Background: Alicia Long is resilient. In her 20s, she was a door-to-door salesperson who learned how to overcome "doors slammed in your face" rejection. She always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur but was as lost as to how to get started. One day, after being disgusted by the ingredients in her nut milk, she had an idea. Why not make a nut milk machine? Inspired by her mother and the Keurig coffee maker, she and her husband set out to make the first nut-milking machine. During this fun and inspiring episode, Alicia shared how she overcame rejection after rejection while looking for funding by calling up the reliance she learned in door-to-door sales to keep going. Guest: Brandon Webb is a combat–decorated Navy SEAL sniper turned entrepreneur who has built two brands into an eight-figure business. As a US Navy Chief, he was head instructor at the Navy SEAL sniper school, which produced some of America's most legendary snipers. As an entrepreneur, Brandon crashed and burned his first start-up in 2009 and lost everything. After this experience, he created SOFREP Media, which he continues to run as CEO. He is also an author of several books, including his latest thriller, Steel Fear, and several nonfiction books such as "Total Focus: Make Better Decisions Under Pressure" and "Masting Fear: A Navy SEAL's Guide." Over his navy career, he completed four deployments to the Middle East and one to Afghanistan. He redeployed to Iraq in 2006 as a contractor in support of the US intelligence community. An accomplished and proven leader, Brandon was meritoriously promoted to First Class Petty Officer, ranked #1 in the Command, while an instructor at sniper cell. He has received numerous distinguished service awards, including Top Frog at Team 3 (best combat diver), the Presidential Unit Citation (awarded by President George W. Bush), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with "V" device for valor in combat. Brandon ended his Navy career early to spend more time with his children and focus on entrepreneurship. Episode in a Tweet: Don't fight fear or try to beat it back; instead, embrace and harness it so you can triumph in even the most adverse situations. Quick Background: I reached out to Brandon after reading "Mastering Fear: A Nacy SEAL's Guide." While reading this fantastic book, I learned that Brandon was a fellow YPOer and knew he had to come on the show. I appreciated Brandon's views on mastering fear. My favorite line from the book is, "Fear can be a set of manacles, holding you prisoner, or it can be a slingshot, catapulting you on to greatness." While I haven't had people shooting at me as Brandon has, I could relate to his stories and appreciated how he overcame loss and tragedy to create a better life for himself. In this episode, Brandon shares his story of leaving home at 16, becoming a Navy SEAL, and losing his first business and marriage at the same time. He has overcome controversy, rebuilt his relationship with his father, and has followed his passion - writing. His media company, SOFREP, is a military-themed digital media company. SOFREP aims to be the "MARVEL" of military content and has already produced several hit online shows, books, and podcasts. It's a blend of video, digital print, podcast, and indie book publisher.
To kick off Black History Month, we are visiting with a New York Times bestselling author. You may remember her from Episode 58, way back in 2016. She was here to promote her first book, and today, she’s telling us about her second book. The book is available for preorder, and it’s required reading for any dream chaser. Join us! Luvvie Ajayi Jones is a New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and podcast host who thrives at the intersection of comedy, media, and justice. Her debut book, https://amzn.to/2L4nPIG (I’M JUDGING YOU: The Do-Better Manual), was released to critical acclaim, hitting the New York Times bestselling list at #5. She’s an internationally recognized speaker who takes on dozens of stages every year around the globe, and she has spoken at some of the world's most innovative companies and conferences, including Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter. Her new book, Professional Troublemaker: The Fear-Fighter Manual, drops March 2, 2021, and is available for preorder at http://www.professionaltroublemakerbook.com (www.professionaltroublemakerbook.com). Ordinary people, extraordinary things Who is a hero that you’re tempted to put up on a pedestal? Luvvie doesn’t want to be put on a pedestal. Even though we tend to view people with platforms as heroes, we have to realize that they went through the grind and the struggles to take their journey. People on pedestals are set up for failure because they WILL get tired and fall. Even our heroes are flawed individuals who are learning and growing along the way. Luvvie wants everyone to know that she’s a regular person, just like everyone else. It takes constant work to maintain a platform of influence and be an ordinary person doing extraordinary things. TWEET: Even our heroes are flawed individuals who are learning and growing along the way. @luvvie #chasingdreams Going solo Would you ever vacation alone? You’ll probably say NO, but Luvvie urges you to reconsider that viewpoint. As her 30th birthday approached, she wanted to go on vacation but realized it was too late for any of her friends to schedule a trip. She went alone to the Dominican Republic and had the time of her life. That same year, she visited several other countries all over the world--all by herself. She fully thrived in the freedom to make her own plans and choices each day without consulting anyone else. There are so few opportunities in life to do exactly what we want without having to consider and accommodate the wants and needs of other people. She says these solo vacations are a true gift she gave to herself that have changed her life. She’s learned that she doesn’t need the counsel and approval of other people to do what we need to in life. Why do we live our lives based on the opinions of others? Try a solo vacation if you need a new perspective on life! TWEET: Don’t live your life based on the opinions of others. @luvvie #chasingdreams “Too much, too loud, and too troublesome” Are you a fear fighter? Luvvie wrote her second book to help those who need to know how to fight fear in their lives, which is an especially relevant topic for women. With blogging, writing, podcasting, and creating communities, Luvvie tries to establish what she needs because that means that others will find value there also. The concept of fear-fighting means we have to do scary things sometimes. Fear is a universal emotion, but we each feel like we are alone in our uncertainty, doubt, and anxiety. We need community to know that we are not alone. We need others to be “too much, too loud, and too troublesome” with us. Remember that it’s OK to stay scared and move forward with courage. Today, my guest shares her inspiring story about what helped her turn things around in life to manifest her dreams. She shares nuggets of wisdom and practical techniques that can help you move forward in your dream chase. Join us! Heather Hakes is a mindset coach, speaker, and author of https://amzn.to/3pHkMWa (Take the Leap). She has been featured on numerous podcasts and published in Voyage Denver and Women Who Empower and Inspire. Heather has reached tens of thousands through her international podcast, Mind Over Matter. Heather specializes in helping others get out of their own way by awakening their infinite potential to create their ideal life. Heather is a graduate of Tony Robbins’ Mastery University and Gabby Bernstein’s Spirit Junkie Masterclass. She also studies Eckhart Tolle, Bob Proctor, and Robin Sharma’s principles of presence, shifting paradigms, and personal mastery. Heather manifested six-figures after taking the leap to quit the corporate world by aligning with her true passion and purpose and is now on a mission to help others overcome self-doubt through her transformative coaching programs, retreats, and courses. Following society’s rules How likely are you to follow the “rules” that society sets for you? Heather admits that she was caught in this trap for a long time. She followed society’s rules in getting her degree and moving into the corporate world. For over a decade, Heather felt out of place, like she was chasing someone else’s dream. She remembers complaining to her parents about what she was doing while dreading every single Monday and cheering every single Friday for week after week. Climbing the corporate ladder left her feeling miserable about her job and her life. She finally clarified what she really wanted in life with the help of a coach. TWEET: Stop chasing someone else’s dream. @heather.hakes #chasingdreams A moment of pivot What is it that you need to pivot from right now? Pivoting away from what you’ve known is not an easy thing to do. For Heather, it meant leaving the safety and security of a corporate job with a steady and sufficient paycheck. She had felt the gnawing inside of her for a long time as it told her to make a change. Her message to others is not to wait until you’re “ready” and everything is aligned because those moments may never come. You just have to jump first and let the net appear. Heather made the leap, even though it meant facing the worst-case scenario with fear and hesitation. We all need to realize that our story is a journey and a process---and not a destination. TWEET: Don’t wait until you’re “ready” and everything is aligned to make a change because those moments may never come. @heather.hakes #chasingdreams Creating a path What do you do when the traditional path isn’t available or clear? Heather says to find a mentor when your circumstances change and you can’t see clearly the path ahead. Look for someone who is where you want to be or a few steps ahead of you. They can help you create clarity and formulate a roadmap forward. Be resourceful and find an “accountabili-buddy.” There are coaches, mentors, and peers who will help you if you just ask; they can be great resources to help you move forward with an attitude of gratitude for your journey and what you learn along the way. TWEET: Look for a mentor who is where you want to be or is a few steps ahead of you. @heather.hakes #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream-chaser to take--”Take one step in front of the other. Most people long for love. Some are successful in the search, and others feel that true love is just not in the cards for them. The truth is that you have to love yourself before you can love someone else and be loved in a fulfilling way. If that sounds too abstract to comprehend, then join us for today’s show--and learn what you can do to bring more love into your life. Veronica Grant is a love coach for successful women who feel like they have it all except love, and she helps them find it. Through her binge-worthy podcast, free workshops, and coaching, Veronica is committed to shaking up how you find love, even in our “swipe right, swipe left” world. Some of her guilty pleasures (a must-have for recovering perfectionists!) include binge-watching HGTV, hiking with her husband and pup, and sushi everything. Join us to meet Veronica and clear what's blocking you in love! Making a pivot Have you felt the nudge to make a big change in your life? Veronica looks back to her time as a paid staffer on the Obama campaign in 2012. Her work consumed every moment of her life and turned her into a monster. She realized later, as she worked herself to misery in a job in DC, that she could not allow herself to stay in that world any longer. Looking back, she sees that these experiences led to the turning point that spurred her to other things, like starting her own business. Too many people let guilt convince them to stay in a miserable situation much longer than they should, and they use every excuse to justify their misery. Veronica realizes the big pivot she made was necessary to regain her sanity and wellbeing. TWEET: Don’t let guilt convince you to stay in a miserable situation longer than you should. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Why a Love Coach? Does someone really need a love coach? While Veronica’s work IS about dating and finding that special someone, it really isn’t. Her work is all about the personal development and self-love of her client. She is more concerned about how someone treats themselves when they are frustrated, rejected, sad, and lonely. Those feelings are part of life’s path, but they shouldn’t factor into how you perceive your lovability and what you deserve in life. While she can’t prevent the inevitable heartbreaks for her clients, she doesn’t want that experience to change the story they tell themselves about their self-worth. TWEET: Heartbreak doesn’t have to change the story you tell yourself about your self-worth. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Your inner child and your self-worth What was your inner child taught about love? Self-worth is tied to what we have been conditioned to believe about how and why we are loved. Most girls are conditioned with clear messaging that they will be more successful in love if they are skinny and attractive. We all want love, safety, and belonging, so we listen to the messages from the adults in our lives, especially those that tie body image to love and happiness. The little girl in you has to be reparented in the subconscious to heal that wound. Old beliefs have to be reprogrammed, and we have to be gentle around our thoughts to create a more positive headspace. Practice will create habit change. TWEET: We have to be gentle around our thoughts to create a more positive headspace. @veronicaegrant #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”No technique or tool will help you see change if you still beat yourself up. If you’re stuck in a place without passion and purpose in life, then today’s show is for you. You might not think that someone can pivot from being an actress to a lawyer to the sweet world of baked goods, but today’s guest proves that it is possible! It’s never too late to chase your dreams and create the happiness you deserve! Jessie Sheehan is a cookbook author, food writer, recipe developer, and baker. She is the author of The Vintage Baker, (2018, Chronicle Books), which was named one of the Washington Post’s best cookbooks of 2018 and is beloved by Oprah, Nigella Lawson, Gail Simmons, and more. Jessie is also the co-author of Icebox Cakes (2015, Chronicle Books). The thing that drew Jessie in How many people start out in one profession before finding their niche in something completely different? It happens more often than you might think. Baking was the thing that drew Jessie in after she explored other unrelated professions. She grew up in a “foodie” family that loved experimenting with delicious foods, and there was a great reverence for sweets. As a new mom baking at home, she found that it was something she loved, even though she had no formal training. Getting a job at a bakery put Jessie doing menial tasks like bagging granola, and then her superiors saw that she was in it for the long haul. A journey of learning from others and growing her knowledge and skillset gave her the opportunity to progress to other duties, and she proved herself by being a hard worker and a fast learner. TWEET: Learning from others and growing your skillset brings new opportunities. @jessiesheehanbakes #chasingdreams Finding what she was supposed to do Do you look back on your journey with regret? Jessie looks back and sometimes wishes that she had just started out by going to pastry school instead of pursuing other passions like being an actress and a lawyer. Her training process happened on the job at the bakery, and she knows there are gaps in her knowledge that pastry school would have filled. She also realizes that if she hadn’t taken the long journey to discover her passion for baking, then she might not have the same appreciation for what she is accomplishing each day. TWEET: Don’t look back on your journey with regret. @jessiesheehanbakes #chasingdreams The balance between accomplishments and goals How do you find a balance between the accomplishments of the past and the goals of the future? As Jessie contemplates the trajectory of her career, she’s pleased and grateful for what she’s accomplished and the cookbooks she’s helped create, but she still wants to do more. In enjoying the moment and feeling pride in accomplishments, there is a balance with looking toward the future and wondering what wonderful things might be around the corner. Way back when, Jessie was a young mom looking for an interesting job to fill a few hours away from her home and her kids, so she began packing and sealing bags of granola at the bakery. Now she develops recipes, writes cookbooks, and makes national media appearances with her baking skills. We’re kicking off March, Women’s History Month, with two amazing women. They followed their passion and created an innovative podcast around the question, “What would you do right now if you had $10,000?” Alison Burns and Lulu Picart host the comedy podcast, 10K Dollar Day, which can be described as imaginary luxury travel comedy. They also coach students of all ages at Find Your Light Coaching. Lulu is an actor, director, writer, singer, and doggy mom. Alison is a comedian, actress, singer, lyricist, choreographer, wife, and mom. She’s an award-winning musical theatre performer and a huge Gordon Ramsey fan. Not the same old podcast If you started a podcast, what would it be? When Alison and Lulu lived together outside NYC and worked in the theatre industry, they occupied themselves on the long commute by fantasizing about living in the lap of luxury. This pastime became the basis for their podcast that’s crammed full of comedy and improvisation. They research each place they “visit,” picking them independently, never knowing where the other person is “going.” Then they spend the podcast revealing the ways they would spend $10K in one day of imaginary luxury travel. They love finding odd places and dreaming of crazy luxury items that most people could never afford. The podcast also includes discussions of their latest obsessions, along with their giveaway to highlight specific charities. The podcast is creative, positive, imaginative, and is full of fun, laughter, and friendship. Give it a try! These two girls are careful not to put limits on their dreams, even though they are polar opposites when it comes to manifesting their dreams and visions in putting them “out there.” Most women are afraid that they will be called selfish if they do what makes them happy. Alison and Lulu are both passionate about making sure the opportunities they pursue are things that sustain them. TWEET: Don’t put limits on your dreams! @LuLuPicart @_alisonburns #chasingdreams Passing it on Are you good at passing on your knowledge and expertise? Alison and Lulu love the coaching opportunities they have with students aged 6-60’s in several Broadway shows and tours. Although some of their students are professional actors pursuing their careers, they work with many young kids and not-so-young adults who are wanting to try new things and learn new skills. Some of their young students are trying new things as they try to find their passion in life. As we kick off Black History Month, I couldn’t find a better dream chaser with whom to start than today’s guest. Listen and be inspired by the story of her dream-chase to find passion, purpose, joy, and fulfillment in leaving corporate America behind and leaping into the entrepreneurial life. Teneshia Warner is the founder and CEO of Egami Group, one of the country’s most successful multicultural marketing and communication firms and creator of The Dream Project. Through The Dream Project, Teneshia has spoken to more than 150,000 dreamers across the nation and brought together nearly 200 leading business moguls and celebrities. Her book, The Big Stretch: 90 Days to Expand Your Dreams, Crush Your Goals, and Create Your Own Success (McGraw-Hill Education, November 22, 2019), is a soul-searching, life-transforming, twelve-week, boot camp that reveals how to get from where you are to where you dream of being---in life and business. Listening to the signals Do you get internal signals when it’s time to move on to something new? Do you pay attention to them? Teneshia was a computer science major in college, and then she went on to be a project manager at IBM. She was busy climbing the corporate ladder, and her life looked perfect from the outside, but she felt signals telling her that something wasn’t right. She ignored the signals but kept facing each workday with dread, especially every Monday. This went on for years and years until her parents challenged her to DO something about her situation besides complaining about it. At this point, Teneshia became open to other options. She went back to school to pursue her MBA. An assignment there to analyze life decisions turned out to be exactly what she needed to take the next steps and move forward with purpose and passion. TWEET: Don’t ignore the signals that tell you something isn’t right. @teneshiajwarner #chasingdreams From the inside out What brings you joy? This was the first question Teneshia needed to answer in her transition. Through simple self-awareness, she listed the things that interested her, the skills she possessed, and the things that brought her joy in life. Her list included creativity, entertainment, music, and fashion. Once she had the list, she began researching careers that were tied to her areas of interest. She wanted to transition into the music and entertainment industry, but she had no connection and no way to get her foot in the door. Teneshia decided that volunteering would be her way to learn. The end result of that endeavor is that she went from unpaid intern to general manager of the company in exactly one year. TWEET: Teneshia made a list of what brought her joy and researched careers tied to her interests. @teneshiajwarner #chasingdreams Making the leap How attached are you to your comfort zone? Teneshia knew she needed to leave the comfort of her home and family in Minnesota, so she moved to NYC without knowing anyone there. She downsized to a studio apartment so small that she “could open the front door from the shower.” She gave herself a timeline of one year to “make it,” which kicked her into a new level of urgency. Even though she wasn’t sure how things would happen, she had a plan laid out. Her success is an example of putting in the work. Now she has a new book and a new company to show for it. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I’m excited about 2020, and I have confidence and good feelings that it will be the Year of Awesome for me---and I hope for you, too! In today’s solo episode by me, I’m sharing Ten Lessons I’ve learned from my past. I hope you’ll listen and take action as we count them down from ten. 10. You can’t do it alone. You need a coach or mentor or someone to help you. I share personal experiences I’ve had with taking online courses, of which some are great, and some, not so much. The ones that include a coaching component are the most helpful. Find someone who will coach and guide you on your journey. TWEET: Find someone to guide you on your journey. #chasingdreams 9. It’s the journey, not the goal. Work toward your dreams, even if you don’t achieve them. The journey to the goal should be joyful and invigorating. Enjoy the journey with all the highs, the lows, and each experience of your adventure. TWEET: Enjoy the journey! #chasingdreams 8. Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes and keep moving. We are our worst critics and worst enemies. We hold ourselves back because we don’t allow our mistakes to happen, and we don’t offer ourselves forgiveness. We feel like we have to punish ourselves for our mistakes. Don’t let your mistake last longer than it needs to. TWEET: Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes. #chasingdreams 7. Find opportunities for yourself along the way. Humble yourself and find the power and value of volunteering or being an intern. Take a chance. You never know what will happen in your story. Don’t stay in the box. Get a shovel and make your own path. Listen to the inspiring story of my podcast producer, Ruth, in Kenya. TWEET: Be humble. #chasingdreams 6. Embrace your fears. This is my new motto for 2020. Fear is what holds most people back from chasing their dreams. What are you afraid of? Make a list. Do your research and figure out how to overcome those fears. If you don’t know how, please message me and let me help. TWEET: Embrace your fears and overcome them. #chasingdreams 5. Be happy. Life is too short for anything else! You can’t be happy 24/7, but there can be more ups than downs. Spend time with your loved ones. Go on adventures. Do what makes YOU happy, not what makes other people happy. TWEET: Do what makes YOU happy. #chasingdreams 4. What are you waiting for? Don’t follow society’s rules for what everyone else thinks you should do. Don’t let anyone tell you what the deadline is for marriage, having kids, a certain job, or a vacation. Don’t wait! You never know what life will throw at you. TWEET: Don’t wait. #chasingdreams 3. Take care of your mental health. I found myself anxious, stressed, and depressed after a car accident earlier this year. I saw a therapist who helped me talk through what I was feeling and why. It is vitally important to advocate for your mental health. TWEET: Be your own mental health advocate. #chasingdreams 2. Make your own choices. This has been a struggle for me, and it’s a lesson that took a while for me to learn. This is YOUR life, so don’t let other people pressure you to make certain choices. I was 28 years old when I made the first decision for myself about my education and my career. TWEET: This is YOUR life. #chasingdreams 1. Do random acts of kindness. Look for ways to do things that make other people happy without looking for recognition. There is great power in living this way. TWEET: Do random acts of kindness. #chasingdreams 0. My theme for 2020: I am enough. There are things I want to do to improve myself, but I am enough right now. Leadership--it holds such power. It can be used from one extreme to the other in lifting someone to the highest level or tearing them down to the lowest low. We hear a lot about leadership, but we don’t hear much about the role that emotions play in leadership. We are diving into this topic today with someone who has wisdom to share. Kingsley Grant is a national and international motivational speaker, leadership consultant, trainer, licensed psychotherapist, adjunct professor, podcaster, and published author. His newest book is The Emotelligent Leader: Succeed Where Others Failed. Kingsley’s focus is on helping business and team leaders create environments that motivate, engage, and inspire people to do great work at all levels, which ultimately affects the bottom line. Kingsley is a contributing writer for the Huffington Post, Addicted2Success, Thrive Global, and The Goodman Project. It’s never too late Is age holding you back from chasing a dream? Kingsley says it’s never too late in life to do what you want to do. He proved it by going to graduate school later in life, even though he was the oldest student in the classroom. Many successful people who have become household names accomplished their greatest feats in midlife years or later. It’s normal to have a fear of failure, but by the midlife years, people have more wisdom and knowledge about life. You can “get there” faster if you’re older. TWEET: Emotions drive everything we do. #chasingdreams Succeeding as a leader Who are you leading? Many people are tempted to think they aren’t leaders, but there is always someone looking up to you or watching your life. Kingsley explains that a thermostatic leader gauges the temperature of those they are leading and sets the temperature for everyone. It’s important that a leader shows empathy and builds relationships with the people they lead. The key is to be a vulnerable leader and act human. A leader can’t be resistant to vulnerability or see it as a weakness. TWEET: Don’t be afraid to launch into your dreams in midlife. You know better and can get there faster. #chasingdreams The next generation of leaders How do we change the perspective on leadership? Kingsley sees his book as the impetus to create a movement. He wants to get people to buy into the idea of being an emotelligent leader who will recognize, understand, and manage emotions in ways to become more skilled at relationships and making judgments. It takes education and training for those who are willing to take Kingsley’s message to heart, live it, and spread it far and wide. TWEET: ”Your dream won’t happen overnight. I get a lot of requests to appear on The Sales Evangelist, but Jason Bay set himself apart from the crowd by sending a video email and changing the email game. Jason started his sales career while he was in college, and he and his wife now run a company called Blissful Prospecting, where they remove the stress of prospecting by doing it for their clients. He quickly discovered that the smaller midsize business was overlooked in the existing offerings, and he wanted to provide a less robust service that still produced the same type of results. Mom and pop Jason discovered there weren't a whole lot of companies that were willing to work with smaller organizations. Those companies that don't really have any SDRs and maybe they don't even know the lingo. Jason wanted to help those business owners who are already multitasking with some of their business development. They don't have time to list build and personalize emails. We've discovered the same dynamic at The Sales Evangelist. Many of the companies that need help are smaller companies whose sales reps have no training and no real process. The company expects the rep to thrive but they have no basis for it. It becomes a vicious cycle of reps who wash out or leave to go to another company. The business hires another rep with no real training or process, and the cycle begins again. Video prospecting Jason's company prospects for itself, too, so the company does what it sells. Part of prospecting and selling is explaining to people what you do. People assume when he refers to video that it's YouTube and other content creation. Video prospecting is similar to writing an email. It's common knowledge now that your emails must be personalized beyond a first name. You must actually include something in the email that's personal to the reader. Many people take this approach: Hey Donald, I listened to one of your recent podcasts about this topic and I discovered... (fill in the blank.) While it's personalized, it's a little redundant. We have to work to empathize with the prospect, and they may prove to be a little more difficult for men. Video allows you to put a face to an email. It allows the recipient to see a human being instead of reading an email, so you're changing the email game. You can still send an email or a LinkedIn message. You can't fake video. Everything in prospecting demands that you do it the right way if you want to succeed. Think about the type and quality of clients you want to attract. Changing the email game If you're engaging in the "murder by numbers approach" of sending 1,000 emails in order to land 5 appointments, think about the quality of customer you're attracting. It won't be really good. If you want to work with a specific group of customers, you must show them that you're their peer. You aren't a guy sending tons of spam and praying that it succeeds. Video takes a little more work, but if it produces more responses, it's worth the investment of time. I'd rather my sales team spend a few minutes researching and sending out 10 to 15 videos if I'll get responses from eight of them. They'll be much richer opportunities. Your numbers may not be as high with video, but the return will be better. It's the account-based approach. Instead of getting a big list of people, do research to come up with a list of companies that will be a good fit. Think of it as going to the gym. If you go to the gym with a plan for the session, you'll be much more efficient than if you go in and just wing it. Without a plan, you'll take twice as long and be half as effective. Do all the prospecting preparation on the front end so that you aren't spending your time with prospects who aren't a good fit. Focus your prospecting attention on companies you can actually help and serve. Video tips Many people avoid video because they worry about how they'll appear. You must work around that fear because there isn't a single scenario where video isn't a good option. Make sure to look directly into the camera so the person on the other end feels as though he is actually talking to a person instead of a screen. Use quality equipment. Most laptops and phones now have quality cameras. Video where you have good light. Smile. Don't be so serious. Create the sense that working with you is enjoyable. If you're at a small company, you're likely the person that the prospect will be working with. You're a reflection of the business. Limit your video to 30 seconds or less. Prepare bullet points of what you'd like to say. Don't be too scripted but plan for what you'd like to say. Your pitch shouldn't be more than 1-2 sentences. Connecting with video Video is easier to consume and it stands out in a crowded email inbox. [Tweet "Don't prospect to make a sale. Prospect to start a conversation. #Prospecting"] You're not going to sell a prospect over the phone or through email or LinkedIn. Your job is to simply sell them on the appointment. Your call to action isn't, "We can help you." It's "We help businesses like yours and if you're having a specific challenge, we might be able to help you too." Don't pretend like you know more than you actually do. And don't leave your prospect feeling like he has been insulted. Video options So many platforms have launched their own video capabilities that it's difficult to choose one over another. Be conscious of a couple of things, though. Consider tools that flow with the tools you're already using. If you're using Hubspot for CRM and they launch a video capability, it makes sense to use that one because they are built to go together. Make sure you can record the screen through video as well as the video of yourself. Make sure you have the flexibility you need. Don't spend too much money on video capability. Jason likes Loom and Soapbox right now. Loom is a Google Chrome extension that's a little clunky but effective. Soapbox has a free version that is very capable and good quality, and its pro version has useful features as well. AB test everything. Test your specific situation. Before you invest time and energy into video, try sending videos. Measure to see what happens. Test different areas of the email sequence. Try it at the beginning of the message or maybe at the end to see what works best in terms of changing the email game. Prioritize your prospecting based on who is the most engaged with the actual outreach. Use the software that shows you who is actually opening your messages and invest your extra effort into those people. "Changing The Email Game" episode resources You can connect with Jason at blissfulprospecting.com/Donald where he has put together some basic tools to help you get started in video prospecting. You'll find a PDF, a script, and the flow for recording that will move you toward changing the email game. You'll find lots of good resources on the website as well. Check out Loom, Soapbox, BombBomb, or Hubspot for video capability that meshes with your existing workflow. If you haven't connected with me on LinkedIn already, do that at Donald C. Can a young person be the voice of motivation and empowerment in chasing dreams? Yes! Join me for an inspiring conversation with a dream chaser who is already making an impact and helping others find their purpose. Marcus Roberts-DeLoach is a 22-year-old young adult empowerment writer, speaker, business owner, and radio talk program host from Philadelphia, PA. He is a former full-time student-athlete at Ohio State University-Lima and will soon be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. Marcus is the author of Bigger Than You: What is Your Purpose? Through his work, he expresses how important it is to help others live a purposeful life. He is a firm believer that current situations don’t define final destinations. His advice to people is never to let people tell you what you can’t do or that your dreams are impossible to achieve. Marcus believes that putting in the work makes anything possible for anyone. His vision goes far behind himself, and he believes that empowering other people is the key to truly changing the world. Finding his gifts What are your gifts? Marcus always knew that his gifts were basketball, talking to people, and making them smile. He started out in athletic training, then moved to business, and later on to communications. Early on, Marcus developed the mindset that he wanted to own his own business, and he knew the sky would be the limit if he concentrated on growing a better version of himself. It didn’t take long for Marcus to turn into a personal development guru because he knew it would be the key to a better future. TWEET: Building your dream is hard, but being broke is also hard. @IamMarcusRD #chasingdreams Finding a balance Is everything more difficult when you’re young? Not really, but finding a balance in life and finding yourself can be more challenging when you’re young. Marcus admits that his concentration is not as good because he feels “all over the place.” He realized that he had to commit to his dream with consistency and learn to say NO to some people. The average 22-year-old isn’t doing the things that Marcus is. He looks forward to what his decisions will look like at age 25, 30, 35, 40--and so on. TWEET: Average people wait, and winners create. @IamMarcusRD #chasingdreams Finding mentors If you don’t have a starting point, how do you figure out your gifts? Marcus says the first step is to find a mentor. Find someone whom you want to be like. We usually frown upon copying what someone else is doing, but it’s not wrong to copy someone else if you are molding and growing yourself. Two mentors that Marcus learns from every day are Jim Rohn and Steve Harvey. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Nothing is as hard as it seems. In honor of women’s history month, today’s show features a previous guest who’s still hard at work chasing her dreams and helping others chase theirs. You can catch her first appearance on Chasing Dreams back in Episode 97. Elaine Williams has helped hundreds of people with their confidence in front of the camera and in front of audiences. She takes people who are overcome with fear and turns them into confident public speakers, whether they are addressing 5 or 5000. She has 40+ years’ experience in professional performing and TV appearances on shows such as SNL, America’s Got Talent, and HBO. Elaine uses her two degrees in drama to help train her students and clients in their own media appearances. Spots are filling up fast for her next training program, Captivate the Crowd. That little voice Have you heard it? We all have it---”that little voice.” It’s the voice of fear that stops us from moving forward, chasing the dream, and taking the leap. That voice never really goes away, but Elaine can teach people how to manage it. She teaches her clients how to “navigate the critic” by coming from the inside out. Elaine’s focus for performers and public speakers is on the preparation and rehearsal. She says that even veterans have nervousness, but a professional learns to manage it well. TWEET: Don’t let your fear keep you from chasing your dreams. #chasingdreams Influencing others Are you even aware of the effect that living YOUR dream can have on others? Elaine explains why it’s super important to be authentic in your structure and creativity and to celebrate your wins. Elaine learned early on to take the time to journal after every set, show, or speech. She listed three things that worked well and what she could do better next time. This practice helps active learning and maximizes your time and energy. Journaling allows you to see the growth in yourself over time. TWEET: Journaling allows you to see the growth in yourself over time. Celebrate yourself! #chasingdreams Fighting fear We’ve all felt it---the fear that comes from trying something new or stepping boldly outside our comfort zone. Fear comes in many forms and with many faces, and its companion, limiting beliefs, can work together with fear to trip you up big time. Being really authentic means giving of yourself fully. Elaine says that she would rather work with 8-10 deeply committed people who are ready to work, than with 100 people who are afraid to be authentic. It takes courage in the face of fear to go deeper, but chasing YOUR dreams serves to inspire so many other people. Salespeople often adopt a commodity selling mindset instead of a value-based mindset, which leaves them making less money than they could have made. They find themselves asking, “how low can you go?” Jonathan Dale works with RS&I, a nationwide company with nine branches throughout the United States. They have become the largest distributor and sales agent of dish networks. Anyone wanting the ability to resell dish networks must go through RS&I to do so. They also own HughesNet, one of the largest satellite internet providers. Jonathan manages the Vivint portfolio. As a sales leader, he teaches sales reps how to keep the sales process simple by breaking it down. Jonathan has had so many different experiences with both sellers and partners. It brings a whole other level of complexity to his role as a sales leader. Focus on value He remembers knocking on doors to sell home security systems for a company called Pinnacle. It is where he learned the ‘Art of the Sale.' Although he didn't particularly love it, he admits that he did learn from it. The following year, after several failures, he fully understood the sales process and realized he was a salesperson. It required taking a step back and looking at sales in a whole new way. Jonathan believes that salespeople commonly place a stigma on sales, or have a mindset about it, that prevents them from being successful. It is a mindset that they have to sell based on price. Jonathan's biggest struggle when training new reps in the home security industry is teaching them to become more of a value salesperson versus a commodity sales rep. He wants them to pitch the overall value of the service rather than diluting the service. Let the customer decide what the spending habits will be. The opportunity for a sales rep to make the most money is when the customer is comfortable with where he wants to be. Often times, as sales reps, we want to fit each customer into the same size box. Yet, at the end of the day, if we try to force that fit, we lose money. Forcing our clients into a package that they do not need only leads to chargebacks. Don't compete on price Jonathan works with over 350 different retailers that take Vivint as a secondary, tertiary, and even fourth line sale. It is a struggle to get them to understand that he doesn't want them to compete on price. Instead, he wants them to have a conversation about the value of the service and let the customer decide if the product fits their needs. Sales reps, however, are prone to touting the price because it seems easier. Jonathan made an interesting transition two years ago which was actually detrimental for a few months. He moved from home security sales - a totally valuable sale - to satellite sales which was more of a commodity. He realized he was losing money because he wasn't committed to the value of the product. Often times, sales reps want to take the path of least resistance - the easier sale. If you can provide the customer with benefits, instead of simply selling features, you create value in your product. By allowing the customer to then determine his spending habits, your earning potential is maximized. Don't lead with your own wallet When I sold training classes for $10K a class, the most money I had ever had in the bank at one time was $3,000. It made no sense to me. I just couldn't understand why someone would spend that much money. As a result, it definitely limited my ability to sell. I needed to realize that my clients would get a huge return on that $10K investment - that there was a value to what I offered. [Tweet "Don't assume what the prospects can, or cannot afford, based on your own wealth. #SpendingHabits"] We don't know their spending habits or capabilities. Instead, believe that your product is the best in the industry regardless of what the competitors offer. Know that your prospects will pay for it because it is the best product available. Keep it simple Keep it simple, silly! K.I.S.S is an acronym that Jonathan keeps in mind when he teaches the retail process to his sales reps. Look at the product in total. Do not ‘product spew,' meaning, do not lecture your prospects on every single detail of the product because that is not what they need. Instead, sell the benefit of the product. Increase the value of the product by explaining the ways it can serve the customer. When the question of price arises, turn it back around and ask the customer what he feels it is worth. If all went well - if the sales rep has created significant value in his presentation - the customer will be pleasantly surprised when presented with the cost because he has placed an even higher value on it. Commodity selling means to provide the customer with the necessary scenarios to imagine for himself the benefit of your service. Know that value should exceed cost Everyone wants to know what's in it for them. They want to know the biggest return they can get on any investment. As sales reps, keep that in mind. The sales pitch has to continually revolve around it. When the customer can see the value - when he understands what is in it for him - he will buy. At a recent door-to-door conference, Jonathan was looking for a new accountant when he approached an accountant booth a few rows away from his own booth. They told him everything he wanted to hear. Without even knowing the cost, Jonathan was ready to sign because he immediately understood the value they offered. It was a no-brainer. In the end, the new accountant service was more expensive than the old service he had been using, but to Jonathan, the value exceeded the cost. Keep up with the evolving world of sales As a sales leader, Jonathan spends a lot of time on the road. He ‘gets down in the trenches' with his sales teams to introduce new ideas and to show them how to make changes that, despite sometimes being more difficult at first, will bring in more money in the long run. He sets the example for his team. In sales, we sometimes get into a comfortable rut regardless of results. We can't afford, however, to continue down a road that does not deliver results. The sales industry is continually evolving and changing. New ideas and new processes are constantly created. You have to study and keep up with the times. Have fun as well. The sales process can be a fun way to learn about how people think. Figure out how people think and use it to your advantage. Be forward thinking in your sales approach. “How Low Can You Go?” episode resources The best way to reach Jonathan is via email at Jon.dale@rsiinc.com. What’s the greatest gift you can give to someone else? It’s a debatable subject, but what could possibly be more valuable to someone with kidney disease than to receive a kidney from a living donor? Today’s show introduces you to an amazing person with a truly amazing story. Jason Nothdurft is a friend of mine and a true superhero. He’s a married, 32-year-old police dispatcher with a 2-year-old puppy and his first child due in April. Jason donated his kidney in 2014, and has dedicated much of his free time to advocating on behalf of kidney patients and living organ donors. The saying is true: “Not all superheroes wear capes.” Jason is a remarkable person with a spirit of compassion and sacrifice, and I’m thrilled to share his journey of being an organ donor to highlight this important cause. Learning from mistakes What did you want to be as a kid? Police dispatcher is probably not a profession that many people aspire to, and even though it’s not a glamorous job, the dispatchers are the ultimate first responders. They are the first point of contact when people need help in emergency situations. When Jason started out, he admits that he was intimidated by parts of the job and doubted his ability to respond correctly to emergencies. How did he learn? By making mistakes. His lessons to others are that there are always things to learn and ways to improve. TWEET: We all learn by making mistakes. It’s one of the best ways to improve! @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams Saying YES and NO How do you handle the age-old dilemma of when to say YES and when to say NO? For Jason, he learned that he couldn’t focus on all the things he wanted to do--and do them well. In reducing his stress levels, he chose instead to focus on 1-2 things, and even went to his boss and explained that he needed to scale back. These brave decisions can be selfish AND selfless at the same time. Mental health is not openly discussed among law enforcement, but we need to improve on this, remove the stigma, and provide resources. TWEET: We need to remove the stigma of mental health issues for those in the law enforcement field. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams The best sacrifice Have you ever considered being a living organ donor? Jason stepped in when the stepfather of one of his best friends needed a kidney. Jason was 27 when he made the decision to be tested, along with a small group of seven friends. Jason was the one who matched, so the donation was made in 2014. Jason attributes his willingness to volunteer to growing up in a family of public servants, always learning to help and serve others in the community. To this day, Jason and the recipient remain great friends who celebrate together each January as the anniversary of the surgery rolls around. TWEET: ”Don’t give up. You’ll face roadblocks. As we approach the end of 2018, have you spent any time reflecting on your year? On this, the last episode of the year, we’re spending some time reflecting on 2018, which was filled with the loss of many wonderful people. As much as we look back, though, it’s also a time to look forward to what’s coming up in 2019. Some good things about 2018 What moves have you made in 2018? One thing I did was to move back to Baltimore, allowing me to be closer to my family, which is a good thing. I’ve also found a work-life balance that works for me. I took a trip to India and truly learned how to relax and be “in the moment”---and unplug. I had several nieces and cousins get married this year. Concerning the podcast, we hit 150 episodes this year and exceeded 150,000 downloads, which is utterly amazing! As we look ahead, think about the next phase for you and how you can improve. TWEET: “Life is figuring out who you are---and owning it.” #chasingdreams My top five lessons learned in 2018 What lessons have you learned this year? I want to share my Top Five, starting with #5: Get help. You don’t have to do it all yourself. People are ready and willing to help. #4: Find your voice and your vision. The world needs YOU and your uniqueness. #3: Embrace your fears. For me, it’s my fear of heights, so I have plans in place to face that fear in 2019. #2: Prioritize mental health. Negative influences can affect your life in bad ways. #1: YOU are what’s important. Each person is unique, distinct, and important. TWEET: “Don’t let fear hold you back from your greatness.” #chasingdreams Find YOUR value Do you know how you affect the people around you? As a twin, I had to learn that no one person is more important than another, no matter what your status in life. Your light that shines out has an effect on all the people around you. Your story has a ripple effect that you don’t even realize. Don’t be the person your parents want you to be, but live YOUR life and be true to that. TWEET: “I truly learned how to relax and vacation this year.” #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [1:00] Reflecting on the past year and some of the tough losses [3:05] Amazing things from 2018 [5:28] Learning how to relax [9:32] Embracing new things with clarity [11:40] Lessons learned, beginning with Get help [16:04] Find YOUR voice [18:34] Embrace your fears [23:55] The importance of mental health [33:34] YOU are what’s important RESOURCES MENTIONED: Aimee on Facebook Aimee on Twitter Aimee on Instagram Aimee on LinkedIn TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: “I learned to truly savor and enjoy the moment I was in.” #chasingdreams TWEET: “I wish more people could experience that feeling of tranquility and calm.” #chasingdreams
How often does self-sabotage, fear, or doubt get in your way? Do your priorities align to give you balance and fulfillment in the life you want to live? We are covering these topics and more with practical tips from someone who is using her journey to help others in personal growth. Kelly Resendez is a mom, business executive, bestselling author, and influencer. She loves helping others with strategies to overcome self-sabotage and find more joy. She’s the author of the new and already popular book, Big Voices, and is the founder of the women-empowered network of the same name. Kelly is passionate about helping people increase joy, reduce suffering, and learn to think differently. It’s her own journey that has helped her create the strategies and tools she shares in her books. Kelly is currently the Executive Vice President of Paramount Partners Group, which is a division of Loan Pal. She uses the same concepts of mindfulness, self discovery, and goal setting to help those in the mortgage and real estate industries create successful businesses. Why Kelly wrote the book Doesn’t everyone struggle with self-sabotage at some point? Kelly believes, as we all should, that everyone deserves to overcome fear, overthinking, and anxiety. Part of the responsibility we have in going through our journey is to grow and gain wisdom so we can share our story with others. Kelly’s book is an outgrowth of her journey and what she has been through. It’s a personal growth journey that began15 years ago. Now, her desire is to help others get to places of authenticity and self-actualization faster than she did. TWEET: Don’t sabotage yourself - you can overcome fear, overthinking, and anxiety! @BigVoicesKelly #chasingdreams How we can help our kids As a parent, isn’t it a major concern to have our kids prepared for life and its struggles? We have to teach them to be wide awake and mindfully prepared for life, when their peers are not. Kelly found that the process of this growth can’t be forced or even affected, but it has to unfold naturally. As individuals, we have to endure enough pain that we “wake up” and make the necessary changes. The problem is that we send mixed messages to our children and make it more difficult for them to avoid the pitfalls. We have to be mindful as parents and be intentional about raising children in direct opposition to how the rest of the world raises them, or it will be a difficult process. TWEET: We have to teach our kids to be wide awake and mindfully prepared for life, even when their peers are not. @BigVoicesKelly #chasingdreams Getting the life you want Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the life you want---right now? It’s a process, and Kelly shares some practical tips for getting there. You have to get clear about your priorities and create the vision of the life you want to live and how you want to feel. It’s not enough to set goals, because you’ll fall into the trap and get stuck with just setting new goals and never feeling filled with joy and gratitude. Kelly says to open your eyes each morning and be bathed in gratitude. YOU have the power to change your outlook and the outcome. Get clear about the help that you need and don’t be afraid to ask. Commit to discipline and take action. TWEET: Get clear about the help that you need and don’t be afraid to ask. What is progress? What does it mean to you? How do you measure it? On this final solo episode of August, we are discussing all things progress. Join us to learn more. What it takes to chase your dream Are you willing to put in the work? No dream happens with the snap of your fingers. Any dream requires work to be done and steps to be taken. First, acknowledge your dream, and then put in the work to get the results. Many times you have to figure out what work you need to do to accomplish the goals you desire. Sometimes you may see others who have a seemingly easy time accomplishing the things you may struggle with---it’s frustrating. Remember this: there is no feeling so awesome as knowing your hard work has paid off. TWEET: Don’t compare your “Chapter 1” to someone else’s “Chapter 20.” #chasingdreams Run your own race Are you comparing yourselves to others? Everyone has to run their own race. What I accomplish or don’t accomplish doesn’t affect other people. If its MY goal, then it’s up to me to figure out how to balance life and responsibilities to focus on my goals. When you get past the struggle to get to the goal, then you can learn the lessons that are there for you. You can look back and see what you did right and what you could have done better. Don’t compare yourself to someone else, because you don’t know what their story and their struggles have been. TWEET: Everyone has to run their own race. #chasingdreams The myth of overnight success Have you ever thought that someone was “an overnight success”? The term is a myth. We may think someone has overnight success, but we don’t know the background story and we do them a disservice and dismiss their hard work when we call them an overnight success. Everyone has to pay their dues and your path may deviate from the one someone else took. Don’t put the pressure on yourself to mimic someone else’s progress. You have it within you to accomplish YOUR progress and run YOUR race at your pace. How would you define “abuse”? Unfortunately, such a stigma exists around the idea of abuse, how it occurs, and what it entails, that people are afraid to even talk about it. The truth is that many people have some sort of abuse either in their past or in their present. This conversation is another way to honor and recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. I’m thrilled to bring you another expert, who has amazing things to teach us today! Abigail Manning is creating awareness on authentic health, which prevents and ends ALL forms of abuse. She has done five years of research on abuse and is an Indiana University Communications double major in cognitive, social, and behavioral theories. Combining her academic background with her personal experience with childhood abuse and domestic violence, she provides unique and transformative workshops and speeches that truly empower others. The Mental Health Stigma Do you know someone who suffers from mental illness? As more and more people are affected by backgrounds of abuse and depression, we must realize that ANYONE can suffer from mental illness. Common responses might be, “It doesn’t happen in MY family; it doesn’t happen to strong people; it doesn’t happen to smart people.” Mental health is simply a topic that we don’t talk about. Abigail’s focus is on “authentic health.” Depression can be a product of past abuse and can be linked to other things. Whatever the circumstance, it takes ownership to work past the struggles. Abigail tells us why the words we use really matter in getting the help we need and deserve. TWEET: People choose #addictions to mask their feelings and sometimes see suicide as the only way out. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams Helpful Words What are the words that a struggling person needs to hear? How about “I believe you and I care about you. Let’s get you some qualified help.” Abigail’s advice is to find a trusted person and don’t let yourself become isolated. Use language that feels comfortable to you and don’t be afraid to ask for help and resources. It’s hard to look someone in the eye and reveal that you’re struggling with mental health. Find phone resources that can help. Abigail’s workshops are designed to help any group navigate through all forms of abuse and build a pathway to authentic health. Perpetrators want nothing more than to take your power and control. If you are strong, then no one can take that from you. TWEET: The #1 thing an abuser or perpetrator wants to take from you is CONTROL. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams How to Look for Bullying Behavior Have you seen bullying behavior on social media? It’s all around us in different forms. Abigail has a “purple threads” theory, showing how bullying behavior gets reinforced, either positively or negatively. She teaches people verbal skills so they don’t have to hide. Most people aren’t even aware of what abuse really is, and even though it is complicated, it’s easy to spot if you simplify the definition. Look for a repeated cycle of any psychological, verbal, physical, sexual, or financial abuse. It takes work to strengthen yourself and become aware of abusive behavior, but Abigail can teach you how to spot the red flags in any relationship. TWEET: Don’t go it alone. Find the qualified help you need. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:22] The importance of mental health [2:31] The power of words [3:36] How addictions mask our feelings [5:39] Places to find help [7:16] Abigail’s work on a national scale [9:04] Going into schools and workplaces with help for the abused and the abusers [13:04] Is abuse a socioeconomic issue?[ [14:59] Bullying [19:56] What financial abuse is: using money for power and control [21:19] The different forms of abuse [26:19] Ways to strengthen yourself to prevent abuse [33:11] The ripple effect RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Abigail’s Website Abigail on Facebook Abigail on Twitter Abigail on LinkedIn TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: The words “abuse” and “victim” were words I refused to claim in my world. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams TWEET: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” --Eleanor Roosevelt @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams TWEET: The truest self I can be is secure, loving, ethical, and fearless. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams
Getting started with your online business can be overwhelming for a number of reasons. Do you find yourself creating your content, but unable to finish because of endless revising and refining? Do things always get in the way of your time to work on your online business, even if you set a schedule for it? Of course, we want our digital products to be good, or perfect if possible… but how perfect is perfect enough to stop and do the next step? How long will that take? Scheduling time to work on your online business is to be expected, but why doesn't it always work? These are just some of the reasons we feel stuck in our online business, and it can be very frustrating. Well, hold your horses, y'all, because in this week's episode we will help our guest tackle and overcome these issues to help him start and grow his online business. We're sure you'll learn a lot in our brainstorm and it's going to help you take your own online business to the next level too! Our guest today is Dan Franz. Dan is a general practitioner in Psychology and does mental health counseling. His wife is a teacher, and they have two children. Dan did a group practice for 5 to 6 years working with and supervising other therapists, but recently switched back to doing his own one-on-one practice after the technicalities of having a larger practice deemed quite taxing. Since the beginning of his mental health counseling, he started writing-related blogs to give him an online presence with the goal of leading people to his one-on-one practice. This got him to acquire a list of about 800 people from his online writing, how awesome is that?! And now, with his growing desire to help and reach more people, as well as have more time to spend with his family, Dan went on to take his business online (with an advantage of already having an existing following from his online presence). With the majority of his digital product outline already done, he struggles with its completion due to constant revising and refining. His work time for his online business also seems to get interrupted a lot, causing a delay in his progress. But hey! Everyone needs a little help to get back in the right direction and get to that next step... sometimes even counselors need guidance. :) So, join us as we help Dan overcome these setbacks -- dealing with the overwhelm, prioritization, having the right mindset -- as well as discussing strategies and direction on creating and selling his digital product. Mary Nichols, aka DJ Fusion of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast, is a US mixshow and events DJ whose main musical focus is the Black Music/Urban Music genre. She founded the FuseBox Radio Broadcast when she was an undergraduate student at Rutgers University in 1988 and worked at Rutgers University Radio. Along with her co-host, fellow mix DJ and business partner, Ausar Ra Black Hawk, DJ Fusion says the weekly radio show and podcast exist to bring the balance back to black radio. They focus on bringing a diverse mix of independent and mainstream black music, like Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, Reggae, Rock, Funk, House and more from all over the world, along with relevant commentary, news, and guest interviews for the international listening masses. From its original roots, the FuseBox Radio Broadcast has spread to over 25+ websites, FM and internet radio stations and podcast distribution channels. More than 20 years of chasing dreams When did you find your dream? For Mary, she didn’t know when she started working the 12-2 am shift at her college radio station that the radio lifestyle would become her passion. Growing up, any extra money she had would be spent on music and books, but she never realized how much music would become a huge part of her life! Now, she has hosted the radio show for 20 years and the podcast for 12 years. She never aspired to be a media personality, and even describes herself as shy until she gets to know someone. Nevertheless, she has found the dream that she never plans to give up. It began with rudimentary technology and has blossomed to give her a worldwide audience. TWEET: “I have found the dream that I never plan on giving up!” @fuseboxradio #chasingdreams The show, politics, and unexpected opportunities How can you help others find their voice? Mary has done this through helping independent artists become mainstream, and her podcast has revealed interesting career trajectories for some of her featured artists. The show has also given voice to different political parties and their platforms, when they weren’t being heard through major news media. The show even survived the political turmoil of the 2016 election season, and listeners have appreciated the honest transparency of the show, as evidenced by the positive feedback. Mary says that even when she faced personal difficulties, the show became a constant and has given her unexpected opportunities that she never could have imagined. TWEET: “Opportunities I would never have imagined have come from my show!” @fuseboxradio #chasingdreams A passionate side hustle Why put in the extra work for a radio show and podcast? This isn’t even her full-time job, but doing the radio show and podcast are things DJ Fusion is passionate about and absolutely loves doing. “If I could make the money I need with the show, I’d quit my 9-5 job tomorrow!” Of course, the supplemental income from any side hustle is nice, but when you are passionate about a constructive activity, then you don’t mind doing the extra work. Mary says she can’t ever see a time when she isn’t doing the show and has no plans to give it up. She writes from her secret lair in Austin, Texas, which she shares with her husband. “I Can do it----Watch”: Why are you afraid to fail? Jo shares some lessons learned through self-teaching and pushing through early mistakes. She says that trying something you’ve never done before means you don’t know that you can fail. It’s when others tell you that you can’t do it that the fear and uncertainty creep in. YOU must decide whether or not to believe them. Kayo Williams is a native Chicagoan, film composer, songwriter, music producer, and mastering engineer at Kayquarii Productions. He’s served and advocated for several creative arts industry organizations, like Chicago Ideas Week, Grammy Producers and Engineers Wing, and the Gene Siskel Film Center BHFF Film Festival Community Counsel. His passion for music can only be described as a never-ending journey of discovery. Introduced to music at the age of 5 when his mother bought him his first instrument as a Christmas gift, he had mastered seven instruments by early adulthood. His love for various music styles helped him understand their powerful role in cinema. He’s been an active member and advocate for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the Grammy Producers and Engineers Wing, and EARS (Engineering and Audio Recording Society). TWEET: Be a life long learner - I’m still learning---every single day. #KayoWilliams The Power of Music: What is your favorite music from a movie? We can all probably name several that stick with us and are immediately recognizable. Kayo shares how music becomes another character in a film. The themes and emotional points in the music help us all connect with films. Kayo has a few favorite movies (because of their music) and composers, and he shares them with us! TWEET: Create every single day-----and pay attention. Not an Easy Industry: You may think the music industry is an easy one to get into and “make it,” but Kayo knows that isn’t the truth. The business is relationship-based, even though it might be talent that gets you in the door. The challenge didn’t intimidate him early on, but it’s made him more careful about how he invests his time and creativity. TWEET: Don’t let structure be the god to your #creativity, but let it be a tool. The Beauty of Collaboration: What can I do to get where I need to be? Kayo explains how asking and answering this question has helped him in the music industry. His advice is to not be afraid to collaborate, because collaboration is the fuel that produces creativity. Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. Super excited to be back with you again today as Jocelyn and I continue our story about our entrepreneurial journey so that we can inspire you and show you what is possible, kind of what happened to us, this whirlwind ride that led to where we are today with the Flipped Lifestyle as compared to our old 9-to-5 jobs. In our last episode, we talked about how we got married, how we ended up finally getting married, then we got engaged. It was a really, really whirlwind process because I was coaching football. I just got a job at West Virginia as a graduate assistant. Jocelyn was living in Lexington, Kentucky. I was moving to Morgantown, and I basically called Jocelyn one day and we had a nice logical discussion about if we should get married or not. Jocelyn: Of course we did. Shane: Of course we did. Jocelyn: Because that's how I roll. Shane: I like to tell Jocelyn I was on one knee on the other end of the phone, she just couldn't see it at the time. Jocelyn: Yeah right. Shane: That is totally not true. We were just seriously having a good conversation. We decided that it would be a good idea that we should get married on July 3. What year did we get married? Jocelyn: 2004. Shane: 2004. Okay, that was a total man thing. Not even remembering the year. I do remember the date.

We're so excited to share this week's Our Story series with y'all! Last week, we let you in about our early life, where we came from, what it was like before Jocelyn and I knew each other. This week's chapter is actually about how we met in college at the University of Kentucky. The first time I ever got to talk to Jocelyn was when I was convinced that she was the woman I was going to marry. Chapter highlights How I won Jocelyn's love and attention How I tricked Jocelyn into being my girlfriend. Brace yourselves, things are going to get cheesy and then hilarious… really, really fast. [Tweet ""Don't live a "good enough" life, you don't have to live life planning for the worst case scenario.""] [Tweet ""Choose a mentality of abundance, success, drive -- strive for something more.""] [Tweet ""There is unlimited potential in all of us.""] BONUS TRIVIA: Gravity: How Shane got Jocelyn's attention... more or less. Jocelyn was born on March 27th, and I (Shane) was born on March 28th. When I told Jocelyn this, she was understandably skeptical. We both dreamed of going to the University of Kentucky, both drove a Buick, and had eventually moved to the “Wellness Dorm.” Talk about fate! If you enjoyed this week's chapter, let us know in the comments or better yet, leave us an iTunes review. Next week, we'll talk about our first careers, when we really started pursuing our dreams and I'm going to share the story of my romantic storybook proposal to Jocelyn and how I convinced her to be my bride. What's up, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. Great to be back with you again today. This is going to be a solo show with just me and Jocelyn. We are not going to have a guest on the program today. As we continue to tell you a little bit more about our story, about how two normal people from Kentucky were able to start an online business with no money, no time, while working full-time, raising kids, and basically, how maybe you can do it, too. That is what we are doing today, we are talking about the next chapter in our story. Last week, we told you a little bit about our early life about where we came from, where we grew up, before Jocelyn and I knew each other. The next chapter in our story is actually about how we met in college at the University of Kentucky. Jocelyn: Alright, in our last episode, we were talking about how young I was when I went to college. At the time, I thought I was all grown up and independent but looking back now, I realized how incredibly young and naïve I really was. Shane: You technically were not even legally of age. You are not even 18 years old when you moved away from home.

It's feeling like a legit side business. At 50, I think I will be able to concentrate on it exclusively. Last fall, I was making pizza money. Now, I'm almost paying for my health insurance. Can't Miss Moment: Our Can't Miss Moment for this week is a Wednesday afternoon walk with the kids and the dogs. The other day, it was a Wednesday, it was around 11 o'clock and I was kind of getting burned out, and I was trying to figure some stuff out, the kids were here. I was like, "You know what? I'm not going to work the rest of the day." I just shut everything down, got the kids, got the dogs, threw them in the truck -- I didn't throw them in the truck, like the back of the pickup for anything. I actually got in the truck. We drove up to this little hunting club that we are a mem...
Welcome back, my friends! I've been off for about six weeks and you got mini episodes while I was gone. Sort of like the appetizers you put out at a party to keep people around until you get to the main course. Well, we're back to the main course again and what I thought would happen over the last six weeks is not AT ALL what happened. Some people plan years in advance and then things go off without a hitch. I apparently can't even plan six weeks of my life without it becoming a complete train wreck. My son went into middle school this year and while I knew the transition would be tough for him, the first week was a nightmare. A few days of tears on the way home, "Mom, can you homeschool me?" Well, yes, I'd love too, but not because you don't want to deal with a new experience. His issues aren't with other kids. They're organizational and apparently the newness of the whole experience was completely overwhelming. Having lockers, changing classes, dressing out for gym, getting what you need where you need it and when has been really hard for him. He's got more organizational issues than the average 6th grade boy (is that possible?) and I made an extra trip into town every day for the first week and and a half taking forgotten stuff back and forth. But apparently, the eclipse straightened him out, because he hasn't forgotten anything critical since then. Another thing that happened in the last six weeks was that I faced some unexpected decisions about work. A combination of circumstances and financial issues combined in a way that I found myself seriously considering looking for a new job. I've worked for myself for 20 years. That idea is a huge shift for me. I realized entrepreneurship is a part of how I define myself. And interviewing. I haven't thought about interviewing in several decades! A new publishing project came up as well, that turned from a small 30 minute weekly commitment to a daily article on a new website. So, I decided to put off any job decisions until the new project is either under control or finished. In the last five weeks I've started my son in a new school, interviewed for a job for the first time in 20 years, built a new website, started writing for it every day, and completed a few art pieces for that project. I took on two new roles at church and expanded the reach of the one that I was already doing. I've dealt emotionally with my son miraculously having turned from a child to a pre-teen. I'm not sure exactly when that happened, but I'm apparently the mother of a middle schooler. I've dealt with the idea of no longer being an entrepreneur--when I've seen myself that way for most of my life. I've prepped for a job interview, done the interview and then dealt with the disappointment of not being chosen for the work, after deciding I really did want it. I've dug into some emotional issues of gender and race. It has been a draining six weeks. A lot has happened. So much emotional change. I tell you this to catch you up. But, also to talk about change. This has been a crazy transitional 6 weeks. Here are a few lessons I've thought about as I've gone through it. First, we don't always know where things are going to lead, but not knowing doesn't mean they won't be valuable experiences. I wasn't looking for a new job. But a few options came across my path. One of them I really didn't think I was supposed to get...but I thought I was supposed to apply for it anyway. I'm still not sure what that was about and I may never know. But, I do know it already led to someone recommending me for a different position. Even if I continue to work for myself for the next 20 years, I learned an awful lot about myself going through the interview process. I'm not suggesting you go randomly interview for jobs you have no intention of taking, but I am saying that you should be aware of opportunities around you in all areas of life, even if you don't understand why or where they'll lead. [Tweet "Don't be afraid to take a new or unexpected path because you aren't sure what the end game is."] Second, when everything's new and confusing, like my son's experiences at his new school, remember that "new" is a short term problem. I kept telling him that in a few weeks, all the things that seemed so strange and new would turn into the norm. He'd get it figured out and then we'd just be dealing with the stuff that's truly hard for him. And that's what's happened. He now knows what to expect. He knows how to navigate the class changes and the lockers. It's still not second nature, but it's not overwhelming. When you're in a new situation, remember that "new" turns into "old hat" very quickly. Just hang on, it will get easier every day. And lastly, if things really do change, be willing to adjust for new opportunities. Which brings me to where the podcast is headed. My new project will run through the holidays and it's going to require a good chunk of time. It came up in the last two weeks and became something much larger than I originally intended. If you're a Christian woman interested in a daily article digging into what scripture says about what it is to be a woman, I'd love for you to check it out. Even before that came up, I was looking at making some changes to the podcast. Because of the new project, I was really thinking I was going to have to put the podcast on pause until the new year...until an angel friend of mine offered to do some of the production work for me. I'm eliminating the artwork, the coffee talk emails and the worksheets. I'll do the episode, continue to publish on Sundays and send out a Monday email with the audio link and a few application questions to consider. So, "What if's" will continue to come your way, with those adjustments. Things have changed for me in the last six weeks. Things will continue to change. Things will change for you as well. Things always change. Even when you aren't sure where they're going, be open to new opportunities. Trust that process is as important as the end goal. Walk in confidence, trust in process. It's important know that "new" doesn't last very long, things will normalize quickly. Be willing to adjust for changes if it means a good opportunity. So, the answer to, "What if things change?" is that you'll be fine. If things change, you'll be fine. You might be afraid. We're all afraid. I had more fear in the midst of these changes than I expected to have, more than I've had in a long time. Fear is normal. Just don't let it determine your course. [Tweet "Fear is normal. Just don't let it determine your course."] It's good to be back with you and I'm so grateful for the help to keep this guy rollin'! Because this decision was made at the last minute, I have no idea what topic is coming up next to give you a preview. But, I can tell you that I'll be back next week with another episode and I look forward to chatting with you again. Have a great week!
Need ideas on how to build your membership into an engaging community? Listen in as we discuss strategies on membership community to help our guest for today. On the Flipped Lifestyle podcast this week, we have the online entrepreneur behind ECHE Music, Simone Henry. Having been born to a family passionate about music, Simone grew up loving every aspect of it and used to sing in their church with her sisters. She was also fascinated with business and the internet, and went on to college and got a degree in Information Systems from business school. The Christian Jukebox was a wondrous blend of her many passions. She had gotten the idea after her sister emailed from Spain asking for help to find a recording of a song for the accompanying musicians to play during her performance. Simone did what any devoted sister would do, she scoured the internet but couldn't find a quality recording. She thought "there ought to be a place on the internet where I can get quality Christian music,” and thus, The Christian Jukebox was born! This was simply the beginning. She later relinquished The Christian Jukebox and had launched ECHE Music in 2013. Her latest venture intends to bring together indie Christian artists, helping them learn about the music industry so that they can better spread their positive message to the world as well as sustain their lives and ministries. Simone is determined to turn her current membership layout into an indie artist's nest. Her question now is, how does one create an engaging membership community? “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4: 23 Satan wants your tongue! Why? Because your tongue is the programmer of your life. If he can get control of your tongue, he can get control of you and your future. Have you noticed that when God created the universe, He used words? In other words, He "spoke" everything into existence. God said, "Let there be light" and there was light. In fact, throughout the first chapter of Genesis, we read over and over, "God said . . . And there was." "God said . . . And there was." "God said . . . And there was." When God said something, it came into existence. Well, since we are made in God's image, we function the same way. When we say something, it comes into existence. This makes the words we speak of utmost importance, wouldn't you agree? So, what words are you speaking? Are you speaking words that agree with God's Word, or are you speaking words that agree with Satan? The Bible calls Satan "a liar and the father of lies" (John 8: 44). One definition of the verb "lie" is "to twist the truth". Whenever we speak words that contradict what God says about us, we are twisting the truth and allowing ourselves to be used as tools of Satan. We are acting as tongue-twisters. Not a good thing! "Your tongue is the programmer of your life." ~ Dr. MaryAnn Diorio Proverbs 18: 21 tells us that "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." This means that with your tongue you can point your life toward death or toward life. Pretty heavy stuff! Which will it be for you? As one who has struggled much in the area of the tongue, I humbly offer three suggestions that have helped me: 1--Think before you speak (Ecclesiastes 5: 2). 2--Choose your words carefully (Matthew 12: 36-37; Psalm 19: 14). 3--Ask the Lord to put a guard over your mouth (Psalm 141: 3). Applying these three principles to your speech will radically transform your speech and help you to align it with God's Word/ Remember: Your tongue is the programmer of your life. Make sure you program your life with God's Word. Then watch your life become filled with life. Now, it's YOUR turn: Do you have trouble controlling your tongue? What can you do about that? Please leave your response in the Comment Box below. Thank you! “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4: 23 Victim or Victor. Both words begin with the same four letters, but they are complete opposites in definition. Which one are you? Let's take a look at some of the characteristics of each. See where you fit in. VICTIMS: --believe they have little or no control over their lives. They are swept along by the desires of others and refuse to take responsibility for their lives. They often don't know how to say no. ---think that their past equals their future. They feel condemned and controlled by what happened to them and hopeless that things will ever change. --are ruled by their circumstances. Victims feel powerless to do anything about their circumstances and, hence, succumb to them. VICTORS: --believe that they alone are responsible for their lives. They do not allow others to control their lives. They "own" their lives and take charge of them under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. --know that their past does not equal their future. They feel empowered to make those choices that will create for them the kind of life they want to live. They believe that they have a free will that can change things. --are not ruled by their circumstances. Instead, they rule over their circumstances by the pro-active way in which they respond to their circumstances. So, which one are you? Victim or Victor? "You are a victor to the degree to which you take charge of your life." ~ Dr. MaryAnn Diorio If you discovered that you are a victim, you can change. If you discovered that you are a victor, keep doing what you're doing. But if, like most of us, you found yourself somewhere in-between, take heart. God is still working on us. The fact that we are still on this earth means that God has not finished with us yet. So, be encouraged. It is only by His power that we can be set free from a victim mentality and develop a victor mentality. Ask the Lord to help you see where your thinking is wrong and to change it. Depend on Him to help you break free of the chains of victimization and to walk in the freedom He died to give you. In their pivotal book, It's Not My Fault, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend make a critically important statement: "You can be free from whatever situation surrounds you to the degree that you are willing to take responsibility and ownership for it, even it it's not your fault." So, whether you are a victim or a victor depends on whether or not you choose to take full responsibility for your life--in other words, whether or not you choose to "own" your life. Make that choice now! Choose to be a victor by taking responsbility for your thoughts, your words, and your actions. As you do, you will discover more and more that you are gaining victory over your life instead of being a victim of it. Now, it's YOUR turn: Are you a victim or a victor? How can you tell? Please leave your response in the Comment Box below. Thank you! Real Estate Investing Profits Master Series with Cory Boatright
My guest today – Frank Cava – is easily one of my favorite people. We met awhile back as part of our mastermind group, and we’ve been swapping secrets ever since. I’m excited to have him on the show today because his particular real estate investment strategy is killing it in three different markets right now: rentals, fix-and-flips, and wholesale. How can one guy do so much? Not only is he one of the smartest guys I know (seriously, listen to him break down the numbers), he’s also one of the best guys to work with and for. [youtube]https://youtu.be/oLqgzowmTjw[/youtube] Frank says he owes his success to the fact that he runs his business like a real business and not like a hobby. He’s got a real office and a real staff - a team of 9 that he’s hired, trained, and still manages, and he talks today about what it’s like to take the time to build a team like that. Firstly, you have to be honest about what you know and what you don’t know. Only then will you be able to find the right people to fill in the gaps of your investment strategy. Our guest this week is our very good friend and mentor, the crash test dummy of online business, Pat Flynn. Pat has been in the online business scene since 2008. His website smartpassiveincome.com and the Smart Passive Income podcast has touched the lives of thousands of people in an international level. His mindset along with the choices he made has created an amazing ripple effect. Despite all that fame and fortune, Pat firmly believes that the best part about his job is the amount of quality time he gets to spend with his wife and kids -- now, that's a true family man. We have so many things in common with him and we are just thrilled to share our backstory with y'all, like how Shane came across a random podcast one day (while mowing the lawn!) and was just struck with immediate certainty that this is what we needed to flip our lives upside-down. Also, we're gonna talk about family, life and lessons we've learned along the way. So, hold onto your seats and let's get this show on the road. Fritz Leopold found his way into the recruiting world quite by accident. Since the age of 3, Fritz dreamed of being an architect. Through the process of chasing that dream, he realized it wasn’t as fulfilling as he’d hoped it would be. As new opportunities crossed his path, Fritz realized he needed to pursue his passion for helping others. Along the way, he found himself being invited to be a full time recruiter - and so, he found his true path. Today, Fritz works as a business technology recruiter for McKinsey & Company, where he is able to follow his purpose of helping others. TWEET: Don’t run away from your dreams and always be true to yourself ~ Fritz Leopold Getting to the heart of your dreams. Although dream chasing required Fritz to start over in an entirely new career, he wouldn’t change a thing. He discusses with Aimee J. the process of finding his purpose in the world of recruiting and what it’s like to make such a huge transition. Fritz shares the realities of making such a shift, including facing the financial challenges that might come with it. He also discusses - with great honesty - why it’s essential to follow your true path, even with the sacrifices it might require. For Fritz, once he found that path, he knew it was right. He explains why that makes the initial sacrifices very worthwhile. Regret has no place here. As Fritz delves a bit deeper into the transition process and some of the obstacles he faced, Aimee asks if he has any regrets. Without skipping a beat, Fritz makes it clear that he doesn’t believe in regret. He shares why all experiences are valuable - especially the mistakes. And how we must embrace them as part of learning and growing. He discusses in more detail why you have to be realistic about the fact that shifting gears when it comes to your career means you are starting at the bottom. It’s a humbling experience and one that you must be realistic about before you take the plunge. TWEET: Getting to the heart of your #dreams and chasing them no matter what, on this episode The importance of learning to take feedback. Another key element to making a career change is learning to take feedback. When you switch careers like Fritz did, there will inevitably be a learning curve. That’s where feedback comes in. Fritz discusses why you must embrace feedback because it is the key to your growth as a person and in your career. Fritz also offers a few tips to help you through the transition process, including some steps to take before you even consider making a change. He also discusses the role of headhunters and how to make sure you work with people who truly have your best interests at heart. Being a good interviewee - practice makes perfect. As they close out their chat, Aimee and Fritz discuss the interview process, along with some negotiating tips. When it comes to the interview, says Fritz, the biggest hiccup can be talking about the areas in which you excel. Fritz gives his recommendations on how you can overcome this obstacle (hint: it involves a lot of practice). Fritz also offers his number one piece of advice for fellow dream chasers: Do not be afraid to chase your dreams. Your dreams are what you aspire to be. If you downplay them, you’re never going to be your true self. Don’t run away from your dreams and always be true to yourself. Dream-chasing isn’t always easy. The road is filled with unexpected twists, turns, and bumps. But, when you know you’re following your purpose, you have to keep going. On today’s episode, Aimee J chats with her friend Yuzun Kang. After tapping into his passion for creativity at an early age, Yuzun went on to join Riot Games as development manager and product owner. Getting there wasn’t easy, but Yuzun explains why every experience - even the difficult ones - was worth it. Today’s Chasing Dreams will leave you feeling as though anything is possible. TWEET: Don’t ask for permission; just go for it. Anyone can do anything. Find out more on this episode. Finding your purpose and what it takes to make it your reality. Once Yuzun saw beyond the stereotype of video games, he realized gaming is about taking an interactive experience and using it to communicate how we live our lives. After playing a videogame called Braid, Yuzun was inspired by the philosophical idea behind it and curious to find out if he could make video games his life. Creativity was something he discovered early, tapping into his creative spirit after watching the sequel to “The Neverending Story”. In college, he followed his creative passion by majoring in Creative Writing, but would eventually find himself in Law School. Yuzun explains that he really didn’t like law school and knew right away this wasn’t the life for him, but that the experience was invaluable. He shares how the learnings from law school have been applied to his current career with Riot Games - in very unexpected ways. From a passion for film-making to pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry. Staying true to his creative pursuits, Yuzun found himself being encouraged to apply for a Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry. Growing to love poetry more and more throughout the experience, Yuzun enjoyed his education but always knew there was more for him. Film-making became a passion pursuit as well, but he wouldn’t “settle down” until he was finally able to gain an edge in the gaming industry. After his stint in law school, Yuzun hit the ground running with his sights set on making it in video games. Getting started, however, would be anything but easy. What came next, Yuzun says, would shape his future. TWEET: Always be prepared for #opportunity: on this episode of #ChasingDreams Don’t ask for permission. Just go for it. When Yuzun decided it was time to find out if he really could make it in the video game industry, he knew he’d have to work hard, be very determined, and come up with creative ways to gain notice. He started by searching for interning opportunities in the industry, but wouldn’t get very far. From there, Yuzun found himself writing reviews for games in the hopes this would give him his break. This led to many networking opportunities at gaming events and conferences. Yuzun tells Aimee how networking led to his first job with a video game startup. After much hard work and sacrifice, Yuzun was able to learn a tremendous amount in his experience with the startup. These skills, he says, would help him throughout his career. Yuzun shares some valuable insight into how fellow dream chasers should approach their passions. Being prepared for opportunity is key. As Aimee closes out her chat with Yuzun, they discuss the importance of being ready for opportunity when it comes. Yuzun shares his mindset of hard work, doing your best, and always - always - being ready for opportunity. He goes on to discuss the value of teamwork in building a successful, fulfilling career, and how his team at Riot Games is critical to his career happiness. After sharing many nuggets of wisdom with dreamchasers, Yuzun tells us what’s next for him and shares a few more tips with listeners. Today's guest is Crystal Porter, Ph.D. She is the founder of Mane Insights, a company that gives tailored hair care advice, from a scientific perspective, to women with hair problems. Dr. Porter spent the majority of her 14-year career at L'Oreal, USA where she managed the Physics Laboratory and Consumer Insights teams to study the biophysical characteristics of hair and pigmented skin within different ethnic groups around the world and to understand behaviors that are related to consumers' experiences. During the past eleven years, she has shared knowledge about ethnic hair to fellow scientists and the public at national and international venues. She has also contributed to L'Oreal's global classification of curl in hair and has authored numerous papers, presentations and book chapters on hair straightening and ethnic hair. Her conversation with Rosetta today is full of insights! [Tweet "What I'm doing now, I feel good about having my daughters watching." - Dr. Crystal Porter"] The road to becoming an entrepreneur was motivated by asking the deeper questions. Dr. Crystal Porter was working full time in a very intense role for a large company. Even though she often told her superiors that she couldn't continue to put in the hours that she was being required to give, they didn't seem to understand or even care. Her life continued to be a stressful and her time with family was getting more and more scarce. She had to ask herself the deeper questions about what she wanted from life and what was important to her. That time of questioning is what led her to move into her own business as a way to continue the income she'd become accustomed to but also allow her the time to be with family and do the things that were important to her. Sound familiar? Dr. Porter's story could be a great encouragement to you, be sure to listen! A great example of niching-down to find a great opportunity. [Tweet "Finding a niche and serving it with great profit, on the Happy Black Woman Podcast"] It may not seem very probable that a company could be built purely on the need that Black Women have to have expert advice about how to deal with problems related to their hair. But Dr. Crystal Porter has discovered that not only does a relatively smaller niche such as that provide her ample opportunities for a great income, it also enables her to help many, many people with a very serious area of need. It's an example of how there are many areas of need that nobody is servicing and how you can focus more narrowly to make even more income and meet more needs. Learn how Dr. Porter came to discover this great area of need on this episode. Asking questions as a way of serving her audience. Dr. Crystal Porter explains on this episode how she goes about helping a wide variety of clients who have very different needs, and it's through the asking of good questions. She's able to hone in on the specific needs an individual may have by asking the right questions. Her example is a lesson for any entrepreneur. You may have an idea of what your audience needs or wants but until you actually hear from them, you won't really know. How can you ask better questions of your audience to discover the exact needs they have? Listen to this episode to hear how Dr. Porter does it and how you can take a similar approach in your business. Working consistently within your values is powerfully important for the longevity of your business. In her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, Dr. Crystal Porter was motivated by the disharmony she saw between the type of hours and drive she was required to put in at her place of employment and the inner beliefs she had about the priority her family should have in her life. She didn't like that the sacrifices she was having to make in order to maintain her employment were at conflict with the needs she saw in her family. That's why she made the switch to entrepreneurship. What are your values about life and work? What are you willing to do and what are you not willing to do? How can you leverage your beliefs about family and work to motivate you to build the business you want and need? You'll find great encouragement from Dr. Crystal's story on this episode of Happy Black Woman. Your dreams are probably not going to look like what everyone else thinks they should. Stephanie Matthews’ dreams are a powerful example of that. Stephanie made the choice to change her career focus to pursue what everyone (including her) thought was a long-shot career path, that of becoming a professional musician. She had the talent, no doubt about that, but the odds of her making it professionally were clearly not in her favor. It’s important to listen to those who care about you. But you can also listen too much. Stephanie’s story highlights the difficult decisions that sometimes come from following your dreams. TWEET: Taking the more difficult path and the fruit it bears, on this episode of #ChasingDreams Is it possible to “hit the top” when pursuing your dreams? Many people think it is possible to entirely fulfill your every dream. It could be possible, depending on what the dream is. But Stephanie is one of the most successful people you’ll ever hear of in her field, but she’s quick to say that she won’t ever hit the top. Why? Because she believes that in order to keep growing, she can’t become content with where she is in life. She’s got to keep pushing forward, stretching herself in terms of skills and personal growth. Even though she’s living her dream, she’s still pressing on. That’s an admirable trait in anyone. Find out more about Stephanie’s drive to succeed in this episode. The choice to pursue a dream that was against the odds. Stephanie Williams challenged herself in ways she didn’t fully understand when she chose to educate herself to become a professional musician. Especially in the genre she chose: Classical music. Stephanie’s determination was purely an outgrowth of her love for music and the dream of performing on a big scale. You could search high and low to find an “against the odds” example that is more impressive than hers, and you would come up short. She made her dream come true, but not without the bumps and bruises that the long, hard road of getting there has given her. Hear her story, what keeps her going, and how she’s not satisfied with standing still, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. Everyone has regrets, but Stephanie Williams would not change a thing. Most of us have a handful of mistakes or misjudgments we’ve made that we wish we could go back and do over. But not Stephanie Williams. In her journey to becoming a professional musician and CEO of StringCandy, she’s made plenty of mistakes. But her perspective on those mistakes is not one of wishing for a do-over. She believes that every one of those mistakes and the circumstances around them are what have contributed to her being who she is and to her getting to where she is. Without them, or with changes to them, she thinks the outcome would have been very different. Her interesting perspective on the mistakes she’s made gives a fresh spin to her story. You’ll want to hear it. Advice for those who want to pursue their dreams… from someone who has achieved hers. The hard road to becoming a professional musician was entirely worth it to Stephanie Williams. There’s nothing she regrets about the path she’s been on. When asked what advice she would give to people just starting out on the road toward their dreams, she says to make sure that you’re going for the dreams you want, not those others expect of you. She acknowledges that it’s very hard to butt heads with parents or loved ones who don’t understand or believe in your dream, but in the end, she says you can’t live your life for other people. You’ve got to do what is true to you, so get on with it. We do not have all the answers to some of the questions that you send in; we would never want to tell you wrong, so we decided to start bringing people on who know a little bit more about certain subjects than we do to help you get the exact direction you need in your online business. And we are happy to bring back on the show today, Michael O'Neal from the Solopreneur Hour podcast and solohour.com. Michael, welcome back to the Q&A with S&J. MICHAEL: I am so happy to be here, thank you guys [Crosstalk] SHANE: That's all right man, we're gonna talk dude [Crosstalk] got to keep it tight. JOCELYN: Today's question is from Jonathan Mann, and Jonathan says, “How do I get guests for my podcasts? I want to interview thought-leaders and business people who are successful, but I have no idea how to get them on my show. How do I convince others to take time out of their day to talk to a total stranger, especially when I'm just starting out? ” SHANE: When I read this question, I got this on email, the first person I thought about was Michael O'Neal. I was like, “This is the question we need to ask Michael” because that's what you do. You interview people from all different walks and you got so many great interviews on your podcast, so how do you do it Michael? Especially when you first started out, how did you go out and get those guests and get people to take time out of their day? MICHAEL: By the way, I apologize in advance, no one has ever accused me of brevity. I know these are quick shows. SHANE: That's all right, no problem. MICHAEL: So this is kind of a two-parter and this is one of my favorite hacks that I think is a hidden gem in the podcasting world of how to do this. First of all, just like in all business, this all comes down to relationships. So, there has to be a degree of separation between the person you want and sometimes the person you can get. So you have to first do a little research on relationships and find out who knows who and what's going on. You can do that often on Twitter and find out who is following who and that kind of thing; but initially how I did it was I was very conscious about building a relationship with pat Flynn because I saw him as the center of this universe that I wanted to be in. And to do that, I was very specific and measured on how – and I'm not saying I stalked me but – SHANE: We all do; no, I'm just kidding. MICHAEL: I liked what he had to do, I was listening to him, I was paying attention to his shows, I launched an online social media training product, I wrote to him with a very specific question and it wasn't like “How do I start a podcast?” which I just got the other day, which was amazing to me, but it was a very specific question to my online business.

You're listening to a Q&A with S&J. Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us, each week, as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down, by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on guys? Welcome back to the Q&A with S&J. We got a great question today from one of our Flip Your Life community members and it is about security. We were in the middle of a series right now, about keeping your website and your business safe from hackers, how to avoid getting hacked and how to prevent identity theft. We had our members over in the Flip Your Life community submit a bunch of questions and we are going to answer one of those today. JOCELYN: Today's question is from Marney Ginsberg and Marney says, “For complete newbies, what are your top three, most important recommendations for protecting your website? Thank you for taking this terror and turning it into our good.” SHANE: That is a good description of getting hacked, “Terror” ‘cause man, it was really, really bad. JOCELYN: There was a lot of terror. SHANE: Lot of terror especially over the last few weeks; I would say that first and foremost, the number one thing that you can do today, right now as soon as you turn this podcast off, and we spoke a little bit about this in our podcast this week at fliplifestyle.com/podcast57 is to make yourself have long passwords. Don't have really short, easy-to-remember passwords that use real words, or names, or names of your kids and their birthdays or anything like that. The longer the password is, the better it is. So, I think the number one thing I would do like on your WordPress login is to make sure that you have a long password. Also, you don't need to use “Admin” as your username. Your username should also be something that is a little complex and that is hard to figure out; we don't even use real words in our username anymore. You can make WordPress show you as your name even if your email that you sign up for WordPress or you set up your website with is something like X4g3ztw@gmail.com. You don't have to use “Admin” as your login or your name. Don't make it something easy for someone to figure out. So the first thing I would do is definitely fix that username and password on your WordPress site. When you first set up your website, it may be, you know, “Admin” or you know, mine used to be “Shanesams” as your username and then your password. What you do is you set up, on your WordPress site or whatever it is right now, let's say you are still using “Admin” as your login or you have a really weak password, go in and actually create a brand new user and make it have administrative privileges, and make it something with an email that nobody knows, a username that nobody knows and then you can just make it show as your name. Set up a completely new user, give it a new password and then delete your old account, delete your old user completely. And what that will do is that will make your site really secure because it'll be really tough to login. So the first thing you do, the first tip is definitely don't use admin as your user name, create a really complicated username that nobody else can know but you, and second is having nice, long passwords; length is very important. JOCELYN: When you do create your new user account on WordPress, you do want to make sure that you attribute the content from the old one to th...

JOCELYN: Hey y'all! You're listening to a Q and A with S and J. SHANE: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us each week as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on guys? Welcome back to another Q and A with S and J. This is a special episode, we are going to have a few of these. We are on an airplane right now at 30,000 feet. JOCELYN: And we are trying to not fall asleep because we need to stay awake until we get to our destination so we thought we would answer some of your questions. SHANE: We are going to the Philippines to Chris Ducker's tropical think tank, thanking him right now and we have been awake for 24 hours. This has been a long, long trip and we got a couple more hours to go and we've got to stay awake so we thought, you know what better start than to answer a bunch of Q and As and how cool is it that we are doing this from an airplane. You can probably hear the engines rolling in the back. So today's questions comes from Chad and Amy and they write, “Hey S and J, it sounds like you guys work on your online business all the time.” that is true. Pretty much we do a lot of it. “What do you do when you are not ‘flipping lives' and working together in your online business? What do you each like to do for fun and fun together?” JOCELYN: Hey Chad and Amy, thank you for your question. We have actually been thinking about talking more about than we normally do and so if that's something you guys want to hear then be sure to ask us more questions about our lives. We don't mind to share with you. We actually have a lot of different interest. We do work on our online business a lot because that is a very passionate interest of both of ours. SHANE: We both actually have a lot of doing this so is kind of one of the things we do to enjoy. JOCELYN: But we also enjoy other things as well. I like to go jogging. I have a jogging partner that we train for races sometimes and that I something I really enjoy doing. I also, ironically, enjoy cooking so that sort of cancels each other out, right? SHANE: Jocelyn and I really don't do a lot of individual things together because we like different kinds of movies, different kinds of shows, all of that so we really don't do stuff like that together. I do like to play video games. I am 37 years old but I play video games. When I play video games I got a core group of guys that I play with, my brother and two of my best friends going way back from when I was a kid and just a way for us to get together. We are all busy, we got kids and we can get on there for about an hour and a half on Monday night and just kind of hang out and chill and have some fun. I also like to watch wrestling. I love professional wrestling. I like to read all the message boards and the news and the rumors. And one of my best friends who is also an online business, he is a huge wrestling fan so we talk about wrestling probably way too much during the day where we should be actually working on our online businesses. But those are some things we like to do. We both love to go to the gym. I love to lift weight. I don't run. Jocelyn tries to get me to run but I only run when I am being chased. That's what I would say. But I do love to go lift weights but I love to swim too. JOCELYN: But most of all We really enjoy working ...
In today's Q&A, we are helping Ashlyn discover if she truly needs a website or can get started without one. Do you have a question you want answered on our podcast? We would love to help you! Click here to ask your question! [Tweet "Don't get caught up on the little things, focus on the big picture."] Resources Mentioned in this Episode Today's question from Ashlyn Leadpages Let's dive into this week's question! SHANE: What's up everybody? It's time for another Q and A with S and J. Our question today comes from Ashlyn. And Ashlyn writes: I am about whether or not I should start a website immediately. I know it's possible to sell products and collect emails through lead pages but I am worried that if I don't have an email address like Ashlyn@flippedlifestyle.com, for example, my emails will get filtered as spam because I am most used likely used Gmail or something like that. What do you recommend? Okay, first we're going to talk about whether or not you need a website and then we're going to back and Jocelyn is going to talk about a little bit about how emails work and what Ashlyn is talking about here about getting our emails that she sends to her audiences getting filtered as spam. We do not recommend that you start a website at the very beginning of your online journey because you can really bogged down in getting your website correctly, learning how to use WordPress, writing content for your website, getting everything fixed just the way you want it, trying to find a logo—it can take you three, four months and all of the sudden you look up and you have been doing hours and hours of work every single week. You have been staying up late until midnight every night trying to get your website perfect and after three or four months you don't have anything to show for it. You have never made a dime, you don't have any products and your audience is not really growing and you are kind of burned out and people give up and quit. We see that happen over and over and over again. So if we were going back and starting completely from scratch with all the knowledge that we know right now, we would always started creating a digital product first and learning the processes of selling that product to people like setting up a sales page, taking payments, how do I get this thing to be automatically delivered so I don't have to sit here and email every single person that orders from me? How do I market this on social media? Can I run ads? You can do all of those things without a website. That's exactly what we teach in Flipped Your Life: How to Create a Digital Product. We go through the process of selling a digital product, creating a digital product, taking payments, automating delivery and marketing it using different channels like social media or advertising. Now, that being said, once you learned how to do that, that's going to take about a month to learn that process but you actually can sell something. You have your infrastructure built where people who find your content can buy it and give you money for it and you can create those passive income streams. At that point, a month or two end of the process, now you are going to go in and create a website where your actual products are going to live. You can start making content but those first people that get there actually now have something to buy from you. So we believe that the first month, maybe the first two months of online business should be spent totally on research, creating products and building an infrastructure for sales and marketing and then you are going to create a website where your brand is going to live and all that's going to happen like you are going to have my slip or email address, Shane@flippedlifestyle.com and all those things. JOCELYN: As far as your email goes Ashlyn, you can definitely start out just using a Gmail address or your Yahoo, whatever it is that you have. You know, it is always better to have a domain address eventually but sta...
Doc Kennedy is a filmmaker and fellow podcaster. He's loved film since he was a kid and was always enthralled with motion picture. He got started with video a few years ago through his church. In two years, he went from knowing almost nothing to being one of the directors. You can connect with him on his website and on Twitter. What does someone need for just getting started with video? Identify what you want to do Figure out if you need to hire someone or if you can do it yourself If you do it yourself, don't get so obsessed with equipment that you forget about the story you're wanting to tell. Doc likes to use Canon products (he has a Canon 60D). It does video and still pictures. Look for higher megapixels (18+) You can use your iPhone. There are competitions that solely use iPhone. If you turn the iPhone sideways, it shoots in 1080 HD. [Tweet "Don't get so obsessed with equipment that you forget about the story you're wanting to tell."] What about editing? Remember that there comes a point that good enough is good enough. Doc uses Adobe products. They have a cloud version where you can have access to the entire Adobe suite. iMovie could be used on a Mac. You could also shoot the video yourself and then hire someone to do the editing for you. Jim Woods is the co-author of Ready, Aim, Fire! and Hit the Mark! (with Erik J. Fisher). He is an accountant that is transitioning into writing full-time. You can connect with him on his website and on Twitter. Describe the process you go through when writing. Jim likes to brainstorm and get a game plan for what he's going after. If you just go on emotions, you're starting things but not going anywhere. He's starting to study about having multiple passions. If he's driving, he'll use Dragon Dictation to capture ideas. As he approaches an e-book, he looks at like a bunch of blog posts, but closely connected. Jim has tried to use Evernote, but it doesn't work well with his personality. He just e-mails the different files (audio, text, etc.) to himself, making sure to put a subject line that is descriptive. He knows that he can't handle too many projects at once, so he does one big project and one smaller project. Use what works for you. There is no one-size fits all. [Tweet "It is good to also have a physical and digital way to capture ideas. - @jimwoodswrites"] What brainstorming and research tips do you have? Research is dangerous because you can over-research. Use as few resources as possible. Steven Pressfield recommends 3 really good resources. See how the research applies to you or someone else. Tell stories. Just follow the "beginning, middle, end" format. [Tweet "Don't overthink the brainstorming idea. Don't let it stop you from starting - just dive in. - @jimwoodswrites"] How can we use goals with content creation? Jim and Erik J. Fisher co-wrote the book, "Ready, Aim, Fire!" that talks about goals. Jim recommends to buy the book, "Do the Work" by Steven Pressfield. If you're not sure of something, join the club. Doubts are common - it's just a matter if we admit it. Parting advice Creating art is a hard life. We want to be accepted, but be sure to start with yourself. Make sure you really like what you're doing, and everything else will fall into place. If you're struggling too much, it's okay to back away. Do you have any processes or tips for creating content? He shares about his show format and some of his processes. He is also one of the co-founders of the Podcast Movement. You can reach Jared on his website or on Twitter. How did Jared starve the doubts about starting Starve the Doubts? Talking about when he was getting ready to start his podcast, he got some feedback stating that "Starve the Doubts" (overcoming self-doubt) didn't sound like the best idea. Don't allow doubt to hinder you from hitting record. Listened to a bunch of podcasts, and aimed to interview the hosts.
