Hello! There's a sleighful of fun festive episodes of Helen's podcast the Allusionist over at the theallusionist.org and in the podplaces - episodes about Santa/Father Christmas/St Nick's many names, meaty greetings cards, what to do when kids' letters to Santa are delivered to you, and how to write a festive hit for a very Covid Christmas. But, right here in your AMT feed are a couple of Festivelusionist highlights: Winterval, about the term that unwillingly became a byword for the War On Christmas; and How The Dickens Stole Christmas, explaining why Christmas is so damn Dickensian. Also, we have a lot of delightful AMT festive episodes on the feed - seek out ones released in Decembers - as well as our Christmas album, available from answermethisstore.com/albums! We answered so many seasonal questions, about the Spanish shitting log tradition, the cause of Rudolph's red nose, how come there's a Flintstones Christmas episode though they lived long before Christ was born, and how artificial Christmas trees were begat by bog brushes. Merry Winterval to one and all!
In the final episode, Portentous gives her bridal speech, gets us up to date with what her family, friends and enemies are up to, details the slight hitch to her Winterval nuptuals and informs us all of her next adventure. To the future! Have a hip flask.

READ: Luke 2:1-3 NLT 'At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census.' I am delighted that in our highly secular society Christmas still has a very secure place. No one could possibly miss the fact that it is Christmas! All attempts to replace Christmas with a festival such as Winterval have failed miserably. But even so we have a problem because the birth of Jesus has become inextricably tied together with Father Christmas and Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer and other imaginary characters. It’s really important that we recognize that Jesus’ birth was a historic event, and here Dr Luke gives us the facts. Jesus was born during the long reign of Augustus Caesar who ruled the Roman Empire from 27BC to 14AD. During his reign he established the Pax Romana which led to a period of relative peace for more than two centuries. He ruled the Empire tightly and one of his initiatives was to hold a census and Quirinius, as governor of Syria, was given responsibility for covering the area of Judaea. Luke gives us these very specific details because he wants the world to know that God broke into human history in a decisive way by sending his son to be the Saviour of the World. If Jesus was not a historical figure then the whole of Christianity crashes to the floor. This is what is known as the miracle of the incarnation – of God taking on flesh and becoming part of our world through his son, Jesus. As we enjoy our Christmas celebrations we are marking the fact that Jesus entered into the rough and tumble of normal human life. You might have thought that Jesus, as the Son of God, would have been given special treatment as he entered the world – but no. Jesus entered the turbulent Roman world and faced all the indignities, regulations and limitations of a country living under occupation. This is no fairy story! Truly God had come to live on earth. QUESTION: What do you find most amazing about the Christmas story? PRAYER: Loving Father thank you that you loved us so much that you were willing to send Jesus to our confused, cynical and sinful world. Amen.
The usual canon of Christmas songs may not really fit people's moods in this year 2020, when I'm not sure a lot of us are feeling all that holly jolly. So I drafted in singer and songwriter Jenny Owen Youngs and we wrote a festive song that is suitable for 2020. Content note: there are swears. Several of them. Jenny Owen Youngs makes music - find it at jennyowenyoungs.com - and podcasts - Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. She’s @jennyowenyoungs on Twitter and Instagram. Martin Austwick provided music, backing vocals and linguistic analysis. Hear Martin’s own songs at palebirdmusic.com or on Spotify, and he’s @martinaustwick on Twitter and Instagram. He also composed the music for the kids’ science podcast Maddie’s Sound Explorers. There’s more about this episode at theallusionist.org/mistletoe. We’ve got Winterval, a jolly romp through a portmanteau that sparked another war on the war on Christmas; How The Dickens Stole Christmas, about how Charles Dickens became a festive trend-setter; Dear Santa, about how a load of letters to Santa got delivered to a couple in Manhattan, who set out to answer them; and Xmas Man, about the many names for Santa/Father Christmas/St Nick, and deathy and meaty Victorian Christmas cards. Despite the weather, there's no shortage of things to do on Fort Wayne's downtown riverfront, thanks to Promenade Park's new weeknight activity series. From now through February, the Park Foundation Pavillion will provide a warm and welcoming space for old fashioned family games, dance promenading and a variety of musical and spoken word entertainment. Meanwhile, the park will also be hosting a special Winter Cozy as part of this year's Winterval celebration. Earlier this week, WBOI's Julia Meek sat down with the park's event coordinator, Jen Brown, to talk about the fun to be had in these cold and snowy winter months. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo” by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Keegan Lee and Brittany Smith. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship and Mikaela Veltum.
Kitti will be in The Book Centre Waterford for several dates throughout Winterval, telling stories for adults and kids alike, and playing her ukelele for good measure. She joined Mary in studio ahead of that.

It's Christmas! so, this time, we're irking the Daily Mail readers by actually not doing much to do with Christmas at all (Let's call it a Winterval special just to annoy them even more!). It's our end of the year best of 2018 spectacular! We'll be counting down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus discussing our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year which didn't come out in 2018. To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year! Bands featured in this episode include Anaal Nathrakh, АИГЕЛ, The Atlas Moth, Author & Punisher, Big Russian Boss, Brooke Bentham, Church Of The Cosmic Skull, Clever Girl, The Common Cold, Corrosion Of Conformity, Dresden Dolls, Eels, Brian Eno/Kevin Shields, Epic45, Failure, Forest Swords, Four Stroke Baron, Gene, Ghost, Grouper, Half Man Half Biscuit, Ho99o9, Khruangbin, Laibach, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Metric, Malcolm Middleton, Mogwai, Neurosis, Pale Waves, Peaness, Josh T. "The only thing that stops him drinking is people having their need for firewood sated." We'll be honest: this one got away from us. Every podcast has a Lost Scooby-Doo Episode and this is ours. This week, is it unreasonable to buy firewood cash-in-hand from Beer-Money Billy? How can we appoint a specialist barber law solicitor if the apocalypse happens while we're at the barbers? Is it unreasonable of Scrappy-Doo to sell his family's ancient pieces of furniture? Should Christmas jumpers be banned in favour of Winterval jumpers? And is it unreasonable to expose young children to that weird CG Scooby-Doo from the live-action Scooby-Doo film?

This hour, Third Coast’s take on the holidays. No Santa By John Biewen for Scene on Radio (2015) A father turns on a recorder while tucking in his 7-year-old, having no idea he’s about to capture a poignant growing-up moment in his son’s life. There’s a word that has become shorthand for ‘the war on Christmas’ with a side of ‘political correctness gone mad’: Winterval. It began in November 1998. Newspapers furiously accused Birmingham City Council of renaming Christmas when it ran festive events under the name ‘Winterval’. The council’s then-head of events Mike Chubb explains the true meaning of Winterval. For more information about this episode, visit http://theallusionist.org/winterval. Ding dong, merrily high - Steve's pants are wet and minging. Don't worry. He just got a bit over-excited on last week's Star Wars podcast. But before Steve worked himself up into that state, you can listen to his usual mildly-subdued-self as he hosted our Christmas special podcast, recorded the week before he exploded in a fit of fan-geekery over The Force Awakens. Joining him in our festive celebrations during this most unholy Winterval and non-religion-specific season are Owen Hughes, Andrew Brooker and Brian Plank. As is tradition, we start off with a Christmassy quiz - quite possibly the worst quiz we've had on the podcast all year. Possibly ever. But moods are soon lifted as the team run through which Christmas movies they've been watching over the holiday period. In lieu of any main releases to talk about, we have a special triple bill where each member of the crew pick their films of Christmas past (favourite first watch of a non-2015 film during this year), Christmas present (favourite 2015... There was a chance that Ste was nearly not going to make the recording of this show. He claims it was because the train was late, but did he stop for a pasty? And if so had it cooled enough for it to still be VAT free? Or did he mean the other type of pasty? At least FOTS Leo Tan managed to make it on time to the show and he came all the way from America. How is he finding it across the pond? Has he offended the whole country yet or just their videogame journalists? All will be revealed in this episode. We also have a new feature in Press XY to Continue, Derek Williams provides us with another Free Market Economy and we explain the reasoning behind the tweet we made to Daniel Nye Griffiths during the show. Unfortunately while we were recording this episode Polygon broke into our houses and took photos of where we 'game', expect to see that bit under the stairs where Simon's Wii used to live on their website soon :( This will be the last episode before Christmas so enjoy the Winterval (sorry Ann)!
