Today Pete speaks to Alison Trethewey-Smith, she lives in Kent in the UK. Her career originally was based in London in stockbroking but she has had many different directions since then. An emotional episode; Alison talks about the start of her career, being a mother, the sudden illness of her husband and her journey to where she is now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Alison feels she has been on a massive journey her entire life. She loves travelling and has been extensively around the world but has always lived in the UK. When Alison worked in the city she would do a 4 hour commute to work, she did this for 12 years. She found working in the city fun but also very stressful. She found over time that this lifestyle became exhausting. Alison decided to have a baby with her husband and between them figure out a plan so she did not have to go back to work. Alison absolutely loved having a baby, life felt perfect to her. But several months later her life completely changed when her husband fell very ill. Her husband Tony was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It was an incredibly difficult time in her life only made easier by her beautiful son Thomas who sprinkled their lives with happiness in such a sad time. Sadly after multiple treatment options Tony lost his battle with cancer. Alison has always found that her mum is the one that has always supported her emotionally. Alison discovered that she had years of programming that lead her to exhaustion and burnout. She had to spend time unlearning so many habits on her journey to health. Alison’s fire in the belly is to have her own retreat. Where she can have people come and learn from her and have treatment from various practitioners she knows that can help them make their life the best it can be. To change people’s lives for the better. BEST MOMENTS “Changing the world to a healthier place, getting people to see that it’s within their remit to be able to make their life better and healthier” “I left work and felt elated” “That is how my life was at that time…I had happiness mixed in with the sadness” “If you think there’s a chance you just do it” “I believe we are put on this earth for a reason and I believe that my fire in my belly is to help people to change their lives for the better” “Children are becoming depressed and that’s not on” VALUABLE RESOURCES Subscribe to Fire In The Belly Podcast on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061)! As teased in the previous episode, Michael has given Sydney cash to arrange for one of Lauren's ladies to go to San Diego and videotape herself seducing her. Sydney's not so sure that Robert -- who's really in love with Jane! -- will be such an easy mark, but then she also sends a young Famke Janssen to play the role of horny married business traveler looking for no-strings-attached fun, so...Sydney. Come on. Jane's viewing of the tape has the expected result: she throws Robert out just hours ahead of the deadline she and Robert had both agreed she'd be turfing Michael. He just may have overplayed his hand with one of the other women he's scorned. When Alison goes over Amanda's head to get the MICROCOMP account back, we meet Amanda's boss, Bruce Teller (Stanley Kamel, the future Tony Marchette on Beverly Hills, 90210). He kindly recommends that Amanda take a couple of personal days to process everything that's going on with her dad, during which time Alison less kindly snakes one of the accounts Amanda's been neglecting. Amanda apparently touches down in Hawaii only to get right back on a return flight (at least poor Jake got to experience ten hours' worth of First Class?) to save her job, warning Billy that if he doesn't control his woman, Amanda's going to use every weapon she has against Alison, including the fact of Billy and Amanda's fornication while Billy and Alison were on a break. Reed crashes on Jo's couch while apartment-hunting in L.A., creeps her out by (a) snooping around her place while she's not there and (b) pulling her gun on her as a joke when he finds it. Can he get it in? Find out if Reed's one of the winners in our podcast on "Michael's Game"!Visual AidsVisual Aids S02.E17Discussion & Show NotesDiscussion and show notes for this episode can be viewed on this episode's page on AgainWithThisPodcast.com.Support AWT On PatreonThank you to all our supporters! My guest this month on the ResourcefulHDR podcast is Dr. Alison Rice, Deputy Director of the Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform at CSIRO. I met Alison through the magic of Twitter and she kindly agreed to share her story. After completing a Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of Adelaide, Alison worked as a Research Assistant … at this stage, Alison said she could not have imagined doing a PhD. Alison went to the UK and Europe as part of a fact-finding mission and only decided to undertake a PhD when she received encouragement from several people. Alison competed her PhD in Biological Sciences in French and English at the University of Bordeaux II in France. When Alison returned to Australia her career led her into roles working as a Senior Research Scientist leading research groups. Alison’s work focused on new therapeutic options for the complications of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Medical Research Institutes in Sydney and Brisbane respectively. In 2012, Alison made the successful transition to a career in Research Development, incorporating research policy, research management and business development at Griffith University. In 2018, Alison took up a role as a Principal Policy Officer in Queensland Health focusing on bringing content specific knowledge about research to Government to enhance import and export opportunities for Queensland’s health and medical research sector. In 2019, Alison was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform at CSIRO. This strategic position aims to help build a vibrant synthetic biology research and development community to drive the bio-based industries of the future. The story of how Alison ended up in her current role illustrates the value of networks and that, through good relationships, unexpected opportunities can arise.
Alison shares her grief story when she lost both of her parents within a short period of one another. Her dad had always been sick and so when his passing came, Alison was prepared for it. She had her mom to help her through that grief. However, when her mom had passed away from cancer, even though she knew it was a ‘5 year diagnosis’, it still came to her as a shock. She was 21 when she found out both her parents had cancer and by the time she was 25, she had lost both of them. She shares her story. Key Takeaways: Alison lost both of her parents within a two year span of one another. As Alison’s dad was dying, she got engaged and wanted to have her dad see her get married. When Alison’s mom passed away, she had to move out of their home while she was trying to graduate. It was tough, Alison is a speech pathologist and ended up having to be in the same room her mother died in two weeks later to help a patient. Looking back, Alison doesn’t know how she did it. People would tell Alison, ‘you’re so strong’, well, yeah, what else is she supposed to do? You’re a crazy person in your early 20s normally! And then your life gets turned upside down. Alison experienced envy when her friends had parents who could pay for them to go to college or had family that supported them. Alison felt so alone in her grief. No one knew what she was feeling or going through. Alison kept asking, ‘why?’. This shouldn’t have happened. Alison was so angry and saw a therapist...who ended up making her feel angrier. Even though Alison lost both parents, 8 years later she is still grieving her mom’s passing. People reacted poorly to Alison’s morbid sense of humor, but that was how she was able to handle the passing of her father. Everyday, Alison thinks about them and wonders what they’d think/feel about the situation she’s in. Alison tries to do little things to keep her parent’s memory living on. What are Alison’s coping mechanisms? Writing has been a huge healer. What advice does Alison have for others who have lost their parents? Any feelings you had during that moment are completely okay.
Fighting injustice is in Alison Johns’ DNA. As a child, Alison’s mother instilled the values of fairness and equity. When Alison came across injustice in the workplace as an adult, she found her calling. Alison is now Chief Executive of Advance HE. Their Athena Swan charter is being used across the globe, including in Australia. The charter is being used to support and transform gender equality, within higher education and research. In this episode of the SAGE Think Difference podcast, you’ll hear Alison reflect on her 20-year journey as a gender equity and diversity champion. This interview with Paul Richards was recorder earlier this year, just after eleven Australian institutions were awarded an Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award. Interviews: Alison Johns, Chief Executive of Advance HE. The Think Difference podcast is produced by Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE).
We’re kicking off March, Women’s History Month, with two amazing women. They followed their passion and created an innovative podcast around the question, “What would you do right now if you had $10,000?” Alison Burns and Lulu Picart host the comedy podcast, 10K Dollar Day, which can be described as imaginary luxury travel comedy. They also coach students of all ages at Find Your Light Coaching. Lulu is an actor, director, writer, singer, and doggy mom. Alison is a comedian, actress, singer, lyricist, choreographer, wife, and mom. She’s an award-winning musical theatre performer and a huge Gordon Ramsey fan. Not the same old podcast If you started a podcast, what would it be? When Alison and Lulu lived together outside NYC and worked in the theatre industry, they occupied themselves on the long commute by fantasizing about living in the lap of luxury. This pastime became the basis for their podcast that’s crammed full of comedy and improvisation. They research each place they “visit,” picking them independently, never knowing where the other person is “going.” Then they spend the podcast revealing the ways they would spend $10K in one day of imaginary luxury travel. They love finding odd places and dreaming of crazy luxury items that most people could never afford. The podcast also includes discussions of their latest obsessions, along with their giveaway to highlight specific charities. The podcast is creative, positive, imaginative, and is full of fun, laughter, and friendship. Give it a try! These two girls are careful not to put limits on their dreams, even though they are polar opposites when it comes to manifesting their dreams and visions in putting them “out there.” Most women are afraid that they will be called selfish if they do what makes them happy. Alison and Lulu are both passionate about making sure the opportunities they pursue are things that sustain them. Some of their young students are trying new things as they try to find their passion in life. Since Billy and Amanda are refusing to ignore their own happiness and quit dating so that Alison won't be uncomfortable around them, Alison is challenged to search her feelings about the matter and determine the real reason it bugs her so much that Billy is seeing Amanda. When Alison requests a formal meeting to discuss their relationship and then gets a dozen red roses at work with an unsigned card from an admirer who wants to meet her at Shooters, of course she assumes that it's Billy, finally ready to make a big declaration. But no! It's Keith. Now that he's fully divorced (or...so he says) (again), he's ready to pick back up where he and Alison left off, but is also content to start at the beginning again to rebuild trust. At least he's not going to have to do much double dating with Billy and Amanda, since they bothcan't stand him, and would rather spend time alone at Amanda's bachelorette pad anyway. Jake is so happy with the current state of his life that he forgets he's a character on a TV show and says so out loud, triggering his boss to lay him off ahead of a bank foreclosure of the whole shop. But there may be a way out: a five-figure divorce settlement Jo wants to invest in Jake starting the shop up again under his own management. Will Jake be able to quit pouting about being a "charity case" long enough to let Jo help him make his dream come true? We discuss it all in our podcast on "My New Partner"! When Alison called a Lyft after a night out with friends, she was looking for a quick ride home. Instead, she was driven across state lines, to a park — and the next morning, she woke up with no memory of what had happened there. Two years later, she's still looking for the truth about that night. On this week's show, Alison tells her story. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
When Alison literally ends a poker party by boring everyone with tales of her college cramming techniques, Jake is the only one intrigued...because it turns out he's about to take the GED exam and would like her help studying; he'd also like her to keep this whole project a secret from the rest of the nitwits in the complex, which of course means that when a bunch of them catch Alison coming out of Jake's apartment at 7 AM on a Saturday having fallen asleep amongst the books, they all jump to the wrong conclusion and Alison is too scrupulous to correct them. Billy and Sandy are united in not even caring if Jake and Alison are hooking up! They don't care at all!!! Rhonda is strangely ambivalent about attending a performance by a dance company featuring her old friend, Theresa. Matt gets the whole story over dinner with both of them: Rhonda and Theresa were both up for a spot in the company, but Rhonda broke her foot and missed the audition, and now she teaches Cardio Funk while Theresa enthralls audiences as a modern dancer. Theresa and Matt both urge Rhonda to try out for a slot the company has open now, but the more time Rhonda and Theresa spend together, the more obvious it is that there is still a lot of mutual resentment between them. We hope you won't resent our coverage of "Second Chances"!VISUAL AIDSVisual Aids S01.E06DISCUSSION & SHOW NOTESDiscussion and show notes for this episode can be viewed on this episode's page on AgainWithThisPodcast.com.SUPPORT AWT ON PATREONThank you to all our supporters! Alison is getting into a flirtation with Rick (Gremlins's Zach Galligan!), the kid from the mailroom with the excellent taste in breakfast carbs. Except, he's not just the kid from the mailroom; he's also the son of a big D&D sunscreen client. When Alison shares one of her campaign concepts over dinner, he can't resist passing it off as his own and defensively claiming to have had it before she mentioned it to him. Alison complains to a higher-up, who gives Alison a chance to present ideas with Rick -- and since Rick apparently doesn't have any ideas of his own, it's a perfect opportunity for her to shiv him. But will she? Jake, still (always) hard up for money, drops in on a fancy Italian café; while failing to learn how to use the espresso machine, he's accosted by Perry, a flame from his past. The two of them used to run short cons together, and it turns out she still is: she's passing herself off as an art dealer, and could use Jake as the face of her newest discovery when she tries to sell "his" work (actually just a bunch of splatters and butt prints). Jake's integrity finds itself at war with his limited financial prospects, again. Gay Matt finds the halfway house budget slashed again, and needs volunteers to help him prepare meals for residents. Rhonda enthusiastically signs herself up for a shift, only to have to take it back just a couple of hours before she's supposed to start. Will Rhonda and Gay Matt's friendship survive her flaking? I first learned this concept of opportunity cost in a personal finance class in college. I have learned this lesson the hard way many times. I recently taught my daughter this concept when she was so excited to get two dollars for her birthday, and was anxious to spend it. So, when she heard the ice cream truck coming, she bolting without a second thought and came back with two popsicles to share with her siblings. I was proud of her for thinking of everyone else and that she wanted them to share in her abundance. But then I told her that we probably could have gotten a box of popsicles with her money, and asked if that was the best way to spend her cash. I felt terrible after that because she was really upset that she had acted so hastily without thinking. I think she has learned since then that money (especially so little) comes and goes. But the lesson still holds, there is an opportunity cost associated with how we spend our time and money. I hope my daughter learns that lesson well. I hope she will always weigh out the outcome of all of her expenditures. The thing is, which is more precious? Time, or money? Money can be recouped even if it is difficult. But time is something that we will never get back. Once you have found an effective way to make money, I think it is valid to spend your time wisely, and decide whether the expense is worth the cost. Yet, we value our time so cheaply. I once passed up the chance to stand in line for a free sandwich from a great restaurant because the line wrapped around the building. I would have taken more than an hour to get through the line. Isn't my time worth more than $5 an hour or less? But, if someone came up to me and told me they had a job for me that paid $5 an hour, I would turn them down flat! What a joke! My time is worth more than that! That is the opportunity cost associated with how we value our time. Don't waste your time for things that have no worth. Alison told me about how her lifestyle has changed over the years since she discover eCommerce. When she and her husband were first married, they qualified for food stamps! Alison learned the value of innovation and figuring out what she could do to support her family on her terms. The reality is that we are all taught to value our time based on what we can get paid. When Alison learned that her employment wouldn't pay her enough to feed her family, she knew she could not be limited by the constructs of time = money! She found a way to leverage her time to expedite her value in a way we don't learn when we are told in a conventional economy. Entrepreneurship is a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs. It is risky. But, there is an opportunity cost to finding success. You can continue to trade your time for money, and be valued by how much you can make an hour. Or, you can push through the risk of finding a new path and tackle the opportunity cost of learning to grow your potential exponentially. Since starting her million-dollar businesses, and teaching her children how to do eCommerce, they have a new perspective on the time-value of money. They appreciate the trade-off of doing something they love to do and use the resources they have available to get everything done that needs to get done. They have been learning that you don't have to devote all your energy to accomplishing tasks you can delegate to others. More than the opportunity cost this provides, it has allowed Alison and her kids to learn that they have choice. They have learned that they have options available to them that you don't consider when you don't have the ability to delegate. This is a subtle mindset shift, but it is one that supports innovation, and creativity. Alison has taught her daughters how to run a business, and with that, they have learned the time-value of money -- something they don't teach you in school. Since they make their own income, her daughters are expected to buy their own things. Join the Family Success Toolkit Free...

You never knew that you could sell real estate anywhere, did you? I didn’t. Locally grown and globally known real estate agent Alison Clay Duboff sat with me recently on the Sell ANYWHERE podcast, to share how she has done it-aways were significant. Her story has more adventure in it than an Indiana Jones movie. The underpinning quality of her journey has been grit, gratefulness, humor, determination, and vision. When you truly want something, YOU FIND A WAY. We know this to be true, and to here Alison share drives it home! Once, her travels took her into Saudi Arabia for an extended time and she found herself facing limitations as a foreign woman from the culture she was inside of. These limitations included, what one can drink, and what one can wear. It also includes not being alone with a nonrelated male. In this scenario, Alison opened up not one, but three, businesses while in Saudi Arabia. This story took a difficult turn when her husband died before her very eyes. She had to get herself and her daughter from a foreign country back to California, where she would still be penniless (her husband had no life insurance). Listening to how she dug in at that point is inspiring. Another key take away from time with Alison is the practice of branding. One thing that a top performing realtor knows how to do better than anyone is to “self-brand”. Here are some tips from Alison: Think about who it is you are selling to, and what you are selling. 2. Look at what everyone else is doing, and… Be different, new, and fresh. For Alison, she is selling the beach, so instead of the typical headshot, she went with images of her on the beach. Use humor. Where most maintain the stuffy air of temporary confidence, Alison embraced the image of fun and not taking herself too seriously. Of course, as someone who can always be on, the temptation is to always be on. We intuitively know that this is bad for us, but how do we set those boundaries and get the proper recharge that we need? Alison's strategy is to find moments. Rather than taking time off, Alison takes times off. Times throughout the day. Times in between scheduled events. Having pockets of time off, rather than days of it. Here are a few key moments in the interview: 10:00 how to be an international realtor 11:25 When traveling, reach out to the places you are going to see if they would be willing to work with you. 24:30 When Alison’s husband died from a heart attack right in front of her, how did gratefulness and generosity help her forge ahead? 31:00 How do you resist staying on and burning out? “I take moments” I have set markers, but keep the inbetween open. 34:00 how to recharge-read, cook, entertain guests, taking a walk, be in nature (the beach of course), and being grateful 35:00 Challenging moments & how to handle conflict, remembering “this too shall pass” 43:00 How to get to where you want https://www.alisonisrealestate.com/ Text 310-200-3037 Facebook https://www.facebook.com/alison.clayduboff Instagram https://www.instagram.com/alisonisrealestate/ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/alison-clay-duboff-9ba5b96/

The Cool People feature of the week is a woman who is truly running for change: Alison Desir. A native of Englewood, New Jersey, she is leading the pack one step at a time. Named by Women's Running as one of twenty women who are changing the sport of running and the world, Alison is the founder of Harlem Run (an NYC-based running movement) and Run 4 All Women (an initiative that has raised over $150,000 for Planned Parenthood), and just launched the podcast Finding Meaning (on the RUN), available on iTunes, Google Music, SoundCloud and Stitcher. Alison is currently featured alongside American Ballet Theatre® principal ballerina Misty Copeland, world champion sprinter Natasha Hastings, professional stuntwoman Jessie Graff, and Chinese taekwondo champion and actress Zoe Zhang (Lanxin Zhang) in Under Armor’s latest global campaign, Unlike Any, which celebrates and honors the unprecedented achievements of female athletes that rise above gender comparisons and stand on their own as marvels of athletic prowess. Passionate about community, mental health and fitness, Alison's nickname, “powdered feet,” comes from the Haitian Kreyol saying, which describes a person so active that you never see them, just the footprints of where they’ve been in powder. Alison started running distance after a period of depression, and, over the past 4 years, has been able to Find Meaning on the Run. When Alison is not running, she is working to resolve and speaking passionately about issues related to women and girls. Turn your passion into your career! Join wellness-preneurs Eco-Vegan Gal, Whitney Lauritsen, My Healthy Hustle's Jason Wrobel, and I Vegan You's Nicole Derseweh as they drop knowledge bombs and their secrets on how to do what you love every day. Being a successful entrepreneur comes down to 7 key areas: Your Special Sauce There has never been and will never be another you. You need to double down on your special sauce—own whatever makes you unique. Don’t hide your quirks. They are what make you relatable, and what make other people want to do business with you. No one is perfect! And when you are yourself, when you show up as you are, flaws and all, you empower others to do the same. When Alison started her wellness blog she thought she had to be the perfect picture of health and happiness 24/7. This meant her posts weren’t authentic and the blog didn’t get much of a following. It wasn’t until she found her true voice and began to share her story on the podcast that Food Heals really took off. Your Story Our stories heal. When we share our stories, whatever our struggles or failures, someone listening will resonate with them. The more honest we are, the more our story can heal others and us. That’s how we can be spiritual activists and help the world. Multiple Streams of Income If you just focus on one channel, you might be successful but only until the trend lasts, or the algorithm changes. Having more than one income stream means that you create a sustainable and stable revenue. Say you want to get into content creation. Did you know that there are over 30 ways to make money as a content creator? That’s one of Whitney’s courses. Her income streams come from coaching, consulting, courses, Eco Vegan Gal, and more. A Little Faith Today, Jason is a vegan chef, lifestyle coach and nutrition edu-tainer on a mission to reduce suffering and increase joy on this planet. But before this, he worked in advertising. The process of letting go of the old life wasn’t easy. But there comes a point in our lives when we have to accept the gap between where we are and where we want to be, and take that leap of faith. Patience Accept that it won’t be an overnight transformation. To start making a difference in people’s lives and make an income, you need to build trust and that takes time. You need to be patient and committed to developing your brand a little each day and be ready for the long haul. Trust in the Universe We need to free ourselves from the constraints placed by our own minds, other people and society in order to be successful. It’s about attitude. How much do you believe in yourself and your mission? And how much do you trust that the Universe has your back? No matter what level we’re at, we don’t know if the course will be successful, if the post will be shared, if that client will call back or if the video will go viral. We have to go beyond knowing into trusting in the Universe, intuition, and life. Abundance Mindset Do you have an abundance mindset? Abundance is consciously receiving that which has already being given to you—being grateful. When we are in that high, vibrational energy of gratitude, we attract the right people and opportunities into our lives. Nicole didn’t even think she could make money from her passion, but it gave her so much joy that it transformed her energy and ended up sparking her acting career. Her genuine inner fulfilment meant that she attracted more of it into her life. Top tips to up-level your business Allison: Don’t be too proud to work for free—it can massively pay off. Sometimes you have to put in the effort to get your foot in the door. It might take doing a few free speaking gigs to reach your tribe and grow your audience. Insta tip: Use your Instagram feed for your best posts, like a portfolio, and stories like an interview to share who you authentically are. Jason: Look at your business as you would an investment. The more sources of income you have, the more sustainable you become. Have as many consistent income streams as possible. Secret sauce: carve out your uniqueness and trust that the more you reveal of yourself the more people will embrace you. Nicole: Treat every role as if it is the award-winning one. It doesn’t matter how many people show up for your course or your webinar, always give your best. Even if it’s the smallest project, treat every opportunity like it is huge. Whitney: Figure out money issues which could get in the way of trying to generate income doing what you love. Check out “Money: A Love Story” by Kate Northrup, or Jen Sincero’s “You’re a Bad Ass at Making Money”—great books to help you figure out the emotional and energetic blocks to your financial abundance.
Thought Strategist ... what an ideal way to describe Alison Donaghey who also serves as a speaker, successful business owner, consultant and author of Think Opposite: Using the Domino Effect to Change Your Business, Change the World. Alison specializes in challenging people to suspend their belief and explore the opposite of what they believe. Then they proceed with clarity because they either remain firm in their original belief or they shift to a point of view that they are more aligned with. She can share countless examples of how encouraging others to question their status quo often leads to improvements not only in their world but the world. This way of thinking became an instrumental way for Alison to grow her painting business. When she began her business as a single mom on welfare she had many contrary thoughts to mainstream thinking. If she had followed popular culture she would never have started the business or work to see it grow to a six-figure income within five years. Thinking Opposite is clearly powerful … look at what it did for Alison. This Think Opposite Woman is an adventure-seeker and loves life out on the edge. It makes sense that the topics of her Think Opposite Radio Show are edgy and controversial. She likes to lead people to question why they believe what they believe so they do not become part of the huge problem of echo chambers in our world. Alison speaks from the heart and is led by a desire to improve conditions whether that is in someone's business or their life. We all benefit when we strive to make things better and question the status quo. When Alison addresses her global audiences she captures their attention and leads them to deeper clarity and creative thinking and problem solving. Connect With Alison: Understand Men on FacebookUnderstandMen.com The Mission Log: [02:10] - What is the most astonishing discovery that Alison has made about men and women, and they way they connect? [05:02] - Alison has said that we see men as “hairy, misbehaving women.” She talks more about the way the genders interact. [08:20] - Orion points out that men don’t like to report as much as women do; Alison takes it a step further, emphasizing how deeply ingrained it is in men not to expend energy on conversations like this. [10:10] - Alison discusses Orion’s use of the word “obey” in relation to men, and talks about the importance of appreciating people’s good choices. [12:13] - Alison talks about how to view the “part” in “partnership,” how important it is to show appreciation in the other person’s currency, and the “worth it calculation.” [18:43] - What are some ways to find and speak our partner’s love language? [20:02] - Alison offers an example to explain why love languages and appreciation currencies matter. She also talks about the teleclass called The Appreciation Equation on her site. [25:15] - At Alison’s house, she and her husband have something called a “credit tour,” where they point out the things they need to be appreciated for. [25:40] - What makes a woman attractive to a man? Alison’s somewhat surprising answer is that instead of worrying about being attractive, you should show that you’re attracted to him. [30:00] - Orion talks about her Awaken Your Inner Goddess Challenge. She then asks Alison’s advice for what women should do to heal themselves. In her answer, Alison emphasizes the importance of forgiving oneself. [37:09] - When Alison talks about “owning,” is that public or private? And how do we get to a place of owning ourselves and our actions? [40:12] - Alison talks about Valentine’s Day, starting with her aversion to its disempowering history and false beginning. [44:44] - Money is like a man, Allison says, and explains the connection. Again, she emphasizes the need to be impressed and appreciative. [46:42] - Alison offers her advice on healing from betrayal, trusting again, and rediscovering faith in love. Much of this revolves around unspoken expectations on both parts. {53:02] - What are Alison’s three tips for living a stellar life? 1. Figure out what your shortlist (of things you truly need) is. 2. Make clear to everyone who you care about what your needs are, and ask if they’ll provide it to you. 3. Assess whether the shortlist of what people are able to provide to you matches the shortlist of what you need. Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Try to avoid asking a man a relationship question unless you want a literal answer. He’s more likely to try to genuinely answer it than to take any hint you intended with the question. Don’t take it personally if your guy answers your questions about his day with “good” or “fine.” It’s his hunter instinct to conserve energy showing itself. Be direct about what you want or need from your partner. You need to provide clarity if you want your partner to provide what you’re asking for. In this episode, Curt and Kevin put aside their capes and cowls to discuss a different kind of comic book story: Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. In sketching a portrait of her life growing up in a small Pennsylvania town, Bechdel examines her complicated relationship with her father, Bruce, a funeral home director and high school teacher whose passion for restoring the family's Victorian-era home underscores his emotional distance from his wife and children. When Alison comes out to her parents as a lesbian, she soon comes to learn of her father's own homosexuality, which lands him in legal trouble and perhaps even contributes to his sudden death at the age of 44, which Bechdel considers to be a suicide. Can Alison come to terms with her father's death, his past, and his detached relationship with her? And can her award-winning memoir make its own way in the world, to that obsessively decorated “fun home” known as … The Comics Canon? WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS RADIO WITH HOST TONY GAMBONE AND GUEST ALISON KERO & JUDY MACNAMEE: Alison Kero grew up with 2 different organizational styles being modeled to her. One parent was precision neat while the other was a pack rat. Through her teenage and college years Alison lived more like her pack rat parent but when she became an adult and started living on her own, she searched for ways to easily get and stay organized. When Alison became an organizer in 2004, she constantly searched for ways to make her clients lives and her own, easier through organization. However, minor amounts of clutter always tended to creep up in Alison's life, which she found frustrating and kind of exhausting. Finally Alison had a major "ah-ha Oprah moment" after reading a book about tidying up. She realized that using self love as her decision making tool she could create her best possible living space filled only with what she liked, used and needed.
