A "swing away from Trump" may be beginning, former White House communications director Ben La Bolt tells PRWeek's Beyond the Noise podcast. What are the lessons for comms? As Trump completes his first 100 days in office, PRWeek catches up with La Bolt, who was director of comms under President Biden from 2023 until last year.Beyond the Noise looks at some of the biggest issues affecting communications and PR. Download the podcast via Apple, Spotify, or listen on your favourite platform.La Bolt (pictured below) - currently president of the policy and strategic comms agency Bully Pulpit International - discusses his experience working in White House comms and how it changed from his time as an aide in the Obama administration to his tenure under Biden. He contrasts this to the current approach of White House communications under Trump.La Bolt reflects on signs of a mood shift among the public, businesses and institutions away from Trump and his controversial policies, and examines the lessons for communicators. In particular, he emphasises the importance of brands reaffirming their values in these changing times. On AI, he fears the technology will "greatly accelerate" dis- and mis-information - especially ahead of the next US Presidential Election in 2028 - while also recognising AI's benefits. In addition, La Bolt discusses what's ahead for Bully Pulpit International, including possible new acquisitions - last November the firm announced it had bought UK-based comms agency Seven Hills alongside market research business Message House. I help them figure out where to start and what to do next so they can plan and write the book they can't stop thinking about. My mission is to add more color to the bookshelves by helping Black + Brown writers get clear on their ideas and confident in their writing skills so they can share their experiences, expertise, and stories with the world. My vision: Books by us are as widely known, accessible, and revered as the “classics.”I am a nerdy, intuitive, creative soul with a notebook obsession that is kind of getting out of hand. (Okay, it was out of hand when I had two full boxes of journals during our last move.) I'm also a professional nap-taker, a recovering hot cheetos puffs addict, and I've watched Parks and Rec so many times I can listen to it like a podcast and know exactly what's going on. And after a 7-year career as a licensed architect (it was a vibe, just not the one for me), I returned to my first love: books. I got certified in Nonfiction and Fiction Book Coaching through Author Accelerator, and I've been living the dream ever since.I intentionally work with mostly BIPOC because I know there are so many of us who have s**t to say, and there aren't a whole lot of people helping us get it said. So, I made my writers' (and my own) expression my job. Three years later, it's still the best job in the world. How do we support refugees to thrive in their second home? That's the question we're answering in a special edition of Change Makers, hosted by the fantastic journalist and broadcaster Edie Lush. For the first in a new series of the podcast exploring some of the most pressing issues of our time, Edie speaks with three campaigning voices for refugees about why it matters to ensure that we support refugees with human-centred policy and ensure that they can play an important role in the UK's social and economic story. Amos Schonfield is the founder and CEO of Our Second Home – a charity that Seven Hills has been supporting for the past 18 months. It is a youth movement aimed at empowering refugees and asylum seekers to flourish here in the UK and build the next generation of leaders. Amos shares the family history that makes this cause personal to him and what he believes we can all do to help reshape the narrative around refugees. Taban Shoresh OBE is founder of The Lotus Flower and a refugee who escaped the Kurdish genocide as a child. Today, she supports survivors of conflict and displacement through projects focused on education skills training, peacebuilding initiatives for women and income-generating projects. A former Change Makers guest, she returns to share her story of coming to the UK and why she believes it's more important than ever for us to be welcoming to refugees.  Lord Alf Dubs is a Peer in the House of Lords and a long-time refugee campaigner, who came to the UK on the Kindertransport from Czechoslovakia, following the Nazi invasion of his birth country in 1938. Having first appeared on Change Makers in 2021, he joins us again to reflect on how Britain has changed in terms of its attitudes over the past 75 years and why he continues to make the case for refugees even at the age of 91. We hope you enjoy this episode and something different to our usual offering. We'll be exploring further vital issues alongside Edie in the new year, so look out for much more. Seven Hills has been fundraising for Our Second Home since 2023, raising more than £2000. In this week's study, I continue in Chapter 17 verses 8 and 9. Before I get into the study I reach out to the Baltimore Oriole Fans and enlighten them about their new owner David Rubenstein, who happens to be the co-founder of the Carlyle Group. 8   And go into perdition = That is, its end will be destruction. It will not be permanent, but will be overthrown and destroyed.  And they that dwell on the earth = The inhabitants of the earth generally; Shall wonder = It will be so contrary to the regular course of events, so difficult of explanation, so remarkable in itself, as to excite attention and surprise.Whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world = The idea seems to be, that those whose names are written in the book of life, or who are truly the friends of Yahweh, would not be drawn off in admiration of the beast, or in rendering homage to it.When they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is = That is, the power that once was mighty; that had declined to such a state that it became, as it were, extinct; and that was revived again with so much of its original strength, that it might be said that it still exists. The fact of its being revived in this manner, as well as the nature of the power itself, seemed suited to excite this admiration. In chapter 13, the Beast comes up out of the Abyss, and is therefore, clearly, superhuman. During the first half of the week he is in his mortal stage. In the last half he is in his superhuman stage; for in chapter 13:3, he is seen as having been "wounded to death." But, here, in chapter 17, we are taken back, and are further informed as to the past, present, and future of the Beast, (1) He "WAS," in his mortal stage.  (2) He "IS NOT," for he (at the point of time to which the vision refers) had been assassinated: i.e., had "received his deadly wound," by which he was "wounded to death," and died (13:3).  (3) He "SHALL BE PRESENT," for he "is about to ascend out of the Abyss." The Image in Dan 2 is clearly marked as consisting of five parts:—1. verse 32. "This image's head was fine gold, (one) 2. verse 32. his breast and his arms of silver, (two) 3. verse 32. his belly and his thighs of brass, (three) 4. verse 33. his legs of iron (four) 5. verse 33. his feet part of iron and part of clay." (five). But strange as it may seem, the City of Jerusalem as it existed in the time of Yahshua Messiah was also reckoned to be the "City of Seven Hills." If one starts with the Mount of Olives just to the east of the main City of Jerusalem (but still reckoned to be located within the environs of Jerusalem), there are three summits to that Mount of Olives:The northern summit (hill) is called Scopus [Hill 1],The middle summit (hill) was called Nob [Hill 2],The highest point of Olivet itself, and the southern summit (hill) was called in the Holy Scriptures the "Mount of Corruption" or "Mount of Offence" [Hill 3] (II Kings 23:13).On the middle ridge between the Kedron and the Tyropoeon Valleys there was (formerly) in the south "Mount Zion" [Hill 4] (the original "Mount Zion" and not the later southwest hill that was later called by that name),The "Ophel Mount" [Hill 5],To the north of that the "Rock" around which "Fort Antonia" was built [Hill 6],And finally, there was the southwest hill itself [Hill 7] that finally became known in the time of Simon the Hasmonean as the new "Mount Zion." This makes "Seven Hills" in all.Join me as we go Chapter by Chapter, Verse by Verse, Unraveling the Words of Yahweh!Have any questions? Feel free to email me at keitner@netzero.net

The new FAFSA is meant to make applying for college aid easier, but not everyone can access it yet

A new online application designed to make applying for federal student aid easier went live last month, but not everyone has been able to access it. The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, typically opens at the beginning of October, but it was delayed three months due to the launch of the new application. Then, a few days before the launch date, the Department of Education announced that a soft launch would continue until all of the bugs in the new application were fixed. As of 6:30 p.m. January 4, the department had received over half a million successful submissions, according to a spokesperson. Every year, more than 17 million students fill out the FAFSA, which uses financial information from students and their families to determine whether they can get financial aid from the federal government to pay for college. When Nancy Dunn of Seven Hills, Ohio, got access to the application through her phone on January 6, she immediately ran to her computer to complete it, only to find it was unavailable again. The beta testing-like process has complicated financial aid advisors' communication with students, said Helen Faith, director of the Office of Financial Aid at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Usually, Faith's team sends emails to let students know when they should start applying and what they should keep in mind for their application. But that's been challenging this year. The Department of Education did not initially say when or for how long the application would be available. People are using the #fafsa hashtag to share their experiences and frustrations on social media. Katherine Beeman has tried at least 20 times to access the FAFSA application for her daughter. “I just need to get it done because if I have to supplement her aid, I need to plan ahead,” she said. Dunn said the FAFSA process reminded her of Ticketmaster's issues with concert tickets earlier this year. However, unlike getting tickets to see Taylor Swift, she said, everyone should get access to the FAFSA. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Ishtar Azzawi calls this her planting season. It's fitting because this jiu-jitsu champ, and our guest, who has represented her country Iraq in the sport while living abroad all her life had always felt that her true calling had gone unanswered. So, last year, she decided to pack her life in the UAE and head home to Baghdad. The planting season symbolises more than just a departure from the comfort of a privileged life and unrestricted access to resources in professional sport for her. It signifies a profound shift in purpose and towards embracing her roots, and marks the inception of a new chapter of sowing the seeds of social change in Iraq through another sport - skateboarding. Remarkably, venturing into unfamiliar territory as an amateur skateboarder herself, Azzawi founded Baghdad Skate Girls in December with the aim of bringing the transformative power of skateboarding to women in Iraq. The benefits of introducing the sport in war-torn and war-scarred countries is well-documented. Within that backdrop in Iraq, Baghdad Skate Girls has been fostering resilience, confidence and community, particularly for young women challenging societal norms. In Part 1 of this episode, Ishtar shares why she had to move to Iraq in search of fulfilment and her aspiration to build foundations for young athletes with Olympic dreams. We discuss how one Instagram post began a skateboarding movement in Baghdad, and how it has been received by society. And while the first steps to building a skateboarding community have been taken, Ishtar tells us about the challenges and resources needed to grow and flourish. Also, don't forget to check out Part 2 next where she discusses her journey into jiu-jitsu and some pre-fight rituals.
