Humans aren't the only species that use tools, many animals do. Our closest relatives, the great apes, have long been known for their intelligence and ability to manipulate objects in their environment. Among the great apes, orangutans stand out for their complex tool use, which may hold important clues about how early human technologies evolved. A recent Outlook article authored by Dr. Robert Shumaker and Dr. Christopher Martin, both of the Indianapolis Zoo, delves into the existing research into ways that orangutans use stone tools, exploring the cognitive processes behind this behavior and what it can tell us about human evolution.

Scientists confirm rediscovery of ‘tap-dancing’ trapdoor spider not seen for nearly a century

An elusive 'tap-dancing' spider species that has been lost to science for almost 100 years has been rediscovered amongst leaf litter on its home turf. The Fagilde trapdoor spider was found recently in an area near the same small northern Portuguese town that it is named after. Since it was last spotted in 1931, scientists have been unsure of its whereabouts—until now. The Fagilde trapdoor spider has been doing a good job of staying out of the public eye. It's not been scientifically documented since it was first described by an entomologist—an expert in insects—in Portugal in 1931. Now an expedition team, led by the Global Center for Species Survival at the Indianapolis Zoo in the United States, says it has confirmed with DNA analysis the species' survival. Expedition leader Sergio Henriques says the rediscovery is an important first step towards conservation: "Well, this is an important rediscovery of a species because it hadn't been seen in so long. And if a species isn't found, if we don't know if it even exists, there's nothing we can do about protecting it. So it is a first step. It is the main step, really, to do any conservation action is to know that the species is still in existence. If it was gone, there was nothing we could do. So it brings us hope towards what can we do next to ensure it keeps alive and it keeps thriving 100 years from now." Trapdoors are a family of spiders found on several continents and are known to dig a burrow and cover the entrance with a hinged lid like a trapdoor. According to the team, trapdoor spiders are shy and generally stay in their burrows, using spider senses and silk to determine whether the vibrations of animals outside are potential predators or prey. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Excuse the creepy topics, but isn't it Halloween season? Appropriate, then, to time-travel to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when, as our guest puts it, "the city of Indianapolis had all the makings of a perfect horror movie set, the largest saw factory in the world, acres of stockyards and slaughterhouses, and the specter of ceilings dripping with something that appeared to be blood but on closer inspection would turn out to be catsup." With the multiple slaughterhouses and pork-packing businesses, the king of the heap for about 100 years was unquestionably Kingan & Co., which had a five-story plant as part of a massive operation that encompassed 27 acres spanning both sides of the White River west of downtown Indy. Ironically, thousands of hogs once were slaughtered daily at the enterprise not far from the site today of the Indianapolis Zoo.

This week, we begin with a disturbing medical mystery. Since the start of the year, almost 200 children worldwide have fallen ill with hepatitis—or liver inflammation—without any apparent cause. Most of the children are under five, and nearly half of the cases were in the UK. Vic Gill asks clinical epidemiologist Deepti Gurdasani, Queen Mary University of London, what we do and don't know about these rare cases. Also on the programme, with a huge tidal range, Wales and the west coast of England have become the focal point for a new generation of tidal power plans. So, is the tidal energy revolution finally happening? Roger Falconer, Emeritus Professor of Water and Environmental Engineering at Cardiff University, and Andrew Scott, CEO of Orbital Marine Power, which has demonstrated a working tidal stream turbine - called O2 - off Orkney, share their insights. And fancy eating an insect burger? Or how about adding seaweed smoothies or mycoprotein meatballs to your diet? Fellow BBC science correspondent Helen Briggs shares how lab-grown proteins could make our diets much kinder to the planet. And a recent study has found that a fifth of reptile species are at risk of extinction. Conservation scientist and study co-author Monika Bohm, Indianapolis Zoo in the US, tells us how, despite the gloomy findings, she remains hopeful.
