Jeanie Cisco-Meth returns to the podcast with another great conversation! Jeanie has written two best selling books despite being told in elementary school I was too stupid to make it. She was in the Army and the first female to make the Ranger Challenge team in Utah. She loves her life everyday. Her book, Bully Proofing You: Taming the Bully Between Your Ears is in the education business helping people through our presentations, workshops, best-selling books, and mentoring is a reminder that it's not about you. It's about the pain others are facing. They feel depressed and anxious and they can't stand it if you don't feel the same way. When you remember they are in pain, you can let their cutting comments go. Jeanie recalls being bullied. She saw my children bullied. She was a high school teacher for 17 years and had to do something to make a difference. In our interview she also recalls being the difference when she was the first woman in her family to stand up for herself. She feels she was born to break the cycle of manipulation in her family. Evette Davis is a parenting expert, author, and huge advocate of traditional family values. Evette joins us from Washington, DC where she raised 3 kids, taking them from public schools to American's top universities. Today she talks to us about parenting as a single mother and her new book set, “The Adventures of Sunny” and how reading to your kids can help prepare them for college. During a time of setback in Evette's life, she turned her situation around and became an entrepreneur. Evette is now a children's author, with 5 published books, a YouTube channel, and more books on the way. Evette and I talked about how children are exposed to too much negative media. Movies and vision programming are everywhere. Unfortunately, most of it is not happy, wholesome, and healthy for young minds. So much of our media today is full of profanity, fear, shock, murder, and general negativity. Further, explicit sexual content is everywhere, from advertisements to billboards...it's almost ubiquitous. Keeping healthy images and positive media in front of our kids can be an uphill battle. Kids are like sponges, they absorb their environment. If they grow up watching shows filled with dysfunction, they will see this as normal. This will definitely impact how they behave. After going from a strong, moral upbringing in Southern Oklahoma to a drug-related downfall that had me facing federal prison, Robert Newman understands what those who are addicted feel and think. That's what enables him to cut through the resistance and manipulative tactics of an addicted person and help them choose life and recovery. In the eighteen years since Robert completed a long-term drug rehabilitation program, he has educated more than a hundred thousand youth on the dangers of drug abuse and helped thousands of people with drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Many of those he helped with their addictions as a substance abuse counselor, now many more as a drug intervention specialist. Now, Robert's focus is on doing interventions that turn situations from tragic to hopeful. When he walks into a room full of family who have asked for help, he knows exactly how to cut through the emotion and confusion and establish ground rules to make the intervention a success. A successful intervention is so much about preparation. Robert will work with the family to ensure they have chosen a good rehab and cut off all avenues of evasion so their loved one has only one choice ahead of them — start rehab right now. Robert Newman helps families and save lives by helping addicts in need find good treatment programs and families with loved ones suffering with addiction get into treatment. In this episode, Robert and I talk about breaking the cycle of addiction, supporting family members in intervention and recovery, and how to foster a culture of preventing drug addiction. Whitney Bean is a wellness and life coach. Her business is to help moms to find balance and to listen to their natural instincts and experiences in order to then show up as the most authentic and genuine version of themselves. She passionately believes that they can then in turn utilize those tools and skills to create an intentional home that can also find balance, peace, and flow. A mom of 4 kids ages 1-10, Whitney loves to dig into the messy, stressful, and dramatic areas of her client's lives so that she can help them to organize, evaluate, and find balance from the inside out. Whitney is passionate about building a home-based intentional, natural, and practical principles that bring peace, unity, and balance. Whitney and I talked about how she thinks the concept of "hard work" in order to get what you want is something that is culturally stuck. When we work with our natural capability to feel and experience and blossom as individuals, creating amazing outcomes and results is a wonderful side effect. You can push through and work like crazy to get there, but if you check in and come from a place of balance, you'll get there as a genuine and natural bi-product of living an intentional life. A suggested solution to counteract the over-emphasis on pushing hard work is setting up systems that will regularly check in with each member of the family and help the family to feel like a supported family unit. Each member is responsible for their emotions, actions, and interactions. When the home acts as its own organism, that overall balance will create flow and help the family to achieve goals and outcomes that they might have otherwise pushed to get done. For example, growing a garden as a family--you could push each family member to get garden chores done, or you could spend time together in the garden where naturally pulling weeds and checking on the plants is a comfortable and fun time together. As moms learn to check in regularly and allow space to feel and respond, they're genuine and connected. They're at peace in the present moment and there's no better gift that you can give your kids day to day than them seeing you self-care easily and be with them. After a health crisis in her 20s, Whitney started learning to look inward for solutions. For two years she searched for solutions outward through medications and testing. When that didn't work she started leaning toward holistic remedies. This is the approach Whitney takes with her wellness clients. She helps you connect inward to create your solutions. Whitney has provided a freebie inside of the Family Leadership Toolbox which you can access by logging in at https://bit.ly/FamilyCultureLeadership. Her freebie is a "Restoring Balance" download to help you define what balance looks like in four areas of your life. To connect with Whitney, go to www.whitneybean.com

6:1 The Close, The Many, and The Powerful - How James Clear Defines Cultural Influencers

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2021 7:06

What is up, family culture hackers?! Welcome to the movement to revolutionize your family culture - a movement to shift away from the norms and values established by a society and a history saddled in a narrative of vanity, fear, scarcity, lack, prejudice, consumerism, inauthenticity, and contempt. These prevailing and pervasive beliefs are everywhere and most of us know it but we don't really know what to do about it!  I started learning about these dysfunctional beliefs when my life started going off the rails in 2016 (well, it started a lot sooner than that, but we'll get into that later)! My husband, Michael, was miserable at his job. He hadn't been able to find work in line with his goals so he found whatever he could and then found himself underemployed and unappreciated. We started having serious money problems, and soon found ourselves spiraling into serious depression. Without even realizing it, we were playing out a scripted narrative based in a patriarchal belief system. More than this, we were playing out a narrative of scarcity and lack, and fear and inauthenticity that had been inadvertently passed on to us from previous generations that have been deeply ingrained in our family and societal belief systems. We had roles to play, images to uphold, and duties to perform. We did everything right, and should have been on the right track. We kept our struggles at the surface in an effort to superficially resolve our problems with linear thinking to keep up the status quo. This status quo meant keeping up appearances and playing out the script for the foreseeable future. Then, we began to crack. The vision of being stuck like this forever was deeply depressing. There was no end and no escape. In 2019, we'd had enough. Michael quit his job. We sold our house. We moved in with my parents to reduce our expenses. We filed bankruptcy in 2020, and faced all our demons. All of them.  If you are dying to make a change in your life somehow but you are feeling stuck, it is not your fault! These dominant belief systems often live just beneath the surface of your consciousness and you live out your day to day reacting to these beliefs. They have been passed on to you by society and family - sometimes even written into your DNA, so how could you know about it?!  Family culture hacking is all about learning how to recognize these dysfunctional belief systems and stopping them in their tracks! Whenever you spot one, you'll be able to say, “ah ha! Caught you!” Like a glitch in the Matrix. You'll start to see them lurking everywhere - in your thoughts and language; in media, music, and marketing; in education; in government and politics; and even in your daily habits! There are three major players in the belief systems you pick up that influence your family culture the most. Author James Clear refers to these players as “the close,” “the many,” and “the powerful.” The close refers to your family and your community. The many refers to society at large and the commonly accepted narratives and norms you witness in the media and marketing. The powerful refers to the influencers, the leaders, and the game-changers throughout history who set the cultural expectations of your beliefs and identities.  If you aren't aware, these three players can keep us stuck in a cultural identity that influences your thoughts, behaviors, and patterns. Because of the way humans are wired, we don't want to be different. We learn early on how to fit in so we don't get into trouble, or we learn when to stand out when we want to get what we want! We pick up beliefs about who we are to explain to ourselves how the world works and where we fit into the grand scheme of things.  It's likely you have learned to be comfortable with those beliefs because they have protected you and have provided you with your basic human needs. They have shaped your identity and perhaps have gotten you through some seriously troubling...

Christine Owens is a mother of four children from ages 6 -16 and has homeschooled for 10 years in five states. She has 14 years experience in various facets of public education. She has traveled to 20 countries , and over 1/2 of the united states. Her family loves to travel and loves traveling to learn. She loves chocolate, old books and hippos.  Christine creates homeschooling resources to help parents learn through classic literature. This would include unit studies based on classic literature and soon to include resources on poetry. She has also written two books: Relaxed Homeschooling: Unlocking the Secrets of books and life to help people find a new way to see homeschooling; and A Year of Poetry Tea Time: The Essential Guide to Everything Poetry and Tea, a collection of poetry and so much more.  Christine and I discussed a dysfunction in our society that children have to learn certain things by a certain age and that ages need to be taught separately. The reality is parents need to realize that schools are designed for the masses. They are not there to accommodate and one child's special interests. If a child is aloud to learn about things that interest them, that they are curious about their level of retention is improved greatly. Letting children learn through curiosity not only increases their retention but also leads to a love for learning. When children fall in love of learning they are also more willing to learn new things. Not only that, but children are very capable of learning, understanding, and discussing things that are considered "to advanced" for them. This is why I started to read poetry and unabridged classics to my children at a young age.  Whether they are homeschooled or public schooled parents can benefit from knowing this information. Parents need to know that even though their children may be attending classes at a school that ultimately it is the parents responsibility to make sure their children receive the education they want them to have. This can include taking action and reading classic literature to children at night, Playing fun trivia games during dinner, teaching adult skills like cooking, finances, and serving others.  The very first classic Christine read to her children was Howard Pyle's Robin Hood. "At first I thought I had lost my mind. Not only was the book in an old english but I had to read it. I had to stop and explain what was happening every sentence. I was wanting to just throw in the towel but at the same time I refused. After a while I got better at reading and I was explaining things every paragraph and then once on a page. To my astonishment, my tiny 4 and 6 year old were starting to understand the book and by half way through I was nearly having to explain anything any more. They were laughing at the jokes and cheering on the characters. This made me realize that it did not have to worry so much about what topics we learned about but just how we experienced it. Since then we have read many books, read poetry, learned about philosophers, history and anything else that struck us as interesting." Your child's education happens everywhere. Parents can and should lead out in discussions, read aloud to their children of all ages, and encourage their children to develop their learning skills. Sandra uses her experience and training in Myers-Briggs personality type, to work one on one with families, helping them parent more effectively and peacefully based on their children's unique wiring and needs.  Sandra works with families and personality type. Specifically, she uses the Myers-Briggs personality type model to change the way parents relate to themselves and their children. When you understand your children's personality types, you can better honor their needs and help them grow up happy and fulfilled. When you understand your own personality type and that of our parenting partner, we can communicate and work better together to improve the overall family dynamic. There is a favoring of extraversion in our dominant culture despite the fact that there are slightly more people who prefer introversion in the world. Sandra and I go into this facet in our children and how kids who prefer introversion have differing needs from those who prefer extraversion.  Sandra goes into understanding the brain mechanisms behind introversion/extraversion and how to work specific tips into your parenting for your Introversion kiddos (and some for your extraversion kiddos too!) When you expect your children to operate in their less comfortable way (i.e. expecting a child who prefers Introversion to act more like an extravert) you are causing them chronic stress. Inspiring her students to discover their story, value their culture, and develop empathy for others is an essential part of the mission of The Speak Feed Lead Project. Children are undervalued as a source of inspiration. They've been taught this as well, leading them to internalize their feelings without the skills to share them properly. Communication is not optional. When parents and children don't communicate it leads to misinterpretation, misinformation, and misperception. The solution is helping children, teens and adults to examine their values, discover their stories, and learn to use their voice for good. Parents love when children answer questions with actual words rather than grunts or "whatever". Conversation and listening skills are the foundation to clear and concise communication. Governments spend millions of dollars on youth programs, and it's not working. The stats regarding juvenile justice, foster care, and homelessness are astounding in their proof of failure. Your children begin to act entitled, and aren't learning the skills of responsibility, gaining confidence through work, nor how to care for themselves and contribute to the family like a team.  When kids are taught these skills, the load can be distributed to the whole family. Kent and Amy are the parents of 7 and grandparents to 6. They have been parenting for 28 years and find their greatest joy with their family. They are also passionate about helping youth to recognize and stand in their greatness and have been inspiring youth for 2 decades. For the last decade they have also been training parents how to be mentors in their own homes. Kent and Amy believe that families are worth fighting for and created Revolutionary Heroes to help families win that fight and develop amazing youth who live as modern day heroes. Kent and Amy train parents and youth to learn from leaders of the past how to live principles of truth and step up and live as Heroes whose impact is Revolutionary. They teach online parenting courses to help parents increase their confidence, see their children as heroes, and have increased success in their homes by making paradigm shifts and learning powerful tools. They also teach online youth courses to help youth and children to understand their own greatness and be able to stand up and make a difference for good in the world, and teach live training courses to teachers, parents and youth and do personal coaching. In this episode, the Bowlers and I discuss the importance of seeing our children's genius. So often as parents, we see their weaknesses or struggles. The dirty socks on the floor, the disrespectful attitude or the lack of motivation. When we focus on these negative things, it's more difficult to help our children to overcome them. But when we focus on the positive, powerful changes can start to happen. A simple tool that Kent and Amy teach is to write down 1 positive thing that you see your child do every day. You could write this in a journal or a phone app. But the key is to reflect on their actions from the day and find at least one good thing they have done. It could be as simple as a smile for a younger sibling, a thank you to a parent or as profound as completing a difficult assignment or stopping a bad habit. The act of pondering the positive will focus your mind on the good and soon, you'll be seeing more and more of the good that is within them. They call this the Proof Positive Journal.   Connect with Kent and Amy at www.revolutionaryheroes.com FB page - https://www.facebook.com/RevolutionaryFam FB group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/revolutionaryfamilies.forum Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/revolutionaryfamilies/ Get more resources for your intentional family culture by joining the Family Success Toolbox at http://www.homeandfamilyculture./ (www.homeandfamilyculture.com) or Text CULTURE to (917) 905-8801.

Jennifer Bogard is a Life Coach. She works with women who've experienced divorce mid-life. Jennifer helps them to stop living at the mercy of their emotions and emotional triggers so they can move forward to create a new life that they are proud of. No more survival mode or automatic default.   Jennifer became a certified life coach through The Life Coach School following the finalization of her own divorce in 2018. After a successful 15 year career in Human Resources her plan was to do Leadership Coaching - she NEVER wanted to become a poster child for divorce - but, God had other plans. She began to feel the nudge in this direction and now I cannot imagine doing anything else.   Keep in mind in this episode Jennifer's belief that there is no such thing as a broken home. "So often I hear from my clients that they 'never wanted their kids to have a broken home'. I don't believe there are broken homes. There are only broken people. People can be healed and made whole."   We also talked about thriving through divorce and stepping into future you now! When we are struggling so profoundly after divorce our children see us. They also feel the loss and the pain of divorce. Their world has been rocked too.   It's critical to understand that you can't give your children what you don't have. You must take your own healing seriously - and time is not a healer. Healing is an active process.   When a mom learns to manage her own mind and emotions, takes back her power and stops seeing herself as a victim, rebuilds her life on a foundation of self-love and self-worth, and casts a new vision for her life and family ---- THESE are the most valuable things she can provide for her children.  Divorced families are nearly 50% - this is a HUGE issue. When we see our homes as broken then we will live that out. We will see our families as less than and disadvantaged. When we see our family in that light so will our children.  Divorced families, and single parents have a strong ability and need to be intentional about the family culture they are creating. It starts with healing, and claiming that power. He has also authored The Addiction Nobody Will Talk About: How I Let My Pornography Addiction Hurt People and Destroy Relationships (2018) and co-author of He’s a Porn Addict…What Now? An Expert and Former Addict Answer Your Questions (2019). Since 2018, Joshua has given more interviews about pornography addiction than anybody in the world. To date, he has appeared on over 140 podcasts, television and radio shows using his wealth of research and personal story to promote the ideas that porn addiction spans all demographics and those with a problem should seek help before it’s too late. In 2017, Joshua launched RecoveringPornAddict.com. He has also contributed articles about recovery to TheFix.com and Recovery Today magazine and has developed and presents a porn addiction education lecture for churches, libraries and other groups. He will be giving his first TEDx Talk in Hartford, Conn., in December 2020. Now more than six years into recovery, Joshua still lives in Central Maine with his wife and two children. In this episode, Joshua and I discuss what dysfunctional beliefs and behaviors actually stem from pornography addiction. The culture that pornography exudes cuts deeply into our society and is impacting and deteriorating families in ways that you might not have expected if you don't have experience with it. Moral of the story: Pornography addiction is insidious and dangerous, but don't just shield your families from it. Education them about it. Create open communication around it. Awkwardness or shielding will only lead to shame which creates hiding the curiosity people naturally feel toward sexuality. He has consulted with some of the greatest thought leaders around the world across disciplines to discover the most powerful – and often surprising – models, ideas and secrets about effective leadership communication and leadership development within organizations. Krister uncovered universal communication secrets that utilize emotional intelligence to drive connection, growth and high performance for organizations and individuals alike. His upcoming book, tentatively titled 22 Talk SHIFTS, reveals how people can upgrade their language and improve their listening skills to inspire authentic followership at work and at home. By rooting their communication in emotional intelligence, and encouraging their managers to do the same, organizational leaders can unlock their full leadership potential to boost employee engagement and business growth. As an engaging keynote speaker and executive coach who has spoken to audiences on five continents, Krister shares unconventional leadership development insight unearthed on his travels, as well as wisdom gleaned from his own experience building one of the world’s largest family-owned technology companies. He fearlessly shares real-life stories with concrete, actionable steps to drive employee engagement, business growth and profitability by building better bosses. Krister Ungerböck is a leadership communication expert, keynote speaker, and former CEO of a global tech company. His work has appeared in NPR, Forbes, Inc., HR.com, Chief Executive, Recruiter.com and Entrepreneur. Prior to exiting corporate life at age 42, Krister was CEO of one of the largest family-owned software companies in the world. Despite seeing 3000% growth and employee engagement levels of 99% while CEO of a large software company -- Krister says his crowning achievement is learning how to be a compassionate leader of his family and co-parent with his ex-wife. His book 22 TALK SHIFTs: TOOLS TO TRANSFORM LEADERSHIP in Business, in Partnership and in Life helps people build better leaders and parents by shifting their words. The reality is that merely listening is enough to truly understand what people (especially children and spouses) are trying to communicate. Krister and I had a great conversation about how a few simple "talk shifts" can transform your relationships. The key, according to Krister, is to listen for needs, not words: When you listen beyond what people are saying and start listening for the needs that people are expressing, you’ll open yourself to a greater understanding of the motivations behind their actions. This helps us to build more compassion and less judgment as we listen. This is especially powerful when we use it to explore what might be behind the words, attitudes, and behaviors of people who frustrate or incite us. These simple talk shifts can break the cycle of strained communication within family units -- and strained relationships between children, spouses, and ex-spouses you co-parent with. 5:17 - Questioning the Dominant Culture with Jodi Chaffee

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2020 20:15

Welcome to the Family Culture Movement!  From this point forward my interviews will take on a new format. The main question I will ask of all my guests is, what needs to change in the dominant culture according to their area of expertise. I have interviews lined up through the end of the year with this question front and center in the discussion. I was inspired by a BYU Devotional from Jonathan Sandberg in his talk "Healing = Courage + Action + Grace." One part, in particular, stood out to me. He said, “…We have to develop the courage to live counter to the world’s dominant culture. You know what I am talking about—the culture in which money, sex, material possessions, fame, violent behavior, and carnal exploits are the currency for success. We live in a world in which appearance and approval are the keys to social status and power. In order to find healing, we have to develop the courage to say no to this dominant culture. I love what Morrie Schwartz said to Mitch Albom about living counter to the culture in the book Tuesdays with Morrie: “The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We’re teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it. Create your own. “A number of wonderful BYU devotionals have described the unhealthy culture of perceived perfectionism and how we have to fight against it. In two devotionals given last year, both Tyler J. Jarvis and Kristin L. Matthews encouraged us to be more accepting of our imperfections and to be more pleased with our best approximations, our bodies, our gifts, and our differences. I encourage you to reread their talks. “Listen to what President Thomas S. Monson said about having the courage to live by truth and to avoid the unhealthy dominant culture: “Let us have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle. Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God’s approval. . . . A moral coward is one who is afraid to do what he thinks is right because others will disapprove or laugh. “In her delightful way, author and devoted mother and grandmother Marjorie Pay Hinckley described the peace that comes when we refuse to compare and despair, as the ominant culture teaches: “Fifty was my favorite age. It takes about that long to learn to quit competing—to be yourself and settle down to living. It is the age I would like to be through all eternity! “In order to find healing, we have to develop the courage to avoid the culture that says there is only one acceptable way (i.e., a specific size, hair color, or ACT score) to be a good person or even a good Christian. There are many, many ways to be a righteous, positive influence in the world. If enough of us say no to the dominant culture, it will lose its power (see Joshua 1:9).” Get more resources for your intentional family culture by joining the Family Success Toolbox at www.homeandfamilyculture.com or Text CULTURE to (917) 905-8801.

When not reading, Kyle plays basketball, piano, and rappels. He recently published his first book, The Reading Rebellion. And because he precedes 5 siblings he spends a fair amount of time repressing their rebellions. Kyle and I talked about the power of reading to get the most out of the text. Many of us may not take the time and effort to read how Kyle calls rebelliously: asking questions, making the text, comparing notes, etc. In fact, when I was in school, reading was a burden and it was some thing to do to pass a test rather than for pleasure. Have you ever walked into the home of a friend and noticed that the atmosphere and dialogue of that family was just different? It can feel like you were transplanted into a different country! It’s easy to recognize different cultures when you step outside of your own cultural norms.  I never noticed the norms and narratives of my family until I found myself thousands of miles away to Hawai’i which felt like a different country to me. I was immersed in the culture there and fell in love with a people of a blended heritage that was as diverse as I could imagine. I met people from all over the world, and even learned to say hello in 50 different languages! This experience was my first glimpse into learning about family culture. While there, I met a lot of mixed-race couples. Most of them were amazing, but I met one couple that were at odds with each other because of their cultural differences. I didn’t know what to say to help them, but I knew that starting a family regardless of where you come from would mean blending cultures!  So I asked my friend, Sione from Tonga, what he thought about how to be successful since he and his wife were from different countries and had made it work for decades. I’ll never forget what he told me, and it has started me on this journey of discovering family culture: you forget about where you come from and adopt proven frameworks to form a new family culture.  Fast forward to the time when my husband, Michael and I started learning to navigate our own family culture. We set our goals and standards by the cultural norms we grew up with. We valued our education and faith. We worked toward graduation and meaningful occupations. The path we followed was the same one our parents and teachers claimed would lead to success. What surprised us was how little we were prepared for failure after following what we now see as a dysfunctional and outdated handbook. We found ourselves stranded at the height of the Great Recession in one of the most expensive regions of America with a mountain of student debt, a growing family, bills piling up, underemployment, and declined job applications.  Although we loved each other very much and our hearts were in the right place, the path we were on was undeniably a dead end. I started to get scared. Really scared. Michael and I fell into a deep depression. We felt hopeless and the way ahead of us was dark and difficult. How were we going to survive? I knew that families suffered under the weight of financial strain and irreconcilable differences. Would that become our family? What about our children? How could I raise them under a value system that taught us that we were worthless? Were they simply going to grow up in our footsteps and incur the same baggage?  No one could give us any answers. There was simply no script for facing failure or forging a new path away from the status quo. Our options were either to keep going to school, keep living above our means, or quit altogether. We were suffering from more than the financial strain. Michael felt a deep sense of failure as a provider. He did his best, but ended up working in a toxic environment for an industry he loathed. I grieved for him as I worked to keep our family intact. I had my own personal meltdown when in 2016 our house flooded and I felt like I hit my threshold for chaos in my life.  That’s when I decided that I was going to be proactive and seek out answers. I leaned on my education in lifespan development. I studied all the books I could get my hands on: personal development, marriage, parenting, education, and business. I decided to seek out information from experts and influencers who seemed to have figured it all out. I started this podcast, originally called The Home & Family Culture Podcast to discuss how families could challenge their cultural norms and redefine success for their own families. In my explorations, I learned that most of us simply do not question the ethos of the...
