POPULARITY
Weekly Web Tools ran from 2007 to 2017, and after letting the show take a nap for three years, I'm itching to occasionally talk about some cool stuff on the internet. Well after letting the show take a nap for three years, I'm going to being it back on a more regular basis (still won't be weekly). So if you see the artwork change in your favorite podcasting app, it's not a mistake. We got a new coat of paint, some new music, and after we wrap up some things on the website, we'll be back. Currently we are using *PodcastPage* ( http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/podcastpage ) to manage the podcast website.
I've been using Convertkit, but I have enough subscribers that it is now costing my $50 a month. I heard about Send Fox at App Sumo. This is a new system but is part of App Sumo (not just something they are promoting). The price as I record this is $49 for lifetime access up to 5000 subscribers. You can upgrade for $50 to get another 5000 subscribers. At the $150 you are up to 15,000 subscribers and the branding for send fox is diminished. So I purchased the package. First Impressions It is super easy to use, and you can make your own great-looking landing pages. You can make some pretty boring looking forms. The automation makes it easy to deliver lead magnets. They do integrate with Zapier, but I found it frustrating that as of now (10/2019) when using Zapier I can specify which email list to add the person to in Send Fox. Going In You Know... I knew this was a newish company. I knew they didn't integrate with any plugins, etc at this point (they are working on that). They do (naturally) integrate with Sumo king (the pop-up tool, etc). Going Forward Because I have had some nice forms on my website I'm not canceling my Convertkit yet. The minute they integrate with my tools I will ditch convertkit. Until then I just manually export and import into Send Fox and send all my emails from there. If you are brand new to email lists, this might be a perfect fit that will have you set for a very long time. My Favorite Tools From 10 Years Social Warfare Plugin - The best tool for sharing things. I love that I can specify the tweet text and the image for Facebook, Pinterest, etc. This is once I don't wince when the subscription payment comes through Convertkit - I like MailChimp, Aweber, but I switched to Convertkit last year, and I love the marketing tools that I can use and the ability to make my own landing/sales pages. Siteground Web Hosting - 10 Years ago I would've sung the praises of Hostgator, and I thought Bluehost was OK. I do not recommend them at all, and I like Siteground. Their support is so much better. I also love Godaddy support, so I created coolerwebsites.com which is my GoDaddy reseller account Divi Theme (Elegant Themes) - The most flexible WordPress theme I've used and still fairly easy to use (there is a bit of a learning curve, and you probably won't use all of its features). I DO NOT recommend Appendpipity themes. They were awesome, but from what I can tell, the lights are on but nobody is home. I am interested in checking out Thrive Themes, and Themify (very divi like) Speaking of Websites and Wordpress Management, I LOVE ManageWP and recommend it to everyone who has a WordPress site. Bonjoro Is a cool Video Email service that pays for itself every month I have someone share how cool it was that I sent them a personalized video Kit.com is a great way to bundle Amazon products. I tried Fresh Store Builder and it was OK. My favorite is EasyAzon for Amazon Tools. ( I use this on bestpodcastinggear.com/shop ) Acuity Scheduling is the best tool for Scheduling Appointments. I love that it works with Freshbooks so I can have people book consulting time, get paid upfront and have an invoice in my billing system. For Membership Websites, if you are using Wordpress I loved Digital Access Pass. If you want your membership site separate from Wordpress I love Thinkific. In regards to project management, I love todosit.com For automated Tweeting, I like Social Jukebox If I was creating an Affiliate Program, I would use iDev Affiliate For Chat on a website, I love https://www.tawk.to/ Nimble is my favorite contact management Tool Optin Monster continues to reign as the king of Pop-Ups and Opt-ins Freshdesk is a GREAT Support tool if you want a ticketing/FAQ all in one My Typos were decreased by using The World's Best Grammar Checker which is Grammarly For Webinars I use Zoom.us My favorite Affiliate Network (their new interface is AWESOME) is shareasale.com The Last Episode of This Version of Weekly Web Tools On July 28th, 2007 I started Weekly Web Tools as I was doing web design using Dreamweaver and I just started using Wordpress. I was my target audience. I was a person who wanted their websites to Get more traffic Convert When people arrive Look Good doing it Communicate better with our audience I use to run into tools all the time, there were new things happening on a regular basis, and I could find great tools from companies (not marketers) and creating the podcast was pretty easy. Fast forward 10 years later and instead of companies, tools are being launched by marketers who often would release a tool for a small period of time, and either pull the tool, go out of business, offer no support, raise their price, and in the end it was hard to find solid tools that I could recommend to you and be able to sleep at night. My last episode was the straw that broke the camel's back. I found what appeared to be a cool tool, only to find to "Companies" who appeared to have stolen the code from each other, and one didn't work (its has since been fixed). So I spent the better part of two hours trying to figure out if I liked the tool. To put it into a single question, after 10 years, I think I've found all the tools that I like, and I don't see a lot of creativity to make new tools that grab my attention. I always thought I would get more input from the audience on what tools they used, and I did from certain people, but all in all, it was a very, very low percentage. Plans For The Future I don't plan on releasing any new episodes for the rest of 2017 unless something crosses my path. I plan on rebranding the podcast to be called "Small Business Tools" and it will be moved to a "when I have something to say" schedule. I'm also shutting down the Patreon account. I could switch to a patron account, where I am paid when I put out an episode but I've decided just to close it down. Thanks to My Patrons Josh Rivers from CreativeStudio.academy Ileane Smith from www.ileanesmith.com Scott Johnson from Computer Tutor Podcast
Understand Before Being Understood About a month ago I left a comment on the Spreaker Live show, and this comment resulted in a response from the host that in a conversation he had with me was "Disproportional." So after we both hissed at each I set up a time when we could talk about this and see how we pushed each other's buttons. We did and it was a great interview. The bad news is my SD Card ran out of room, and my backup (mp3 skype recorder) didn't get it either. I could call Alex back on, but at this point, so much water is under the bridge, I thought I would just paraphrase what really happened. In my comment, there were times when I used ALL CAPS to make a point. Alex is used to dealing with comments from YouTube which are much crueler, and personal that the average podcast comment This was the first time he had been challenged on the podcast side of this content (vs the YouTube side) and it caught him off guard. He apologized for calling me a schmuck, and I explained that when he made a joke about me not having any listeners (because I don't use Spreaker), and that I wasn't up front with people about the fact that I work for Libsyn, and we chatted about that. I explained how I wasn't trying to push his buttons, and then we did something that most people miss out on. We had some cool conversation about topics we have in common. For example, Chris Cornell had just died. Neither one of use quite gets while World Trade Center Tower Number 7 went down. In the end, I look forward to meeting Alex at Podcast Movement. If I had not taken a second to step back, and wonder if there was something I DID to create such a reaction (instead of just condemning the other person) then I would've lost out on an opportunity to learn something (be careful using caps in comments), and Alex wouldn't have been able to see his reaction. Lastly, I think we both gained a new friend. So instead of being so set on proving somebody wrong, instead maybe ask, "Why did you say that?" or "What were you feeling when you said that?" and try to understand before being understood (Which is a lesson I learned from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) Seriously, How Do I Grow My Audience? Devlin Wilder posted in a Facebook Group, "Please, for the love of all that's good and pure, someone please help me WITH REAL INFO on how I get the numbers. I don't want to hear I need to have my show out for years or I need to get to 200 episodes or what not. And I've had no luck with Fiverr. I need to know the real deal" This is like saying, "I want to know about making a baby, but I don't want to hear about ovaries, sperm, or having to wait 9 months." THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS In her book Beyond Powerful Radio Radio Consultant Vallerie Geller states, "in my experience, with few exceptions it takes about three years to build a talk station." She points out that the original Star Trek Series was canceled after three seasons and it was re-runs where the audience found the show. Jerry Seinfeld has framed a memo stating that his show has a poor supporting cast, and most people who saw the test pilot would not watch it again. Gary Vaynrchuck says nobody watched his show for the first 19 months Rand Fishkin tells about his wife, Geraldine, and her travel blog, Everywhereist. For two years she never broke 100 visitors a day (she does a blog). Five years later she gets 1000,000 visitors a month. Source Success comes from feedback, and the ability to look at yourself and ask "Can I Improve This?" Growing up I had a basketball hoop in my backyard. Every time I shot a basket and it bounced off the rim and back at me.... that was feedback. I watched Kareem Abdul Jabar and his sky hooks shot. It was unblockable. I practiced my skyhook over and over and over. Eventually, I could shoot it with my eyes shut. That took time. If you want to quit your job in six weeks, I would recommend that you not even start podcasting. This is like someone wanting to lose 40 pounds in six weeks. You soon learn that six weeks is not that long, and 40 pound is not that small. The Answer is There is No Answer There are so many factors that play into this Are you working full time? What market are you in and how crowded is it? How unique are you? Your Web Design It's Not Who You Know, It's Who Knows You Podcast Movement is coming up in August, and DC Podfest is coming up in November. I will be at Podcast Movement, and I plan on being in DC Podfest. Do these cost lots of money? Just the travel alone can be expensive based on your budget. That is the key, what is your budget? If you don't have the budget, don't be stupid, don't go. I'm saving money as we speak for Social Media marketing world. I have to plan. I have to put money in my budget. If you have a family with a spouse and kids, don't be stupid. Is It Worth Going to An Event? I have a podcast group for people in Northeast Ohio. I rarely get more than five people in attendance. One of those people (Matt from theauthorinsideyou.com) helped get me on a local TV show. I met Gary Leland, Paul Colligan, and Rob Walch at one of the fire New Media Expos. Rob was the person I called when I found myself out of a job and looking to work in the podcasting industry (I now work for Libsyn). I met Ken Blanchard at an event and I haven't stopped laughing yet. I met Jared Easley and Dan Franks at the New Media Show. Later they would start Podcast Movement and I've been blessed to say I've spoken at every single one in one capacity or another. I met Eri kK Johnson and came up with the idea of adding him to the Podcast Review show at an event. I met Mike Russel of Music Radio Creative at the New Media Show I met Glenn The Geek At Podcast Movement. Glen got me involved with Chris Krimitsos and I was able to speak at Podfest.us That lead to me helping with the Messengers Podcast about their documentary. That lead to me being the closing keynote at podfest.us this year. One person, one contact. Last year I met a whole bunch of people at DC Podfest including Matthew from Podtopod.com. Most of those I paid for (events post-2016 I typically can expense out). When I was a musician, I once drove four hours after getting off work at 8 PM to drive to Cincinnati and hangout with a bunch of indie musicians for three hours before turning around and driving home (I was probably 20). One of the relationships I start at that meeting was a guy who went to another event and learned about podcasting. Whooshkaa Free Media Hosting For those who are new to me reviewing media hosting, I have some criteria. 1. Don't mess with my file. What I upload is what I want people to download. 2. Give me the ability to have an unlimited back catalog (unlimited storage) 3. Don't limit my audience size (unlimited bandwidth) 4. Don't control my feed, and make it easy to leave if I choose to do so. I need to be able to put in an iTunes redirect script. 5. Give me support. 6. Charge me for your service so you can stay in business 7. Give me stats so I can see what's working. It would be nice if they were accurate Whooshkaa is doing something that has been tried by audiometric.io and before them podango.com. This is where you give free hosting so you can see advertising on the podcast. Do Whooshkaa meet my criteria? No, but there is an asterisk. They mess with your file (as they put code into the mp3 file to alert when to play an advertisement), so they keep most of your ID3 tags, but they ditch you image (so if someone downloads your show to their computer and plays it, the dreaded gray music note of death appears on a windows machine). They also change your file name. They don't change your file format, but by nature, they HAVE to change your file to stay in business. Their support was quick and very helpful. Their stats are very similar to what everyone else provides (number of downloads, geographic, operating system, the technology used, etc). They do offer how long someone has listened. Unless they have cracked a new code, this is typically a wasted stat. The only way they can get that information is if you are using their player. To this, I point out that over 80% of podcasts are listened to on a mobile device (so this stat is kind of a "Corinthian leather" feature, sounds good, but in the end not that accurate). They have a built in "Clammr" feature, called highlights. Clammr.com is the first service that allows you to make snippets of a show and share it on social media. With Clammr you can share a snippet of the show and when they click on the snippet they are taken to a place where they can listen to the rest of the episode. You can see how many people listened to your "Highlight." For me, I thought the design could be adjusted to make it go from easy to SUPER EASY to hear the rest of the podcast. They do have a weird "Sign up for our newsletter" when you send people to an episode on Whooshkaa. The problem is that for the Whooshkaa email list (not yours). Getting Paid As the code in the mp3 file has the word "Triton" I'm guessing that they are using Triton for their advertisements. This means that podcasters can probably expect 1 to 2 cents per download. So if I had my Weekly Web Tools on their platform I might make $12 for the month (at 1200 downloads a month). That is if you are lucky enough to have advertising. When I enquired about their CPA, they responded, "We don't have any information on the CPA for ads. We generally only work with our larger podcasters/media companies for ad injection." When I wanted to know how many downloads you need to get a sponsor, a support person lets me know, "Generally more than 10k per month before we approach a podcaster for ads. Some of our current partners monetising include News Corp, Fox Sports, Sky News, Bauer and a few large Australian Sporting organizations. When I pointed out to them that others had tried this model, they responded, "We support the podcast ecosystem with free hosting, while making ad revenue from the top 5%. At the end of the day, the cost of hosting a podcast with small downloads is negligible. We hope that some of the smaller podcasters turn out to be the next Ira Glass or Alex Blumberg :) It's super easy to pick a spot where you want your advertising to be placed. By default, they want to add three advertisers (I chose one). I believe you will be contacted when you reach certain milestones for advertising as there is nothing in the dashboard (that I can find, and nothing in their help section) about getting paid (i.e paypal, direct deposit). Conclusion Call me weird, but building your podcast on a host that doesn't charge is risky business (again, podango, audiometric.io) but if you're in a boat and have zero budget (they do redirect feeds if you want to leave) then I would recommend Whooshkaa over another free service Pinecast if you're looking for a free service with all the trimmings. If you asked me which one will be in business in five years between Pinecast and Whooshkaa, I would put my money on Pinecast as their free service motivates you to upgrade to their paid service. With Whooshkaa they are hoping that people with 10,000 downloads per episode take their advertising, and don't leave for another host. I notice in their terms of service it states, "If you are a Commercial User/Channel Partner, this may be altered by any specific agreements we hold with you." Today shares his thought on Podcamp Pittsburgh, the death of blab.im, and what geese, Ringo Star, and Michael Phelps can teach podcasters. Comments 888-563-3228 The Messengers Are Coming! If you live within driving distance of Akron, Ohio you might want to make a trip this Saturday the 20th of August as the Film Crew of The Messengers (a documentary about podcasting) will be joining our Northeast Ohio Podcasters Meetup group from 3-4:30. They are going to share their story, some cool footage, and film out meeting as well. For more information go to www.neohiopodcasters.com If you haven't heard the behind the scenes podcast about the making of the movie, check out www.themessengersdoc.com/podcast Here is a recent write up about the podcast and movie (and it's not done yet). Attention Podcasters' Hangout Family... I'd like to take a moment and recognize Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting for spending what has to be an ENORMOUS amount of time editing and producing a podcast that highlights "behind the scenes" for an upcoming film called The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary. The film is the brainchild of Executive Producer Chris Krimitsos and I also serve as Executive Producer myself. This film has taken us and the crew - Director , D.P. Willie L. Harper, and Lead Film Editor Saulo Zayas - literally into other countries to highlight the stories of how podcasters have used this medium to make a MAJOR impact in their communities and/or through their audience. This episode chronicles the back-story of our experience flying down to Guatemala to support and film mobile podcaster Shawn Smith's Now Is The Time Mission, where the organization serves villages living in extreme poverty through building and installing high efficiency stoves, laying down concrete floors inside homes, donating *tremendous* amounts of clothing, school supplies and other goods as well as lead a daily VBS program for all the kids of the villages they serve in... Shawn has been doing this every single year for over TEN years. At the end of each day, Shawn sits down to interview the volunteers about their experience and as you can imagine, these conversations get raw and emotional. These podcast episodes are then uploaded and shared with loved ones back home. This episode of our podcast for The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary highlights this trip and some our own experiences -- and emotions. I hope you take the time to listen to it and enjoy it, and also enjoy the level of production podcasting PRO Dave Jackson has poured into this. Thanks Dave, you are freaking amazingly talented. Join the email list and get access to behind the scenes footage by going to www.themessengersdoc.com Podcamp Pittsburgh In a slide show of the previous 11 years of Podcamp Pittsburgh, you could see where this event was well attended in the past. This year they had approximately 50 people. NOW HOLD ON, before you judging things just by numbers. For me, my goal is to find individuals who want to launch a podcast. I started off my opening keynote speech asking the intimate crowd how many of them already had podcasts. Very few hands went up. When I asked how many people didn't have a podcast yet, TONS of hands went up. So while this was an intimate group, it was a perfect group for me. So judging things by numbers only goes back to people looking at producers who love to share their huge numbers. They might think, "I wish I had those numbers" but what you don't know is how engaged that audience is. While there is no spam in podcasting, some people may not be that engaged with the host. For example, I get very little interaction from my Weekly Web Tools podcast. I love the show, and I love my listeners, but it's a fact that my School of Podcasting Audience is more engaged than the Weekly Web Tools audience. As always I go to events to network with some folks, Saturday night I got to meet some very cool people. I also got to hang out with some of my awesome Libsyn people (Elsie Escobar from Shepodcasts.com and Krystal O'Connor the mind and voice behind all the libsyn tutorials. Sometimes Different is Better Than Better In talking with someone at Podcamp Pittsburgh, they asked how not to sound monotonous. The person explained how they did a show where they asked the same questions to each guest. Now I could be wrong, but my knee-jerk reaction was to think that this person might be trying to follow in the steps of John Lee Dumas (who wouldn't? He makes millions of dollars with his podcast), but (and I've said this before) you will never out "John Lee Dumas the actual John Lee Dumas." You see, it comes to him naturally. I live in an apartment complex with a few lakes. Because of the lakes and the lovely surroundings, we have hundreds of geese. I see them all the time as I walk around my neighborhood getting some exercise. Last week I saw a goose where it looked like they ran out of black paint when they were painting his head. Typically a goose's head is black, with some white coming up from their neck. This goose looked like his head was white, and someone had sprinkled some black on his head (instead of the other way around). I don't know if the geese do this on purpose, but this goose is also separated from the rest of the geese by about 10 feet. When I ran into tonight, they were all by the lake; he was 30 feet away walking down the sidewalk. Now I see these geese every day. They all look identical. I could see the same goose day after day, and I wouldn't know it because they all look the same. That goose with the different paint job may be thinking to itself, "I wish I had more black on my head. I don't look like the other geese. I'm ugly. I stand out. " My point is because this goose is different and it DOES stand out. Embrace your uniqueness. There may another goose in that flock that can fly better, honk louder, and swim faster and I would never know because it looks like all the other geese. I do not notice them. Sure they may be "better" geese, but I don't remember them. The goose with the different paint job I will remember. I have one more example. Ringo Starr is probably one of the most famous drummers of all time. He has a specific style. These are due to a couple of things. One, he was born left handed but his Grandmother "made him" right handed. He still plays the drums with his primarily with his left hand. Meanwhile he plays drums that are designed for a right handed person. He also plays (as he describes it) with his "shoulders" and this often causes his snare drum to be just a shade late on hitting the beat. Many people say they can tell when he is behind the drums because his "wrong" style of playing delivers a unique style. In Ringo's case, different is better. So you may be thinking, I'm not like the other podcasters. I can't publish a daily show, I don't have a Heil PR40, I can't, I don't, etc. To this I say, It's not the tech. If you have nothing to say but have a great microphone, it won't matter. For the record, when John started HE looked DIFFERENT. Nobody had done a daily show for entrepreneurs. Michael Phelps Competition I didn't watch much of the Rio Olympics, but what I saw was very inspirational. Michael Phelps is the best swimmer of all time. The media was preparing for his final swim meets, and they were talking about who he would be up against. Different athletes were coming from different countries with different ages and speeds. These were Michael's competition. This was when I thought about swimming. It's not like his competition is in his lane blocking him from swimming. They weren't going to be grabbing his arms, or legs. The only person Michael Phelps had to beat was Michael Phelps. Podcasting is very much the same way. You are only as good as you last episode (for the most part), and we shouldn't shouldn't measure ourselves against other podcasters. We never have the full story, of what is going on behind the scenes of someone's podcast success. Obsessing over other podcaster's success takes your focus off your audience. Blab.im is Dead Here are some comments from their farewell letter We took a hackathon project that we built in 3 weeks and grew it from 0 users to → 3.9 million users in less than one year. The average daily user spent over 65 minutes per day on Blab The problem? According to their farewell letter, "Of the 3.9 million total users, only 10% (~400,000) came back on a regular basis." This is really stupid part of this statement is they provided a download link to the audio and video. People then took these files and put them on YouTube, and their Media hosts like Libsyn (use the promo code sopfree to get a free month). They also said, "Because the off-the-cuff, unpredictable nature of live streams make for terrible replays." You mean average untrained people are not masters of improv entertainment? They said, "But the majority of usage came from everyday people “just hanging out”. They weren’t making content; they were making friends." The best ‘content creators’ used it ~once a week, for ~2 hours. The people who were hanging out with friends used it 5–6 hours per day, every day. My team is here for one reason. To build a product that millions of people will use everyday. Another classic line which I respect is "For us; we would rather fail to try to achieve our mission than succeed at someone else’s mission." Here is another example of someone shooting for perfection (a life changing social network like Facebook), they missed the mark, and ended up on pretty good. Well, that wasn't their goal. To that, I can say I understand, but people hanging out and making friends will be much harder to monetize. Because of My Podcast: I'm Getting Married Today Matthew Cox from Brunch with the Brits explains how he went to a podcast event who eventually became his wife. Why I Turned Down My First Podcast Sponsor I had been contacted by a sponsor at advertisecast.com. I decided to low ball my pricing ($10 an episode) just to see if anyone would jump. An advertiser did. They wanted 10 episodes of my Weekly Web Tools podcast. That would be almost three months and the advertising would pay for my hosting (minus the 20% that advertisecast take). I would take home $96. My hosting will cost me $45 for three months. I might have some gas money. Here are some of the bullet points: To get started and receive a $50 signup bonus You’ll earn $1 for every new email lead and up to $200 for every new member you refer from your computer Has already generated millions of dollars for over 200,000 happy entrepreneurs My audience is predominant male, and I know I have some entrepreneurs in my audience. So far this sounds like a great fit. Then I went to see what I was promoting. It turns out the product was a video chat and dating service. Hmmm, that doesn't really fit, but maybe I would do this as an experiment. Then I dug a little deeper. You see this wasn't some ordinary video chat/dating service. It was porn, oh I wait I mean adult chat. Can we just call it what it is? Porn. Beside my religious beliefs there are lots of non-religious reasons that porn is a cancer that most people feel is "not a problem." Well I disagree. It's an opinion, and we're not here to talk about that. Let's get back to podcasting. I will not have a sponsor on my show that I can't go to bed at night feeling I served my audience by sending them toward a product I fully endorse. So I turned them down. I also contacted advertisecasts.com and suggested they put in a way for podcasters to save people time so I can say, "No porn, cigarette, alcohol, etc) Every podcasters starts with two things in common. Zero listeners, and they have integrity. When you lose your integrity, you may not ever get it back. Don't Be Afraid To Start Your Podcast and Find Your Voice When I started college I thought I wanted to "Fix stuff" so I went to an electronics school and got a degree in electronic engineering. The other thing I got was a clear understanding that I wasn't very good at fixing stuff. I fixed copiers, but luckily got an opportunity (based on relationships I had formed in the company) to go out and set up the equipment and train the users. I was a customer service rep. Had I not gone to college to be a technician, I never would've ended up in training. I later would go back to School to get a Bachelor's Degree in Education. My dream job was to get back to training people on Microsoft Products. I had the most fun doing that in the past, and I was good at it. I could be funny and educational. Because of my knowledge of computers I start to dabble in building websites, and the Internet. That lead to me a guy who had come back from a conference who told me about podcasting. I started podcasting, and got to know people in the industry. Using my strongest skills of serving and teaching, I created value. I developed relationships with all of the podcasting companies. I remember one day about a year and a half ago when a student asked me a question about combining two features in Microsoft Excel. I explained I had never tried those two features together, to which he pulled out his iPhone and asked Siri. Right in front of my eyes, the phone solved my customers problem. I thought, I'm going to be replaced by a phone. A year and a half later what was once a staff of five trainers, what cut down to one (and it wasn't me). However, because I had been playing with computers, and playing with the Internet, that lead me to podcasting. Those relationships I built over ten years lead me to being employed by Libsyn.com (A podcast media company). Now I would never have though my life would turn out the way it has. Anything that put me into position to help me later began by starting something. Knowledge is only power when you act on it. Richard Prior is considered by some to the THE best comedian ever. Richard launched his career being very safe, and incorporating a lot of physical comedy in his routines. He was basically trying to be Bill Cosby. There was only one problem. He was Richard Prior and being Bill Cosby-ish was not easy, and eventually Richard walked off the stage mid-performance cause he couldn't do it anymore. But he wouldn't have known that if he hadn't started stand up. You can manage, pivot, adjust, something that you never start. I Want My Podcast to Be Original It's hard to really come up with something completely original. Why? Because talking and entertainment and education have been around for a long time. In the movies most plots can be summarized by one of seven plot lines. Overcoming Monsters - Dracula Rags to Riches - Cinderella The Quest - Lord of the Rings Voyage and Return - Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz Comedy - Four Weddings and A Funeral Tragedy - Breaking bad Rebirth - The Grinch who stole Christmas Source Create an Original Combination As I write this, the musician Prince died last Thursday. Some might say there was nobody like Prince, and that is true. What was original about Prince was his mixing of Genres and styles. If you ever saw him live, he borrowed a lot from James Brown. If you watched him play the guitar, he reminded you a lot if Jimi Hendrix. There was a hint of gospel an blues. What Prince had that was unique to him was his vocal range. He took that range and surrounded with the stylings of James, Jimi, and his own influences. So the way he paired these genres was original. Learn From Others Who Are Doing it Well I've spoken in the past about grabbing people's attention right up front. One of the longest running shows on television does this the best: 60 minutes. They pull at your heart making it near impossible to turn off the channel. Can you incorporate this into your podcast? You sure can. Podcast News: Google (Yawn) Play What should have been a tidal wave of opportunity was a drop of technology as Google Play Music was "Launched" kind of. Here is what's missing: 70% of podcasts are listened on a portable device but Google is using Flash technology which dosn't work on mobile devices. You can't download the podcasts. It's not really available anywhere except on the web The good news is starting today (28th) you will be able to have more stats to obsess over. HOORAY! Music MTV Is Getting into Podcasting MTV announced five new podcasts focused on film, politics, pop culture and, obviously, music that will roll out over the next week. The shows will be hosted by a mix of current MTV News journalists including Anna Marie Cox and several new hires. For MTV, the move into podcasting shows how it’s targeting young people who are staring at their phones, rather than the television. Dan Fierman, MTV News’ editorial director, told Digiday that of its young target audience, 80 percent of all content they consume is on their phones and that the audience has been underserved with podcast options. BTW, I have a new favorite podcast because of your “favorite podcast” episode at year end. Never heard of No Agenda until I heard someone mention it on your end year end show, actually it was last years show i listened to after downloading the transcript. I know shame on me for being a podcaster and not knowing of Adam Curry’s show until recently, but I have not missed an episode since hearing about it earlier this year and have also sent a few dollars their way. ? it’s exceptionally good given the upcoming presidential election. Today we are JLD and Blab Free (things we keep talking about each week - We love them both, but we are mixing in some new stuff). Blab Purchases PodClearDave had some issues using Podclear in the past. We are assuming its the coding that was purchased. Podclear was saying they could have up to 9 people at the same time and you would get 9 separate files and one combined. This should be interesting. It is nice that this might put some pressure on Google Hangouts. At this point, podclear is shut down. We are all in "wait and see mode." Podcast App Still Not Working... 7:10 We are really surprised that the new version of the Apple Podcasts App is still not working.... We all agree Overcast is a great alternative. The way it syncs across different phone/iPad. When You Live at 100% 11:15 Life is tough when you live at your peak performance. There is no room for life to throw you any curve balls. When you are in this type of situation everything has to go right. Dave spoke at a local group on Thursday and it backed up his entire week. Cut out things that do not move you toward your goals. Keep everything organized so you don't spend time looking for stuff. Jim does a monthly check of all his systems. It might be more expensive as you need things to work right the first time. Dave explains how he will not unplug his recorder any more. He will use his second recorder. Resist the urge to set a second podcast. Dave explains how he might be featured on the Local News for International Podcast Day. 19:45 Camera Adapters and the ATR2100 The Camera Kit from Apple allows you to plug the microphone in via USB and right into you iPad or iPhone Social Media Tools 21:19 Kim from onthetablepodcasts.com wants to know what we are using for Social Media. ww.bufferapp.com www.teriod.com Clammr.com Tweetjukebox.com Socialbro.com crowdfireapp.com Cutting Back On Your Shows 28:49 Dave talks about how its getting harder to find content for his Weekly Web Tools podcast and he is contemplating shutting it down. Hosting Suggestions? 32:09 Kim is having issues with Hostgator (which Dave loves their service, you can save 25% using the coupon podcastcoach a www.schoolofpodcasting.com/hosting ) Kim is releasing a podcast with a certain amount of episodes and then it will stop. Should I release them all at once? Dave feel you should roll them out over time. There is no way that everyone will go back and listen to every episode and with that in mind - episode 1 gets ignored. As Kim knows what will be in the next episode she can tease next week's show at the end of each episode. This is a tip from the Podcast Talent Coach show. Intro and Outro Music 39:21 You can get professional intros created at Music Radio Creative. You want the music to fit the content and/or the host. You can find music at Audio Jungle and make your own. Don't use illegal music. Jim has contacted local musicians to have music crated. What About a Daily Show? 42:39 The bottom line to any schedule is bringing value. You can publish at whatever schedule you want. Getting Behind in Listening 45:10 Keep in mind not everyone can keep up with that show, they feel guilty, and the unsubscribe. As long as the show delivers value, I will listen if I'm weeks behind. The Old Salesmen Trick 48:30 Which one works better for you? This can be helpful when trying to schedule an interview. You offer multiple days. This helps get "none" off the table. Dave uses Appointlet . Another free option is Calendly. Whatever you use time zones can be a frequent issue. I like to have a tool that automatically reminds my guests. Launching on a Specific Day 52:30 People want to launch on International Podcast Day. Keep in mind you have no control over how long it takes to get listed in iTunes. It's best to get it into iTunes and the other directories, and then announce it on a certain day. Many musicians do this, they wait until the CD is in their hand to do a CD release program. Jim is Launching a Three Minute Podcast 53:48 Jim explains the fun of launching a new three minute show and working out the kinks. Its called the silicon prairie news minute Ready to start a podcast visit www.theschoolofpodcasting.com
I hear about this plugin on my friend Daniel's show. He spoke about social warfare plugin for Wordpress. The Social Warfare plugin unique in a few ways. It only focuses on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. (but really, do you use others?) You can dictate what image is shared on FaceBook You can completel control what is tweeted out including hastags, mentions, etc The retweet button looks awesome (pull quote) Customize the description and picture of Pinterest. The price is $24/yr for one website. I have not purchased this plugin yet, but probably will be in the future. Also, I recently moved Weekly Web Tools to BlueHost just to try them out. I'll keep you posted. For more information visit Social Warfare

Anatomy of a Story A great book that looks at some of the best presentations and breaks them down and examines WHY they worked. Why they connected with their audience. The book is called Resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences Stories are often the same layout 1. A relatable likable hero 2. The Hero encounters a roadblock(s) 3. The Hero emerges transformed. In some cases the hero was reluctant to take on the responsibility. They finally decide to take on the roadblock, you think they may not make it (but they do). Then you see them after they have made it through the storm/roadblock. Entrepreneur On Fire Questions Use Many Of These Elements I was on the Entrepreneur on Fire Podcast on episode 263, and looking at John Lee Dumas's questions they use elements of story telling 1. Intro I will give a brief intro about you and your business, and then turn it over to you to elaborate. - introduce the hero. 2. Success Quote Here you will share a success quote/mantra you enjoy & how you have applied it to your life. - transformation 3. Failure / Challenge / Obstacle What failure/challenge/obstacle have you overcome and what were the lessons learned? - roadblock. 4. The “AHA” moment Discuss an “AHA” moment you have had and how you turned that AHA into success. - transformed Have you had an “I’ve made it moment?” - transformed 5. Current Business What is one thing that is really exciting you in your business right now? - transformation 6. Lightning Round: What was holding you back from becoming an Entrepreneur? - roadblocks What is the best business advice you have ever received? - transformation What is something that is working for you right now? - roadblock Do you have an Internet resource, like Evernote, that you can share with our listeners? - insights.. What book would you recommend to Fire Nation? - insights into you, and great monetization strategy Imagine you woke up tomorrow morning in a brand new world, identical to earth, but you knew no one. You still have all the experience & knowledge you currently have, your food and shelter is taken care of, but all you have the next 7 days? - more insights into you. Behind the Scenes of a Podcast Launch - Clammrcast is Now in iTunes463 After recording a few episode I've now released Clammrcast into the public and into iTunes and Stitcher. I didn't think people would download the back catalog (three episodes) but they did. This did land me at the rank of 1150 in New and Noteworthy (subscribe, rate and review to help bump us up) You don't need to have multiple episodes to be in New and Noteworthy. You can be new only for 8 weeks, you can be noteworthy ANY TIME. (so you don't only have 8 weeks) I got 47 downloads of the first episodes, 31 downloads of episode 2, and episode 1 got 27 downloads. I will be launching a new podcast that will not be an ongoing show. I will use it answer common questions (best microphone). Slack is an interesting tool for those people who work on teams. It enables you to have all of your communication in one place. All of your items in Google Docs, Dropbox, and many other tools can be organized and made searchable with Slack. You can make a team, and then have categories (public or private so if you have different levels for team members you can have a category just for management). It's easy to sign up. For me, its kind of hard to bring team members into the fold (I can make it recognize an domain, so here again it is made for businesses - not podcasters). I was bmmered there is no way (that I could see after using it for 10 minutes) to make a page where people could go in an request to join my team (there is a tool for that it's call facebook). It turns out that Slack is from one of the co-founders of Flickr. It has been growing quickly for just being around a little over a year. The more I play with it, the more I see its potential. I do with they had more of a "step by step" video If you're interested in playing with my Weekly Web Tools team, send an email to weeklywebtools@gmail.com and put the word SLACK in the subject. After a break, we are finally opening up the second semester of the Creative Studio Academy! I will be talking about the platform for your website and some of the basic settings that are often overlooked. Before that, though... At the end of last semester, I hinted at some of the changes that would be coming. If you are new to the Academy, please go back and check out the first semester sessions. From the things I mentioned before, here is what we are looking at moving forward: Narrowing the focus for the semester. This semester, we will focus more on blogging. We will also touch on writing e-books and improving your website (especially in light of blogging). Regular blog posts. Especially since we will focus more on blogging, I will be dedicating myself to writing at least one blog post a week in addition to the podcast sessions. There may be additional posts, but nothing that I can promise now. Improved newsletter. I was thinking about going to a bi-weekly newsletter, which will include an article (not found on the website), some tips, and links to previous blog posts/podcast sessions. I will also have an e-book available that covers things that you need to get started with your website. I also hope to have another e-book that will cover how to take your website to the next level. I really want to increase the engagement that we have. I have received a few comments and several iTunes reviews, but I really want to have regular interaction. I started this site by stating that I am not the expert, but I do have experience and knowledge I can share. And so do you! Even if you don't think you have done much, there is still someone that you can help influence. I want to hear from you in the comment section, via e-mail, and now I have a voice mail number you can call right from your phone. I'd also like to schedule time to talk with you one on one. The 2015 Winter Semester Even though we are technically starting in 2014, most of this semester will fall in 2015. With our focus on blogging, I have created a mindmap of the topics that we will be trying to cover. We may not get to all of them, or we may not get deep into some of them. If you would like to download the PDF of this mindmap, you can do that here or click the image of it. Your Platform The platform for your website is important. Whether you are looking at a platform for a blog or a full-purpose website, my recommendation is a self-hosted WordPress site. We talked about WordPress several times last semester, and we were able to get some great information about it. I honestly have not used some of the others, like Joomla, Drupal, and Square Space, but based on many reviews I heard and read, WordPress brings both simplicity and power to the user. Note: While WordPress can be simple, there is still a learning curve, but much of it can be grasped in a short amount of time. Dave Jackson (School of Podcasting and Weekly Web Tools host) says that if you can use Microsoft Word, you can create a post on WordPress. This is true. But to take this analogy a little further, most people that create simple documents in Word barely scratch the surface of what the software is capable of, and it takes a little bit to learn them. Same with WordPress. When it comes to WordPress, there are two options: WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress. While these are basically the same at the core, there are some differences. I will try to have a blog post up in the near future to show these. Settings When you get WordPress installed, you get so excited about creating the content, that there are several settings that can easily get overlooked (check out this simple tutorial if you need help installing WordPress). General Settings Site title Tagline Timezone Permalinks Choose "Post Name" The post

NOTE: This technology was sold to Podango after this episode. Go to http://cms.podango.net however for the most part its been broken ever since. The great thing about podcasting is its getting big enough for companies to start building tools for podcasters. Today we look at the Audio Lite system from Gigavox (the makers of the Levelator). www.gigavox.com You can record your podcast in segements. Then (if needed) you can update certain segments (like an advertiser spot) in the current AND PAST podcasts. I'm using this not for advertisers, but for a non-profit (my church). Instead of having advertising spots rotate in and out, we use it for our calendar, and prayer concerns (items that chance from week to week). This way people are up to date with the latest news (no matter what episode they listen to). In reality your podcast can be evergreen. The information can be updated in past shows. The good news is its free to use. Take some time to think about it and how you want your podcast to go from section to section. I love it. Oh yeah. IT's FREE. The “bad” news is it doesn't work with Libsyn (it does with the more expensive Libsyn Pro). So I looked at some different web hosts that had unlimited bandwidth (like Midphase.com ) and ended up with Dreamhost.com (as they increase your storage and bandwidth the longer you stay on their system). I will keep you in the loop as we move forward.
