Kliq This: The Kevin Nash Podcast

In this episode, Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver dive deep into a mix of hot topics and classic Kevin Nash storytelling. From Warren Buffett's latest stock moves and the ups and downs of Citibank, to the real estate market's latest twist—Titan Towers is up for grabs! They also share some behind-the-scenes stories from wrestling's past, including iconic moments at the WWE headquarters and wild days on the road. Kevin and Sean discuss the current state of pro sports, including the shocking attendance numbers at Chicago White Sox games and the highs and lows of Detroit's sports scene. They reminisce about historic venues, like Tiger Stadium and The Palace, and Kevin gives his brutally honest take on why nostalgia doesn't always hold up. The conversation shifts to life's daily frustrations, with Kevin sharing hilarious, yet infuriating, stories from his recent travels and everyday encounters—from bizarre fast food drive-thrus to perplexing customer service at CVS. And if you're looking for TV recommendations (or ones to avoid), Kevin's got a brutally funny review of the Hulu show "Tell Me Lies"—a series that's as confusing as it is captivating. Oh, wow, that's beautiful. Jeralyn Glass  Or there's another tuning we talk about called 528 hertz, which is higher. In my experience, there is no one size fits all. So there's no frequency or tuning where one can say, okay, take the 528 hertz, and that's gonna heal your cancer. Jeralyn Glass  17:19 Many times people come to me with a preconceived notion, I want 432, Hertz, and then they hear it and they don't like it, right? So I think it's very important that people can experience different kinds of music, different kinds of tunings, different kinds of frequency, and then say, Wow, that feels really good.   ABOUT JERALYN GLASS: Jeralyn Glass is an internationally acclaimed singer, pioneering figure in the realm of Sound Healing, creator of The Source App, and author of Sacred Vibrations: The Transformative Power of Crystalline Sound and Music. NFL legend, Pro Football HOFer, civil rights activist and actor Jim Brown passed away last Friday. Some in the media marked his passing by shaming the sports icon over alleged abuse from years past. But Jason believes it was Jim Brown's refusal to bend to the political climate of the times that made him a target. “Jim Brown never sold out. That's his legacy. He couldn't be bought or compromised. He epitomized the kind of masculinity America now rejects as toxic.” Brown had an unrelenting set of principles and values that he lived by and that's what made him different from Muhammed Ali, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabar. “The pursuit of money eventually triggers selling out. That's what makes Jim Brown special, a man among boys.” Steve Kim joins “Fearless” to share his thoughts on Jim Brown's legacy and his place in sports history. Plus, the “Korean Cosell” and Jason discuss Colts owner JIm Irsay's list of the top 5 NFL players of all time, more specifically the legendary quarterback back NOT on Irsay's list. The Lakers are down 0-3 to the Denver Nuggets, would a sweep harm LeBron James' legacy? And, Brittney Griner made her historic and brave return to the WNBA, or at least that's the narrative ESPN wants to shill. Then, Shemeka Michelle attempts to make sense of the N.A.A.C.P. issuing a “travel advisory” for people of color, and the LGBTQ community, to boycott the state of Florida. Hey, we're back! We definitely missed you all. First, lets get all the formalities out of the way. Happy New Year, Merry Christmas etc. On this weeks episode we jumped right in and gave a huge congrats to Lebron Jones on passing Kareem Abdul Jabar and is now the NBA Leading All Time Scorer. Whether you like Lebron or not you definitely have to respect what he has accomplished and give him what he deserves. To be able to break a record that has stood in place for 39yrs is incredible and should not be taken lightly, Now that Lebron has broken the record does this make him the Greatest Of All Time? We believe that categorizing someone as the GOAT is subjective and is solely dependent on what your standards may be. Regardless this is an amazing accomplishment and should not be downplayed. Next we moved on to all of the excitement that has been taken place regarding trades. If you haven't heard, Kyrie Irving has been traded to the Dallas Mavericks and we for sure thinks this is a good luck. Kevin Durant is also leaving the Brooklyn Nets and has been traded to the Phoenix Suns. What we all thought was going to be a dominate Brooklyn Nets team on paper just never correlated in reality. However with both Kyrie and KD now being back in the West Conference, the West just got that more deadly. Looking at the way teams are currently stacked, who are you taking out of the West? Lastly, we give our predictions picks of who will win the Super Bowl this Sunday. Are you a Eagles or a Chiefs fan? We are hoping for a close but good game.

With this new accomplishment reached by Lebron where does this rank him in the NBA amongst the G.O.A.T conversation???? Does this make him number 1??? Does the losses he took in the finals keep him out of Top 3 conversation?? Or is this simply a generational debate where when you were born plays a role in your decision??? “Pretty Good, Huh?” (it's about Bullysmart) is one of our all time favorite episodes. We loved it so much, we knew we had to go deeper, and for season 2, Emily and Ky stepped the fuck up. Using the sophisticated technology we're known for here at Wine Weed Weird Headquarters, we uncovered the ancient wisdom on the vhs tape Ky found on eBay. And now, Emily and Ky present it to you. Not a series of seemingly wildly out of context clips that are funny because of their randomness, but straight from the source, the only (probably) anti-bullying system backed by Kareem Abdul Jabar. So was it weird? It was worth it for the disclaimer at the beginning alone. Actually, it was worth it for the FBI warning. Remember those?? Emily and Ky practice the techniques, discuss tips of their own, and consider if robots are among us. TheModernMoron podcast

Welcome to NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!  I'm Bill Curtis… Today's episode titled “Wait Wait Don't' Tell me it's not Wait Wait Don't Tell but actually The Modern Moron…”  I'm still Bill Curtis and here's your host of the Modern Moron… who is neither straight form a Hemingway Novel nor from the Sea… please welcome, The Old Man… Thank you Bill Curtis for that lovely introduction of The Modern Moron and The Old Man dot Show.  I know what you're asking yourself right now and the answer is yes, you can now find The Modern Moron on NPR by simply going to NPR dot ORG in your browser and then typing “The Modern Moron dot COM” into that same browser. This is part 2 of my conversation with my LA friend Larry Dorf.  Larry is my personal version of an Albert Brooks type and I tell him so.  I have a couple of those in my life and Larry is one of them.  He's a little… how do I say this… particular?  A little particular about how certain things are.  And somehow, to me, it's endearing and entertaining.  I love it.  Maybe it's the Goldylocks syndrome In the beginning of our conversation and a little bit into it, Larry… who I may earn the nickname “Goldylocks” for this show, has a little trouble getting comfortable as we chat about his son and dealing with his comic antics in the classroom.   We talk post pandemic virtual connecting via zoom and MicroSoft Teams if you're at work perhaps, and the requirements for an actor auditioning for roles and how that has changed drastically.  Whereas before, if you had an audition, they would send you the part of the script they wanted you to read, commonly called “the sides”, you would memorize the lines, go into the studio or casting office and read with the casting agent, where they would record you on camera and submit that to the producers, the director and the show runner.  But now, you're expected to be able to record yourself, at home and submit electronically.  This means you need to find someone to read the other parts, off camera, while you're recording yourself.  The upside is that you can do as many takes as you want and send in the best take, but you also don't have the opportunity to take direction from the casting director if they see something and would like to give you some direction. So Larry tells me about the challenges of auditioning post pandemic, and he drops a line that starts out as something that could be a great quote that you might hear from a great author or philosopher, and to me, it's one of those gems I can only get from my friend Larry.  But as I'm giving him a bad  time about it, I mention the great author of Moby Dick, James Melville.  Only there is no James Melville… it's Herman Mellville.  So in the moment that I am criticizing someone in their lack of eloquence, I boldly show what an idiot I am by calling Herman Melville, James Melville. And you know what?  I could have edited it out… I'm sorry had someone edit it out, we have a staff here at The Modern Moron.    But then it wouldn't be the Modern Moron.  This is exactly why the show has it's name.   We get to the meat of this episode when Larry tells me about an audition he had recently for a show on HBO Max about the Los Angeles Lakers during the 80's, the era that I believe was called “Showtime” but since there's a cable channel with that name already, the show on HBO is called,  “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” about  Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis,  their coach Pat Riley, and owner Dr. Jerry Buss.  One of the Executive Producers, and the writer of the first episode is Adam McKay, who has created so many great movies, we should do a whole episode on him and his partner Will Farrell.  The only problem is… I don't get HBO.  Rats.  I'm a cable cutter and HBO is one luxury I have to live without… for now. Larry tells me that he auditions to play the part of Larry Bird's father, but he's concerned that Larry Bird was not considered a very attractive man in the NBA, so I go on to assure him there are many more unattractive guys in the NBA and we start going down the list.  Mean spirited?  Cruel?  How can I say this isn't cruel.  Of course it is.  Basketball players are not trying to be models even though some of them do.  Mainly, they just want to play ball, but being in the public's eye leaves them vulnerable to articles like the one we found in this podcast and is below this episode's description and vulnerable to moron's like us, neither of whom have been asked to appear in any fashion magazines.   One thing I will say about the cowardice of this article is that there is no author.  In fact this moron of a sports website gives the lame excuse that it was written by a combination of a few writers and editors and that's why there no name associated with the article which is a bullshit way of evading the horrible things users would have said about them.  Not here at the modern Moron.  Feel free to let us have it at TheModernMoron.com or theoldman.show. The entertainment industry is going through a mass restructuring.  This leads us to Warner Brothers canceling the release of what was going to be a major DC Comics film “Batgirl”.  CLOSE - As it should be.  If your going to get rid of animation, get rid of the stuff that's for kids.  Kids don't need to be watching cartoons.  They should be working.  Making t-shirts and shoes and mining coal.   Poor Leslie Grace… or is it?  I'm sure she got paid, but to do all that work and not have it come out has to be extremely disappointing.  I read one excuse, I'm sorry quote from a studio executive that said the DCEU, which stands for the DC Comics Extended Universe, was compromised in terms of telling the correct origin story for one of the DC characters that somehow hinged on the character The Flash.  And you thought daytime soap operas got sticky?   I think Larry… or Goldylocks had some great insight into the potential positive effects of pressure.  In his example it was the additional pressure of going in to a casting office for an audition rather than doing it from the comfort of your own home.  Always staying in your comfort zone is not a good thing, it's not a productive thing and it's when you leave that comfort zone that you challenge yourself to grow and maybe be a little better than you thought.  Wow…  That's some deep stuff.   I can actually tease our next episode as we will be having a long wonderful chat with the Senator's daughter!  She is attending Graduate School at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.  That's right, The Modern Moron goes global.  She is getting her masters degree in art history specifically in the accessibility to art history… that has a lot more to it than wider doorways and ramps.  Maybe wider doorways in a metaphorical sense.  Very excited about that episode coming up next.   Thank you for listening to The Modern Moron and the Old Man dot Show.  We'll see you next time.     Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty | Official Website for the HBO Series - HBO.com  25 Ugliest NBA Players | SportyTell - sportytell.com Everything Revealed About Batgirl's Canceled Story - Screenrant.com Batgirl Star Leslie Grace Breaks Silence On DC Movie's Cancellation - Screenrant.com

Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where we are back on the grounds of the Leavy-berg Compound, returned from a one-week road trip to the tremendous Social Bar & Kitchen. We are back to get season seven off the ground and running, with a conversation show considering whether or not the NBA's so-called era of player empowerment has made like Arthur Fonzarelli and jumped-the-shark. Where we begin with the conception of player-empowerment is up for some debate, may it be Kareem Abdul-Jabar's move from Milwaukee to Los Angeles in the early 70's, ascendent post-Jordan superstars Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter's demand for respective departures from Toronto, or a LeBron James initiated play to make Miami the center of the basket-verse in teaming up with peers and fellow stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. A lot has changed since 1975; 2004; 2010. Individual player influence has grown exponentially, and as salaries have grown within some proportion to the NBA's increasingly exorbitant televised rights' fees, so have the influence of certain less-than-exemplary professionals: namely Ben Simmons, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. But first, the rants are back, baby, and with a vengeance. Ed sounds off at the start with a heated condemnation of an anti-abortion rights' amendment backed by both houses of Pennsylvania's state legislature; Andrew sets the stage for the Wimbledon gentlemen's final with long held animus for one finalist and begrudging fascination for the other less-accomplished, more mercurial opponent; and Zak brings it home with some dour news regarding the future of American democracy: the expected/pending outcome of Moore v. Harper in the Supreme Court likely coming down in support of independent state legislature doctrine.

OPEN - Welcome to another episode of the Modern Moron and another very… long… intro.  We all could use a little respite from Russia's violent invasion of Ukraine, not as much as the people of Ukraine could use it, but you get the idea.  So why not turn to the entertainment industry?  How about the Oscars?  Let's watch Hollywood celebrate itself.  Of course you know where I'm going with this and that is the incident where Will Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife Jada and her shaved head.  He made a G.I. Jane  joke, which wasn't particularly good, it was made off the cuff, not in the rehearsed segment.  After slapping Rock, Will Smith yelled twice in a very full and articulate voice to, “Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth”.  It was at that point that everyone went beyond shock and dismay that it might be a rehearsed stunt, because you shouldn't use the “F” word on live television… twice. So now we're all Monday Morning quarterbacking this whole thing.  Lucky for you I have all the answers because I am an omnipotent being who is all knowing.  My take on it is similar to the take Jimmy Kimmel had and the take is this: Chris Rock made the G.I. Jane joke about Jada Pinkett's shaved head.  The camera cuts to the two of them and Will Smith appears to be chuckling and rolling with it.  His wife, however, is not.  The camera cuts back to Chris Rock and we can only ASSume, and you know I love to assume, that Will looked over at his  wife and his chuckle quickly disappeared.  I'm willing to bet it was a look like, “If you don't' want to sleep on the couch for an indeterminate amount of time, you better do something.”  Or maybe he just saw that her feelings were hurt.  In any case, the rest is history and and it was ugly on so many levels. So, on a night that should have been a celebration of his great achievement in his industry, instead he's stuck in a very, very bad situation.   Chris Rock has made no statement but ticket sales to his standup performances have skyrocketed.  And there's one other person we have not heard from and that is the person who was on the butt end of the Chris Rock joke and that is Jada Pinkett Smith.  She has only posted a cryptic message on Instagram stating, “This is a season for healing and I'm here for it.” I'd like to say this is not a season for cryptic messages.  This is not a season to keep quiet, when you had some hand in this whole occurrence.  No, you're not responsible for your husband's foolish action, but you are responsible for your reaction.  While you didn't like the comment, who would, it was your look of disapproval or disgust at your husband… who you've been married to for 24 years in what you have indicated was an open marriage, had to know what you were communicating to your husband in that moment.  Or even put that aside, you still have an opportunity to alleviate some of the pressure on your husband by making a clear statement owning some of your reaction or… making a statement about your medical condition having alopecia and how many people have it.  But you have not.  I would suggest folks look to Kareem Abdul Jabar.  Why in the world would I bring up his name?  By the time you listen to this, his essay on this incident will have gone viral and in it he goes over the myriad of issues this incident, in those few seconds, has created.  The piece is titled, “Will Smith Did a Bad, Bad Thing: Slapping Chris Rock was also a blow to men, women, the entertainment industry, and the Black community.”  I'm not sure where you will end up reading it but it's source is a site called “Substack” which is similar to “Patreon”.   If you're like me you have no idea what either of those are.  They are both “platforms” meaning they are websites and mobile apps for people who what to make money from their blogs, podcasts, Tick-tock, Instagram, etc.  I digress… Kareem's subtitle says it all: Will Smith's act was a blow to men, women, the entertainment industry and the black community.  Kareem addresses each of those things and says that Jada Pinkett was and is completely capable of defending herself, especially against words, namely a joke that she didn't find funny.  On that note, I would like to read you a quote from a video on Jada Pinkett's Instagram account from 2021 showing herself with a shaved head, she said, "Now at this point, I can only laugh.”  So, besides being extremely ironic, it also shows how it's easy for anyone to say they have let go of something and realizing that “thing” they thought they let go of is still very raw.  Plus it's one thing to make jokes about yourself and another to have them made at your expense.  I would also include that, I don't know if she was ever a professional model specifically, but I think most folks would agree that Jada Pinkett is and has been very beautiful in terms of traditional beauty and features that are, on a broad scale, considered beautiful.   Jesus, do you see how friggin careful I'm being right now, not to overtly show how shallow and superficial I am?  Political correctness takes wayyyy to much time to make sure I haven't offended someone.  And I think taking too much time making sure you haven't offended anyone, you haven't impressed anyone either.  And by impressed I mean, have you provided value in terms of being either entertaining, educational or informative.  How's that for being a blowhard. Enough of that, and at the same time we can't get enough of that.  We love a train wreck don't we.  Especially when we'er not on either one of the trains. This is part two with my friend Larry Dorf, creator, writer and producer of the Netflix hit, “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window”.  We spend the rest of our time talking about:  what the promotions process was like in terms of doing interviews before the show was released.  They actually had to be coached on how to handle certain questions like a politician.   What it was like shooting a production on location during the Covid Pandemic.  Once the cast was set, you couldn't just bring someone in on short notice because of the Covid protocols at the time.   We talk about one of the executive producers for the series which was Will Farrell and there's an interesting story there.  How to segue your business from hanging a shingle outside your door to actually having a company with a name and a logo.  How do you do that? There's a chat about Larry's parents, and this fits right into the Modern Moron listener sweetspot demographics, we talk about senior living facilities… I'm sorry… communities.  Communities.  I think the main difference is cocktail hour. All this and more on the Modern Moron and thank you for listening… CLOSE - Another element in “The Woman in The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window” besides how tiring the Title gets after saying it a few times, is what I'm going to call an homage to, let's call it the Scorsese montage.  If you've seen “Goodfellas”, you know what I'm talking about.  Scorsese grabs a hip, rocking piece of music, adds the narrator with some clips of what transpires.  To me, the most famous is in Goodfellas when we see all the Gangsters get whacked to the fantastic guitar of Eric Clapton in “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes, in fact it's in the second half of the song…. The Woman in the House, kills it - no pun intended- with their homage to that cinematic mechanism with the Rolling Stones “Can You Hear Me Knockin'”.  Why am I so excited about this?  Music is so, so powerful in evoking emotions and this song in particular has so many moments within it, so many builds and mood swings, from the iconic guitar intro with Mick Jagger in the background…To the chorus… To the incredible saxophone solo… to the cold ending.  Set to images, it's fantastic and yes I'm going on and on like a nerd about this but when you watch it you'll see and feel what I mean.  Great job by Rock, Paper, Scissors Productions. That's it for the Modern Moron for a while, unless you want to be on the show… I'm not going to babble about my opinions week after week just because I'm omnipotent.  If I find something interesting like the concept of Bitcoin mining, yes that's a thing, and how much electricity is required to power the thousands of computers that engage in Bitcoin mining, so much so that the town of Hardin, Montana that had a coal fired power plant that was going to be closed down was purchased just to run the Bitcoin mining computers.  An entire powerplant.   It was going to be closed, but now it's back to running around the clock burning coal.  To make money from Bitcoin.  The same thing is happening in New York near Ceneca Lake.  Reported 15,000 computers that could power something like 30,000 homes.  For bitcoin.   If I could get someone who claims to know about that, I would definitely talk to them.  So until next time, thank you for listening to The Modern Moron. Showtime Podcast with Lakers Legend Michael Cooper Ep. 14 Becoming More Accountable with Jamaal Wilkes Twitter: @ShowtimeCooper Ari Temkin: @arisports Powered by BetOnline.AG Coop brings on his former teammate Jamaal Wilkes, who discusses playing at UCLA under John Wooden, his impressions of Magic Johnson when he was a young player and his feelings on the game today. Wilkes had quite the affinity for Wooden, and he opens up in the episode on the things that made Wooden different as a coach and why he's still influencing him to this day.   1:40 - 2:45 What was it like for Jamaal to grow up in Ventura? The Wilkes family moved around a lot when Jamaal was younger and finally ended up in Southern California.   2:45 - 4:15 How Jamaal got into basketball and what was his dad’s influence in his love for sports.    Jamaal Wilkes: “My dad loved baseball, did a short stint in the Negro Leagues. We loved baseball growing up. As I went into 9th grade, I was a tall kid and I had the chance to make the varsity, which was unheard of, and that meant I had to give up baseball.”   4:50 - 9:45 What was it like growing up in LA and being recruited by John Wooden to go and play at UCLA? What was John Wooden like as a coach?   Jamaal Wilkes: “I really liked USC and they told me: ‘You come here, you’ll be a Trojan for life and you go there and you’ll be a Bruin for 4 years.’”   10:06 - 12:03 How would you characterize John Wooden’s leadership style. What made Wooden such a legendary leader.   Jamaal Wilkes: “His whole thing was you are a work in progress.”   12:05 - 13:15 Jamaal Wilkes on Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and how the legendary UCLA coach would teach the pyramid to the team every year.   Jamaal Wilkes: “Every year he would show us how to tie up our shoes, how to lace up our shoes.”   13:15 - 14:56 John Wooden was asked once who his ideal player would be and his answer was Jamaal Wilkes. What does Wilkes think about that quote?   Jamaal Wilkes: “Let’s face it, no one deserves it and I like to think it’s more of a reflection of I gave him all I had when I was out there.”   15:20 - 16:08 Jamaal’s story in meeting Kareem Abdul Jabar for the first time when he was at UCLA.   16:10 - 19:17 What were the teams and seasons he remembers the most during Jamaal’s time at UCLA. Jamaal: “Coach Wooden had this bubble. We had a lot of attention and the alumni were very expectant and he just had this thing that we focused on what we did and tried to do it as well as we could.”   19:36 - 23:51 Jamaal went from winning all the championships at UCLA to winning a title in his rookie year with the Golden State Warriors.   Jamaal:” THey had a five year history of drafting number one picks who were total busts. One guy turned out to be a heroin addict. Going in, it was looking good at all.”    24:01 - 24:39 How was Rick Barry to play with? Was he as bad of a teammate as a lot of people claim that he was?    25:03 - 26:57 After Golden State, Jamaal went to the Lakers, and then in 1980, Magic Johnson joined the team. What were his impressions of Magic when he first got to the team?   Jamaal Wilkes: “I thought Magic was going to be a great player, I didn’t know it was going to happen right away.”   27:09 - 30:01 People forget how instrumental Jamaal Wilkes was in the decisive Game Six of the 1980 NBA Finals, after Kareem got hurt.     31:05 - 32:12 Coop’s lightning round: Bill Walton Jerry West Magic Johnson Langston Hughes John Woden     32:25 - 35:51 Wilkes on “Cornbread, Earl and Me” and being a movie star!   35:52 - 40:05 Where did Jamaal’s shot come from and how many coaches tried to change his shot over the years.   Jamaal Wilkes: “No one ever said anything to me...until I got to UCLA, my first week of practice and coach Wooden calls me over.” 40:40 - 42:25 What does Jamaal Wilkes think about the NBA Bubble and who is going to win the 2020 NBA Championship.    Jamaal Wilkes: “I think the NBA does have to try and finish the season. I think it would be psychologically devastating with everything else going on.”        42:47 - 43:50 Jamaal Wilkes on getting into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame and what the achievement means for him.   43:50 - 45:16 Jamaal is impressed and encouraged by what he’s seen recently with what is going on in the country over civil rights issues.

131: Gary Vitti: Former Head Trainer of the Los Angeles Lakers from 1984-2016, Author of the book "32 Years of Titles and Tears From the Best Seat in the House", shares stories of Shaq, Kobe, Magic, Kareem & others while experiencing the highs and lows while winning multiple championships.  What a life!  Gary Vitti Imagine becoming a head trainer in an era where there wasn’t a clear path to this position. Gary Vitti shares what it was like to navigate the world of sports during the 1970s and the 1980s. “I graduated from college in 1976, which means I went in ‘72 and although there has been athletic trainers around since the gladiators, a real major in athletic training at the college level, evidence-based practices of sports medicine really didn’t exist. There weren’t that many athletic training programs in the 70s. In terms of myself at that age at 18 years old I didn’t even know what an athletic trainer was.”    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Gary Vitti, Head Trainer of the Los Angeles Lakers, working with 13 different coaches and achieving eight championships. Gary Vitti discusses working toward wanting to work in academia for a Division I university to transitioning into the upper echelon of sports, training superstar NBA players like Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Kobe Bryant, and James Worthy for one of the biggest franchises in sports history. “If Shaq decided he wanted to win every game, we would have won every game. That is how great he was. But he had a different thing in life. He didn’t care about being the best.”   What You Will Learn:   Gary Vitti talks about how the Lakers rolled out the red carpet for him to get the head athletic trainer position, including interviewing for six hours. “They sent me a first-class ticket. I’d never flown first class before. So that was pretty cool. Believe it or not, Jerry West picked me up at the airport in a navy blue Mercedes with tan interior. I had never been in a Mercedes before and Jerry West is driving. My childhood idol Jerry West picks me up at the airport, drives me to the fabulous Forum and it just happens to be that that day is the day that USA basketball was playing Spain for the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.”    Gary Vitti discusses writing his book 32 Years of Titles and Tears From the Best Seat in the House that covers his experiences with the Los Angeles Lakers and sports science. “The book is a series of chapters about what I learned about happiness, greatness, and leadership. What Kobe taught me was that you can never have enough talent. But talent is the most overrated thing in life. What if I told you, are you ready for this? Kobe wasn’t that talented...Nobody worked harder than Kobe. But a lot of players work hard. In addition to working hard, Kobe worked intelligently. He was really smart about how he expended his energy.”    Gary’s talks about Bill Sharman. “The Lakers played the Celtics and the Knicks I think seven times and could not win a championship until Bill Sharman showed up. So people that don’t know Bill Sharman, Bill Sharman is one of three people in the Hall of Fame, Nesmith Hall of Fame, that are in there as both a player and a coach. There are only three people that are in that way. He is also one of the only people that ever played professional baseball at the major league level and professional basketball. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Celtics.”    Was it Pat Riley’s intensity or was it Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson’s intensity that created that dynamic that the Lakers had? “West took Riley out of the broadcast booth and made him an assistant coach. After West had actually won the championship in ‘80. So, they drafted Magic in ‘79, won the championship that same year 79-80, because it crosses the new year. Then going into the next year, they fire West and make Pat Riley the head coach. Then he brings in Bill Bertka. Then they go on to have basically the rest of the decade, for the most part, being on top. Winning 5 championships from 79’-89.”   Gary Vitti explains his major respect for Karrem Abdul Jabar’s athletic prowess and success. “I make a very strong argument in the book that Kareem Abdul Jabar may not only be the greatest basketball player that has ever played the game. But he may be the most successful athlete to ever walk the planet. If you look at what he has accomplished in sports from the time that he was a child, he has won everything. Everything that you could possibly win and he has done it multiple times. He was in the playoffs 18 times out of 20 years. He has six championships with two teams. When he retired, we never won again, until the Kobe/Shaq era. So, even though Magic was still playing, he didn’t win without Kareem.”    Pieces of the Puzzle   Gary Vitti compares being on a team to a puzzle. “Being on a team like like being part of a puzzle. There are no extra pieces. If you are short a piece, then the puzzle is not complete, and you know there are no extra pieces. So you have to find your place in the puzzle and fit into that place. Many times, that means you have to sacrifice a piece of yourself to fit in the puzzle.”   The Test of One’s Character    During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast with Gary Vitti, he also opens up about the troubling time when Magic Johnson came out publicly as being HIV positive. “The true test of one’s character is when things are going badly. Not when everything is going good. And the second thing was, as I said before, I bought into the American sports creed of there is winning and there is misery. I never considered that happiness really relies on not achieving what you are chasing, but being grateful for what you already have. And that begins with your health and that of your loved ones.”  Links to Additional Resources: Gary Vitti: Linkedin Book: The Vitti Report: 32 Years of Titles and Tears From the Best Seat in the House

Nothing says "screwball" comedy like professional basketball in the late 70's. So why not have a film about a terrible team that becomes great via the powers of astrology? Toss in Dr. Julius Erwing, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Meadowlark Lemon and repeat stinker stars like Branscombe Richmond and Julius Carry III and you've got some loonie business that is right up our alley. On paper this film should be one to steer clear from. Even just watching the trailer is enough to give casual viewers of crummy films the heebie-jeebies. Yet somehow there is a serious level of charm to this film beyond the obvious live-action WB cartoon version that Jonathan Winters was shooting for. There's a seriously well blended volume of comedy of all types that award both fans of basketball and those that loathe all sports. Everyone loves the Harlem Globetrotters and this film reinforces why that works. The real stinker in The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh is the music. Imagine music worse (yet more catchy) than Cannon's The Apple. Yes, THAT bad of music. And it is arguably more full of bad music than The Apple as well. Woof. We thoroughly enjoyed The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh and if you like films like Odds and Evens and Condorman, you're going to enjoy it too.

Understand Before Being Understood About a month ago I left a comment on the Spreaker Live show, and this comment resulted in a response from the host that in a conversation he had with me was "Disproportional." So after we both hissed at each I set up a time when we could talk about this and see how we pushed each other's buttons. We did and it was a great interview. The bad news is my SD Card ran out of room, and my backup (mp3 skype recorder) didn't get it either. I could call Alex back on, but at this point, so much water is under the bridge, I thought I would just paraphrase what really happened. In my comment, there were times when I used ALL CAPS to make a point. Alex is used to dealing with comments from YouTube which are much crueler, and personal that the average podcast comment This was the first time he had been challenged on the podcast side of this content (vs the YouTube side) and it caught him off guard. He apologized for calling me a schmuck, and I explained that when he made a joke about me not having any listeners (because I don't use Spreaker), and that I wasn't up front with people about the fact that I work for Libsyn, and we chatted about that. I explained how I wasn't trying to push his buttons, and then we did something that most people miss out on. We had some cool conversation about topics we have in common. For example, Chris Cornell had just died. Neither one of use quite gets while World Trade Center Tower Number 7 went down. In the end, I look forward to meeting Alex at Podcast Movement. If I had not taken a second to step back, and wonder if there was something I DID to create such a reaction (instead of just condemning the other person) then I would've lost out on an opportunity to learn something (be careful using caps in comments), and Alex wouldn't have been able to see his reaction. Lastly, I think we both gained a new friend. So instead of being so set on proving somebody wrong, instead maybe ask, "Why did you say that?" or "What were you feeling when you said that?" and try to understand before being understood (Which is a lesson I learned from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) Seriously, How Do I Grow My Audience? Devlin Wilder posted in a Facebook Group, "Please, for the love of all that's good and pure, someone please help me WITH REAL INFO on how I get the numbers. I don't want to hear I need to have my show out for years or I need to get to 200 episodes or what not. And I've had no luck with Fiverr. I need to know the real deal" This is like saying, "I want to know about making a baby, but I don't want to hear about ovaries, sperm, or having to wait 9 months." THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS  In her book Beyond Powerful Radio Radio Consultant Vallerie Geller states, "in my experience, with few exceptions it takes about three years to build a talk station." She points out that the original Star Trek Series was canceled after three seasons and it was re-runs where the audience found the show. Jerry Seinfeld has framed a memo stating that his show has a poor supporting cast, and most people who saw the test pilot would not watch it again. Gary Vaynrchuck says nobody watched his show for the first 19 months Rand Fishkin tells about his wife, Geraldine, and her travel blog, Everywhereist. For two years she never broke 100 visitors a day (she does a blog). Five years later she gets 1000,000 visitors a month. Source Success comes from feedback, and the ability to look at yourself and ask "Can I Improve This?" Growing up I had a basketball hoop in my backyard. Every time I shot a basket and it bounced off the rim and back at me.... that was feedback.  I watched Kareem Abdul Jabar and his sky hooks shot. It was unblockable. I practiced my skyhook over and over and over. Eventually, I could shoot it with my eyes shut. That took time. If you want to quit your job in six weeks, I would recommend that you not even start podcasting. This is like someone wanting to lose 40 pounds in six weeks. You soon learn that six weeks is not that long, and 40 pound is not that small. The Answer is There is No Answer There are so many factors that play into this Are you working full time? What market are you in and how crowded is it? How unique are you? Your Web Design It's Not Who You Know, It's Who Knows You Podcast Movement is coming up in August, and DC Podfest is coming up in November. I will be at Podcast Movement, and I plan on being in DC Podfest. Do these cost lots of money? Just the travel alone can be expensive based on your budget. That is the key, what is your budget? If you don't have the budget, don't be stupid, don't go. I'm saving money as we speak for Social Media marketing world. I have to plan. I have to put money in my budget. If you have a family with a spouse and kids, don't be stupid. Is It Worth Going to An Event? I have a podcast group for people in Northeast Ohio. I rarely get more than five people in attendance. One of those people (Matt from theauthorinsideyou.com) helped get me on a local TV show. I met Gary Leland, Paul Colligan, and Rob Walch at one of the fire New Media Expos. Rob was the person I called when I found myself out of a job and looking to work in the podcasting industry (I now work for Libsyn). I met Ken Blanchard at an event and I haven't stopped laughing yet. I met Jared Easley and Dan Franks at the New Media Show. Later they would start Podcast Movement and I've been blessed to say I've spoken at every single one in one capacity or another. I met Eri kK Johnson and came up with the idea of adding him to the Podcast Review show at an event. I met Mike Russel of Music Radio Creative at the New Media Show I met Glenn The Geek At Podcast Movement. Glen got me involved with Chris Krimitsos and I was able to speak at Podfest.us That lead to me helping with the Messengers Podcast about their documentary. That lead to me being the closing keynote at podfest.us this year. One person, one contact. Last year I met a whole bunch of people at DC Podfest including Matthew from Podtopod.com. Most of those I paid for (events post-2016 I typically can expense out). When I was a musician, I once drove four hours after getting off work at 8 PM to drive to Cincinnati and hangout with a bunch of indie musicians for three hours before turning around and driving home (I was probably 20). One of the relationships I start at that meeting was a guy who went to another event and learned about podcasting. Whooshkaa Free Media Hosting For those who are new to me reviewing media hosting, I have some criteria. 1. Don't mess with my file. What I upload is what I want people to download. 2. Give me the ability to have an unlimited back catalog (unlimited storage) 3. Don't limit my audience size (unlimited bandwidth) 4. Don't control my feed, and make it easy to leave if I choose to do so. I need to be able to put in an iTunes redirect script. 5. Give me support. 6. Charge me for your service so you can stay in business 7. Give me stats so I can see what's working. It would be nice if they were accurate Whooshkaa is doing something that has been tried by audiometric.io and before them podango.com. This is where you give free hosting so you can see advertising on the podcast. Do Whooshkaa meet my criteria? No, but there is an asterisk. They mess with your file (as they put code into the mp3 file to alert when to play an advertisement), so they keep most of your ID3 tags, but they ditch you image (so if someone downloads your show to their computer and plays it, the dreaded gray music note of death appears on a windows machine). They also change your file name. They don't change your file format, but by nature, they HAVE to change your file to stay in business. Their support was quick and very helpful. Their stats are very similar to what everyone else provides (number of downloads, geographic, operating system, the technology used, etc). They do offer how long someone has listened. Unless they have cracked a new code, this is typically a wasted stat. The only way they can get that information is if you are using their player. To this, I point out that over 80% of podcasts are listened to on a mobile device (so this stat is kind of a "Corinthian leather" feature, sounds good, but in the end not that accurate). They have a built in "Clammr" feature, called highlights. Clammr.com is the first service that allows you to make snippets of a show and share it on social media. With Clammr you can share a snippet of the show and when they click on the snippet they are taken to a place where they can listen to the rest of the episode. You can see how many people listened to your "Highlight." For me, I thought the design could be adjusted to make it go from easy to SUPER EASY to hear the rest of the podcast. They do have a weird "Sign up for our newsletter" when you send people to an episode on Whooshkaa. The problem is that for the Whooshkaa email list (not yours). Getting Paid As the code in the mp3 file has the word "Triton" I'm guessing that they are using Triton for their advertisements. This means that podcasters can probably expect 1 to 2 cents per download. So if I had my Weekly Web Tools on their platform I might make $12 for the month (at 1200 downloads a month). That is if you are lucky enough to have advertising. When I enquired about their CPA, they responded, "We don't have any information on the CPA for ads.  We generally only work with our larger podcasters/media companies for ad injection." When I wanted to know how many downloads you need to get a sponsor, a support person lets me know, "Generally more than 10k per month before we approach a podcaster for ads. Some of our current partners monetising include News Corp, Fox Sports, Sky News, Bauer and a few large Australian Sporting organizations. When I pointed out to them that others had tried this model, they responded, "We support the podcast ecosystem with free hosting, while making ad revenue from the top 5%.  At the end of the day, the cost of hosting a podcast with small downloads is negligible.  We hope that some of the smaller podcasters turn out to be the next Ira Glass or Alex Blumberg :) It's super easy to pick a spot where you want your advertising to be placed. By default, they want to add three advertisers (I chose one). I believe you will be contacted when you reach certain milestones for advertising as there is nothing in the dashboard (that I can find, and nothing in their help section) about getting paid (i.e paypal, direct deposit). Conclusion Call me weird, but building your podcast on a host that doesn't charge is risky business (again, podango, audiometric.io) but if you're in a boat and have zero budget (they do redirect feeds if you want to leave) then I would recommend Whooshkaa over another free service Pinecast if you're looking for a free service with all the trimmings. If you asked me which one will be in business in five years between Pinecast and Whooshkaa, I would put my money on Pinecast as their free service motivates you to upgrade to their paid service. With Whooshkaa they are hoping that people with 10,000 downloads per episode take their advertising, and don't leave for another host. I notice in their terms of service it states, "If you are a Commercial User/Channel Partner, this may be altered by any specific agreements we hold with you." Salah Abdul-Wahid was born Daniel Hewlitt. He converted to Islam as an adult, after growing up Catholic in a large Creole family living in Los Angeles.    In the 1960s when Salah was in his early twenties, he found himself caught up in the political unrest within the black communities of Los Angeles. At the time, many people were seeking new answers to old questions about the history of white dominance in the United States and the various systems of oppression that affected people of color in this country. In seeking answers to these questions, Salah found himself open to a radical conversion, leaving behind the Catholic faith of his family and his youth and converting to Islam.   Salah talks about his intrigue with the Muslim intellectuals he observed as a student at the University of Southern California, while at the same time he was drawn to the writings of Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam.    I was fascinated with Salah’s conversion story and why he changed his name and faith at such an important time in his personal life and in American history. I knew only vaguely about famous men who had taken a similar path - Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabar come to mind - but I was unsure of the meaning behind it. This was my chance to ask someone, and our conversation had my head spinning for weeks.   (It should be noted, based on several of the cultural references in this episode, that we recorded our conversation this summer, several months before the 2016 election results.)   Later in his life, Salah would travel the world and glean powerful wisdom about the role of religion in culture, and, as you’ll hear in my conversation with him, his comfort with asking hard questions and having tough conversations has been a consistent way in which he experiences the world.   If you enjoy Smartest Person in the Room, please leave us a review in iTunes and share the show with fellow podcast listeners.
