Full version of the episode on Patreon. Labor Skate Shop for Living Proof Radio. Opened in 2012 by James Rewolinski, Labor was founded to serve as a core skate shop for New York City. Before the rise of mainstream media and the explosion of skateboarding into the global spotlight, skate shops were the center of the skateboarding community. They weren't just retail spaces but epicenters of culture where people went to immerse themselves. Preceding Labor, Autumn Skate Shop, which opened in the early 2000s and closed in 2008, was one of the pioneering shops in the city. Located near Tompkins Square Park, it played a key role in nurturing the local scene, serving as the go-to shop in the area. Autumn created a community around New York's skateboarding culture at a time when the city lacked these locations and commercialized skateboarding had not yet taken over. The closure of Autumn Skate Shop in 2008 left a void in the Manhattan skate scene. Labor Skate Shop stepped in just a few years later to fill that gap, continuing the legacy of community-focused, independent skate shops that prioritize local talent and the spirit of skateboarding. In a way, Labor is the torchbearer for what Autumn Skateshop represented—a space for skaters to gather, share ideas, and push the scene forward in an otherwise commercialized urban landscape. Labor has played a critical role in shaping the identity of New York City's skateboarding and while there Brooklyn location has recently closed, the doors of their Manhattan shop remain open. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com
Meet Ty Neilson, a beacon of resilience who has risen above his challenging past to illuminate the path of a better life, and skate shop ownership. In this episode, we unravel his journey from a tumultuous upbringing in a government housing area, to finding solace and community in Skateboarding… and Cricket. Ty reflects on the importance of local skate shops as community pillars that not only provide the tangible items required to skate, but moreover, the intangible elements; a sense of belonging, inspiration and significant cultural influence.Ty's journey is one of perseverance and commitment. He recounts the day he chose to walk away from financial security by quitting his job as a concrete cutter, and spending all his house deposit money to open a skate shop. A small price to pay in order to follow a dream, and not work for someone else's.From the emotional ties to skateboarding culture and its role in the Olympics to the societal judgments and stereotypes we all grapple with, this conversation is a heartfelt tribute to personal evolution, and why some things just aren't worth stressing about. The crucial differences which distinguish human societies and human beings are not biological. They are cultural. This quote by Ruth Benedict proves to be true time and time again. Society is determined by how that group of people operate. Each person belongs to at least one culture, and often belong to several subcultures at the same time. And yet, with all of these different cultures out there, people tend not to know how a person from another culture operates. Cultures can teach us a whole new world view, and while that doesn't necessarily mean we need to adopt that culture, it can certainly help us relate to the people in that culture. Mentoring is often a bridge between cultures. The mentor will more than likely have a different set of experiences in their life than their mentee will. Zach and John are back this week to talk through what kinds of things different cultures can teach us, how we can be open to learning from other cultures in our mentoring relationships, and how all of that factors in to Zach walking into a skate shop in Waco.Reach out to John:john@middleman-ministries.orgCheck out Middleman Ministries:https://www.middleman-ministries.orgPurchase the You Can Mentor book: You Can Mentor: How to Impact Your Community, Fulfill the Great Commission, and Break Generational Cursesyoucanmentor.com

Skateboarding is local. The skate shop in your town is the adrenaline-fueled heart and punk rock soul of the skateboarding community. It's where you buy your gear (ahem, where you *should* buy your gear), where you learn board mechanics, and it's your path to going pro. Meet two guys running local skate shops in the Midwest and building the culture of skateboarding one skater at a time.CREDITS: Center of Gravity is hosted by Brenton Gomez.
