I recently attended the Empowered Podcast Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I wanted to share some key takeaways and insights from this enlightening experience with you all. The Journey to the Empowered Podcast ConferenceAttending the Empowered Podcast Conference was an exciting endeavor. I usually attend the Indy Pod Conference in New Jersey and have been to DC PodFest in the past, so this was a new experience for me. Thanks to a 20% discount code shared by Alex Sanfilippo from PodMatch, I decided to make the five and a half hour drive to North Carolina. The drive was pleasant, filled with beautiful weather and a slew of podcasts to keep me company. First Impressions and Connecting with Fellow PodcastersUpon arriving at the Hyatt in Charlotte, I checked in and immediately gravitated towards the communal table on the second floor, where conversations about podcasting were already underway. Meeting the conference founder and various podcasters felt like reconnecting with old friends. Being around people who share my passion for podcasting was a rejuvenating experience, despite my family sometimes growing weary of me mentioning the word "podcast" countless times. Setting Intentions: A Unique ApproachThe conference kicked off with a unique session on setting intentions, involving a guided visualization exercise to help us focus on our goals and what we wanted to achieve from the conference. We were provided with journals to jot down our thoughts on what we wanted to embrace and let go of, which was a first for me at any conference. This session helped frame my mind positively for the rest of the event. Networking and LearningAn exciting part of the conference was the opportunity to meet Alex Sanfilippo from PodMatch, who gave an insightful talk. One of the highlights for me was how the entire event was woven around the theme of intention and authenticity, especially relevant as my goal is to foster community growth within the podcasting sphere. Defining IntentionTo define what intention means, intention is a plan or goal aimed at achieving a specific purpose. For me, intention signifies clarity and purpose, especially in the context of my podcasts. My key takeaway was the need to be clear about our intentions and how we can be of service to our audience and guests. Refocusing and Building CommunityDuring...

Today on The Rita Made Me DO it! Show I'm talking with Kristine Goad about living out your biggest, boldest, most audacious dreams and how, no matter what your age, profession or situation in life you can reinvent yourself.  She also shares how doing the things that scared her most led her to create the Surfing Your Edge Experience, which helps women expand their comfort zones, re-envision who they are and what is possible for them - through the power of coming together to learn to surf.   Kristine Goad is a personal transformation coach and adventure retreat leader.   She gets bored easily and doesn't fit into most of the standard boxes current society provides. As a result, she's made a life out of reinventing herself, asking questions and following where they lead, and doing the thing that scares her most at any given time. She's at her best when she's in over her head and having to figure out what comes next, which is why she's usually in the middle of doing something she doesn't yet know how to do.    She calls that surfing her edge.    Along the way, Kristine has written and published a book called Your Mileage May Vary; led a fundraising team for a national environmental organization; written for magazines, newspapers, and websites; participated in the largest cross-country bicycle event in U.S. history; competed in what was at the time the largest sprint-distance triathlon event in world history...all of which led to Kristine founding the Big, Bold, Begin It Project in 2015 to help people get their dreams out of their heads and into the world and the Surfing Your Edge Experience in 2018 to help other women expand their comfort zones, re-envision who they are and what is possible for them, and surf their own edges in whatever parts of their lives they choose.    Join us as we discuss:   How Kristine went from being terrified of open water to hosting an annual surf retreat for women Why Kristine stayed in a toxic job and how that same thing may be keeping you in situations that aren't moving you forward What a palm reader told Kristine that created a series of events that took her from fundraising for a non-profit in DC to surfing the waves in Panama City If you want to have success in any area of your life or business, this is how you have to show up…. How one Facebook post got Kristine her first 6 clients and why you should do the same if you are just starting out in your business What most people don't tell you when they announce that they quit their job to start their own business Three things that enabled Kristine's first retreat to be a big success You think it's a sign to not do something bit it's most likely this… What to do if you don't fit into the box people are trying to put you in How a mistake made on her first retreat showed Kristine what she needed the most to be a powerful coach for her clients An unlikely sign of perfectionism and how it may be holding you back in your business   And so much more!   Surfing Your Edge Retreat & Group Coaching Program: http://surfingyouredge.life Kristine Goad: http://kristinegoad.com Surfing Your Edge Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/surfinyouedge Women Surfing Their Edge Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/womensurfingtheiredge/ Canva:  http://canva.com “Your Mileage May Vary” by Kristine Goad: https://store.bookbaby.com/book/your-mileage-may-vary DC Podfest:  http://dcpodfest.com American Lung Association:  http://www.lung.org “Phenomenal: A Hesitant Adventurer's Search for Wonder in the Natural World” by Leigh Ann Henion  https://www.amazon.com/Phenomenal-Hesitant-Adventurers-Search-Natural/dp/0143108034 “The Next Big Idea” podcast:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-next-big-idea/id1482067226 “The Brendon Show” podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-brendon-show/id821746377 “Positive Mindset for Entrepreneurs with Dana Wilde” podcast:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/positive-mindset-for-entrepreneurs-from-the-mind-aware/id1044864838   Join me in my FREE private Facebook community, the All-In entrepreneur: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theallinentrepreneur/   Connect with me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/ritagoodroe

Should I Even Start a Podcast? Yes, and here is why. Americans spend over 60 billion dollars a year on diet books. Now you might say that is why people write books because people buy books - because each year more and more people are getting fat. How many people move to Los Angelas to become an actor or actress or to Nashville to be Musicians. You have your talent. You have your goals. You have your unique insights and they aren't going to help or entertain anyone sitting on your computer. I'll Never Be Good As.... I've spoken about impostor syndrome in the past. Today I'm going to talk a bit about Tom Brady who some consider being the best Quarterback of all time in American football. Tom Brady decided to pursue football in college (he was good in multiple sports, but LOVED football). He went to Michigan in 1999. He didn't look at the top quarterbacks in 1999 and say, "I'll never be as good as Bret Farve, Troy Aikman, or Steve Young. Instead, he pursued football and used those quarterbacks as inspiration. You may not be as good as someone, you may actually be better - because you can learn from their history. When Your Podcast Is Stuck Today we are going to talk about getting your show unstuck. Here is a typical podcast that I run into on a regular basis. Maybe this sounds like you: Podcasting for five months Averaging about 54 downloads per episode Looking to grow your audience (we all area) Looking to make some money with your podcast It's hard to monetize a show with 50 downloads per episode. Many people don't realize that you're lucky if you get 5% of your audience to take action. That means three people will take action (if we round up). Finding Motivation to Keep Going You started your podcast cause you love your subject, and you want to talk about your subject, podcasting sounded fun, and you jumped in. Scenario: You and your cousin love to talk about your favorite TV show. You start a weekly podcast and you talk about your favorite TV show. Conclusion: This podcast is successful. You wanted to talk to your cousin about your favorite TV show with your cousin and you are. Now you want to earn some income. You changed your why. Try this: Go to an episode from three months ago and measure how many downloads you got in the first week. Then measure how many downloads you received from one of your latest episodes. I did this for someone at Libsyn and his numbers were up 20%. You Changed Your Why Now you are stuck with a podcast about a TV show that is trying to make money. I said in my previous episode about making money with your podcast that the #1 BEST way to make money with your podcast is to have a product to sell your audience. You don't have one of those. The second best way is through affiliate marketing. Aside from DVD's of the show, there may not be a ton of products related to the show that you can promote and earn a commission on the sale. This leads you to crowdfunding with a  tool like Patreon. Patreon says you might get 5% (that's three people in your case) and the average donation is $7 so you might end up with $21 for the month. That should pay your monthly media hosting bill. At least your not losing money to enjoy your hobby. If you move to a platform that offers dynamic ad insertion (where you earn .0017 cents per download) you would earn an extra thirty four cents per month. Did You Make a Mistake? Some might say you didn't plan enough. You didn't think through your podcast enough, and I'm not sure you agree with that. You started your podcast and I run into people on a regular basis who have been planning their podcast for YEARS. The six quarterbacks drafted before Brady combined to start 191 games and throw 246 touchdowns. Brady has won 201 games in his career — including four Super Bowls — and thrown 450 touchdowns ... and counting. The Beatles were formed in 1960 (Harrison, Lennon, McCartney have been together since 1958). In 1962 they got a manager to make them a bit more professional, and a music producer to help shape their sound. They didn't have their famed appearance on the Ed Sullivan TV show until 1964. That means it took four to six years of practicing their craft, going through some lineup changes (Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe, Norman Chapman, Tommy Moore, and Jimmie Nicol). They were a bit like the band Spinal Tap when it came to drummers. Keep in mind that not everyone liked the Beatles Decca Records rejected the band with the comment "Guitar groups are on the way out, Mr. Epstein." So it's OK if not everyone likes you. Who and Why? I've talked about knowing who your audience is a lot of this website, as well as knowing your why. These are the two most important questions you need to answer. If someone had said I want to start a podcast about a TV show and I want to earn a living from it in five months I would've told them to not even bother. If they had told me five years, I would explain to that you need to come up with multiple streams of income. I would also point out, that it is 100% OK to do a podcast as a hobby and enjoy yourself. What Do One of a Kind People Do? Tom Brady is a quarterback in the NFL. For my friends across the pond, forgive me as I say "Football." He is playing his 20th season this year. Brady has played in nine Super Bowls, winning six of them, the most of any player in NFL history. Due to his numerous accomplishments, records, and accolades, he is considered by many sports analysts to be the greatest quarterback of all time. When you take the phrase Greatest Of All Time you get GOAT. I did a deep dive into Brady (shout out to Monica Rivera for turning me on to Tom vs Time on Facebook). I was not surprised that a ton of his success is his attitude. What Podcasters Can Learn From Tom Brady He started as a child attending football camps. He has a genuine, insatiable love of the game of Football. In high school, Brady was not good enough to start on the 0–8 JV team, which had not scored a touchdown all year. He created highlight tapes and sent them to schools he considered attending. This led to strong interest from many football programs around the nation. He joins the Michigan football team as their seventh quarterback. He had over 100 practices his first year not to mention the hundreds of hours of meetings to prepare him to play. He was a backup for two years. When he finally got to play in a game his pass was a 45-yard interception resulting in the other team getting a touchdown. He wasn't sure if the coach would ever put him in again. At one point, Brady hired a sports psychologist to help him cope with frustration and anxiety and even considered transferring to California. He worked closely with assistant athletic director Greg Harden, who met with Brady every week to build his confidence and to maximize his performance on the field. This aided Tom in believing in himself. In his first year at Michigan, he played one game with a rating of 63.7. He sought guidance on a weekly basis The next three years his rating was 137, 133, 138. Brady was selected by the New England Patriots with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of 2000 NFL Draft Tom Brady realizes that there are many people that want his job, so he works year-round on his game. He realizes he is in a "What have you done for me? business."In investments, there is a line that states "Past performance does not guarantee future results. " He earns his position every day. He cares deeply and has stated that losing super bowls is something he never forgets. He LOVES the game. Why else with someone with an estimated $180 million dollar net worth be putting his body on the line. He understands how to set priorities. He will say, My family is number one, and football is "One A." When its football time, he is all football. When it's family time, he is all in on his family. He has evolved over the years and hires coaches and experts to help out. He is looking for any kind of improvement, even if it's only a one percent improvement. The six quarterbacks drafted before Brady combined to start 191 games and throw 246 touchdowns. Brady has won 201 games in his career — including four Super Bowls — and thrown 450 touchdowns ... and counting. Another saying from Brady is staying hungry- stay humble. He often gives back to the community. Getting Your Podcast Unstuck Tom Brady LOVES to evaluate his performance. He is looking for ANY way to improve his performance. You should do the same. I talked about evaluating your own show in the past. Go back to some old episodes and listen with fresh ears. I recently went back through some old email sequences and found some HORRIBLE mistakes. Go listen to your show with fresh ears. Poll your audience. I just got a poll from the show Chapo House who is making $141,042 PER MONTH and their poll amounted to "What are we doing right, and what do you wish we would do less of." Do you have the courage to send out that survey? If you're struggling with finding topics, then take some time and search for new blogs, youtube channels, podcasts, and other sources of information that you might want to comment on. Take action to DO things that you can talk about first hand. Go to where your audience is and make friends and start relationships with people Make sure your show is everywhere. I'll be talking about this on DC Podfest. I am saddened when someone signs up for the Podcast Review Show or Podcast Rodeo and I ask for a link to your show and they send a link to their episode in Apple. What if I was on android like 80% of people in Europe? Start a Facebook group, or join a Facebook group around your topic. This may feed you with ideas, or introduce you to people you may want to interview. What If I Change Direction? If you change direction (and first, yes you can) you need to have the stomach for it. Why? Because not everyone is going to like your new direction and leave. Are you OK with that? You need to be because you need to realize that anyone who leaves is not your target audience. Then you need to realize that it is a bit like starting over, and it may take some time to get the attention of your target audience and get them to talk about you. Take A Long Hard Look in the Mirror It may be that you've run out of gas about your topic. Maybe you've said all you need to say. Very popular shows like Game of Thrones, Seinfeld, Cheers, all came to an end, and eventually, all podcats will come to an end (unless you hand it off to a new host). Not all mics are created equal and it's important to master the one that you're using for your podcast. Submit your podcast - the early entry deadline is October 25, 2019. A YouTube 'podcast network' We're not against this, but we certainly don't think the terminology is correct. Best Practices: Say it with us: quiet recordings are better recordings. When you start with a clean recording, the end-product will be better. Keep the recording area as quiet as you can while recording. We know, not always an easy feat. Have some “softer” things on the walls; carpeted rooms are good too. A closet full of clothes hanging up works good for a solo recording. Beware, you might get a tad sweaty. Always test a recording for noise and/or other issues before committing to do a long show. Just because your setup didn't change doesn't mean your environment didn't. Any crackling or buzzing? Record a little on the low side (level wise) and boost it in post. (Auphonic is a good choice) It’s better to have it too low than too high in most cases. Mic technique: be careful about echos off things like monitors walls. Sorry for the delayed episode this week! If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have seen that I went to DC Podfest. And the first day I was there, I woke up with the beginnings of a cold. Luckily, I was able to get a hold of a bottle of Zicam fairly quickly and stave off the cold for a few days … until I got home. And then, it hit. This week has been a bit of a fever dream for me, but it made me start to wonder about some of the things we say when we're sick and the origins, so get ready for a bit of an etymology episode. But as long as there have been humans, humans have been getting sick, and many of these idioms carry a lot of unverifiable history with them. And, much like the cure for the common cold, the true origin stories of these phrases may never be found. You're listening to The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History of the Ordinary. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Sick Sayings. Find out more about The Story Behind Book! Are you a member of The Podcast Brunch Club? Your Favorite Podcast Events – Episode 162   This week, I wanted to review your favorite podcast events. I put out the call for suggestions. Most replies that I received said, "Erik, I haven't attended any podcast events."   That's a shame. There are quite a few great gatherings that can really help you grow.   BENEFITTING FROM EVENTS There were a few suggestions. I also received an e-mail from Cynthia, who was really dejected after attending a conference.   Dear Erik,   I actually attended the National Religious Broadcasters Convention twice hoping to find a way to boost my show and possibly find a radio station that would want to pick it up.   Sadly, I spent a lot of money, but didn't feel I was able to justify the expense. I was looking for people who were interested in helping me, but all I met were people looking for people who could enrich themselves.   It wasn't a total waste because some of the sessions were informative and educational. However, I didn't have one contact that materialized into anything lasting. I may have found some guests, but they were just "one time guests".   I appreciate your ideas of how to have a real conversation with others for a lasting impact. Podcasting can feel very lonely. I don't have a team working with me.   There will always be people who want to have us buy their services, but there's not much to buy until we have a funding stream.   Sincerely, Cynthia Home Front www.CynthiaDavis.net   GIVE FIRST When you attend an event, I think you need to approach it differently. Seek to give. Seek to help. What you send out will return to you.   Cynthia, it is time for some tough love.   You say you were "looking for people who were interested in helping me, but all I met were people looking for people who could enrich themselves." You mention that you "didn't have one contact that materialized into anything lasting. I may have found some guests, but they were just 'one time guests'".   Rarely do people go to events wondering, "Hmm. Who can I help today." That means you can stand out and be unique by asking that very question.   You can have a real conversation with others for lasting impact by seeking to help them. Talk about them. Discover their struggles. Where you can you help them succeed.   The theory of reciprocity will naturally take effect. People will be more open to helping you if you first help them.   However, don't expect reciprocity. Let it happen organically, and don't be upset if it doesn't. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.   MY UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP Being in radio for nearly 30 years, I have attended many, many conferences. I have attended conferences for radio, podcasting, coaching hockey and others. The opportunity to learn and grow excites me.   My first conference came when I was in college. As the Music Director of the college radio station (and a member of a rap group), I attended the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City put on by the College Music Journal.   It was the summer of 1989. October 26th at the Vista Hotel in New York City at the foot of the World Trade Center.   George Clinton and Ice-T were the keynote speakers. I had a great chat with Ice-T in the lobby of the hotel.   One of my most bizarre relationships began at the CMJ Music Marathon that year.   Each night during the conference, there would be music showcases all around town. Most were free with your conference pass.   Doc and I grabbed a cab and went to NYU to see a hip-hop show. Doc was the other half of my rap duo. Yep. True story.   On the bill that night were quite a few artists. Third Bass, Black Sheep, Young Black Teenagers and others performed. Heavy D. was in the audience checking out the show. The Geto Boys even tried to get up on stage at the end of the show before the sound guy cut their mics.   Third Bass was made up of MC Serch, Prime Minister Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich. Third Bass was also notable as one of the first, successful, interracial hip-hop groups.   "Pop Goes The Weasel" was the biggest single of Third Bass' career. They also had a minor hit with "The Gas Face" from "The Cactus Album". It was their first album, which the group had just released a month after this concert.   On my show on the college station, I had been playing Third Bass for a few months by this time. Their first single was a tune called "Steppin' To The A.M." It sampled Pink Floyd's "Time". I played the tune a lot on the radio at a time when rap and hip-hop were not part of the mainstream. This was 1989. My airplay helped the song climbed to #5 on the U.S. Rap Chart in some small way.   Jump ahead 17 years to 2006. By this time I was the Program Director of a Top 40 radio station. Third Bass had broken up for a second time 6 years earlier. MC Serch had left his job as a morning radio host to work full-time at Serchlite Music, a promotion company he ran.   Serch was calling radio stations to talk to Program Directors and trying to convince them to play particular singles. I happen to be one of his weekly calls.   During our first call, Serch tells me my name sounds familiar. Johnson isn't the most unique name, so I figure he is just trying to be friendly. He asks where I have worked in the past, that maybe our paths had crossed before.   Unlike many in the business, my radio career had not taken me all over the country. I had worked in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska at this point in my career. That is what I told Serch.   We got to talking about my start at the college station in Lincoln. I told him I started one of the first shows dedicated to rap and hip-hop in the state.   ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is when it happened.   Serch said, "That's it! You were a huge supporter for us back then!"   I said, "Oh, yeah. I played the crud out of 'Steppin' To The A.M.' I loved that record."   That's when Serch said, "Yeah, you did. We thanked you in the credits of that album for all of your support."   What!?! I'm in the liner notes? How did I not know this?   I said, "Are you kidding me? I didn't know that."   "You bet," he told me. "You were a big part of getting us off the ground."   That night, I went home and got out my "Cactus Album" CD. Sure enough, there I was in the liner notes.   I had made a connection and difference at that conference 17 years earlier and hadn't even realized it.   And that's my point. When you are at a conference, you never know what might happen or who you might meet. The meeting may not mean anyting at the time. It may not make a difference in the next decade. However, it may just change somebody's life in ways you never intended.   When you are at a gathering, seek to give and help first. It will all come back around.   Cynthia did say, "It wasn't a total waste because some of the sessions were informative and educational." So, where can you find podcast events to make meaningful connections?   SOME OF THE TOP PODCAST EVENTS Many people who responded to my ask haven't attended podcasting events. This is a list I have gathered from a few of the best podcasting minds in the industry. I have attended a few of these. I also received recommendations from Dave Jackson at School of Podcasting and Daniel J. Lewis at The Audacity To Podcast and Podcasters' Society.   Ticket prices and info are as accurate as I could find as of this date. All are subject to change and the accuracy is not guaranteed by any means. Please visit the site for complete details, as they change quite often.   Podcast Movement August 23 – 25, 2017 Anaheim, California   "We've formatted PM17 to cater to anyone who is currently involved with, or looking to get into, podcasting and the podcast industry. Google events in your area. Look for meet-ups. Get out to one of these great events.   In the episode last week, we discussed the best way to make connections at podcast events.
