12" Hey #2 01h 20'00" You don't know (Reprise) 01h 22'17" How could I ever forget? 01h 25'26" It's gonna be good (Reprise) 01h 26'56" Why stay? - A promise - I’m alive - The break - 01h 32'07" Make up your mind - Catch me I'm falling 01h 34'36" Maybe 01h 38'56" Hey #3 - Perfect for you (Reprise) 01h 41'41" So anyway 01h 45'24" I am the one 01h 48'53" Light 01h 53'10" Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 54'50" Feeling electric 01h 58'12" More and more and more 02h 03'27" Growing unestable 02h 06'07" Agradecimientos y despedida 02h 06'59" The windmills of your mind

#41 - PennyWild: An Artist's Guilt

“It's not going to be perfect, but nothing is perfect. The hardest thing about making music is finishing music.” How does the multi-hyphenate differ from coast to coast? On this episode of Dear Multi-Hyphenate, dj-choreographer-producer-performer, wasn't originally drawn to the word multi-hyphenate or “Renaissance Woman”. But in 2021, Penny Wildman, who also goes by PENNYWILD, resonates with the phrase as she no longer waits for permission to tackle her avenues.  Are we in a new era of Artist's Guilt and has it flipped on its head? Where an Artist's Guilt is usually born out of an artist feeling they aren't creating enough… in a response to a pandemic, is it the guilt now is a response to creating too much, especially in a world where so many people are less inspired to create.  PennyWild is always finding the balance in, you guessed it, social media - especially TikTok. The app can change lives, but is the Russian Roulette gamble worth it? What does growth actually look like and how can we get from point A to point B. Like PennyWild says, sometimes we are just flying by the seat of our pants. Sometimes it just takes ONE moment to hit us in the “pleasure center” to disenroll from our college courses and switch gears. People may think it's weird, but when we find paths for artistic opportunities - it can create a beautiful orb of work. It may not make sense on paper, but it's a beautiful thing. “Nothing in life is black and white. It's all very nuanced. It's all very complicated and that really checks out with this year.” Penny Wildman is a Music Producer, DJ, Director, and Choreographer living in Los Angeles by way of New York City. She has choreographed/directed for the likes of Zedd, Rich The Kid, Laidback Luke, Enrique Iglesias, Marian Hill, Weird Al, Gucci Mane, amongst others. Theatrical Choreography credits include Ryan Murphy's FEUD: Bette & Joan (FX), ANNIE at The Hollywood Bowl (Associate), Merrily… at The Wallis Theatre (Associate), The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Boston Conservatory, Little Miss Fix-It at PACE University, etc.  As PENNYWILD, she has performed at globally renowned music festivals such as Coachella, SXSW, Lightning in a Bottle, BUKU Arts Festival, HARD Summer etc. She released her 1st single on Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records, followed by her debut EP on Dome of Doom Records in October 2020. Her sophomore EP will be released Summer 2021.  Penny appeared on London's prestigious West End in the iconic Broadway musical West Side Story and toured with the production throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. It’s been quite a journey. Holly and Chris look back at their Carrie adventure and try and answer some burning questions.  We ask an expert, author of ‘Flop Musicals of the Twentieth Century’ Stephen Purdy, if Carrie really can be defined as a flop compared to some prominent recent mega-failures. We also find out from writer Peter Michael Marino, creator of the doomed ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ musical, what it’s like to have your new musical trashed (FYI: we saw it twice and had a great time), plus the legendary Alice Ripley also shares her experiences of being in well-loved musicals which were hit by premature closure, like ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Side Show’.  And finally - a post mortem. Where did it go wrong? Who was to blame? Could Carrie have been fixed? Can you even do horror on stage? Can we just do this as a job forever?  Plus, we leave the last word to our gang of original cast members to tell us how this funny little musical changed their lives forever. With an epic standing ovation on closing night, and urban legends already forming about its turbulent journey to the stage, Carrie the Musical had become an instant cult classic. If you’d missed Carrie’s all-too-brief run on Broadway, you just weren’t ‘in’. But the show was over and - like most flops - it should have slowly faded into oblivion. But, it didn’t. We track down the army of fans determined to keep Carrie alive in the ‘wilderness years’ that followed. We uncover the surprising truth about exactly where those bootleg videos came from, and hear from Tony-nominated composer Joe Iconis (‘Be More Chill’) about his teenage Carrie addiction - including a terrifying phone call from a familiar name. We also meet David Cerda, creator of drag parody ‘S’Carrie the Musical’, and talk to the people who threw caution to the wind and mounted unauthorised productions of the musical everybody thought was dead and buried. Artist Karen Steinkraus, of The Victorian Witch Hat, uses her experience in theater costume design to create one-of-a kind, jaw-dropping witch hats.  Karen started by creating big Victorian hats for theater plays like “Hello Dolly.” She discovered it was a joy to make them. A group of women wearing crazy witch hats for a girls’ night out inspired her to start creating them for use outside the theater.   Karen sews without patterns. This skill commenced in childhood when she learned to make her own Barbie clothes.  In addition to sewing, Karen creates using a variety of skills including weaving, sculpting, and painting.   She is enchanted with Victorian handiwork. She loves to stash antiques to put on her hats, using items like jet, feathers, taxidermy, and jewelry. She creates three kinds of hats: typical Halloween, pretty, and authentic hats with antiques/taxidermy. She offers full and fascinator sized hats. The signature of her hats is the ruched style and the curly stems. The ruching alone takes 4-6 hours to do.  Karen enjoys doing taxidermy mice. She makes her own body forms out of cotton and sculpts the tails. All of her mice are ethically sourced. While taxidermy is not for everyone, they are her best sellers. She lives near a forest and enjoys finding things like plants and animal bones for her hats. She recommends checking out the work of Polly Morgan and Walter Potter.  Collectors will often send her things that are precious to them to include in a hat. One of her most exciting commissions was for a college professor who wanted a witch hat to wear to commencement. She also created a beautiful starry hat for Tony Award winner, Alice Ripley. She said, “if you have it in your head, I can probably make it for you.”   Her hats have gone all over the world including a theater in Paris. It is fun for her to be in an audience and see her creations in action on the actors and actresses on stage. Many of her hats have been worn at the Salem Witches’ Halloween Ball.   Karen participates in art shows throughout her home state of Michigan, including Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween. Her goal is to start doing more shows around the United States. She loves being the Halloween artist at regular shows.   Find her elegant witch hats at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheVictorianWitchHat  Find the podcast web site at: https://www.halloweenartandtravel.com/

Alice Ripley is one of the heavyweights of American Musical Theatre. A Tony winner for her star-turn as Diana in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical “Next to Normal,” Alice Ripley is known world-wide for showstopping roles, including those in Side Show (for which she was also Tony nominated, alongside Emily Skinner), The Rocky Horror Show, The Who’s Tommy, Les Miserables, James Joyce’s The Dead, Sunset Boulevard, and American Psycho. She is here today promoting a one-woman monologue show, "The Pink Unicorn," at The Cell, a 60-seat venue in Chelsea. In “The Pink Unicorn,” from Out of the Box Theatrics, Alice plays Trisha Lee, a Christian widow in Texas whose world is shaken when her 14-year-old child, Jolene, announces that they are not in fact female but instead genderqueer, changing their name to Jo, launching a Gay/Straight alliance, and introducing their mom to the concept of gender-neutral pronouns. Trisha is totally thrown for a loop, hurled out of her comfort zone — and the show takes all of us though the complex journey of navigating the conservative community as well as her own biases, and the challenges of loving and accepting a child who defies expectations in service of being themselves. To quote Hunter Bell & Jeff Bowen’s quirky, brilliant musical [title of show]: ALICE RIPLEY, SHE’S FIERCE!

Moral of the story, when Scott Ripley warns you about something, take it serious. Alice Ripley had a reputation even before she set foot in West Carrollton High School for the very first time. Her proud older brother and stepsister had already warned everyone about the incoming junior. “(They said,) she’s going to get the lead in the musical so everybody get ready. My brother (Scott) told all of his friends and they were just rolling their eyes,” Alice, the high school’ first female pirate mascot, told “What Had Happened Was” podcast host Amelia Robinson. WINNING THEM OVER Now a Tony Award winner and multiple award nominee famous for her roles in “Next to Normal” and “Side Show,” Alice told Amelia that she managed to not only win the role, but to win over her classmates. She also won over the TEDxDayton organizers and will take stage this week at the annual sold out event. Amelia and Alice talk about motherhood, Alice’s 10 siblings, what it really takes to be a successful actress, how Meryl Streep helped Alice get through a very tough time in her life, why Alice stopped being friends and how yoga can stop you from going off.

Episode #14: Well, it was only a matter of time before I dragged my friend Emily Skinner onto this podcast. Emily has all my favorite actor-ingredients: a boundless and beautiful voice, a major sense of humor, fearlessness, creativity, intelligence, and above all, a ton of heart. She's given some of the most memorable performances on Broadway in recent years: Vicki in The Full Monty, Mary Jane in The Dead, Kitty in Lincon Center's production of Dinner at Eight, and of course, as Siamese twin, Daisy Hilton, in Side Show, a performance which earned her a Tony nomination for Best Actress. This doesn't even touch on her appearances Off-Broadway, at the Kennedy Center, in the Encores Series productions, and at various regional theatres across the land. And she always manages to deliver a show-stopping or heart-breaking or gut-busting or all-of-the-above performance. I'm so excited to feature her on this podcast singing "The Philosopher,", my setting of the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem of the same name. Recorded 3/14/06.Need more Emily Skinner in your diet? Go see her at the 92nd Street Y from April 8-10 in the concert, Other People's Lyrics. Or take a trip to DC in June for what promises to be a great Mame, with Emily as "Gooch."Or maybe you need some CDs! There's her solo CD, Emily Skinner, there are her duet CDs with Side Show co-star, Alice Ripley: Duets and Unsuspecting Hearts, as well as performances on the following show/concert CDs: Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens, Dreamgirls in Concert, and My Life with Albertine. But wait! There's more! She directs: Broadway by the Year - 1956 on April 3, tickets at Ticketmaster. And she's narrated a book on tape! Jennifer Weiner's Goodnight, Nobody. You can listen to it as you're driving to DC to see Mame!
