In this episode, Lundy Bancroft, a renowned expert on narcissism, abusive relationships, and the family court system, reveals how abusive men manipulate both their partners and the legal system to maintain control. With over 30 years of experience working with abusers and training professionals, Lundy exposes the subtle and overt tactics used by high-conflict individuals to gain power in custody disputes and other legal battles. He shares eye-opening insights from his books, Why Does He Do That? and The Batterer as Parent, highlighting the systemic failures in family courts that often work in favor of abusers, despite clear evidence of harm. Lundy explains why survivors of abuse find themselves in difficult, uphill battles when trying to protect their children and the emotional toll this takes. Lundy also provides practical advice for mothers navigating high-conflict divorces and custody disputes, outlining critical steps to level the playing field and protect children from further harm. He dives deep into the biases within the legal process that enable dangerous individuals to gain access to their children, even when their behavior is abusive. Through this conversation, Lundy offers a powerful look into how the family court system operates, how survivors can reclaim their power, and the ways in which we can push back against a broken system. This week, we had the opportunity to speak to Elissa McFarland, an intervention specialist for children with mild to moderate learning needs and Mother to two children. She loves her job. This school year will be her 13th year teaching. As a child, she received intervention services. In 3rd grade, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and later was diagnosed with ADHD. Having walked this path as a child has led her to her passion for helping students. We discuss the school system, raising children who will need support from the public school system, and available services. We talk about her journey with special education services and their path to obtaining a diagnosis for their daughter. What she provides to her students and the families she works with. Elissa has an amazing husband, Brandon, and their oldest, Aleena, is six and going into 1st grade. Their youngest daughter, Lexi, is four and starting preschool. Lexi is diagnosed with ASD, and the inspiration for my blog on Facebook is "Life with Lexi." Being a parent is not easy even though it is definitely fulfilling and rewarding. Most parents have unhealed parts of themselves that get triggered when they see those parts in their children or they want their children to fulfil an unmet need or desire they had when they were a child or they want to protect their children from all the "bad" experiences. All these considerations ultimately affect how we parent and most likely (speaking from experience) can cause one to control their children in a way that is not for their children's highest good. So what do we do instead? On this episode, I chat with Kaylaa Kayce on: Allowing our children to experience life their own way (rather than controlling what we want them to experience) Why it's important to give our children the freedom to choose Why you don't need to be “fixed” Trust the process of finding your mission in life Plus so much more!⁣ Kaylaa is an Intuitive Channel, Conscious Parenting Coach, Multidimensional Teacher, and Best-Selling Author. She works with harmonic frequencies to adjust and bring stability to the emotional energies of Hybrid and Crystal children. Her unique connection to emotional frequency acts to bridge a child's higher dimensional, intergalactic energies with their physical structure here on the Earth plane. Guided on her spiritual path by Yeshua and the Christos Collective, Kaylaa also works closely with the Yahyel, Dolphin, and Diamond Children Collectives. She vibrationally balances the heart chakra to align children with their own distinctive vibration. Her healing work correlates with the need for a new interpretation and perception that is manifesting through today's Starseed and Hybrid children. As a clear channel for truth, her words spark a deep recognition of the invitation for healing that calls to us from our divine Inner child, our true connection to self as source. Kaylaa has a Master's Degree in Education and is a licensed Intervention Specialist. For 15 years she worked as a teacher counsellor of children with severe emotional and behavioural disabilities. Incorporating her knowledge and understanding of emotional development, brain-based learning, meditation, and spirituality, Kaylaa founded Young Ascended Masters in 2021, to guide and mentor spiritually gifted youth and their parents in the movement to higher consciousness.   For more about Kaylaa Website - www.youngascendedmasters.com Facebook - www.facebook.com/kaylaa.kayce.1 Instagram - www.instagram.com/youngascendedmasters YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC_dGVNXx0_EqRuN7Lyn72TQ   Book recommendations The Awakened Feminine: Stories of women awakening to who they truly are by Ka Ki Lee, et al. What exactly is a culturally-competent teacher? How can educators promote cultural competence and identity?Dr. Erica Glover is committed to working towards equity for marginalized groups. As a coach and leader, she has developed and supported innovative strategies to recruit and hire BIPOC candidates. Erica spent 15 years working with youth, as an administrator, basketball coach, and as an Intervention Specialist. She utilizes her non-profit, OKBNU, INC., to develop educational programs for local athletes, pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers working through Project-based learning activities centered on community development and advocacy. Erica's passion for learning is captured within her research, where she explored the adolescent and professional experiences of Black teachers--and how such experiences influenced the supports provided to students. She found that Black teachers become disrupters for their students, disrupting the interruptive negative and inequitable schooling experiences. Her research has led her to create Disrupter University, an educational consultant group that is focused on disrupting teacher socialization through intercultural coaching specific to culturally-responsive and sustaining teaching practices. This on-going approach to learning about self and others is structured so that youth and adults are able to learn from each other's experiences and perspectives.Erica has vast experience in utilizing data to create measurable goals for staff accountability while supporting staff in meeting professional and organizational goals.Listen as Erica shares:- why self-awareness is important in cultural competence- the importance of cultural self-awareness- how to handle a cultural mismatch between teachers and scholars- cultivating critical consciousness in the classroom- how we are socialized from birth- systemic influences educators need to understand about scholars- how mainstream media feeds perceptions of scholars to teachers- technology and cultural awareness in the classroom- building reciprocal relationships between business and people- how to create belonging in scholars- the benefits of being a culturally competent educator...and so much more!Connect with Erica:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erica-glover-ph-d-shrm-cp-b1a4bb33/Twitter: https://twitter.com/doc_egloverInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eglover330/?hl=enAdditional Resources:'Centering Student Voice - A Guide For Cultivating Emotionally Intelligent Educators And Culturally Responsive Classrooms' by Erica Glover, Ph.D.Connect with me on:LinkedInFacebookInstagramLeave a rating and a review:iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cultural-competence-in-educators-w-dr-erica-j-glover/id1614151066?i=1000595217989Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0b3yOAD2e3O30al8hFJR8VYouTube: https://youtu.be/PGgErXkxOzM

Years later, she lived under the shadow of PTSD and depression—disguising its impact from only those who knew her best. Now on the other side of the trauma, she speaks to women who are on their own healing journeys. As an experienced Intervention Specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the education management industry, Tammy has spoken both locally and regionally to women's groups and at educational conferences. Her publications include works published by Thriving Family, The Upper Room, and Light from the Word. She is currently working on a book about PTSD from a Christian survivor's standpoint, and writes a blog. In her September 5, 2019 blog, Tammy writes, “While a caterpillar is encased within its chrysalis, its growth leads to an incredible transformation until one glorious day it emerges with a final, determined struggle .. a new creation. One day, you and I will be gloriously and completely transformed–shaped by our response to both the good and bad circumstances in our lives.” With a master's degree in teaching from Colorado College, Tammy is also skilled in nonprofit organizations, coaching, early childhood education, editing, and volunteer management. "I'm also completing certificates in both trauma and life coaching," she shares. "My passion is for others to know there is hope for healing and life beyond the emotional pain of the past."

Trevor Shevin, Intervention Specialist joins me to discuss his experience of addiction and how it led to him becoming an interventionist for those who struggled like he did.We start off hearing about his life on Wall Street where he was ultra focused on results and spent a lot of time trying to people please. We dive into his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse  that led to him being intervened on by his friends. From here, Trevor mentions his process of intervening on someone and the Johnson approach that he uses. This involves love first and not blaming and shaming the person struggling with the addiction. Included in this conversation is the discussion of alcohol and drug use from a college perspective and when someone can distinguish being young and having fun versus having a problem they need to address. If you want to learn about addiction as a whole and the broader impact it has on a persons life outside of just the substance, this is the episode for you.

The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. -- In this episode, I chat with Melinda Arnost, a witty K-12 Intervention Specialist that is always thinking outside of the box. This curly-haired educator loves everything about teaching minus the paperwork and standardized tests. Melinda has her master's degree in education, is a personal trainer for students with unique abilities, and is an autism guru. She has a passion for building relationships with her students and colleagues and can embrace inclusion in any type of setting. Melinda started an adaptive nonprofit ice skating program for individuals with unique abilities and runs marathons while pushing her pal, Annie, in a HOYT running chair. She believes people, regardless of their lack of ability, should feel included, supported and loved. Melinda lives in the woods with her husband who is an automotive enthusiast in Ohio. When she is not writing or teaching, she is busy running extreme distances, painting murals or trying to build her own secret garden During our conversation we talked about relationships. Yes, relationships. But not just between students and teachers but between teachers and interventionists. Melinda shared how many of the disconnects that we see with our diverse learners are due to the lack of communication and being on the same page. We also talked about the power of inclusion and what happens when ALL students are able to receive the tools needed to learn in the same spaces. Melinda talked about how educators fear the labels that students carry and judge them before they even enter the class and how connecting with other staff and students can help to dispel those misconceptions. And maybe … just maybe … we redefined what PD should look like. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. Episode Summary Welcome back to the Erica Diamond Podcast! Today I have a very special guest. Someone I actually met on Clubhouse, a new audio social media app I'm enjoying very much. This new app is so intimate, it lets us get so close to someone, that you feel like you're literally sitting next to them. I stumbled in a room recently on Clubhouse, and there I heard Cheryl Rich. I heard her share her life's story and tears were literally streaming down my face. Cheryl was pregnant at 11 years old. At 18 years old, her only child, Eric, was killed in a car accident. After a treacherous journey through drug addiction, prison and “self-induced-hell,” Cheryl rose from the ashes with brutal courage and fierce determination to overcome some of life's most mind-shattering tragedies. I felt her pain as she spoke, and yet I felt her resilience and her triumph and her power.  I reached out to her and asked her if she would share her story with you-- our beloved listeners. Well, I'm so grateful she said yes. Enjoy our very candid, and very intimate and raw interview. In This Episode  Take me back to your childhood. To understand how far you've come is to share where you began. Cheryl, pregnant at 11. I can only imagine the fear in discovering this news. Cheryl, can you share with us about your son Eric, who passed away in a car accident? How did you find the inner strength to make it through those difficult times of addiction, incarceration, and the loss of Eric? What was the mental shift in your mind that had to take place for you to go from victim to thriving survivor. Talk to me about the role of forgiveness as part of your recovery. Are there teachable moments here, because I imagine there are? If so, what would they be? For someone listening going through a very difficult time, what advice or wisdom could you share with them Tell me about your book that you're writing. What would u tell your younger self? "These tests are just a snapshot of one day, of one way, of how they're doing on a certain test... The tests did not do what the tests were supposed to do."Featured guest: Jane Mitchell, retired teacherAfter a 40 year career, Jane Mitchell retired as an intervention specialist from Dublin City Schools in 2013. She got her Bachelor's degree in Social Studies and English Education from the University of Illinois in 1973, then pursued her first Master's from the University of Iowa in K-12 Developmental Reading, but since she was already working with so many children with special needs at that point, she went for another Master's in Learning and Emotional Disabilities from the University of Iowa. In the years since, she has earned over a hundred credits from various universities to further her professional development. Mitchell has taught all grades from preschool through college in five different states, almost exclusively serving students with special needs. She spent the last 25 years of her career in Dublin Schools, serving as the testing coordinator at two different elementary schools in that time. She is a proud grandmother to five and mother to three. Two of her daughters are teachers; the third is the host of this podcast.  In this episode:"Twice, I had kids get bloody noses on the tests and once, I had a kid throw up on the test. And when that happens, you have to stop testing because no one is going to be a good job while somebody is cleaning up barf, so the kids all have to take their break at that time while you clean up, but then the teacher, or in my case the testing coordinator because the teachers were so grossed out… would have to wear gloves and rewrite everything into a new test booklet, including all of the mistakes with spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and have it exactly the same—the only thing that's better is the handwriting—and bag [the soiled test] up and mark it as hazardous waste and send it in along with the test that's getting scored." 1:30 - From childhood dreams of becoming a nun to four decades in the public school classroom teaching students with special needs 3:25 - The duties of a testing coordinator and how she got roped into the responsibilities 5:00 - Lost tests, bloody noses, and barf, oh my! 6:20 - Dealing with a pants wetting incident, leaked test prompts, and language barriers 9:20 - Saving the tests from a plumbing disaster 10:45 - The evolution of standardized testing over the years and the move to punitive measures 13:40 - The failure to effectively define achievement in school or to level out the playing field for all children 15:10 - Thoughts on standardized testing during the pandemic 16:30 - Formative vs. summative assessments summed up in a Great British Baking Show explanation (Credit for this metaphor goes to OEA Education Reform Consultant Ellen Adornetto) 17:35 - Trusting educators as professionals to meet their students academic, social, and emotional needs... and voting for the other guy 18:10 - "Why do we pray to Cheez-its?" 19:00 - Trying to teach a previously non-verbal student to stop using a certain word "It was so obvious that whoever came up with the stupid laws about testing had no idea what the tests do. The purpose was supposed to show us where the kids were lacking and needed help and needed more instruction, but you never even got that information until the kids had already gone onto the next grade and that information rarely followed them, other than their scores. The parents would get a score but wouldn't tell them 'he's having difficulty in algebraic thinking' or 'he's having difficulty with using a lot of adjectives in his writing' or whatever. It would never give you that kind of information. It would say proficient, not proficient, advanced; and so you suffered." Connect with us: Email educationmatters@ohea.org with your feedback or ideas for future Education Matters topics Like OEA on Facebook Follow OEA on Twitter Follow OEA on Instagram Get the latest news and statements from OEA here Learn more about where OEA stands on the issues  Keep up to date on the legislation affecting Ohio public schools and educators with OEA's Legislative Watch About us: The Ohio Education Association represents more than 120,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals who work in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities to help improve public education and the lives of Ohio's children. In episode 3 of This is Altadena, Altadena Library staffer Chloé Cavelier talks with Steven Sneed, a local filmmaker, musician, designer, and overall mover and shaker in our communities, doing important work around gang violence prevention and creating new opportunities for at-risk youth. Throughout the early 2000s, Steve worked as a Behavior and Youth Specialist in the Pasadena Unified School District with students in elementary to high school. In 2016, he became the district-wide Intervention Specialist, creating support plans for at-risk students and developing mentorship opportunities for students, conflict resolution training for District staff, and gang prevention education to middle and high school students. In 2017 when he was laid off due to budget cuts, Steve continued his journey to give back to his community by joining the Violence Prevention Planning Committee for the City of Pasadena, which ultimately inspired him to direct a film about gang violence in Pasadena. Published in 2020, the purpose of his film was to create awareness, bring people together, spark an open dialog, hear different perspectives, and explore solutions to reduce gang violence. During the conception of the documentary, Mr. Sneed collaborated with childhood friend Jason Hardin in the expansion of the Pasadena-based apparel company "Made In Dena," the fruits of which can be seen on sweatshirts and apparel across our communities. For more on all the cool things that Steven is up to, visit his website: https://www.sclaz.com Steven's film "Pasadena: Exploring Solutions To Reduce Gang Violence" can be streamed in its entirety on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPc7Uv2WhL4 Subscribe to This Is Altadena at any and all of the places you get podcasts including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

ON THIS EPISODEMelinda Arnost is a K-3 Intervention Specialist who works in an autism unit in a  public school in Ohio.  Currently, she is embracing inclusion throughout her school by providing students with whole group social-emotional lessons in the general education classrooms.  Data has shown all students are benefiting from these impactful lessons. The negative behaviors are decreasing while kindness, inclusivity and compassion are increasing!  Students with unique abilities are staying the general education classrooms longer, mastering their goals, and are truly included in their classrooms.  Due to this success, Melinda is publishing a book next month called, "Empowering Inclusion, The Tool Teachers Need to Help All Students Succeed" which is a guide for teachers to build relationships and push for an inclusive environment. Inclusion is much more than just having students that may appear different occupying a seat in the general education classroom.  When Melinda is not teaching or writing, she is found running extreme distances (over a marathon!), painting murals on walls or playing in her garden.  REFERENCESFind Melinda Melinda's FREE monthly inclusive tips when you provide your email through this addresshttps://mailchi.mp/8ddec8915930/empoweringinclusiontoolboxAnd you'll be notified when Melinda's book is available on Amazon! As an Intervention Specialist at a suburban Atlanta High School, Joy Crowe taught special education for 37 years. Furthermore, she specialized in working with students with emotional and behavior disorders.  In this episode, Joy reflects on losing two of her three sons to a drug overdose and nearly losing her third son to COVID-19. We discuss the shame associated with addiction and how Joy is getting through each day in light of unbelievable loss. Finally, learn how Joy came to realize that she couldn’t “fix” her children, She could only fix herself.   Highlights: Joy shares her story and how her oldest son Brenden, passed away from a drug overdose on 28 September 2011. Also, Joy lost her second son Alex, to an overdose on 25 February 2020. Furthermore, we talk about the risk factors for addiction such as being gifted, diagnosed with ADHD, and seeking an adrenaline rush.  Joy describes the day she learned her oldest son, Brenden, was using drugs.  The juvenile justice system is overloaded with children with mental health issues.  Joy was able to get Brenden into a long term rehabilitative program.  Next, Joy describes what happened when Brenden returned home from the program.  Joy shares all she did to try to help her son.  Ultimately, she learned how to set boundaries. You love your child but not the addict. Also, the other children in the family suffer because the focus tends to be on the addict. Unfortunately, Brenden relapsed and Joy got the call she never wanted to get. Next Joy describes her life after Brenden’s funeral.  She felt shame around child dying from a drug overdose.  Also, Joy felt like an outsider and like people thought it was her fault. Furthermore, it took Joy 4 years to detach from the idea that Brenden’s death was her fault.  She can't take on the whole responsibility of Brenden becoming an addict and she won't be ashamed of it anymore. Also, she joined a local organization of moms called Warrior Moms.  This tight knit group helps other parents and advocates for legislative changes.   Next Joy talks about her son, Alex, and shares his story.  Alex started drinking at an early age and he silently became addicted to oxy. Joy never saw Alex’s death coming.   It’s especially hard to grieve during COVID. Depression and isolation sink in even worse during COVID. Joy gets by day by day. All of the important emotional-social standards should be taught to ALL school children, not just the uniquely-abled kids.  Communication and collaboration in the classroom is a win for the teachers and a win for the students. Melinda has a passion to share what she’s learned with other teachers. Building relationships and accepting people for who they are is critical. Melinda details the book she is writing, Empowering Inclusion, and what it will offer teachers. Just because teachers are told what they’re supposed to do for their students, they don’t always know how to do it or why they’re doing it, and Melinda’s book will help educate, entertain, and inspire them.   Connect with Melinda! Tonight's special guest is Tammy Kennington from Colorado Springs, Colorado, a survivor of a decade of childhood sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and domestic violence at the hands of her alcoholic stepfather.

Kalyn is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s degree in Social Work form the University of Washington in Seattle WA in 2003. She has a background of working with youth and their families as an Intervention Specialist, serving as a Clinician and an Assistant Dean at a boarding school for high risk youth, and as a Professor of Social Work at Longwood University. She currently works as a School Social Worker in three schools in the Chesterfield Co. Public School system and as an Adjunct Professor at Longwood University.  I'm so grateful she came on the show to talk about this important subject to teach us how to talk about hard topics. As parents, it can be scary when our kids bring up these tough subjects! How do we address their concerns? When we have an open attitude about difficult subjects then our kids feel safe to bring up important topics. I brought up my concern with bringing up body image with my young daughter. I sometimes fear that if I talk about body image itself then she will start to feel concerned about it. Kalyn advised me that if I am just open to talking about my body in a healthy way then when my daughter is ready or has concerns about her body image then she knows she can bring it up with me. I can see how this would translate to other concerns, such as sexual health, relationships, faith, mental health, or other important subjects. If we are willing to talk about them openly then our kids will let us know when they are ready to take the discussion deeper as they encounter challenges. Kalyn brought up the analogy of an emotional pendulum. Let's say this pendulum swings equally in both directions. On one side is emotions we interpret as uncomfortable, and on the other side are emotions we label as pleasurable. When we encounter the uncomfortable, we tend to put up blocks to keep ourselves from having those feelings again. What we don't realize is that by stopping the pendulum on one side, we are keeping it from swinging all the way up on the other side, too! We may not feel those hurtful feelings anymore, but we are also keeping ourselves from feeling the joyful once, too! As parents, it's important that we address our own blocks that are keeping us from embracing those uncomfortable feelings. We may be triggered by our kids' big emotions! Young children allow their pendulum to swing both ways to their extremes! Because we have our own blocks from our past we sometimes react by not allowing our kids space to manage those feelings. Parents can do their own inner work of breaking down their blocks to allow us all to live for the future! Pain is an inevitable part of life. But, life is full of both highs and lows! When we label our uncomfortable feelings as bad, we often attribute shame to feeling bad. As parents, we create a space for our kids to feel safe by our actions and making ourselves open to communication. We create this environment by letting go of our own baggage, and allowing our children to express their own feelings without making it about us. Parents also need to be consistent to model behaviors that will help our kids see that we are coping with our stress and emotional baggage. We can't just say that we need to exercise as a way to release stress, or model good behaviors, it needs to become part of our routines. We hear a lot from parent educators about the importance of teaching kids to be "resilient." The "How?" part of the equation isn't always clear to us or to our kids. Too often teens (and adults) let a setback sink them into despair. Life coach Chester Hall tells the teens he works with "Even when you feel at the very bottom, and [you think] nothing can get worse, it's really hard to mess this [life] up. Even if you make some huge mistakes, there is always time to bounce back." Annie talks with Chester about helping young people get back up after a setback and continue moving forward. About Chester Hall (@AG00dLife) Chester is the Owner and Lead Life Coach of Good Life Coaching. He has 14+ years experience in the education field, as a classroom teacher and serving as a Prevention & Intervention Specialist for Accomack County Public Schools (Virginia). Chester focuses his efforts on anti-bullying, character education, encouraging positive student-to-teacher relationships, mentoring at-risk youth, truancy prevention, and threat assessment. WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS RADIO WITH HOST TONY GAMBONE AND GUEST ALISON KERO & JUDY MACNAMEE: Alison Kero grew up with 2 different organizational styles being modeled to her. One parent was precision neat while the other was a pack rat. Through her teenage and college years Alison lived more like her pack rat parent but when she became an adult and started living on her own, she searched for ways to easily get and stay organized. When Alison became an organizer in 2004, she constantly searched for ways to make her clients lives and her own, easier through organization. However, minor amounts of clutter always tended to creep up in Alison's life, which she found frustrating and kind of exhausting. Finally Alison had a major "ah-ha Oprah moment" after reading a book about tidying up. She realized that using self love as her decision making tool she could create her best possible living space filled only with what she liked, used and needed. Judy MacNamee, a former Intervention Specialist, has over 17 years of working with students struggling with disabilities. She earned both a B.S. and M.B.A from Ashland University and an M.S. degree in Education from Illinois State University. Earning the “Master Teacher” designation in the State of Ohio, Judy has implemented multiple strategies, programs and interventions that have paved the way for children’s successes. She served on multiple committees within the District and was the first Special Needs teacher in her district in 2010-2011 to be selected by her peers as Teacher of the Year. Judy has been featured on Daytime Columbus and in CityScene Magazine and her SAILS of STRENGTH Coaching process highlighted in national press releases. She provides speaking engagements around the state and has hosted numerous online webinars and a national Telesummit.
