In this episode of the PME Podcast, I interview Wesley Morgan. Wes is a journalist and author, who wrote a book called The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan's Pech Valley. The book draws on hundreds of interviews and firsthand accounts from former commanding officers to the soldiers that spent months in the field. The Hardest Place provides a unique insight into many of the mistakes that drew the American military deeper into eastern Afghanistan as well as the country more broadly. In reflecting on and learning from 20 years of war in Afghanistan, this book is a must read. Topics of discussion include: How the U.S. got involved in the Pech Valley and how operations grew larger over time The evolution of American strategy from a counterterrorism mission to counterinsurgency The difficulty of obtaining accurate and reliable intelligence How the military got caught in the middle of tribal disputes Challenges with command and control The U.S. experience in the Pech vs. the Soviet experience The arrival of ISIS in the Pech Valley and how their presence changed operations How the complexity of the operational environment hindered U.S. efforts in the Pech and Afghanistan overall Follow Wes on Twitter: @wesleymorgan Check out the book The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan's Pech Valley HELP SPREAD THE WORD! At the end of the their retreat in Fiji, Pacific Islands Forum leaders have concluded that the organisation stands at a critical juncture in its history. There is renewed hope that the islands can work with Australia to combat climate change and there's a push to host the UN Climate Summit in the region in 2024. A multi-lateral security deal proposed by China has floundered, and the door is open for Kiribati to return to the Forum fold.

https://twitter.com/wesleysmorgan?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (Wesley Morgan) is a military affairs reporter who covered the Pentagon for two and a half years at Politico. He previously worked as a freelance journalist in Washington, D.C., Iraq, and Afghanistan, contributing stories to The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic and other publications. He is an alumnus of Princeton University. In the wake of our withdrawl from Afghanistan, I - like many of you - have done a lot of soul-searching, navel gazing, and head-scratching about the war: our goals, our execution, our exit. That's why I was glad to have Wes Morgan on the show today. Wes is the author of https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/227894/the-hardest-place-by-wesley-morgan/ (The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan's Pech Valley), a book that I place alongside Steve Coll's books and Thomas Barfield's Afghanistan as invaluable contributions to understanding the country and its problem sets. Wes started the book as an embedded reporter in 2010 and continued writing it, traveling to Afghanistan and interviewing folks for the next decade or so. He was there for the first draft of history, but his book has the benefit of perspective and context for how the war would play out. I would go so far as to say that if you haven't read The Hardest Place yet, you may not fully understand or be able to articulate all the dysfunction and nuance that you might have found during your deployments there. Or maybe that's just me and I'm projecting. But either way, any serious student of military history or our time in Afghanistan or proponent of COIN cannot afford to ignore the book. Wes wisely focuses on Pech Valley and Kunar Province, without trying to sum up all the battle spaces inside Afghanistan, so there are certain problem sets that don't translate completely to other provinces. But the Venn diagram of problems in Pech Valley overlaps enough with the rest of Afghanistan to provide a useful insight into many aspects of the war, theater-wide. An arrest was made in the death of a former politician's daughter during a home invasion last week. Kentucky State Police spotted suspect Shannon Gilday, 23, walking along Barnes Mill Road near I-75. Gilday is accused of breaking into Welsey Morgan's multi-million dollar home after climbing scaffolding set up for home repairs. Attorney Jordan Morgan, 32, was shot as she slept in bed. The victim's father reportedly suffered non-lethal injuries after exchanging gunfire with Gilday. Gilday fled the scene in a vehicle. Wesley Morgan has been quoted as saying he believes a “doomsday-style” bunker at their mansion may have made their home a target. Shannon Gilday's mother says her son "has not been of sound mind the last couple of weeks, distraught with the certainty a nuclear war is imminent." Police have not confirmed that motive. Gilday is now charged with murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree assault, and attempted murder. In this interview Matt Crawford speaks with author Wesley Morgan about his book, The Hardest Place. This is an exhaustively researched and compellingly written account of the American war experience in the Pech Valley. A microcosm of the war itself, Morgan fuses reporting embed trips, hundreds of interviews from the American and Afghan perspective to detail The Pech Valley experience. This is a complex topic with a lot of moving parts, but Morgan's accounting and writing style makes it easy to digest and impossible to put down.
In this week's episode of Horns of a Dilemma, we continue with a panel discussion that follows author Wesley Morgan's discussion of his book, The Hardest Place. If you haven't listened to last week's episode, which includes Morgan's book talk, you may want to do so, since this week's episode includes discussion of events that are covered in Morgan's talk. This event was held at the University of Texas, Austin, and sponsored by the Clements Center and the McCombs School of Business.
In this episode of Horns of a Dilemma, the first of two parts, author Wesley Morgan discusses his book, The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan's Pech Valley. Morgan has written an extraordinary biography of the American presence in Afghanistan, focusing on one particular place, and through the history of the American war in that place, capturing the 20-year American war effort in it heroism, nobility, hubris, and folly. Morgan spoke at the University of Texas, Austin, in an event jointly sponsored by the Clements Center and the McCombs School of Business. He is introduced by Paul Edgar, Associate Director of the Clements Center.

What lessons should the United States military take from twenty years of war in Afghanistan? This episode focuses on US efforts in the Pech valley, where the United States waged an enduring counterinsurgency and counterterrorism campaign over many years. Our guests, Wesley Morgan and retired Colonel Bill Ostlund, argue that the Pech represents a microcosm of the broader US war effort in Afghanistan, and that the collapse of the Afghan government following the withdrawal of US forces from the country in August 2021 was foreseeable by looking at what happened in the valley after US forces withdrew years earlier. Join us for a not-to-be-missed episode of The Scuttlebutt. For years, The Pech was the most kinetic spot on the planet - so why would a college student risk his life by spending a semester abroad embedded with our military? To answer this question and many more is special guest, Wesley Morgan, author of THE HARDEST PLACE: THE AMERICAN MILITARY ADRIFT IN AFGHANISTAN'S PECH VALLEY. Also joining us is Army and Afghan War veteran, John Hawes. Both gentlemen bring a deep and personal knowledge of the military's struggles and sparse successes in the Pech to The Scuttlebutt. Did we mention this isn't to be missed? For our audio listeners: head to veteransbreakfastclub.org/scuttlebutt to watch the video version of this week's episode and read more. And a big thank you to D&D Metal Recycling and Auto Salvage for sponsoring the Scuttlebutt! https://danddautosalvage.com/
