Corrosion control is fundamental to the success of any water treatment program, but how often do we question the limitations of the tools we rely on? In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcomes back returning guest Mike Standish, Vice President of Water Additives at MFG Chemical, to explore the evolving role of maleic acid-based corrosion inhibitors in industrial water treatment. Drawing on decades of expertise, Mike shares practical insights into when — and when not — to use these innovative solutions to meet today's complex challenges. Understanding the Corrosion Control Toolbox Mike Standish opens the conversation by reframing corrosion control strategies through the lens of a toolbox analogy. With limited primary approaches — from phosphate-based to organic and metal-based chemistries — the success of corrosion management depends on matching the right tool to the right application. Mike stresses the importance of avoiding overcomplication and focusing on the fundamental chemical pathways for mild steel protection. Organic vs. Inorganic Approaches The discussion turns to the critical differences between organic and inorganic inhibitors. While inorganic phosphates remain cost-effective mainstays, organic phosphonates, including maleic acid-derived materials, offer advantages in high pH, high hardness, and oxidizing environments. Mike emphasizes that “organic” in water treatment bears no relation to natural or sustainable products, a frequent misconception among newcomers to the industry. Why Maleic Acid-Based Inhibitors Matter Maleic acid phosphonates distinguish themselves with exceptional oxidant stability, a feature increasingly necessary as continuous halogenation becomes standard practice. Mike explains the chemistry behind maleic acid derivatives and how the ability to tailor molecular structures creates flexibility for specific field conditions — such as scaling tendencies, pH control, and calcium carbonate formation risks. Best Practices for Application and Measurement Field success with maleic acid-based inhibitors hinges on proper dosage and testing. Mike shares lessons from real-world trials, emphasizing that underfeeding is a common mistake that compromises corrosion rates. Accurate differentiation between orthophosphate and phosphonate concentrations is vital for precise monitoring, and bench testing must closely simulate real-world surface-to-volume ratios to yield reliable predictions. The Future of Corrosion Control In a forward-looking discussion, Mike predicts that industry consolidation will trigger a second wave of entrepreneurial water treatment companies. His vision underscores the ongoing need for technical excellence, adaptability, and innovation in corrosion management practices as the industry evolves. This episode challenges water treatment professionals to rethink their corrosion strategies with a sharper, more informed approach. Maleic acid-based inhibitors are not a universal solution, but when applied thoughtfully, they offer powerful advantages for specific operational demands. "Scaling is like debt—it's always better to prevent it than to clean it up later." Phosphate plays a crucial role in Industrial Water Treatment, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood chemicals. In this Pinks and Blues episode, Trace Blackmore revisits phosphate chemistry and its application in cooling systems, corrosion prevention, and scale inhibition. Breaking Down Phosphate Chemistry Phosphate exists in different forms, each with specific applications in water treatment. Orthophosphate (PO4³⁻): The simplest and most reactive form, used for corrosion inhibition. Polyphosphate: A longer chain of phosphate molecules that can hydrolyze into orthophosphate. Organic Phosphates: Phosphate compounds bonded with organic molecules, often used in scale inhibition. Total Phosphate: A combination of all phosphate types in a system. Phosphate Testing – What Every Water Pro Should Know Phosphate levels must be carefully monitored to maintain system integrity. Trace explains: Why the orthophosphate test is the most reliable for phosphate analysis. How to convert different phosphate forms to orthophosphate for testing. The difference between the Molybdate Vanadate Method (yellow test) and the Ascorbic Acid Method (blue test). The importance of accurate dilution and testing procedures to prevent measurement errors. Challenges and Considerations in Phosphate Treatment Biological Growth: Phosphate serves as a nutrient, promoting microbial growth if not controlled properly. Environmental Regulations: Certain facilities may have phosphate discharge limits. Calcium Phosphate Scaling: High temperatures and improper phosphate dosages can cause severe scaling issues. Best Practices for Phosphate Management Monitor carbon and alkalinity levels to determine the best phosphate formulation. Use stability indices (e.g., Ryzner Stability Index, Langelier Saturation Index) to predict scale formation. Adjust treatment strategies based on pH levels and system conditions to avoid unintended scale buildup. Always verify environmental discharge limits when using phosphate-based treatments. Mastering phosphate chemistry and testing techniques ensures better system performance, cost efficiency, and regulatory compliance. You may want to press fast forward on your imagination just a little, but as you watch the water, you see the water level dropping ever so slowly as water evaporates away or is being blown down from the system. At some point, you notice makeup water starts flowing into the basin. My question for you is what control scheme caused this to happen? Have you ever put much thought into all these ways makeup water is controlled in a cooling tower system? Is there a float mechanism? Perhaps probes of some sort? Or is there an ultrasonic device? Are there others? Also, is the makeup valve mechanically opened or electronically opened? What are the pros and cons of each option? What if there is foaming in the cooling tower basin? Would any of these control schemes be impacted? What are all the way these makeup control schemes could fail? Could they fail so too much makeup water was added? Could they fail so too little makeup water was added? Who would have thought there was so much to think about on just the makeup water control to a cooling tower system? By highlighting cost savings, clients can see how efficient water treatment impacts their bottom line. Sustainability isn't just a trendy term—it's about implementing practical practices that protect our planet for current and future generations. By adopting sustainable strategies, we can conserve resources, cut costs, and create lasting benefits for both the environment and our client's businesses. In our latest episode of the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with James Courtney, CWT, LEED AP of CSC Technologies an advocate for water sustainability, who shared actionable insights on how water professionals can effectively embrace sustainability while adding value to their clients. Meet James Courtney: A Champion for Sustainability In our enlightening conversation, James shared his journey in the water industry and emphasized the vital role that water professionals play in promoting sustainability. He stated, "We help our customers by saving them money on water, electricity, and fuel." This highlights how our work not only benefits the environment but also leads to significant financial savings for our clients. Sustainability: More Than Just a Buzzword Sustainability means optimizing our resources. As James noted, "We operate in this space where we are directly responsible for the sustainability of our customers.” Water treaters have a unique opportunity to minimize their clients' carbon footprints while improving efficiency. Whether it's running boilers without scale, optimizing cooling towers, or maximizing cycles of conductivity, every action contributes to a greener future. James also cautioned against greenwashing, reminding us that not all practices labeled as "green" deliver real benefits. We must be vigilant and ensure that our sustainability efforts Educating and Empowering Clients Understanding water and energy usage is essential for effective water management. James encourages water professionals to educate their clients about their consumption patterns. “Clients often don't realize that overusing chemicals or wasting water is a problem,” he explained. By illustrating the cost savings—like reducing their electricity bills or fuel costs—clients can connect the dots between efficient water treatment and their bottom line. Harnessing Data One of James's most compelling stories was about using smart meters to identify inefficiencies. He shared, “Meters give you information; information gives you the opportunity to find solutions to problems you didn't even know you had.” In one instance, a client's building was using half a million gallons of water due to a blocked condensate receiver. The installation of a meter enabled the team to identify the issue and prevent unnecessary water loss, ultimately leading to significant cost savings for the client. James's team also tackled a fascinating case with two identical LEED Platinum buildings. Even though they were built exactly the same, one consumed significantly more power. By analyzing minute-by-minute energy data, they pinpointed the problem, leading to solutions that not only enhanced efficiency but also inspired other buildings in the community to adopt similar practices. The Impact of Visibility James highlighted an intriguing study involving a housing development where identical homes were built. In half of these homes, energy meters were placed indoors, allowing residents to see their energy usage, while the other half had meters located outdoors. The results were striking: “The houses with visible indoor meters used less energy simply because people could see it,” James explained. Residents began to turn energy monitoring into a game, challenging themselves to reduce their consumption. This simple shift towards visibility in daily energy use not only heightened awareness among residents but also nurtured a culture of energy-saving habits. As James aptly put it, “What gets measured gets managed.” Engaging clients in enjoyable and measurable ways can significantly drive sustainability efforts. Final Thoughts James's insights remind us of the significant role water professionals play in fostering a sustainable future. By leveraging data and educating our clients, we can create meaningful change that benefits both our communities and the environment. Together, let's continue to explore the importance of sustainability practices that protect our generation and the ones to come. Thank you for being part of the Scaling UP! H2O community. There are a few trains of thought on control ranges. Which tests and readings really need a control range applied to them? How wide or narrow should the control range be? It's something one should consider carefully. I have seen control ranges applied to every test parameter for a makeup, such as city water, that the user had absolutely no control over. Are these control ranges really necessary? Sometimes, they are, especially if the makeup source is susceptible to changes in water quality, such as total hardness, which can impact downstream softener performance. I've also seen control ranges so large a bus could slide through them sideways. What good is such a wide control range doing for the water system? Nothing was actually being controlled. I've seen control ranges that were so unreasonably narrow that the parameters were almost ALWAYS out of range as well. What good does that serve? Is a better control system needed to meet these narrow ranges or is a wider control range more fitting instead? A lot of you out there use field service report programs that turn red, green, and sometimes yellow when a parameter is outside the control range. Not having good and proper control ranges can make that field service report's color coding nearly useless because it is always too red or even too green and not actually reflecting the true stressed or controlled state of the system. Control ranges that are too tight may yield field service reports that are red all the time, which will lead to either the end user ignoring the colors or being annoyed by the report always looking red. Control ranges that are too broad may not show the true state of stress the system is under and lead to more problems down the road. Lastly, I've even seen reps be pressured by their customers to avoid red color coding as much as possible, leading to either uselessly wide control ranges or no control ranges at all. This can be a touchy subject, but your control ranges must be meaningful and useful. It may take some finesse to get everyone on the same side of the table on this but seeing a little red when appropriate TODAY beats dealing with the impact of a failed water system and wasted energy and water TOMORROW. How Veolia Prioritizes Health and Safety Worldwide? At Veolia, safety isn't just a requirement—it's embedded in the company's core values. Leading the charge is Arnaud Valleteau de Moulliac, Chief Executive Officer of Veolia Water Technologies. In this week's episode, Arnaud speaks with Scaling UP! H2O host Trace Blackmore about how safety initiatives are reshaping Veolia's culture around the world. Arnaud emphasizes that health and safety are non-negotiable: "It's a 24/7 commitment." This episode takes you inside Veolia's global approach, showing how the company's 8,000+ employees have integrated safety into their daily routines. What Drives Veolia's Health and Safety Initiatives? For Arnaud, safety comes from a personal place: “As a father of four, ensuring everyone gets home safely is paramount.” This family-first approach reflects Veolia's deep commitment to safety, which has been an ongoing focus for over a decade. “Ten years ago, we launched International Health and Safety Week, where every subsidiary worldwide participates in focused discussions and actions on safety.” This annual event creates a space for employees to assess their work environments, recognize potential risks, and form long-lasting safety habits. But at Veolia, safety isn't just about one week—it's about creating a culture that endures year-round. Fostering a Culture of Safety Every Day While International Health and Safety Week serves as a focal point, Veolia's goal is to make safety a daily priority. “We need to ensure that health and safety are part of our everyday routines, not just something we think about once a year,” Arnaud notes. To keep safety top of mind, managers at Veolia conduct at least six field visits each year, evaluating safety practices and identifying areas for improvement. Employees are encouraged to report near-misses and incidents, creating a culture were speaking up about safety is valued. “It's about creating an environment where people feel safe to voice concerns without fear of judgment,” Arnaud says. “Building trust is essential.” A Cultural Shift: Breaking Old Safety Norms One of Veolia's biggest achievements over the last decade has been a shift in how employees view safety. Arnaud recalls a time when raising safety concerns was often seen as a sign of weakness. Today, those conversations are welcomed and encouraged. “There used to be this mentality of being a 'superman'—toughing it out in unsafe conditions. That's behind us now, but we always stay cautious. The human element means we can never stop paying attention to safety,” Arnaud warns. This shift has been a significant victory for Veolia, but the work isn't finished. The company remains vigilant, continually adapting its safety approach to address both evolving risks and human factors. Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Safety Transformation As Veolia marks the 10th anniversary of International Health and Safety Week, Arnaud reflects on the company's progress. One key success has been the reduction in workplace accidents and the increasing willingness of employees to report safety risks. “Ten years ago, speaking up about safety could be seen as a weakness,” Arnaud explains. “Today, it's a sign of strength and responsibility.” This cultural change has transformed how employees view safety—not as a policy, but as a core value that protects their colleagues and ensures everyone returns home safely. Starting a Safety Culture: Insights for Small Teams For small businesses, building a safety culture might seem overwhelming. However, as Arnaud explains, it's not about financial investment—it's about leadership and intention. “Safety starts at the top. Being an exemplary leader doesn't cost anything. It's about creating policies and following through. Take time to sit with your team and ask, ‘What are the risks?' It's an investment in people, not just resources. Any company, no matter its size, can do this,” Arnaud emphasizes. Manager Visits: Fresh Eyes on the Ground As part of Veolia's commitment to safety, manager site visits provide an opportunity for leadership to spot issues that might have become invisible to regular operators. These visits aren't just procedural—they're a chance to bring fresh perspectives into the conversation. “Even non-operational colleagues—those from HR or finance—ask valuable questions during these visits. Their common sense often uncovers risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. Safety is about asking the right questions, not about being an expert,” Arnaud explains. One Key Takeaway: Lead by Example If there's one message Arnaud wants listeners to take away, it's this: “Be exemplary. It starts with you.” Veolia's success in transforming its safety culture is a powerful reminder that leadership and continuous vigilance are the best tools for creating a safe working environment, no matter the size of the operation. Stay Informed and Stay Safe! As Veolia's journey shows, building a culture of health and safety requires effort, commitment, and teamwork. Whether you are part of a large organization or a small team, Arnaud Valleteau de Moulliac's insights offer valuable lessons for promoting safety in any workplace. H2O Academy video courses AWT (Association of Water Technologies) Drop By Drop with James In today's episode, I have a “what if” for you. What if the temperature of the softener regeneration water drops in the wintertime? Now, if you're in an area with a warmer climate year-round, you may not have to worry about this, but for those who live in colder climates, it is something to consider. How could colder water temperatures cause an issue with softener regeneration? Have you ever considered this before? The answer is that water is denser at cooler temperatures. This could be especially important during the backwash step of the softener regeneration. A proper backwash is necessary to ensure efficient softener operation. It loosens the bed, minimizes pressure drop, cleans and classifies the resin, and maintains an even water flow across the cross-sectional area of the resin bed. Backwash flow rates must be high enough to expand the bed by 50% and typically last around 10 minutes or more. If the water is denser because it is colder, the same flow rate used in the warmer months can result in expanding the resin bed even MORE, which could ultimately lead to washing good resin down the drain. Resin manufacturers often have tables that show the required flow rate based upon water temperature. A big picture look at these tables roughly shows that, in Fahrenheit, when the temperature drops to half what it was in the summer months, the required flow rate could drop to half as well. Be sure to always refer to the resin manufacturer's specifications for actual design numbers, though. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Meet the Women Behind the WOW Committee This episode features insights from six trailblazing women who are not only leaders in their respective fields but also passionate advocates for the WOW mission: Stephanie Choury, Enterprise Account Manager at Buckman Digital Water Tammy Faber Sales Director of HOH Water Technology and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Paule Genest, Director of Sales and ESG, Water and Energy at TGWT Clean Technologies, Host of the Paule-Cast and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Michelle Lunn, Marketing Director of GLA Water Consultants & Director on the AWT Board Janice Shawl, President of AMSA, Inc. a specialty chemical manufacturing company Pam Simmons, National OEM Sales Manager, Watson Marlow What is Women of Water? WOW exists to welcome, highlight, and celebrate the contributions of women in AWT. Paule Genest articulates the mission clearly: “To encourage all the women working and thriving within the industry of water technologies to come forward and contribute their time and talents to the greater good.” WOW focuses on creating a thriving community where women can belong, elevate, and positively impact AWT. Mission of the WOW Committee The mission of the WOW Committee is clear: to promote the professional development and advancement of women in the water treatment industry. By providing education, networking opportunities, and a strong support system, the committee aims to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where all members can succeed. This mission not only benefits women but also strengthens the industry as a whole by encouraging fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Facing Challenges Head-On In every industry, women encounter unique challenges, and the water treatment sector is no exception. Pam Simmons, a dedicated member of the Women of Water (WOW) committee, sheds light on the obstacles women face and how the committee is striving to address them. Pam begins by acknowledging a reality that many women are all too familiar with the gender pay gap. According to the International Labor Organization, women globally earn about 20% less than men. This disparity is not just a number; it's a barrier that women must navigate throughout their careers. But the pay gap is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. There is also the issue of unequal opportunities, particularly in leadership. A 2022 report from Deloitte on women in the boardroom highlights that only 19% of boardroom positions are held by women. This underrepresentation speaks volumes about the challenges women face in advancing to leadership roles. For many women, the journey to the top is not just about breaking the glass ceiling; it's about finding the ladder to reach it in the first place. Career gaps present another significant hurdle. Whether its time taken off to have a baby or care for a family member, these interruptions can create substantial obstacles when women return to the workforce. Pam points out that these gaps can make it difficult for women to regain their footing and continue progressing in their careers. The struggle doesn't stop there. Navigating work-life balance is another challenge that resonates with everyone, regardless of gender, but it affects women in distinct ways. Pam reflects on how this delicate balance—or lack thereof—can leave a lasting impact on both personal and professional lives. The WOW committee is not just identifying these challenges—they are actively working to address them. Pam shares that WOW is committed to introducing resources and strategies to help women cope with these challenges. Through support, education, and community, WOW aims to empower women in the water treatment industry to not just survive but thrive. How is WOW Helping Women in the Water Industry? The WOW Committee is already making a significant impact. There are now three women on AWT's Board of Directors, the most ever in the organization's history. Stephanie Choury has seen firsthand how the inclusion of women has led to greater collaboration and innovation within the industry. She notes that the women on the Board feel they have a “seat at the table” and are making meaningful contributions alongside their male colleagues. WOW is also instrumental in providing mentorship and creating spaces for women to grow their knowledge, skills, and leadership roles. The Power of Mentorship Mentorship is central to the Women of Water (WOW) committee's mission, acting as a crucial tool for professional growth and community building. As the industry evolves, mentorship plays a key role in creating pathways for women in water treatment. Tammy Faber emphasizes the importance of mentorship, referencing Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg highlights that a mentor or sponsor can significantly boost career progression, yet women often lack such support. WOW addresses this gap by connecting seasoned professionals with newcomers. Tammy explains, “It's not just about an older professional helping a younger one; it's about leaning in and helping one another grow.” WOW has prioritized mentorship this year, especially with young professionals. Both mentors and mentees experience mutual growth, as Tammy shares: “The mentor-mentee relationship is so important because I can walk in a room and already know five people that maybe I only saw at technical training in March, but yet we've connected through text and email along the way. It feels like family and a safe place.” This focus on mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and a supportive network. Tammy notes, “We're a group that wants one another to succeed, and that's the power of mentor and mentee relationships.” These connections offer members a trusted group for advice and support, reinforcing that within WOW, no one stands alone. Empowering Connections: Key Takeaways from WOW's Leadership As we wrap up this insightful episode with the Women of Water (WOW) committee, our guests share powerful messages about empowerment, mentorship, and community. Michelle Lunn's closing thoughts are a beacon of encouragement: whether you're new to the industry or a seasoned professional, reaching out and connecting is crucial. Her message is clear—every woman in the industry belongs and has the potential to achieve great things. So, at the next convention or industry event, don't hesitate to introduce yourself and make connections. You have the power to excel and belong. Pam Simmons adds a call for self-awareness and openness to addressing subconscious biases in our interactions. She encourages all professionals to be mindful of how these biases might influence relationships and conversations. This self-reflection is essential for fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Tammy Faber challenges seasoned professionals to reach out to those who may seem hesitant or reserved. By engaging with someone who might be standing on the sidelines, you can make a significant impact. Invite them for a coffee, introduce yourself, and help them feel welcome. This simple act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone new in the room. Janice Shawl reminds us that women are a vibrant and integral part of the water treatment industry. Her message celebrates the contributions of women and underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing their presence in the field. Stephanie Choury underscores the immense value of mentorship. Whether at an industry event or in everyday interactions, extending a helping hand to others can be incredibly rewarding. She emphasizes that mentorship is a two-way street and encourages everyone to be both mentors and mentees. By fostering these relationships, we can all contribute to a supportive and thriving professional community. Paule Genest reinforces the core message of WOW: we belong, we elevate, and we are WOW. She urges everyone to help others recognize their worth and potential, creating a positive impact both within and beyond the industry. As we look at the current statistics—only 10% of surveyed AWT members are women, and a similar percentage represents women in industrial water treatment nationally—there is a clear need for continued effort. In 2024, 40% of our Scaling UP! H2O podcast guests have been women, reflecting progress and the importance of representation. Our challenge to you, Scaling UP! Nation is to connect with the remarkable women you heard from in this episode. Together, we can empower women in the best industry in the world to make a lasting impact on the water treatment industry and build a thriving, inclusive community. Hello Scaling UP! Nation, August is Legionella Awareness Month, and we're excited to bring you in-depth insights on this crucial topic. Usually, we bring you four episodes every August, but this year, you're in luck! With five Fridays this month, we have five episodes packed with valuable information for you. Today, podcast host Trace Blackmore, CWT, is here to answer your pressing questions about Legionella. As industrial water treaters, you are the heroes in the fight against Legionella, protecting your communities and clients against this dangerous bacteria. Scaling up your Legionella knowledge is a great way to celebrate Legionella Awareness Month, and to support you, we've created a free Legionella resources page at www.ScalingUpH2o.com/Legionella Understanding Legionella: Common Questions Answered What is the difference between Legionella and Legionnaires' disease? Legionella is a bacteria responsible for Legionnaires' disease, a type of pneumonia that comes from getting ill after being exposed to Legionella. It thrives in water and poses significant health risks. Legionnaires' disease was discovered in the mid 1970's after several attendees of the American Legion convention got sick after attending the convention. How does a person get Legionnaires' disease? Inhaling water contaminated with Legionella bacteria can lead to infection. What are the symptoms of Pontiac Fever or Legionnaires' disease? Early symptoms mimic the flu, but more severe pneumonia-like symptoms can develop. Look out for high fever, cough, difficulty breathing, chills, and diarrhea. How common is Legionnaires' disease? Per the CDC, in 2015 there were approximately 6,000 cases reported in the United States. Who is at higher risk for developing Legionnaires' disease? While most people have resistance, fewer than 5 in 100 exposed individuals may develop the disease. High-risk groups include older adults, smokers, and those with weakened immune systems. How does Legionella enter buildings? Legionella enters through a building's makeup water. This is why we need to test the water coming into a building's system and also set up a program to test within the system so we know what to do and respond appropriately if a test comes back positive for Legionella bacteria. What promotes Legionella growth? Biofilm, temperature fluctuations, inadequate disinfectant levels, and water stagnation within building water systems can promote Legionella growth What are Water Management Programs (WMPs)? WMPs are designed to identify hazardous conditions and minimize the growth and spread of waterborne pathogens, including Legionella, in building water systems. How Should I Discuss Legionella Testing Frequency with a Client Who Only Wants to Test Once a Year? When discussing Legionella testing with a client who only wants to test once a year, emphasize the importance of more frequent testing for safety and compliance. Here's how to approach the conversation: Encourage Regular Testing: I always encourage people to test for Legionella at least every season or quarter. Regular testing helps identify potential issues early, ensuring the safety of your water system. Refer to the Water Management Plan (WMP): It's crucial to refer back to your Water Management Plan (WMP) to understand the necessary steps if a test comes back positive for Legionella bacteria. Develop a Comprehensive Plan: Let's come up with a plan outlining what we are going to test, how often we will test, and how we will use the data. We should also decide how to handle positive results, particularly for different Legionella species. Taking some time to plan upfront will streamline the process when collecting water samples. By emphasizing the benefits of regular testing and a proactive approach, you can help clients understand the importance of more frequent Legionella testing and the value of a detailed WMP. Where can I find more information? On our Scaling UP! H2O Legionella Resources Page at www.ScalingUpH2o.com/Legionella there you'll find Legionella resources collected from the CDC, ASHRAE, OSHA, ASPE, WHO, ASSE, APIC, AIHA, ANSI, ASDWA, AWT, CMS, and others along with our prior Legionella podcast episodes, Legionella Legislation, and Legionella videos. “If you're calling it news. It has to be true.” - Scott Slade In our latest episode of the Scaling UP! H2O podcast, host Trace Blackmore sits down with renowned journalist Scott Slade to delve into the critical role media plays in elections. With over 30 years of experience as the host of Atlanta Morning News on WSB Radio, and inducted into the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Scott brings unparalleled expertise and insight into the influence, accuracy, and bias of media as we approach the upcoming presidential election. Key Takeaways from the Episode The Importance of Accuracy in Journalism Scott Slade emphasizes that journalism is the first draft of history, highlighting the paramount importance of accuracy in traditional media. "It's your job to tell a balanced story, "He states, underscoring the responsibility of journalists to provide truthful and comprehensive coverage. Diversifying News Sources Slade advises against relying on a single news source, advocating for a well-rounded media diet. He champions the legitimacy and depth provided by local newspapers and stresses the need to consume news from multiple outlets to avoid the echo chamber effect. Scott advises, "Read a strong daily newspaper or two every day, even if it's online. Listen to more than one radio and TV station, and don't get caught in the echo chamber of ideas." The Dangers of Soundbites In today's fast-paced media landscape, soundbites can easily be taken out of context when there's a sensational sound bite. Scott recommends a thorough approach: "You should try to understand the who, the what, the when, the where, and the how of where that soundbite came from and why it's being used in the story.” He warns against the sensationalism that can arise from these snippets and encourages listeners to seek out the full story to grasp the context and nuances behind the headlines, and reminds us that “It's up to the journalist to make sure you (the audience) understand the context. Social Media as a News Source While social media can be a convenient way to stay informed, Slade cautions against using it as a primary news source due to its potential for inaccuracy. He suggests prioritizing more reliable and vetted sources for critical information. Scott notes, "If I had to give up something, as far as being in the know about what's really going on, I think social media would be the first thing I'd give up. It has great entertainment value but when it comes to making decisions about things where you need to really rely on what's truthful and accurate. It can come up lacking." Factors that Drive Newsworthiness Slade outlines five key news values that attract the most attention: locality, universality, celebrity involvement, conflict, and oddity. Stories that meet these criteria are more likely to engage and inform the public. Scott shares, "If your story can fill one, or even better, more of those slots, it's usually a good one." Media's Influence on Elections The Power of Perception Media has a substantial influence on shaping public perception during elections. Scott explains, "Media can present a perception of someone by what they include and what they leave out." By choosing what to include and what to omit, media outlets can significantly impact voters' views. Upholding the Founding Fathers' Intent In a thought-provoking discussion, Slade and Blackmore touch on whether modern media upholds the First Amendment's intent. While media's role has evolved, the core responsibility of seeking and reporting truth remains unchanged. Scott remarks, "The society of professional journalists begins with seeking truth and reporting it." Advice for First-Time Voters For first-time voters feeling overwhelmed, Slade offers practical advice: "Preparation is the best remedy for stage fright. Knowledge is power." He encourages young voters to research candidates based on what matters most to them and to avoid the pitfalls of one-sided arguments. Final Thoughts This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intricate relationship between media and elections. Scott Slade's insights provide valuable guidance on navigating the complex media landscape, ensuring you stay informed and make well-rounded decisions as we head into the election season. What can impact the functional softening capacity of a water softener? Is it possible for the incoming hard water quality to change over time? How could iron in the incoming water impact softening capacity? Water softeners are more complex than that enclosed vessel you see before you day after day. What happens if suddenly there is no acid being fed to a cooling tower on an acid-control program? Does something happen immediately? Does something happen gradually? Where within the system could this something happen? How long could this lack of acid feed occur before anyone would find out? How could you determine remotely that the acid feed had stopped working? What alarms could be setup? Once the problem has been determined, should the acid feed be turned back on immediately? Could turning the acid feed back on immediately cause any problems within the system? What should be communicated to the end user about this occurrence? What could be done to prevent it from happening again? Should blowdown be adjusted during the response to the lack of acid feed? How might the other water treatment chemicals be impacted due to the lack of acid? A cooling tower's water treatment program is an expertly-balanced chemistry. If one part is negatively impacted, it may very well impact the other parts of the chemistry as well. There's a lot to think about when just one part goes wrong. Knowing the root cause will help prevent you from chasing your tail when trying to get the program back under control. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Picture it, if you will. The cooling tower is running like normal. As water flows, recirculates, and evaporates, we see the conductivity continues to increase. Then it happens. The conductivity reaches its setpoint on the controller. Then what? Seriously, what literally happens next? Does the controller immediately send a signal to the blowdown valve to open up? How does the controller's deadband or differential or whatever your controller manufacturer chooses to call it come into play? The controller uses a deadband so the blowdown valve does not try to chatter open and close as the conductivity fluctuates from being EXACTLY on the setpoint to NOT being exactly on the setpoint. Such chatter trying to open and close the valve could very quickly wear a valve out as well as the relays in the controller itself. Plus, the valves may not even be given enough time to reach their minimum energize times. Does the deadband sandwich your conductivity setpoint or is it a one-way setup where it starts at the setpoint? For example, if your conductivity setpoint is 1,000 microsiemens and your deadband is 100 microsiemens, would your blowdown valve first open at 1,000 or 1,050 microsiemens? This will depend upon your setup in the controller and the options the manufacturer has made available to you. Another point to consider is whether any biocide lockout timers are currently active which would prevent the cooling tower from blowing down during a biocide application. Once your blowdown valve is actually open, though, does the cooling tower conductivity start to drop IMMEDIATELY? Have you ever thought about this before? The answer is, actually, it probably does NOT start dropping immediately. The conductivity may even continue to rise until enough water has been removed from the system to drop the level low enough to trigger the makeup water valve to open. As fresh makeup water starts flowing, it will dilute the cooling tower water, and THIS is when the conductivity will begin to drop. Next, how low will the conductivity drop until the controller closes the blowdown valve? This is where the deadband or differential will come into play again. In our previous example of a conductivity setpoint of 1,000 microsiemens and a deadband of 100 microsiemens, when the conductivity drops to 900 microsiemens, the controller closes the blowdown valve, and the overall conductivity pattern repeats itself. As you can see, the control of conductivity in a cooling tower is not as simple as opening and closing a valve. There are design considerations to limit the wear and tear on the blowdown valve plus the reality of having to trigger makeup water flow as the water level lowers for the conductivity to actually start to drop. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! What's up my friends. Welcome back to the pod. This is your host, Andy Humphrey. I'm actually at the moment driving back from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I attended, uh, yesterday the conference called American... No. Association of Water Technology. Association of Water Technology. AWT. Annual National Conference was in Grand Rapids and I thought, you know what? I have an affinity for technology. I'm in the water business. Let me go check out this AWT conference. So, I drove down to Grand Rapids yesterday just to attend the trade show. It was 150 to go, you know, see who, see what the water technology conference is all about. I also wanted to catch up with my friend, Justin and Breck from OpConnect. Special shout out to you guys on the podcast today. Good to see ya. Lots of fun. Thank you for a good time last night. And anyway, back to the conference. Wasn't quite sure what to expect. You know, like I said, I just kind of figured that because I'm in the water technology business, I should go to the water technology conference. Come to find out that it was mostly... Hmm, what's the right way to describe it? Mostly, kind of industrial cooling towers, boilers, water treatment, things of that nature. And, I guess, uh, that's not what I would first think of as it relates to technology. However, there is a lot of technology in how we treat water and how we manage and control cooling towers. commercial buildings. And what was also interesting is that it was a bit similar to the irrigation and landscape industry. I might say a slightly more professional, and I, I say that from just judging the book by its cover, meaning it appeared that attendees were a little bit better Dressed than a landscape show. So it doesn't mean that it's higher quality. I just noticed that it seemed like it was a bit more of a professional event. I understood that there's about 5, 000 people that attended. And I think for me, and this kind of relates to something that I wanted to share with you today, it, it felt, it was good to see the water industry through a completely different lens. And to get on the field with a new set of players, not just, you know, guys like guys and gals like you and me that understand irrigation, but to see what is happening in other industries and how technology and I guess digital technology may be affecting other industries. And from the most part, it mostly felt like a conference from the early 2000s. In other words, I didn't see a lot of sort of IoT mobile software tech. There was some, but not a lot. Most of what I saw was industrial type controls. Lots of pipes, lots of valves, lots of dosing pumps, things of that nature. Less software. And what is fascinating, I think, about that is there, there could still be a bit of a missing gap in terms of these guys focus, uh, down in the weeds, although maybe it's not really down in the weeds, they focus on the details of water Clarity, I guess, or, or water, water treatment, uh, especially in the cooling towers, with less focus on how much water is going in and how much water is coming out. It's mostly they focus on what happens in between. Less focus on water going in and water going out, more focus on controlling the water, treating the water in between. And, uh, yeah, so I guess that was kind of my 10, 000 foot view, uh, observation. And it's not that different than... then the irrigation industry. Oftentimes, this industry, our industry, the landscape industry, focuses on, let's say, the runtime of the zone and the precipitation rate of the zone and the types of sprinklers and the types of drip and the spacing of the drip and the infiltration rate of the soil and all these things. The details in between with a little less focus on, uh, the 10, 000 foot view. How many gallons of water is this landscape using per cycle per day, per month, per year? And is that the right amount of water? You know, those 10, 000 foot view, uh, lenses that we, we spend less time focusing on the big picture and we spend more time focusing on the details. And I wonder. What would happen if we did it the other way around? Sometimes to, to see what you can't see you have to change the place that you're standing. You have to stand somewhere else and look back or take another perspective and that might be, as I, as I talk here, that might be the lead into What I, uh, wanted to share, which was kind of about, you know, our own biases or, or, or our own cognitive biases and our own blind spots. And this could be one of them, that we focus on the details, we focus on not mixing sprays and rotors and the fundamentals and the infiltration rate and the precipitation rate. And all of those details because we're not focusing on the big picture and maybe that is a potential blind spot. So my question would be, is it a blind spot? Where are your blind spots? How do you know if you have a blind spot? And I heard this quote earlier in the week. And you guys know that I like to write down the quotes that I hear and share them with you. So the quote went something like this. We believe that what we see. is all there is. I really like that. We believe that what we see is all there is. And that's why oftentimes we almost want to convince other people that what we believe is true because that's all that we see. And the analogy that, uh, I don't remember who said this. I just wrote it down, but I didn't, I can't remember actually where I heard it, but the analogy was You're on a train, and you're holding a ball. You're on a train, you're holding a ball, the train is going 60 miles an hour, how fast is the ball moving? I'll let you think about that. You're on a train, you're holding a ball, you're going 60 miles an hour, how fast is the ball moving? And I love this because your first thought is, well, the ball... Or maybe your thought is the ball's not moving. I'm, I'm on the train. I'm holding the ball. The ball's not moving. But, but what I didn't give you, what I didn't give you was to think about from whose perspective am I asking? Am I asking you on the train how fast the ball is moving or am I asking someone else outside the train how fast the ball is moving? Because depending on who you ask, you will get two different answers. If you ask the person on the train, they'll tell you the ball's not moving. If you ask the person outside the train how fast the ball is moving, they'll say the ball went past at 60 miles an hour. So, one question can have two different, completely different answers, yet both are 100 percent correct. It just depends on who you ask. So I think that it, we could get caught up in, in a similar pattern in our industry when someone asks the question, how do you reduce water usage? Well, we're probably all going to have the same answers, but the answers could vary depending on who you're asking and what their level of knowledge is, and how they want, what their plan of attack would be to reduce the water usage. Again, I don't think that there's any one particular way or one particular answer. There's only many answers and there may be a couple more questions that you want to ask before you can answer that question more accurately. So, yeah, coming back to the, to the water conference. That's how I felt a bit. I was able to change my perspective, go from inside the train to outside the train or go from inside the irrigation water industry to step out of the industry and step in to the water technology through a different lens, through this industrial. Uh, industrial water technology lens. And come to find out, there's a lot of similarities. It's water. Water is used. Water is wasted. And there is technology both controlling the water, monitoring the water, and managing the water. And, like I said, I think the closest similarity is that both industries, when you're in the industry deep, you focus on the details. You focus on... The small, the small aspects and you lose a little bit of perspective on the bigger, on the bigger picture. And because I'm not in the industrial water space and I don't know how to treat the water like all these guys in the show and gals in the show know and they know their industry inside and out. My observation was that's where they focus. And when I asked people. Who manages, who decides how much water goes into the building for, let's say the cooling tower and how much goes out and is that the right amount? A majority of the response was that that wasn't really managed or tracked. So I think we should probably reflect back and ask ourselves those same questions. How many gallons should this site? Should this landscape be using? Start with the big picture. How much water goes into the landscape? How much water goes out of the landscape? Can't really measure how much goes out of the landscape, but how much goes in and is that the right amount? Start there, then, then go down. into the details to figure out how to make that, how to make that happen, how to apply that right amount of water just simply based on gallons per square foot per day. Gallons per square foot per day, per cycle, per month, per year. What is your gallons per square foot and how do you set up the control system to apply that? Right amount of gallons per square foot and how do you monitor it to make sure you're still applying the gallons the correct gallons per square foot, so Bunch of things here today to share with you, but I just wanted to kind of give you my thoughts on the association of water Technology and just that that quote here that we believe that what we see is all there is That's such a good one. We believe that all We believe that what we see is all there is, so the next time you're, you're stuck, the next time you're not seeing something, get off the train and then see how fast the ball is moving. Otherwise, the ball's not going to be moving. All right, I think that's what I have here today, guys. Thanks for, thanks for tuning in. Appreciate you listening to, uh, the last couple weeks of my solo episodes and... I do have, there's a whole bunch of new content that I am preparing that could possibly take this podcast in a slightly, uh, different direction, still water, but, uh, perhaps in a slightly different direction, and I'm kind of putting the framework for that together with a possible, uh, December, I shouldn't say launch, not really a launch, but, um, Perhaps a December pivot. Not, not quite sure yet. Still getting my thoughts together, but I think overall I'd really like to start talking more about water in its entirety with maybe a slightly less focus on the ins and outs of irrigation specifically. So. Anyway, that's kind of, uh, what's going on in my head. Thanks again for listening. Appreciate you guys. Remember to subscribe to this podcast, podcast, podcast. How will the use of hydrochloric acid impact the level of chlorides in a water system? Why is it sometimes called muriatic acid?

Coop has not only taken Michael up on his invitation to join the medical practice -- he brings in a contractor to start talking about knocking down walls before he's even met Peter! Who by the way isn't thrilled to have this development sprung on him. Michael has MANY problems other than his business partner's rage: Megan gets him to enter couples' therapy, where they are challenged not to lie to each other for 48 whole hours. And: Taylor's plan to get artificially inseminated goes off the rails due to a problem at the sperm bank. Wherever will she find more sperm before she's done ovulating?! Peter also has some other plots cooking: after Amanda mentioned in passing that she might want to start her own new ad agency, Peter's enlisted Billy to come up with a prospectus, and believes that if he can just give Amanda the money to get it off the ground, she'll fall in love with him again for sure. Not thrilled with this plan: Sam, who is worried about what Craig will do if he suffers another huge loss. And she's not alone. No need to fill out a withdrawal slip: our podcast on "No Time For Sperm Banks" is here! Though being a bitch queen has generally worked out for Amanda, her run may be at an end: Craig and Sydney are conspiring to bring down D&D from within, and her desperate attempt to get back the capital she poured into the jazz club fails when Kyle has to tell her he spent it on tables and bands and napkins and stuff. It's more than she can take -- literally (in a physical sense). And D&D is not the only Melrose Place business going through changes: Jake has sold Shooters to an entirely offscreen buyer, but Alison doesn't seem too excited about starting her new life in Ojai: she picks a fight about putting her dreams on hold for his, races back to L.A., "forgets" she has important real estate papers in her car and asks Colleen to bring them up to Jake. She couldn't push the two former partners closer together if she tried! (...Hmmmm.) Michael and Taylor's scheme against Peter kicks into its final phase, only to risk blowback when this physician seeks a second opinion on his surgeon partner's neurological diagnosis, then yells about it in front of said partner's chump wife. Sam and Billy continue clashing over Jim's place in their lives, but Billy ultimately sides with the cops and against the prospect of doing any jail time. And the custody battle over Chelsea comes to an end. And then another end. Amanda returns from the DR divorced and in a great mood...until she learns that Sydney's employment was a condition of her settling her lawsuit. Sydney is suspicious about why Amanda is putting so many D&D resources behind the launch of Kyle's stupid club, while Amanda is greedily jealous of Craig's relationship with Sydney even though Amanda didn't even want him when she could have easily had him, and just regular jealous that Kyle hired Jennifer to tend bar at the club without running it by Amanda first. Colleen comes back to town upon the very predictable end of her marriage, bringing David to spend some time with Jake before Colleen and David move out of state; Alison gets just as predictably bent out of shape about it, given that she was already worried that her infertility was denying Jake one of his longest-held life goals. Billy eludes the cops to get Jim his cash, only to learn there's yet another stipulation: Jim isn't leaving town without Sam. This finally leads Sam and Billy to come clean to the cops...but will they have done so in time? Michael and Taylor enact their plot against Peter, causing Megan to become suspicious about Michael's possibly cheating on her (again) with his partner's wife. And Matt and Chelsea are still here, spinning their wheels. Megan snitches to Kyle about Jennifer's new strip club job, from which he extricates her just before she's about to accept a promotion from server to performer, setting her up in his apartment...alone, because it's time for Amanda and Kyle to journey to the Dominican Republic to finalize their quickie divorces, but oh no! Amanda's apparently terrible travel agent booked them in a resort that has had its one road washed out during the rainy season, so they're going to have to stay in a VERY rustic beach shack arranged by a random cab driver Kyle meets at the airport! Roughing it eventually brings out the best in Amanda, and the two get closer commiserating, some more, about the end of their marriages. But can it last, given Kyle's current house guest? Jennifer also witnesses Michael and Taylor scheming to trick Peter into thinking he has rage epilepsy and is physically abusing Taylor during blackouts; Taylor excitedly plants a big kiss on Michael to seal their evil deal, which Jennifer is delighted to report to Megan later. The cops release Billy and Sam, continuing to surveil them in a way that does not involve watching the back of their apartment, which Jim uses to enter and demand $10,000 and a ticket to Mexico, or else he'll tell the cops they were in on his whole plan. And this is not the only threat in the episode: after Sydney comes clean to Craig about the plot she hatched with Harry, and how he tried to hold her to it after she wanted to stop, Craig rides to her rescue. And in the "about to leave the show" plot basement, Alison and Jake plan to move to Ojai and buy a restaurant; and Matt and Denise continue scrapping over Chelsea. If you worried that we might not hear about the jazz club this time, don't! Amanda has decided she needs to formalize her partnership with Kyle, and he eventually agrees -- as long as there's no chance Peter is going to weasel his way in. Amanda is on the same page, but regarding Taylor, so a summit is arranged at which the matter of these two lingering divorces is finally addressed. Taylor is pretty eager to sign any paperwork Kyle puts in front of her considering that Peter is still being controlling about her full-on Beth impersonation, but Michael is still hanging around, looking to turn Taylor's building resentment against Peter, to Michael's advantage. Meanwhile, Craig is still pursuing his campaign to make Sydney horny enough to drop her lawsuit; it's too bad she's not the only one he should be trying to manipulate. Former fiancés Billy and Alison are not having a great time: Billy the idiot lets Sam convince him not to call the cops on Jim immediately; and Alison learns that being on your best behavior as a potential adoptive parent means you don't get any nights off to get hammered. Jennifer lands on her feet -- presumably in spike heels, since she's waiting tables at a strip club; and Matt and Denise are still having the same fight about Chelsea. Our A plot is basically a thicket of bad decisions: Amanda and Kyle going into the JAZZ CLUB business together! Jennifer impulsively outing her five-month affair with Kyle -- because yes, she was the server he fooled around with in Boston! Alison drinking in virtually every one of her scenes and Jake defending it to Amanda and Billy! And Taylor going along with Peter's domineering-husband role-play! For a while, anyway. The former employee's of Sydney's (RIP) are both getting jerked around by the shadiest men in their lives: Jim is trying to extort even more money out of Sam, while Craig keeps tabs on Sydney by treating her to a Palm Springs spa vacation she seems to see no reason to question. Denise reluctantly goes along with a judge's order that Chelsea resume living with Matt, but on her lawyer's advice, she deputizes Chelsea to start keeping a snitch log they can eventually use to contest Matt's custody in court. Sydney's not thrilled that the grift she and Harry ran on D&D has resulted in actual injury for her. She is thrilled that he thinks they can take the agency for $5 million. Amanda's not worried about the lawsuit since this is exactly why they have insurance, but whoops, it turns out their policy renewal required some exclusions: of course the rickety stairs to the Business Balcony were among them, and of course Craig never got around to fixing them. But it's fine because he knows how to solve this problem: he'll just seduce Sydney so she drops the suit! Hey, I have a great icebreaker about one thing they have in common: carelessness with their insurance policies. Amanda can't concern herself too much with this, because she's got Kyle to hang out with AS FRIENDS. Just friends on the dance floor, talking about their dreams! That's a much more pleasant topic for her than a disastrous job interview she's just conducted with one Jennifer Mancini -- yes, Michael's younger sister, who's just shown up in L.A. to start a new life, but not in advertising. When Sam warns her father that the feds are on to him, he declines her suggestion that he turn himself in; instead, he sneaks out to a motel, Sam lies to Billy that he went to Chicago, and then easily gets $500 out of him to pass on to Jim to finance his vague plans of fleeing the country. Matt and Denise are still wrangling over Chelsea, and Jake still has one very special ex: Colleen is in town to ask for his help with David, and to make things weird for Alison. Having lost everything thanks to Hilda's scam lawsuit, Sydney still doesn't want to accept Hilda's lawyer's offer to become his new partner in financial crime, but it's hard to deny they make a good team when they grift $2000 off another driver in well under two minutes flat. So she seeks a job waiting tables at Kyle's, which he's happy to give her as soon as he confirms it's really going to bug Taylor. But how long will Sydney hold out against Harry's attractive pitch -- particularly once she realizes she could use their combined skills against Amanda, her main rival for Kyle's affections? The aforementioned Taylor has problems outside the restaurant, too, as Peter keeps buying her dowdy clothes; when Kyle returns Peter and Beth's wedding album to her, she finally figures out exactly why Peter's giving her this extreme makeover. Sydney's not the only one hitting up a neighbor for a job in hospitality: Sam gets Jake to give her dad, Jim, a job at Shooters. Not even Billy's report of receiving threats from Jim about their relationship can convince Sam that his sudden return is worrisome and that Jim is keeping secrets from her. And she's not the only one awkwardly reuniting with a parent: Chelsea's mother Denise returns, much to Matt's chagrin. Jake and Alison decide to let fate determine where they're going to elope, and Megan refuses instructions from Michael on a scheme to undermine Peter, but accepts advice from Kimberly's ghost on how to keep their marriage alive. The last episode having left both Alison and Kimberly in possibly mortal danger from their own bodies (and not fire, or Michael, as is usually the case), it makes sense that they share the A plot. Alison has been hospitalized with toxemia and orders not to do anything that might raise her blood pressure, including watch TV -- which seems crazy until some gossip Jake relays (well, look who's suddenly not to good to repeat scandalous stories) makes her laugh herself into a seizure. Mrs. Shaw has responded to Michael's call and is, justifiably, horrified by the sight of her daughter's condition. But while Kimberly wants to leave Los Angeles on good terms with the only two characters who are still speaking to her, Mrs. Shaw (again, justifiably) hates Michael and doesn't want to co-operate. Billy's not happy with the way Sam's father Jim is taking advantage of her, and the more he learns about Jim's life of crime, the less he likes him. And while Sam herself is clearly also uncomfortable about Jim's return to her life, Sydney can't notice or care, since she's busy defending herself, very badly, against Hilda's nuisance suit. Peter may have moved on from Amanda, but he's apparently yet to move on from Beth, while Amanda ruins Craig's attempts to spend time with her outside of work by inviting Kyle along. And Chelsea's mother actually decides to phone her half-orphaned child at Matt's, and announce her plans to take Chelsea back to Paris with her. Alison continues to go stir-crazy on cervix-related bed rest, so when Amanda announces that she's taking over one of Alison's big clients, Alison decides the money is too important, and sneaks into the office for a day to do the pitch herself. Of course this is the one day Jake ever comes home early from Shooters, and the return of Seething Incubator Cop Jake is unwelcome to say the least. Things are far different for Alison's boss, however! Taylor has fully moved in with Peter, ignoring all hints and direct recommendations that she not plan to make it permanent. And the way people are sharing her personal business, she shouldn't plan on going back to Kyle, either: Amanda tells him what she heard Jake heard Alison heard in the courtyard in the last episode, so Kyle confronts Taylor and finally gets her to admit the whole truth about why they live in Los Angeles now. But if divorce has turned Kyle into a twisted husk, Amanda is living her best life: buying a Jaguar, killing the game at work, and flirting with Kyle -- maybe for real, and maybe just for sport. Michael decides that the way to make sure Megan doesn't accidentally become a sex worker again is to give her a straight job, which is how she becomes the practice's newest receptionist. It's also how she happens to be present when Kimberly's neurologist shows up to tell Michael that Kimberly is at risk of dying from an aneurysm if she won't agree to surgery. Michael either doesn't believe it or doesn't care, but when Megan goes to see her, she can tell the danger to Kimberly's life is very real, and does what all Burns-Mancini office staffers do: she steals from the practice (this time, to send a nurse to take care of Kimberly). While Sydney tries to handle her lawsuit -- which is going to be hard, because she carelessly let her insurance lapse and can't afford a lawyer -- Samantha climbs the friendship ladder with another neighbor, pitching in on Matt's efforts to locate his runaway niece. With so many people's drama suddenly exploding into chaos, how is SYDNEY the pivot point? Well: she lets it slip in conversation with Peter that she slept with Kyle at the restaurant. Taylor walks in just in time to hear Peter confronting Kyle about it. And Kyle's at the center of a lot of eavesdropping action: first, when an ordered-to-couch-rest Alison overhears Taylor admitting to Kyle that Peter was once her brother-in-law, which Alison goes on to tell Jake; then, when Sam overhears Kyle telling Sydney that the news is out about their hookup. Oh, and: Sydney is the victim of an obvious slip-and-fall scam artist played by Edie McClurg! Somehow, Megan's arrest makes it to the newspaper of a large metropolitan city, causing her scandalized landlady to evict her on 24 hours' notice. Megan self-pities her way through the next couple of days, moving into a cheap motel and leaving all vestiges of her life with Michael back at her vacant house for him to collect. And Chelsea continues to be a pain in all surviving Fieldings' asses. Rejoice! Amanda immediately regrets revenge-boning Craig, but honestly, she gets off easiest in this episode! Taylor takes her bruised face to Peter's, and is horrified to learn that Peter totally knew that Amanda saw them fooling around but declined to tell her: now she's worried that the information is going to get back to Kyle, known loose cannon. Turns out she's right to be worried about BOTH those things, and probably should have spent some of her commuting time coming up with better cover stories than "I was at the gym" to satisfy Kyle's curiosity. She's such a bad liar, in fact, that Kyle returns to Nick to find out what HE knows; when he hears the tape of Taylor and Peter's filthy phone sex, it seems like he really wishes he hadn't. Josh The Pimp hatches an extremely baroque plan: Kimberly will think she's showing Michael that Megan is seeing clients again, but ACTUALLY Josh and Megan will be setting Kimberly up to look like a liar by lining up a fake client. But could it ACTUALLY be the case that Josh has his own agenda? HMMM. Also Matt has a brother named Luke -- or, rather, had, because the first time we're hearing about him is when their mom tells Matt that he died in a plane crash, leaving a teen daughter, Chelsea, who may have bigger issues than either of Luke's adult survivors is prepared to deal with. Taylor and Peter know that Nick is on to them since, you know, he told them -- and he's also toying with Taylor by suggesting that he actually MIGHT eventually show Kyle the photos. So Taylor and Peter hatch a scheme of their own, to disable Nick long enough for Peter to sneak into his apartment and steal the incriminating evidence. Meanwhile, Craig pouts his way into getting Amanda to rent him Alison's old apartment (VERY old, at this point -- has it been vacant this whole time?!), on the condition that he not use it to insinuate himself further into her life. And how could he, living RIGHT NEXT DOOR to her? Josh The Pimp continues his campaign against Megan and Michael's...do we want to call it happiness, really? Soon, we find out he hasn't returned to her life by random chance; he has a benefactor who busted him out of prison and who is really just using Josh The Pimp as a tool to break up Michael and Megan. Guess who it is? The answer won't surprise you. Jake, Alison, Billy, Sam, and Sydney all get one scene to let us know they still exist -- a courtesy not extended to Matt. It truly takes no time at all for Nick to follow Peter and Taylor to a public place and snap a bunch of photos of the two of them having sex, so whatever Craig is paying him for surveillance...it's too much. Elsewhere at Kyle's, Carter is loving his new life as a dishwasher, until loitering in the parking lot makes him subject to menacing by a random street tough -- and, believe it or not, his week gets even worse after that. Jake returns to Los Angeles to try to reconcile with Alison, and stupid Sam continues being a crappy friend when she volunteers to help. Megan is still trying to prove that Kimberly does not, in fact, need Michael's attention full-time, but by the time the episode ends, she's going to be nostalgic for the time when Kimberly was her biggest problem. The reconciliation with Peter that Amanda had hoped for is not going to happen quite yet: partly due to Peter's having run into a shirtless Craig at Amanda's, and (not that he's telling Amanda this) partly because Peter and Taylor have FINALLY had sex. Kyle has to take an emergency trip back to Boston, but asks Nick to keep an eye on Taylor in Kyle's absence, which hateful Nick is only too happy to do -- and it'll be pretty easy since they're both working at the restaurant and Nick is moving into Sydney's old place, right next door to the McBrides! Also getting embroiled with the McBrides: Carter, who decides that just giving up his software company wasn't enough of a change, and that he also needs to cosplay as a member of the working class by getting a job as a waiter at Kyle's -- where Craig happens to catch Nick giving Taylor and Peter a dirty look and enlisting him on the spot to spy for Craig, as part of Craig's ongoing campaign to date Amanda. Jake takes a break from acting out about his breakup with Alison to remember he has a child already and go visit him, and his (re-cast) mother, in northern California. And while Megan continues whining about how much she misses Michael's penis, Kimberly learns that...it might be magic? In another classic midseason Melrose Place two-parter, Amanda and Peter each notch a big career win through underhanded schemes against their enemies. OBVIOUSLY THESE TWO ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER, which is why it's so frustrating that timing and circumstances (read: the writers) keep conspiring (read: contriving) to keep them from reconciling. For most of this episode, Taylor's not even to blame, because she's occupied with Kyle's shitty friend Nick...who happens to have noticed how much Taylor lights up when Peter comes to Kyle's and vaguely threatens to use this against her, since apparently Kyle hasn't spent any of their bro time together complaining about it. When Sydney pushes Sam to the brink of insanity, Billy seizes his moment to invite Sam to move in with him instead, just in time for Alison and Jake to have a huge fight, requiring Alison to bunk with the newly-cohabitant. Sydney, meanwhile, is still working on driving a wedge between Carter and Walter. Megan would probably LOVE to drive a wedge between Michael and Kimberly, but Kimberly is just better at convincing Michael that she needs him to be her hospice nurse, and maybe more. The less said about a completely nonsensical fight between Sam and Sydney over Jane's former apartment, the better: the upshot is that Billy recommends that Sam explore her rights by talking to a lawyer about it, only to regret it when it turns out she knows one, because they used to date. While this is going on, Sydney blows town with Carter to visit important locations from his formative years. Are they sneaking off in defiance of Walter, or playing right into his hands? Jake is excited to show Alison the house he wants to raise their child in, completely oblivious to the look of abject terror on her face. While Michael is unconscious following his (latest) car crash, a hallucination of his two most recent wives seems to push him toward Megan. But when he comes to, Kimberly tells him she's ready to accept his help through her last weeks on earth. Amanda has regrets about how things are going in her marriage when Peter tells her he's rented himself a new place, and Peter's good friend Taylor has problems with a whole new man: Kyle's old army buddy Nick. Getting shoved through a glass table turns out to have been the last straw for Matt, who has an infuriatingly offscreen conversation with Peter about Dan; Peter then confronts Dan about it, and Dan reacts as though Peter has authority over him, for some reason? Peter also helps Michael meddle in Kimberly's private medical affairs after Kimberly lies to Michael that she's totally not dying at all. Once Michael knows the truth, he informs Kimberly that he's going to spending as much time with her as he possibly can; she pretends to go along, but then finds a pier. She loses the nerve to die by suicide then, but it's not her last attempt of the episode. At D&D, Amanda starts right in using Craig's disclosure to her own advantage, but may overplay her hand when she involves Arthur himself. You're not going to believe this but Jane was no better running this business than she was any of the others we've seen her in charge of, and Sydney's doing a lot of scrambling to get on top of the mess Jane left. The situation is so dire that it might really help if Sydney had another source of income, yet when Walter offers to pay her to hang out with Carter, she says no. Instead, she chases the money for the "Kirov" paintings from Kyle, reigniting Taylor's suspicions. When Sam's not occupied getting bossed around by Sydney, she's helping her apparent new best friend Alison determine that she definitely is pregnant, and encouraging her to bring Jake into the conversation. Pretty much everyone crowds into the overstuffed A plot: Peter, with his regained doctorly confidence, attempts to reconcile with Amanda, but right now she's laser-focused on getting Craig to tell her his big secret about Arthur. Sam and Billy are annoyingly happy -- and since all the boning means Sam definitely can't let her Pill prescription lapse, she happens to be at the drugstore when Alison is picking out a pregnancy test. Matt comes up with a story about how he got his black eye, which no one finds convincing -- particularly not after Matt and Dan have dinner with Sam and Billy (?), and Dan can barely stop himself controlling Matt's wine consumption. Sydney grows increasingly frustrated by Carter's apparent unwillingness to spend any time with her outside of his house and away from his "online conferences." But the plotline's biggest fireworks are for Jane, who gets robbed at gunpoint in the store and struggles to determine what the right path forward may be. Megan and Kimberly manage to convince Michael that they haven't been collaborating, leading Michael to sign the divorce papers and go to Vegas with Megan. But back in L.A., Peter's sniffing around Kimberly's doctors, and soon calls with bad news.
