THE PLAIN SENSE OF THINGS After the leaves have fallen, we return To a plain sense of things. It is as if We had come to an end of the imagination, Inanimate in an inert savoir. It is difficult even to choose the adjective For this blank cold, this sadness without cause. The great structure has become a minor house. No turban walks across the lessened floors. The greenhouse never so badly needed paint. The chimney is fifty years old and slants to one side. A fantastic effort has failed, a repetition In a repetitiousness of men and flies. Yet the absence of the imagination had Itself to be imagined. The great pond, The plain sense of it, without reflections, leaves, Mud, water like dirty glass, expressing silence Of a sort, silence of a rat come out to see, The great pond and its waste of the lilies, all this Had to be imagined as an inevitable knowledge, Required, as a necessity requires. Brad Parks "Closer Than You Know": Brad Parks delivers another riveting, emotionally powerful stand-alone domestic suspense thriller perfect for fans of The Couple Next Door and What She Knew. Disaster, Melanie Barrick was once told, is always closer than you know. It was a lesson she learned the hard way growing up in the constant upheaval of foster care. But now that she's survived into adulthood--with a loving husband, a steady job, and a beautiful baby boy named Alex--she thought that turmoil was behind her. Until one Tuesday evening when she goes to pick up Alex from childcare only to discover he's been removed by Social Services. And no one will say why. It's a terrifying scenario for any parent, but doubly so for Melanie, who knows the unintended horrors of what everyone coldly calls "the system." Her nightmare mushrooms when she arrives home to learn her house has been raided by sheriff's deputies, who have found enough cocaine to send Melanie to prison for years. The evidence against her is overwhelming, and if Melanie can't prove her innocence, she'll lose Alex forever. Meanwhile, assistant commonwealth's attorney Amy Kaye--who has been assigned Melanie's case--has her own troubles. She's been dogged by a cold case no one wants her to pursue: a serial rapist who has avoided detection by wearing a mask and whispering his commands. Over the years, he has victimized dozens of women. Including Melanie. Yet now her attacker might be the key to her salvation . . . or her undoing.

I am so honored to have her as my guest on this very special, preview episode of the LIVE INSPIRED Podcast! If you've ever heard me speak, you've heard a lot about the impact my mom has had on my life. But for those of you who've not heard me speak, here is just one example. My mom and dad's unauthorized biography of my life, Overwhelming Odds, is what encouraged me to accept, own and celebrate my scars and my story. As if that wasn't enough! The initial 200 copies they printed to share with friends and family has resulted in my becoming a professional speaker nearly 10 years ago and the subsequent sale of more than 60,000 copies... Get your copy of Overwhelming Odds here. (Save 15% with code Podcast) Get your copy of my #1 National Bestseller ON FIRE here. ON FIRE Book Launch Party video - start at minute 58:25 to see me play my mom's favorite song on the piano. To close each interview in a special way, I created the LIVE INSPIRED 7 segment. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? I would give large amounts to my kids...and family and friends who could really use the help. I'd get something really going with Parkinson's Disease Research. And I would go on a river boat cruise in Europe. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My bible. Being a bible teacher for the last 18 years, I know that is where our true stories lie. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Martin Luther King. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? My mom used to always tell me, "Put on your lipstick and you can go anywhere!" It has helped me through life. I'll keep this one lighthearted! 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? With relationships, work at letting any hurt feelings or harsh words go. Put them behind you and just keep going. 7. It's been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Gilly Macmillan, bestselling author of WHAT SHE KNEW, joins us this week to chat about her upcoming thriller THE PERFECT GIRL. Listen in as Gilly tells us about writing one ending instead of three, the music genre equivalent of a thriller novel (you’ll never guess), and which novel she thinks about the most.
This week Lee and Eddie are absolutely star struck when they interview the amazing Gilly Macmillan, author of What She Knew, and The Perfect Girl. Lee finally agrees to read a book written before the invention of AstroTurf and Eddie picks up a book younger than the selfie stick, the latest in Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. Tune in next week to see how they're handling the challenge! The post 1.30 | Interview with Gilly Macmillan, Old book New book & Book learning appeared first on Crime Time.
This week, Lee has finally finished What She Knew and wants you to know what she thinks! Eddie, who hasn't had her coffee yet and is still wearing her fire chief Donald Duck pyjamas hasn't read a book this week, but has some opinions about crime authors keeping up with the times. They also discuss their favourite red herrings in mystery fiction. The post 1.23 | What She Knew, Red Herrings, & Oh my gosh what’s that over there?! appeared first on Crime Time.
In this episode Lee and Eddie talk Practical Magic, speculate about What She Knew, and ask themselves how easy to guess is too easy to guess when reading mystery? Eddie geeks out about her favourite bird-like dinosaur and Lee reminisces about the good old days (like ten episodes ago), when they were reading Crime Time's favourite trashy author.
