Do you have a long-standing rule that you'll never break? Siobhan's was to only go on first dates in public places. When Carl asked her to his house for dinner for their debut date, the invite came after they'd talked almost nightly for over a month. She'd done her online sleuthing. She felt she knew a lot about him. She said “yes!” On our Season 4 premiere, we find out whether Siobhan was right to break her rule and all that took place after she did. My guest this week might sound a bit familiar, because you've almost definitely heard his voice before — even if you didn't realize it. Carl Bishop is the voice you hear on countless commercials. He's been the voice of hardware stores, he's warned you about medication side effects, he's sold shampoo and razors and laundry detergent and cars and pizza. When Carl got his start as a radio personality, many years ago, he avoided coming out for fear of the impact on his career. But as he found commercial success, and particularly as a video game voice actor, he decided it was time to overcome that fear. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, I want to let you know that I just posted a new video over on YouTube. It's about the most iconic gay couple of the 24th century, Garak and Bashir from Star Trek Deep Space 9 — and how fans were ultimately responsible for bringing these star-crossed lovers together. Check that out at YouTube.com/mattbaume — and head over to Patreon to see some bonus videos with extra stories that didn't make it into the final video. And just a quick reminder that I've got a little newsletter where I share sneak peeks at what I'm working on. Sign up for that at mattbaume.com.Also a big thanks to everyone who supports the Sewers of Paris on Patreon. And to everyone who's reviewed it on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.
This week the "3 Amigos of Retail" re-unite, as we welcome our special guest Carl Boutet for a discussion of "The Great Acceleration." When Carl first coined the term during Steve's virtual book launch event in April of 2020, little did we know how much it would catch on--and how prophetic it would turn out to be.Now we get a chance to discuss Carl's original thinking, how it's evolved and then dive into the highlights from his provocative new book. We dissect the "race to resilience," the key forces of the acceleration, retail's increasingly digitally-enabled future and what it might mean to live in a 50/50 physical/digital world (just don't call it "phygital"!). There's plenty of great insight and lots of lively banter. Then we wrap up the episode with our weekly segment “Remarkable or Forgettable?” where we give our hot takes on retail headlines, and deem them wow-worthy, best ignored or somewhere in between. This week's big stories include Lululemon's earnings (blockbuster), Nordstrom's earnings (lackluster), Warby Parker and Apple's defiance of the retail apocalypse, growing interest in the resale market and Amazon's big Prime Day announcement. Important Events February 22, 1892 Today is the birthday of the American lyrical poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay. Gardeners cherish Edna’s verses like: April comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers. I would blossom if I were a rose. I will be the gladdest thing under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one. However, Edna threw some shade at the very poisonous and rank-smelling Jimsonweed plant, the Thorn-apple, or Datura stramonium (“duh-too-ruh stra-MO-nee-um") in her poem “In the Grave No Flowers," writing: Here the rank-smelling Thorn-apple,—and who Would plant this by his dwelling? Well, it turns out the American botanist and geneticist Albert Francis Blakeslee was especially fond of Datura. In fact, one of Albert’s friends once joked that in his life, Albert enjoyed two great love affairs — with his wife Margaret and with Datura, and in that order. Not surprisingly, Edna’s verse riled Albert, and in response, he sent her a letter: "I thought I would write to you, and … answer... your question by saying that I would plant this by my dwelling and have done so for the last thirty years rather extensively. It turns out that this plant (Datura stramonium) is perhaps the very best plant with which to discover principles of heredity." Now, Datura's common name, Jimsonweed, is derived from Jamestown’s colonial settlement, where British soldiers were given a salad made with boiled “Jamestown weed” or Jimsonweed. For days after eating the greens, instead of quelling the colonial uprising known as the Bacon rebellion, the British soldiers turned fools, blowing feathers in the air, running about naked, and acting entirely out of their minds. Datura’s other common names, the thorn apple or the devil’s apple, offer a clue that Datura is a nightshade plant. Those sinister names came about because nightshades were historically thought to be evil. In contrast, the Algonquin Indians and other ancient peoples regarded Datura as a shamanistic plant, and they smoked Datura to induce intoxication and hallucinations or visions. The etymology of the name Datura comes from an early Sanskrit word meaning “divine inebriation.” February 22, 1932 Today is the anniversary of the death of the Scottish surgeon Charles Walker Cathcart. During WWI, Charles and his peer Isaac Balfour wrote a paper where they advised following the common German practice of using sphagnum moss to treat wounded soldiers. After this article, sphagnum moss was robustly harvested for wound dressings for the British Army. An article published by the Smithsonian Magazine called “How Humble Moss Healed the Wounds of Thousands in World War I” shared the history of the use of moss: “In ancient times, Gaelic-Irish sources wrote that warriors in the battle of Clontarf used moss to pack their wounds. Moss was also used by Native Americans, who lined their children’s cradles and [used] it as a type of natural diaper. It continued to be used sporadically when battles erupted, including during the Napoleonic and Franco-Prussian wars. Lieutenant-Colonel E.P. Sewell of the General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, wrote approvingly that, “It is very absorbent, far more than cotton wool, and has remarkable deodorizing power.” Lab experiments around the same time vindicated his observations: Sphagnum moss can hold up to 22 times its own weight in liquid, making it twice as absorbent as cotton.” In response to Charles’ advice, communities organized moss drives. A December 19, 1916 article from the Caspar Star-Tribune out of Caspar Wyoming was simply titled: Gather Moss For War Bandages. It read, “Thousands of women and children, unable to perform other war works, are daily combing the misty hills of Scotland and the Irish west coast for moss for absorbent dressings. Recently they filled an order for 20,000 bandages. The moss is wrapped in cotton gauze and applied to open wounds.” Unearthed Words When the six-year-old Dorothy L. Sayers moved to her new home at Bluntisham rectory in the Fens in January 1897: As the fly turned into the drive, she cried out with astonishment, “Look, Auntie, look! The ground is all yellow, like the sun.” This sudden splash of gold remained in her memory all her life. The ground was carpeted with early flowering aconites. Later, her father told her the legend that these flowers grew in England only where Roman soldiers have shed their blood, and Bluntisham contained the outworks of a Roman camp. So as early as this, and as young as she was, her imagination was caught by ancient Rome. — Roy Vickery, author and Curator of Flowering Plants at the London Natural History Museum, A Dictionary of Plant Lore, Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis “YER-anth-iss hy-uh-MAY-lis”) Grow That Garden Library Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine by Andrew Chevallier This book came out in 2016, and the subtitle is 550 Herbs and Remedies for Common Ailments. Pehr met Carl at the University of Uppsala, where Carl was his professor. Early on, Carl dubbed Pehr his "most beloved pupil," and he even gave Pehr a nickname; the Vulture. Carl came up with the moniker after observing that Pehr had an intuitive way of finding plants and observing the most minute details of plant specimens. When Pehr wrote his dissertation called “On the Buds of Trees,” his observation skills were put to use. Pehr's paper featured detailed descriptions of plants in bud in the offseason instead of in full flower during the summer. This unique perspective enabled people to identify many species in the leafless winter - something that easily confounds plant lovers - even today. When Carl felt Pehr could be a role model, tutor, and a friend to his son, he offered Pehr the chance to live with his family. Hence, Pehr continued his studies while living with the Linneaus family. After graduating, Carl recommended Pehr for an opportunity in Madrid, and this is how Pehr learned Spanish and befriended many Spanish botanists who called him Pedro. After two years of collecting over 1,400 specimens in Spain, Pehr secured a paid position on the Royal Botanical Expedition to South America with a mission of learning to cultivate a particular variety of cinnamon thought to be superior to the standard variety. By 1754, Pehr was botanizing in Venezuela with a small team that included two doctors and two artists. Pehr was just 27 years old when he died of malaria on the banks of the Caroní River at a Mission outpost on this day in 1756. He was buried beneath an orange tree. By the end of the year, over half of the expedition’s men would be dead from disease compounded by hunger and fatigue. When Linnaeus shared the news about Pehr with a friend, he wrote, “The great Vulture is dead.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
Joining the JHU Press Podcast today are Dr. Rob Shumaker and Professor Carl Jones. Dr. Rob Shumaker is an evolutionary biologist who currently serves at the President and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo. Professor Carl Jones is a global hero whose innovative techniques have saved numerous species from extinction and shaped the future of the conservation world. Having spent the majority of his career on Mauritius — an island nation in the Indian Ocean — he has pioneered ways to conserve the island’s wildlife and ecosystems. When Carl landed in Mauritius more than 40 years ago, there were only four Mauritius kestrels left — they were the world’s rarest bird at the time. He spent the next decade restoring the kestrel population, and now there are more than 400 in the wild. But the work didn’t end with kestrels. He has led the recovery efforts for nearly a dozen of the nation’s other wildlife, spanning birds, reptiles and mammals. In 2016, Carl was awarded the Indianapolis Prize, often dubbed the “Nobel prize” of conservationism. The Indianapolis Prize is a biennial prize awarded by the Indianapolis Zoo to individuals for "extraordinary contributions to conservation efforts" affecting one or more animal species. Saving Endangered Species: Lessons in Wildlife Conservation from Indianapolis Prize Winners is a new book edited by Rob Shumaker and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Carl Jones is among the Indianapolis Prize winners who contributed to the book, sharing their stories of conservation work. Recently, Rob sat down with his friend Carl to catch up and hear more about the incredible work he has done - and how much there is left to do - in saving the earth's wildlife.

They both climbed into his car and buckled in. Myra taking the passenger back seat so she could look at Carl. He turned on the radio, it was tuned to the local NPR station. The station was playing its jazz program and normally Carl would have listened, but the fear of hearing Grover Bechet drove him to put on a podcast that he was listening to. “Papa can we listen to the radio, I don’t like this podcast it’s too scary,” said Myra. He knew that some song by Grover was going to play, so he turned on the oldies channel. He thought to himself, that the oldies channel used to mean music from the 50’s and 60’s, but know it was music he had grown up with which made him feel that much older. Myra seemed pleased with his selection, at least she was not asking for jazz. He thought about the irony of that thought, his ex-wife was not aa fan of jazz and now he was avoiding it because of the curse. Traffic was fairly light as it was near lunch time. They pulled up to the buffet pizza place and saw that it had just opened about thirty minutes ago. They would be one of the first customers of the day so Carl knew that the food would at least be fresh. When they entered there was two booths occupied out of forty. Carl chose one where he could face the front entrance. “Can I play some arcade games when we get done eating,” asked Myra? “Oh most certainly, I used to be great at arcade games when I was a kid, maybe about your age. I would bug my folks all weekend long to take me to the mall arcade until they wilted and took me,” said Carl. The each went to the buffet line and carefully grabbed the first slices off the pizzas displayed. Myra looked up at Carl when they reached the dessert pizza, pleading with her eyes for permission. He nodded and took two pieces for himself to show he was a kid at heart. They both devoured their food, ignoring the blaring TV showing modern day cartoons. “If you are truly done, we can go to the arcade, but don’t tell me you are hungry in five minutes,” joked Carl. “I am done, just going to go to the bathroom, “replied Myra. With that she got up from the booth and went towards the bathroom. Carl got up and refilled their sodas and sat back down I the booth watching what passed for cartoons these days. A few more tables and booths filled up as he waited from Myra to come back from the bathroom. It had been ten minutes when he started panicking. He stood up from the booth to look around the restaurant. The busser came by to take their plates away and left the soda glasses. “Did you see the girl I came in with, she is nine years old, has brown hair to her shoulders, her name is Myra? She went to the bathroom about ten minutes ago and hasn’t come back,” said Carl excitedly. “I didn’t see you come in with a girl sir,” said the busser. Carl started sweating and getting dizzy. He sat down and the lights in the restaurant seemed to dim. “I can have one of the female staff look in the girls bathroom for you, what’s her name again?” “Myra, I would appreciate that, thank you. I am just going to sit here,” replied Carl. The lights were getting progressively dimmer and the noise from the TV was giving him a migraine. The busser went quickly to get his manager. A few minutes passed and the female manager came to the table. “Sir are you feeling okay, do we need to call an ambulance,” asked the manager? “I am okay, my girl, her name is Myra, she is nine years old. She went to the bathroom and hasn’t come back yet. I am just really worried about her. Can you check on her please,” Carl asked and was beginning to feel the familiar effect of one of his episodes. He could not look away from the TV he knew he would become unresponsive. The manager headed to the female bathroom and called out Myra’s name. When Carl did not hear Myra’s voice calling back, he felt the episode getting worse and soon he would slip away. This time it felt like it had in the past where he would be difficult to rouse. Just then he heard the manager yell out. “Hey give me a hand, the girl is in the stall, I think she passed out. Sir can you help me please,” said the manager to Carl. He instantly snapped back into reality and ran to the bathroom. He found Myra, sitting on the toilet, pants down and her head leaning against the side of the stall. Her eyes were open, and her jaw was slack. He pushed the manager aside and cleaned up Myra. As he helped get her back together, he thought that this is probably what he used to look like to others, no wonder his brother and Cheryl hounded him about going to the doctor and following orders. He whispered into her ears “I am sorry baby girl, I am sorry, we will get you back home soon. Shhhhh Shhhh, we will get you all taken care of.” He turned to the manager, “she just had an episode, like an epileptic seizure just not as bad as that. She will be okay, I’m taking her home right now.” Slowly Myra woke up from the episode like Carl had so many times in the past. Her eyes blinked and her face became red from embarrassment. Her hands went straight to her legs to make sure she had on clothes and she began to lightly whimper into Carl’s shoulder. “I’m okay Papa, I am okay, this happens sometimes. I didn’t want you to worry. Can we still get frozen yogurt,” Myra asked? “We can grab some on the way home, you bet girl. Let’s go ahead and get you home. I thought I lost you there for a minute,” said Carl. “Are you two okay, I mean you don’t look to good yourself sir,” asked the manager? “We are going to be fine, thank you for looking into the bathroom for her, she just had an episode, we just need some rest. Thank you,” said Carl as he picked up Myra and started to take her to the exit. “I can walk Papa, really I am fine,” said Myra. “Let me get you outside and we can walk around,” replied Carl. The manager walked them through the restaurant and opened the door for them to go outside. She ran back and brought some wet towels to put on the back of Myra’s neck. “Are you sure you two are fine, because we can call an ambulance and get either you or her to the hospital,” asked the manager? “No really we are fine now, thank you. We have had an exciting couple of days and I think we need to just grab some frozen yogurt and get this girl watching some cartoons or national geographic or something,” said Carl reassuringly. Carl handed the towels back to the manager and she walked them both to his car. He pulled out of the parking lot more cautiously than usual and headed for their next stop, the frozen yogurt shop. “So what kind of yogurt are you looking to get, which one is your favorite,” asked Carl? “Peach is my favorite, thank you,” replied Myra. Carl noticed that she spoke in a more docile manner like she did when he was first introduced to her. She seemed much livelier when she woke up this morning and everything turned on its head. Maybe things were turning around, and she would be more of herself, whoever she really was. He knew his doctor would have a fit if he found out that Carl was driving after almost having his own episode much less a nine year old girl having one, but there was no one to drive either of them back home. He was feeling better as he turned on the air conditioning and let it blow on himself and Myra. He looked back at her and she seemed to get perkier as they got closer to the yogurt shop. Once there he parked the car close to the entrance. “Are you feeling up to going in or should I just grab and go for the both of us. I really don’t want to leave you in a running car, but if you are not up to it,” asked Carl? “No I can go in, I will be fine. Besides I want to put the sprinkles on it and the peach jam,” replied Myra. “Okay babe, you tell me if you are not feeling it and we will get out of there fast, besides we are going to take these home with us and watch more cartoons, maybe head over to the park,” said Carl. They both walked in a bit uneasy but manageable. Myra grabbed a big bucket for Carl and a medium sized bucket for herself, She went straight to the blue raspberry dispenser and started pouring in about half way full of that flavor and then switched over to a coffee chocolate blend for the rest of the cup. She handed it to Carl and filled her own bucket with peach frozen yogurt. When she had filled it she was at the topping buffet and put only on spoonful of sprinkles and a good sized drizzle of peach jam over her bucket. Carl went straight for the chunky chocolate candy pieces and drenched the whole bucket in chocolate hardening syrup. When they stepped up the counter to get their yogurt weighted and paid, Myra grabbed lids, spoons and napkins for both of them. “Looks like you got a great helper there sir,” said the cashier. “She is the best, thank you. Just having a lazy day today,” replied Carl. Myra opened the door to the exit and opened up the car doors so Carl could put down the treats on the driver side back seat. They both climbed in his car and went back to the apartment. Once there and still quiet they walked up to his apartment and went straight to the kitchen table. Carl turned on the TV which was still on the music channel, when Grover Bechet came on. Vanessa from Kent has asked for our advice with her boyfriend Carl who she thinks is still way too close to his college girlfriend. Vanessa says this girl is not just all over his social media all the time bringing up "the old days" but sometimes shows up to parties they go to, or even restaurants, and sometimes it's Carl that has invited her and she feels like it's a "Throuple". When Carl comes on he says, yeah, he and Shelby are still close, but they've been friends since their days as Drum Majors at UW, which is a really tight community, and they still have a lot of friends in common. He says they are not like "real" exes because they are better as pals than they ever were as boyfriend-girlfriend, and he doesn't think its fair he should have to stop being friends - he loves Vanessa and she needs to just stop worrying. The P1's debate this one pretty hard - can you really ever just stay "friends" with your ex? Or is Vanessa overreacting? And is the real problem that Carl is a Husky and not a Coug?

The Independent Characters - A Warhammer 40k Podcast | Radio
Episode 194 of The Independent Characters is a bit of a train wreck. We aren't going to lie. When Carl was going to be doing so much traveling in September, we expected that he would be able to fit in a couple of interviews. Justin Hill, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, John French, maybe even Robin Cruddace. However, delayed flights, jetlag, expired Drivers licenses... all kinds of things conspired against him to toss those plans right out the window. In the end we wound up with a great interview (with mediocre sound quality in Bugman's Bar) with Justin Hill and then an extensive Hobby Progress and rambling intro section with Jody and Carl. This is NOT our strongest showing, but we do think it IS a fun episode. It's just not particularly well structured. Our next episode will have us back on track and back on schedule. No more traveling and just a lot of gaming. But until then we hope this episode tides you over and you enjoy it as much as we did recording it! The Ruff Rider Canine Vehicle Safety Harness was first envisioned by Carl Goldberg in Boulder Co. While traveling down a windy mountain road at five mph, a car driving up the mountain, was traveling on the wrong side of the road. When Carl slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision, his 125-pound chocolate lab was ejected from the back seat and thrown through the windshield landing on the hood of the car. After this frightening incident, a new windshield, and a trip to the veterinarian, Goldberg realized the threat that an unrestrained dog presents in a moving vehicle, and he decided to do something about it. Not only was his dog's life in danger, but the thought that his daughter, or another passenger, could have been severely injured by the dog was too much to bear. He went to his local pet and outdoor stores to see what was available but found only inferior products that were too flimsy and did not fit properly. With an inspiration to make vehicles a safer place for dogs and the people riding with them, Goldberg consulted veterinary orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joseph “Doc Joe” Evans at the Nederland Co. Veterinary Hospital. The result; Ruff Rider Roadie is orthopedically sound and ergonomically correct. The design received an 18 claim Broad Based Patent in 1996. Later Goldberg was awarded 2 Additional Patents. Ruff Rider Roadie is hands-down, the strongest, safest canine vehicle/climbing harness in the world. The product can be found at Petland stores across the country Website: www.ruffrider.com Facebook: http://on.fb.me/19lZAfK Instagram: @maxtheoldeenglishbulldogge
