It's fish fry time, and that means Fish Fry Friday! I love fish fries! The crisp crust of fried haddock, the tender flake of baked cod, and the banquet of side dishes -- french fries, mac & cheese, cole slaw, stewed tomatoes! -- and a sweet delight at the end. It's even better when it's a community meal, served by volunteers and enjoyed at long tables with folks you may or may not know (and with the desserts being a huge spread of homemade wonders to choose from). So I did an episode on them. What's in a fish fry, why we do them, how they started, and where to find one locally (Don't miss the links below!). There's an interview with the two people who run the huge fish fry at St. John The Evangelist in Bellefonte, where they take us behind the scenes to tell us how and why it works. (You guys are crazy about french fries!). And I've got some interesting fish fry facts along the way, like the Irish monks who managed to come up with an excuse to eat roast goose during Lent, and the broad history of fish fries in America. What else? There's a Lock Haven follow-up: a visit to the Main Street Grill for dinner and cocktails. And not to bury it, but big news on the sponsor I've been hinting about! Here's a hint: listen for news on the Hoppy Valley Brewers Fest. Next episode? We're finally back to town profiles, as I visit Mansfield, and interview Jarrod York at Yorkholo Brewing. Two weeks! Until then? Tomorrow is fish fry Friday, go get some! Remember: TELL YOUR FRIENDS! After leaving the place he'd help establish as a national wrestling power, Gray Simons spent five seasons at Indiana State as the Sycamores' head coach prior to taking over his first “big school” - the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. While sports-crazy, Tennessee was still new to the wrestling game. Gray Simons and a talented recruiter named Steve Gaydosh wouldn't just change Tennessee's fortunes - they would turn Tennessee into a waking giant in college wrestling. As programs started to fall around them, Tennessee held strong, as did its athletes, overcoming some severe adversity on their way to stardom. Gray Simons and company were building something special on Rocky Top. Three times he won the University Division title in the NCAA and as a junior and senior was voted the outstanding competitor. Mat Town's Championship Era looks at Gray Simons' return to Lock Haven.
Gray Simons finished his college career by setting a new standard in college wrestling. Seven national championships, college wrestling's first four-time title winner in any division to go along with two Olympic appearances. The Olympic disappointment didn't last long as Gray Simons returned to Mat Town to take over its proud wrestling program. Simons was primed to lead the program to new heights, taking over as the program's head coach after his distinguished competitive career. But could Simons build the Bald Eagles into a winner against the nation's heavyweights or would something else stand in his way? Las Vegas is on everyone's mind who follows the world of Division I wrestling and that also means me. There's a bunch of Vegas-related content in the newsletter today, so again, you can find out how to get that daily at the end of the show. I was on the mic Thursday here in the Twin Cities - more on that in a bit, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the day's results in and around college wrestling. Right now, if you hear any banging around, it's because I'm getting a new furnace installed this morning. Yup. Thankfully before it his absolute zero here this winter. Our installer used to wrestle, too. Links: Did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. As to the aforementioned Minnesota match, Division III's top-ranked team, Augsburg, blanked No. 25 Loras 46-0 at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg won four matchups between ranked wrestlers, including returning national champion Sam Stuhl earning an 11-2 major decision over No. 13 Jalen Schropp at 141 pounds. Top-ranked heavyweight Tyler Kim and 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann picked big bonus victories - Kim with the fall and BSO (his name is too long to keep repeating) with the tech. Other scores around Division III saw Carthage beat Elmhurst 29-15, and Central, that's it, just Central, pushed past Augustana (Ill.) 36-9. UW-Stevens Point trounced UW-Oshkoh (B'Gosh) 40-18. Augustana did beat Simpson (Iowa) The only Division I match of the night featured a pair of transitional programs as Bellarmine heads out to Missouri and beat Lindenwood 35-7. There were some exciting duals in Division II, including Kutztown winning the last five bouts to pull away past Seton Hill 34-15. Both of Kutztown's ranked wrestlers - No. 11 Dalton Gimbor at 165 and third-ranked Matthew Weinberg at 184 - won. Gimbor beat Kane Kettering while Weinberg picked up a forfeit. I hate forfeit. Millersville beat East Stroudsburg 23-19. Colorado School of Mines won the last six weights to top New Mexico Highlands 31-13. Colorado Mesa beat rival Western Colorado 24-17. Davenport beat NAIA Cleary 37-12. Down south, Coker blanked Bluefield State (that's in West Virginia), while Belmont Abbey beat Emory & Henry 48-3. Emory & Henry is transitioning from Division III to Division II. In the NAIA, Ottawa beat Avila 35-13. On the women's side, Grand View beat Central Methodist 27-18, Cedar Crest beat Alvernia 32-16 in the school's first ever home women's wrestling dual. Sioux Falls new women's program improved to 2-0 with a win over Minot State 39-13 and Lock Haven beat Elmira 35-12. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. From 1961-1964, Gray Simons was one of the best wrestlers in the World. Heading into his junior season at Lock Haven, Simons had already won two NAIA national championships and an NCAA championship, beating Olympian Dick Wilson in the finals as a sophomore. After his trip to Rome saw him come away from the Olympics without a medal, Simons continued his tear through college wrestling. Would injuries or wrestlers from more dominant programs stop him from his place in wrestling history? Would old friends and teammates be the ones who would knock Simons from his path? Find out in the second installment of Seven. Seven is the story of one of America's great wrestling minds - a stellar athlete with two Olympic appearances - and a dynamic technical mind - delivering next-level techniques learned at Granby and tweaked for the college wrestling world. In this riveting 34th episode of the Athletor Podcast, we sit down with Joey Ghione, the dynamic head coach steering the ship at the Silver State Wrestling Club based in Reno, Nevada. His journey, marked by gritty perseverance and a deep-rooted passion for wrestling, is nothing short of inspiring. In this episode, we trace Joey's intricate backstory that saw him migrating from the heartlands of Jersey to the vibrant confines of Lockhaven, PA. It's here that Joey delves deep, opening up about a period of his life where he stepped away from wrestling, only to be drawn back with an even fiercer determination. This rediscovered zeal propelled him to achieve the remarkable feat of becoming a DIII All-American, a testament to his resilience and dedication. Yet, Joey's story is far from a straightforward tale of success. In our conversation, he shares the rocky roads he had to navigate, the hurdles he had to overcome as he transitioned away from the sport. As the guiding force behind the Silver State Wrestling Academy, Joey is sculpting the future of the sport, one wrestler at a time. Through his guidance, he's fostering an environment where athletes can hone their skills, cultivate their passion, and aspire for greater heights in the wrestling realm.
I love the ridges and valleys of Central Pennsylvania! This episode is all about one of those valleys: Nittany Valley, which runs northeast from Bellefonte up toward Lock Haven. It's a long groove, filled brim to brim with farms, little towns like Zion, and Hublersburg, and Mingoville, It's also home to Blonde Bistro Brew Works, the Hublersburg Inn, Goot Essa cheese makers, and Mark's Custom Meats, a custom butcher. I visited three of these places, and got an interview with Goot Essa's John Esh, his first podcast interview, and my first Amish interview. I've got information for you on three area Oktoberfest celebrations, and one uniquely central Pennsylvania celebration, Goose Day in the Juniata Valley. Goose Day is like nothing else, and I'm going to get into it this year. Join me! In two weeks...okay, now it's time for the coffee story! From the legendary Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia, the path to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Elliot Gray Simons included some unbelievable feats of wrestling, but it didn't start off with immediate accolades. Simons would win a state championship for Hall of Fame coach Billy Martin before enrolling at tiny Lock Haven State Teachers College. There, Simons would dominate the college wrestling world, becoming the first wrestler in history to win four NAIA national titles and was the first to win four collegiate national championships across any division. He would also win three NCAA titles, battling with some of the titans of the sport, including future members of the Hall of Fame. Lock Haven is a classic Susquehanna river town, with a history based in lumber and industry. It's also the largest town in central Pennsylvania that doesn't have a brewery, or any kind of booze producer. What it does have is two pioneering beer bars, the Old Corner Grill and the Broken Axe. Your hosts talk about The Foundling, the Heist, and the Volcano, the second novel in K.R.R. Lockhaven's Azure Archipelago trilogy. It does provide what it says on the tin, but it also contains a whole lot of great relationships and a heavy dose of wholesome horniness. They go back and forth on whether this book counts as “cozy,” but are in staunch agreement that the antagonists play their roles exceedingly well. This episode also features a Words are Weird segment on the word “tiddly” (no google, Lilly wasn't looking for tiddies). If you enjoyed this episode, K.R.R. Lockhaven has a kickstarter project for his upcoming cozy fantasy novel. They also visit the pet peeve corner, where Sara complains about how no one but Lockhaven seems to have figured out an enjoyable way to include songs in books (yes, we're looking at you, Tolkien).More from KRRL on Twitterand on his websiteFind the book on Amazon hereThanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Amarià for the use of “Sérénade à Notre Dame de Paris”- Josh Woodward for the use of “Electric Sunrise”Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License

Want to learn to fly Paramotors? http://www.ParamotorArkansas.com E 128 Steve English https://www.youtube.com/user/stephen1english I grew up watching the birds from the moment I could form memories, always wishing I could be up there with them. I have memories of building model planes and white wings, playing in the backyard with foamies, watching the planes land and take off from Piper Memorial Airport in Lock Haven, PA, all with dad. We shared a fondness for aviation. In college, I pursued my pilot's license with the intent to fly commercially. Got my PPL in the summer between freshmen and sophomore year in 2004. It was one of the proudest moments of my life, the next day after my checkride, I took my dad up as my first passenger...3 months later, I lost him to lung cancer. Fast forward to 2018, I haven't flown since 2005 and I come across Tucker's flight to McDonald's. At that moment, my life took a turn for the better and I knew I had to get back into flying through this. Eventually, I dove in and signed up for training 2 years later at AviatorPPG, and had another extremely moving moment with my first solo there. It was Judson's first class when he was an intern and I remember the hug from him and the rest of my new family at the time. That was summer 2020, my silver lining of the year. Since then, I have flown almost every chance I could, while wanting to share the joy with the world through pics and vids. JP Tulo is a big inspiration for the type of quick, catchy content I like to mess around with. In May, this year, I experienced the shared deep sadness from the loss of a dear friend, Jeff Chorba. Anytime he wasn't there, the question my parabuddies and I always asked was "what's Jeff up to, is he coming?" He mentored us, he laughed with us, he inspired us to be better pilots. Coping with his loss has brought us NEPA fliers closer together. I often think about what Jeff once told me over the phone, "we know the risks, but we do it anyway because if we deprive ourselves of that which we love, we also deprive ourselves of life." He and my Dad now share the view through my eyes of the awe this sport has to deliver.

On March 3 1994, a major storm belted the eastern states, heavy rains fell along the east coast and heavy snow piled up in the interior. As much as 30” of snow buried parts of central PA. This intense storm resulted in the establishment of many seasonal snowfall records in the region. The snow was accompanied by frequent thunder and lightning in some locations. These thunder snows, acting much like downpours of rain in the summertime – gave downpours of snow that mounted up, in some places to 4-5 inches in a single hour. Along the East Coast, on the I-95 corridor, there was more than 2” of rain accompanied by wind gusts over 60 mph and urban street flooding and flooding along streams; 25 foot waves crashed on to Cape Hatteras, NC. A snow avalanche buried 5 cars under 20 feet of snow, trapping the occupants for 28 hours before rescue in the Pennsylvania Mountains of Clinton County. 28" of snow fell at State College PA; 24" at Lock Haven, PA.
