On the podcast today we have Marieke Van De Rakt & Taco Verdonschot, and they're both from Yoast SEO. I think it's quite likely that you've heard of Yoast SEO, but in case you have not, it's a very popular WordPress SEO plugin, installed over 5 million times. They've been optimising websites for many years and make significant contributions to the WordPress project, committing to Core, sponsoring events and many other things. I sat down with them both at WordCamp Europe and we talked about some of the recent changes that have taken place within the company. Having worked hard to build and maintain their company's reputation, they decided that it was time to steer the business in a new direction by selling it to Newfold Digital. We get into the reasons for this acquisition and the subsequent reshuffling of the management of the company. What were the details of that agreement, why did they join forces with Newfold Digital in particular, and how has the acquisition gone? We also talk about their longstanding commitment to contributing back to the WordPress project. Why have they done this and what benefits have they seen from this approach? Why do they bring so many of their team to WordCamps? Although Yoast is well known in the WordPress space, they recently brought their product into an entirely new market, Shopify. This has led them to create a SaaS version of their SEO solution and has brought them into contact with a completely new market. How has this move gone and does it mean they're moving away from WordPress? Typically, when we record the podcast, there's not a lot of background noise, but that's not always the case with these WordCamp Europe interviews. We were competing against crowds and the air-conditioning. Whilst the podcasts are more than listenable, I hope that you understand that the vagaries of the real world were at play. Useful links. One of the things I love about living in Indiana is the color of the seasons. There are the bright pastels of spring, the rich greens of summer, and the bright orange and yellow of fall. The exception is winter. The dreary days of winter seem colorless and bland compared to the vibrancy of colors throughout the rest of the year. That's why I love evergreen trees. They bring spots of color to my view all year long. Just as these wonderful trees bring consistent color to my yard, evergreen content brings spots of color to a marketing calendar. What is evergreen content? It is information which is always relevant to readers. Unlike seasonal content or breaking news, this information answers questions readers have every day. That's one of the advantages of evergreen content, you can insert it into your blogging schedule whenever you need filler. Frequently asked questions, simple how-to blog posts, or product reviews make great evergreen content. These posts can be researched and written well in advance. Then they are ready whenever you need some fresh content but there just isn't anything happening that is newsworthy. Breaking news gets stale Sure breaking news and hot industry trends are exciting to write about and read, but they are hot for a moment and then become irrelevant. The posts may get a lot of traction when they are written, but like the beautiful spring flowers I love so much, they fade quickly. How to write evergreen content Start with the questions customers ask. Look in your email folder for those long answers you have already written. Use your answer as the foundation of a FAQ. If one customer has the question, others will as well. In addition to rounding out your blog, these posts tend to index well on Google, as prospective customers search for answers. The timeless nature of this type of content allows it to build value over time. A well written FAQ or how-to article with a good title and appropriate keywords will bring traffic to your website weeks, months, and even years after it is published. Focus on Keywords. Brainstorm a list of keywords you want to rank for. Use a keyword tool such as Google Trends or Google Search Console to find alternatives and ideas. I searched the phrase WordPress SEO, for example, and Google Trends suggested WordPress SEO plugin and WordPress SEO Themes. Both of these would make interesting posts on their own. They are more “niche topics” which means a well written post has a better shot at rising to the top because there will be less competition. Commit to Quality. If you want your post to stand the test of time, you can't just slap up a 500 word article and call it a day. If you do, another article will come along pretty quickly and knock you down. So take extra time with your evergreen content. Research the topic, add unique examples, and your perspective. Create an article which isn't just another 5 Ways to Do This….. Update Periodically. I know, I said this would be the kind of blog post that would stand the test of time. IT wouldn't age, it would live on forever. All of that is true. But if it is a great traffic draw for your website, go back occasionally and add new content, a different image, and maybe a new CTA to keep it fresh. The key to successful blogging isn't necessarily more content, just better content. LOOKING FOR MORE BLOGGING TIPS? CHECK OUT OUR NEW BLOGGING FOR BUSINESS SELF PACED COURSE

#Metakeywords #Metatags ##Seo #Metakeywords are #Metatags that you can use to give search engines more information about a page's content. They're found in a webpage's HTML source code, and are not visible to visitors. Hi, I'm Cally, from the International Institute of Digital Marketing. Here are some use cases for #Metakeywords 1. Create an internal tagging system Many CMS' and website builders make it easy to add #Metakeywords to pages, as do many free WordPress #SEO plugins. This makes it easy to ‘repurpose' the tag for an internal keyword tagging system. Just set the tag as your target keyword on each page. There are three reasons it can be useful to do this: Help prevent keyword cannibalization. Keyword cannibalization is where a website targets the same keyword across multiple pages. It can cause all kinds of issues, like undesirable pages outranking desirable pages. Avoid overlapping work. If you work in enterprise #SEO, there are probably many people and teams working on similar things. Having an internal keyword tagging system helps prevent multiple teams from targeting the same keyword. Find collaboration opportunities. If you see that you're not ranking well for one of your keywords, you might want to collaborate with another team to improve and update your content. 2. Find ‘seed' keywords from competitors Bill Slawski's recent Twitter poll shows that roughly 33% of people still use the keywords meta tag. As some of those people will undoubtedly be your competitors, this can come in quite handy for finding ‘seed keywords' during keyword research. Just look for the keywords meta tag on your competitor's homepage. In today's episode, we're going to talk about what it's like to be guiding a company through stormy times. And if being a boss is really all it's cracked up to be.

Peter Mead with Jason Barnard at Search Marketing Summit 2019 Peter Mead talks with Jason Barnard about WordPress SEO and the new age of Gutenberg. We start with the Sound of Music, move onto the wonderful, sharing SEO community and supportive companies such as Yoast and SEMrush. Peter Mead is a fan of Yoast, and Yoost. Expert is a misnomer – its more about depth of knowledge and experience… with (perhaps) a little magic. Peter then makes an analogy with art, and we get onto the simplicity of Picasso. In the competition between Yoast and WordPressSEO, Yoast wins hands down for Peter. More functionalities, easier, new (rather exciting) Schema markup. We get onto the treachery of updating plugins, PHP and the WordPress core. WPengine makes all that easier and safer. Peter has three rules: install Yoast, get onto WPengine and get onto Cloudflare. We get in a bit of philosophy with Sun Tzu and Monty Python. Then back to Google's investment in WordPress and fun with Gutenberg for the final furlong.

Today's Sponsor: WP Import "Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely." -- Henry Ford Loopholes, superstition (H1 tags, meta tags, duplicate content), shortcuts/hacks, or a "good" user experience? Dwell time and human reviewers. Consistently put out content (at least once a week), promote it using Facebook, Twitter, eClincher, Zapier -- save "temporary" content like webinars, Periscopes, Snapchats, FB live into YouTube, iTunes, etc. 1. Use WordPress and a mobile theme (built-in or WP Touch) 2. Install All in One SEO Pack and Google XML Sitemaps plugins 3. Install W3 Total Cache and set it to minify JavaScript and CSS -- this will shave a few seconds off load time and give you a boost (and use Google PageSpeed Insights and tools.pingdom.com) 4. Add 10 years on the domain (only gives a slight boost but is easy to do) 5. Verify the site with Google Webmaster Tools (and Add Google Analytics code if you know how to do that) 6. Buy an SSL certificate and redirect the site to 100% forced SSL (a little bit of work) 7. Link to your legal pages at the bottom of every page. Terms and conditions, earnings disclaimer, and especially a privacy policy (PaperTemplate.com is great for this) 8. Add a physical mailing address and a phone number at the bottom of every page, even if it's just a PO box and a Google Voice number. 9. Load up your WordPress ping list 10. The next step for my blog: Signup for Facebook Instant Articles and install the plugin (this is new and I haven't done it yet)
If you're ever considering building your own website or having a developer create a website for you I think that Wordpress is a great option for you and your veterinary hospital. Wordpress, for those of you who don't know, is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. In plain terms, it is likely the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system that is available. Since it is open source, wordpress is free to download and install on your servers, which is really cool. What we're talking about today are plugins for your Wordpress site. Plugins are pre-built pieces of functionality that do specific things on your website, so that you don't have to go out and code a piece of software to make your website custom made. For example, maybe you want a live chat or appointment setting feature, so you'd go out and find the right plugins to do that, which there are already pre-built ones. Plugins can be both free and also cost money, but the ones I'm going to talk to you about are going to be free. Plugins mentioned in this episode: Wordpress SEO by Yoast- This plugin helps with SEO, and really helps you approach your content and site from a SEO standpoint without having to get a really in-depth knowledge of how to do SEO on your website. This has feeature that do everything from give you previews of how your content will look in search results to create XML sitemaps that you can then submit to Webmaster's Tools. Shareaholic- This is a really good social plugin that lets people engage with your content across social media. It also has a google analytics integration so you can measure your social efforts. Easy Content Templates- This is a great tool when combined with my 31 Veterinary Blog Posts Ideas Guide, don't worry about what to write, just be able to sit down and grind out some really good content. Editorial Calendar- This is great for creating content with a group of people. So if you want to get the whole team engaged, or just plan your content around the calendar, this has great features for getting your content published. Google Webmaster Verification Tools- This can help your hospital integrate with google analytics, google adwords and google webmaster tools. It makes pasting your user ID very simple. Measure your marketing or you're just guessing! New stuff to check out this week: Dr. Braden Collins at Bunbury Eaton Veterinary Hospital doing some really awesome holiday photo competitions. I highly recommend you go check it out over at buzzblogger.com/top-wordpress-plugins It includes a few of the usual suspects as well a bunch of less well known but very cool plugins. The list included a few of my personal favourites which I frequently recommend... Wordpress SEO by Yoast - The best plug-in for doing the on-page SEO of your posts. Disqus - The best commenting plugin that integrates with the commenters social media accounts. Leadpages - The easiest way to create opt-in pages and collect leads BluBrry PowerPress - The best tool for hosting your podcast within a blog post. (If your listening to this podcast on my blog then your using this plugin right now!) The list also had many plugins which I wasn't aware of. Some that really caught my eye that I want to try out include... BackWPup - This tool will back up your site on a regular basis so that you can restore any previous version if you ever needed to. In the past I've used backup buddy for this but that tool isn't free so I'm going to compare the two and see how this compares. W3 Total Cache - Quite simply this plugin helps your site to load up quicker. This is important for your website visitors to have a good experience when they come to your site. WP Smush It - This plugin reduces the file size of your images without affecting how they look and that helps for site load time as well. I'll definitely be installing that one. One Press Social Locker - This allows you to lock content on your site and unlock it in return for a facebook share or retweet or plus one. I've used tools like this before but not a free one and this will come in handy for several of my sites. Welcome Gate - A plugin by LeadBrite who brought us LeadPages and LeadPlayer that allows you to put a welcome gate pop-up on the home page of your website. Although I previously knew of this plugin, they used to charge for it and I had not purchased it. However they are now giving it away free of charge so grab it while you still can. Google Analytics for Wordpress - This will be a game changer for me. I don't use my Google analytics nearly enough, the main reason being that I rarely think to go login and check things. I do it but not as often as I should. This plugin brings that data right into the Wordpress dashboard of your site and personally I login to this often, so that's very convenient for me. Hotspots Analytics - This is an analytics and heatmapping tool for WordPress. Heatmaps can be very useful in determining how visitors use your site but tools I've used in the past like clicktale and crazyegg can have a significant price tag depending on the complexity of your monthly plan. Seeing as this tool is free, I'll reserve judgement of how good it will prove to be until after I've tried it for myself. However, a free heatmapping tool could prove to be very useful for those on a budget. WP Affiliate Surge - This is a very affordable tool which let's the owners of affiliate programs add a promotional tools page where your affiliates can get their links, banners, email swipes and other things to help them make more sales of your products. Broken Link Checker - This does exactly what it says on the tin. It will check your site for broken links and notify you of any new ones, which is great because manually checking every single link on your site to make sure that the link is still good would be extremely tedious to say the least. Theme Test Drive - This plugin allows you to test out a different wordpress theme on your site in a way that doesn't affect what your visitors currently see. Meaning you can test a new theme out and perfect it before making the changes go live on your site. I'm in the process of doing this right now, so this is very timely for me. That's what caught my eye but my needs and your needs may be different so I really recommend you do go to buzzblogger.com/top-wordpress-plugins to view the entire list
