Out of all the ancient moral philosophies, which one feels most applicable to how we live our lives in the modern world? As today's guest would say, we are all Epicureans now.Catherine Wilson is an emerita professor of philosophy at the University of York. She's written many books on the subject of ethics and philosophy, including How to Be an Epicurean: The Ancient Art of Living Well and Moral Animals: Ideals and Constraints in Moral Theory.Catherine and Greg talk about Epicureanism's relevance in the modern world, how it contrasts with other ancient philosophies like stoicism, and debate the role of prudence in the  pursuit of pleasure.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why should we all be thinking about getting up to speed or at least exposing ourselves to ancient moral philosophy?02:42: Epicureanism has been underappreciated relative to the other ancient philosophies. As we all know, Stoicism has become incredibly popular. Epicureanism is, in many ways, the foil to Stoicism. And frankly, I wouldn't go to Aristotle or Plato, particularly for moral advice. Some good parts of it, but I think Epicureanism needed a fresh look. And so what I tried to do in the book was to draw out some ways, possibly more fetch than they needed to be, some lessons or some implications that we could use now, taken directly from Epicurus and Lucretius. So that was the idea, and I think Epicureanism is really a breath of fresh air in many ways. What makes Epicureanism appealing?31:11: One of the most appealing features of Epicureanism is that because nature is always making new combinations and presenting you with new experiences, you're constantly having to update your beliefs and rethink your assumptions.Epicurean perspective on meaning41:01: The epicurean perspective is cosmological. It says you are here for a very short amount of time in the history of the universe. You came from dust; you're going to end up in dust. What you should do in that short time is have a nice life. Do the things you enjoy doing. And learning, teaching, figuring things out, and taking part in family life—those are the things that usually give people the most satisfaction in life. As human beings, that's what we like to do. So, you don't have to go to excess. What accounts for the renewed success of stoicism? 39:10: Stoicism says, well, you are you, and you are a fortress in yourself, and you have to not be so worried about what other people are doing that is making you miserable and believe that it's under your control whether you're miserable or not. And this seems to me completely on the wrong track when other people in other situations are making you miserable. You ought to try to change them. Speak up, or get out of there. "Don't Suffer in Silence" was, I think, the title of one of the chapters. And I think I referred there to Albert Hirschman. How do you respond to bad situations? On this week's Hemp Podcast, I recap my recent visit to the Heart of Europe, the Golden City, the City of a Hundred Spires, the capital city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia — Prague. The occasion for my trip was the European Industrial Hemp Association's 21st annual Conference, this year held in the Czech Republic. I was invited to be part of an American delegation representing the American hemp industry. The trip was funded through a grant from the USDA Market Access Program, or MAPS. The Market Access Program allows the Foreign Agricultural Service, the FAS, to partner with American trade associations, cooperatives, trade groups and small business “to share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities,” according to the USDA website. The National Industrial Hemp Council was given official cooperator status by the USDA earlier this year, giving it access to MAP funding. At the conference, I witnessed my fellow Americans developing relationships and making business deals, and I saw the purpose of the USDA's Market Access Program playing out in real time. During the conference, I interviewed over 30 hemp people from around the world. On this episode we'll hear what people had to say about hemp in Europe, what the U.S. can learn from the Europeans, what the Europeans can learn from the U.S., and a whole lot more. Before the conference started June 5, Lorenza Romanese, managing director of the European Industrial Hemp Association, was hopeful for a successful event. “I hope that people will engage. I hope that people will go back home knowing more than what they knew when they arrived,” she said. “I hope that they are able to develop business opportunities.” Francesco Mirizzi is senior policy advisor at EIHA and focuses on the fiber and grain sectors. He said the fiber industry is well developed in Europe, thanks in large part to farmers and processors in France. “We kept production in Europe after the Second World War, and we have something like seven or eight big size decortication facilities that allowed us to build a market for fiber,” he said, “mostly dedicated to specific paper application composites, and especially in the automobile industry, and fibers for insulation material in construction and chives (hurd) for construction, like hempcrete.” An epicenter of hemp construction in Europe is war-torn Ukraine, less than 800 miles to the east of Prague. Sergiy Kovalenkov is a Ukranian hemp builder who has been teaching refugees displaced by Russia's war on Ukraine how to rebuild with hemp. “We train the refugees, the people that lost their houses. And they started to build their own homes during the war using local biomass,” he said. “So when you tell me you have problems, trust me, let's go to Ukraine. I'll show you what problems are,” he said. Hana Gabrielová, a recent podcast guest, is from Czech Republic and was instrumental in bringing the conference to her home country. She has worked with hemp for over 20 years and is involved in many ares of hemp in Europe, including as a board member of EIHA as well as a member of the CzecHemp Cluster, an advisory board to help guide and grow the Czech hemp industry domestically and abroad. Gabrielová was very kind to me, pointing me in the right direction on Czech food, restaurants, pilsner, and what I should see while visiting this ancient city. She recommended the svíčková (pronounced sveech-covah), which she described as the national dish consisting of a root vegetable cream sauce and high quality beef sirloin, served with dumplings. It was good. As for what to see in Prague, she said I should see the astronomical clock in Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge over the River Vltava. “They are not far from each other,” she said. “Prague is not too big so you can walk it out and have a nice afternoon and see everything basically,” she said. I took her advice and wandered around the city each day after the conference ended. I cannot express to you how impressive the city was to me, with its ancient streets of cobblestone and castles and medieval fortresses. So much history in one place. But not all ancient history. I was inspired to learn more about the Velvet Revolution that took place in 1989. It started as student protests against the one party rule of the Czechoslovakian Communist Party. Within a week, the crowd grew to over 500,000 people in Wenceslas Square, shaking their house keys, telling the communists to step down and go home. It worked. By the end of the month, the party relinquished control over the people. I think we can all learn lessons from this story. We the people hold the power. We meet Lucie on Halloween morning, at a bus stop by a pier that is festooned with flyers with the names and faces of missing children.  She's soon picked us by Catherine Wilson, a wisecracking nurse who makes house calls to elderly residents.  Lucie, who is interning for Ms. Wilson, is none too happy about the work, and at the end of her first day, relates her experiences to her friends Will and Ben over beers at the local pub.  Will is a fisherman who works for his father, and Ben works for his mother at the pub.  Like Lucie, the boys aren't thrilled with the quality of their lives – and so they hatch a plan to break into the home of one of Ms Wilson's patients, the comatose Ms. Jessel, whose house allegedly contains treasure which will, the kids hope, set them on the paths to prosperity.  There's just one catch:  Ms. Jessel's home is not what it seems.  Nor is Ms. Wilson.  And when the residents of the home extend a hearty welcome to the thieving trio, the result is a Halloween night of chaos and spiritual mayhem that changes their lives forever. Despite the rampant success of books like Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, intellectual circles tend to look down on anything that sells itself as self-help. And yet, in a certain light, the most original form of self-help might actually be philosophy—an older and more respected genre, even, than the novel. So this week, we're going back to the past and asking that old chestnut: what is a meaningful life? The Stoics are awfully popular these days, but the philosopher Catherine Wilson joins us this episode to pitch a different kind of Greek: Epicurus, whose teachings live on most fully in Lucretius's On the Nature of Things. For a few centuries, Epicurus was wrongly remembered as the patron saint of whoremongers and drunkards, but he really wasn't: his philosophy is rich with theories of justice, empiricism, pleasure, prudence, and equality (Epicurus, unlike the Stoics, welcomed women and slaves into his school). Epicureanism advocated for a simple life, something that appeals to more and more people today with the return to artisan crafts, self-sufficiency, and, yes, the KonMari method.Go beyond the episode:Catherine Wilson's How to Be an EpicureanRead A. This week, Catherine Wilson submitted this topic: “Here's a topic I'd like to hear the younger generation's take on. With the over 65 generation soon to outnumber the younger generations and so many of us old farts dealing with cancer (me), heart disease, dementia, and just plain old age, how does you generation deal with the emotional, physical and time demands a loved ones illness might impose on you? How does it affect your generation seeing the frailty of the folks who raised you?”With reproduction rates less than what caused the baby boomer movement, younger people are being outnumbered by older aging generations. We discuss our personal experience with losing those close to us, and how it shaped us as we age. Plus, how we manage our focus and thoughts to cherish the moments we're having with our aging loved ones, rather than mourning their physical decline. Also, how our faith empowers us to take on the struggle of losing those close to us, through a trust that more will follow our life on Earth. Then, conspiracy theories abound as gas prices spike in America - many people believing this all has to do with a push to go electric. While John does believe there could be a push from a financial standpoint, many people think the move is for the government to control your movements. But spoiler alert: they already can. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, intellectual circles tend to look down on anything that sells itself as self-help. And yet, in a certain light, the most original form of self-help might actually be philosophy—an older and more respected genre, even, than the novel. So this week, we’re going back to the past and asking that old chestnut: what is a meaningful life? The Stoics are awfully popular these days, but the philosopher Catherine Wilson joins us this episode to pitch a different kind of Greek: Epicurus, whose teachings live on most fully in Lucretius’s On the Nature of Things. For a few centuries, Epicurus was wrongly remembered as the patron saint of whoremongers and drunkards, but he really wasn’t: his philosophy is rich with theories of justice, empiricism, pleasure, prudence, and equality (Epicurus, unlike the Stoics, welcomed women and slaves into his school). Since it’s almost June, the Gay Month, today I wanna ask for some LGBT recs! In the past I’ve read The Price of Salt, My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness (RECOMMEND btw!!!), On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Brown, White, Black, The Song of Achilles, and probably others I can’t remember. I already have Ari & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Red, White & Royal Blue, Juliet Takes a Breath, Freshwater, An Unkindness of Ghosts, and It’s a Whole Spiel on my TBR. It would be great if you could recommend 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction, particularly looking for something by a female or nonbinary author, bonus points if they are NOT from the US/UK (or even Europe) as I’m trying to read about experiences other than my own. –Dee 2. COVID-19 Reading Recs: I am a healthcare worker, and this pandemic has been challenging both personally and professionally. My colleagues and I have been working 24/7 to support our community through this difficult time. I am proud to serve my patients, but I am feeling increasingly isolated as this pandemic stretches on. I am in a long distance marriage, and due to travel restrictions in place from my organization, I am not sure when I will be able to see my husband or my family again. I always turn to books in times of crisis, and am having trouble concentrating on my usual genres. What I am hoping for in my reading life is some light fluffy romance with lots of banter, particularly with depictions of strong sibling relationships and/or found families. Some comps would be the Bridgerton series or The Governess Game by Tessa Dare. I know this is a very specific request, and would appreciate any and all recommendations. Thank you so much! –Niki 3. Since quarantine started, I’ve been mostly craving mystery/thrillers and lately (after hearing you describe Death by Dumpling), I’ve been wanting to pick up some cozy mysteries! I love that they’re bingeable and that there’s usually tons more in the series. I think I’m gonna pick 5-10 cozies, read them all and choose my favorite to continue on. I love the Inspector Gamache series (not really a cozy), Riley Sagar thrillers, I recently loved The Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight, The City We Became by NK Jemisin and the Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. I don’t care to read much historical fiction. I’m always trying to read from a diversity of authors, especially women of color. What are your fave cozies? And do they need to be read in order? –Tara 4. TIME SENSITIVE: I am going on a trip to Charleston and Savannah, and would love some recommendations for books set in either/both of these places. I’ve already read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I am open to any genre and would love anything to get me excited about the upcoming trip! *Also would love any recommendations for independent bookstores in the area, if you know of any!* –Netta 5. My 13-year-old daughter and I are starting a mother-daughter book club for the two of us, thanks to our forced-pandemic-togetherness time. Especially with school ending soon, I hope this is a good way to have some structure as well as fun. We are starting with Pet, by Akwaeke Emezi, and I am looking for recommendations for what we should read next. Some of her favorite books are The Westing Game, The War that Saved my Life, and the Percy Jackson books. I read lots of fantasy, mystery, romance, and some literary fiction – recent faves include The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai, CL Polk’s Kingston cycle books, and Gail Carriger’s Soulless series. My daughter requests nothing that would embarrass to her talk about with her mom (a little swearing is ok, but no explicit sex on the page), and neither of us like graphic violence. Thank you for your help! –Alicia 6. Hi! I love your show! I’ve gotten so many good quirky books with unusual characters or premises…like 1980s high school field hockey team dabbles in witchcraft…or characters like a wyverary (mother was a wyvern, father was a library)…or washed up rock band has to compete in universe-wide battle of the bands to prove that humans are sentient and save the planet? I enjoy most genres, so it’s not limited to fantasy! –Kaitlyn 7. Hi there! Recently I’ve become interested in house plants, and I’ve absolutely loved reading “How to Houseplant: A Beginner’s Guide to Making and Keeping Plant Friends” by Heather Rodino. I loved the author’s practical tips on finding the right light for your plants, watering, different kinds of soil, and what plant would be best for your space. I’m interested in learning more about plants (both indoor and outdoor) / gardening in general. I’d love to read something else that is along the same lines as “How to Houseplant.” Perhaps a step up from beginner but not quite expert. I’d love to hear any recommendations you might have! This week we're joined by Catherine Wilson, Managing Director of UK-based CBD and Hemp company - Cannawell, and Vice President of The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA).Together, we discuss the evolving categorisation of cannabis under the Novel Foods Regulations, EIHA's ‘Hemp Manifesto', and why UK hemp legislation needs to change.About CatherineCatherine has been a leading voice in the hemp CBD world since 2015.  She is VP of the European Industrial Hemp Association(EIHA) and MD of CannaWell; previously she worked in the environment sector which fuels her passion for hemp as a carbon negative raw material suitable for multiple applications from low tech to high tech across virtually all industry sectors.  Her current focus is Novel Foods, how to unlock the full potential of this unique plant and achieve legislative change to permit the use of the whole plant.Episode Summary Catherine came across CBD in 2014 when a friend gave her a bottle to try. After some research, Catherine decided to import some from the USA who were the most experienced producers at the time.Cannawell was set up by Catherine in early 2015 with a single consignment of goods and has grown into a flourishing company who are now one of the longest established CBD companies in the UK.The Hemp Manifesto was released by EIHA in April 2020 and serves as a roadmap, aiming to  underscore hemp's potential for reducing climate change and to unlock the potential of the whole plant. It looks at how we can recognise hemp as a valuable raw material, bringing it into major product manufacturing across construction, plastic alternative, textiles etc.Hemp is an environmentally beneficial and unique crop, but in the UK farmers can only cultivate the stems and seeds. The leaves and flowers fall under the category of Cannabis without exemption, and so are a controlled substance.Catherine believes that the hemp plant has a number of powerful applications, but people are not using it because of the legislative difficulties involved with its cultivation. In the UK, a license is needed to grow the crop.Hemp can be compared to crude oil in the sense that it has so much potential, but needs to be refined. In the UK at the moment, we don't have the equivalent processing infrastructure to turn biomass into suitable materials for further manufacturing. Therefore, we can't attract investment into this area, especially when the legislation around this area is hostile and outdated. In 2016, legislative confusion began when the MHRA issued a letter to some CBD sellers for making health claims. Catherine later joined the advisory board in late 2016 because of her previous experience in environmental compliance. In 1997, the EU introduced the Novel Foods Catalogue, which helps to protect consumers from potentially dangerous foods. Cannabis Sativa L (industrial hemp) was included in this catalogue. A Novel Food is defined as food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997, when the first Regulation on novel food came into force. 'Novel Foods' can be newly developed, innovative food, food produced using new technologies and production processes, as well as food which is or has been traditionally eaten outside of the EU.In 2016, Cannabidiol was entered into the catalogue stating that as long as the CBD does not contain more CBD than is naturally found in the plant, it is a food. If it contains more than is naturally found in the plant, it becomes a novel food. Please see full show notes here: https://www.cannabis-conversation.com/blogs/episode65

The popular view of an Epicurean is that of somebody who focuses on pleasure as our guiding principle, indulging in the finer things of life to achieve happiness. And yet what the Ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus understood by pleasure was far more nuanced. In fact, Epicurus and his followers advocated a simple lifestyle, withdrawn from society, where we are content with little. What is perhaps less known is how Epicurean writings on physics foreshadowed some of the most significant developments in early modern science – including Darwin's theory of evolution and even Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Joining Bridget Kendall is Catherine Wilson, visiting Professor at the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York, and the author of various works on Epicureanism, including How to Be an Epicurean: The Ancient Art of Living Well; Dr Sonya Wurster, Honorary Fellow at La Trobe University in Australia who's working on a book about the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus; and philosopher and historian David Sedley, Emeritus Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, and the author of numerous publications on Greek and Roman thought. Episode 54 of the Sheffield Digital Podcast features two interviews that will hopefully help you understand the COVID-19 measures put in place to support businesses, employees and people who are self-employed.  First, we spoke to Carys Thompson, Catherine Wilson and Matt Ainsworth from legal firm and Sheffield Digital associate sponsor, Keebles. They answered some of the common legal questions that came up in our recent survey to find out how the digital community is being affected.  Our second interview was with Martin Dean, Dave Robinson and Tom Whitworth from another associate sponsor, Shorts, who approached the measures from a more financial point of view. Again, our questions were informed by the things we know the city’s digital community are looking for clarity on.  You can find the latest help and support update from Shorts (https://blog.shorts.uk.com/covid-19-help-support-update) over on the company’s website.  We plan to publish show notes and a transcript of this episode as soon as possible.  Note: the episode was recorded on Friday 27 March, so please do check to see if the information discussed is still up to date when you listen.  Subscribe to the show If you’d like to have new episodes of the show appear right in your podcast player, you can subscribe via our page on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/sheffield-digital-podcast/id1272667962?mt=2) or search for us in your podcast app of choice! In this wide-ranging conversation the philosopher Catherine Wilson makes the case that if the pursuit of happiness is the question, Epicureanism is the answer. Not the mythic Epicureanism that calls to mind gluttons with gout or an admonition to eat, drink, and be merry. Instead, in her new book How to Be an Epicurean, Wilson shows that Epicureanism isn’t an excuse for having a good time: it’s a means to live a good life. Although modern conveniences and scientific progress have significantly improved our quality of life, many of the problems faced by ancient Greeks — love, money, family, politics — remain with us in new forms. To overcome these obstacles, the Epicureans adopted a philosophy that promoted reason, respect for the natural world, and reverence for our fellow humans. By applying this ancient wisdom to a range of modern problems, from self-care routines and romantic entanglements to issues of public policy and social justice, Wilson shows us how we can all fill our lives with purpose and pleasure. Wilson and Shermer also discuss: the hedonic treadmill and the problem of pursuing material goods why money will not bring you happiness or meaning eternal moral truths judging figures from the past by modern moral standards why she thinks everyone from Thomas Jefferson to Joe Biden should have known better and acted differently why she thinks Jeffrey Epstein committing suicide was a rational choice for him how to think about the abortion issue why we need not fear death, and how to lead a meaningful life. Catherine Wilson received her PhD in philosophy from Princeton University and has taught at universities in the US, Canada, and Europe. She has published more than 100 research papers and eight books, including A Very Short Introduction to Epicureanism and Metaethics from a First-Person Standpoint: An Introduction to Moral Philosophy. She has two children and lives in New York City, where she is currently Visiting Presidential Professor of Philosophy at the Graduate Center at CUNY. Despite the rampant success of books like Mari Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, intellectual circles tend to look down on anything that sells itself as self-help. And yet, in a certain light, the most original form of self-help might actually be philosophy—an older and more respected genre, even, than the novel. So this week, we're going back to the past and asking that old chestnut: what is a meaningful life? The Stoics are awfully popular these days, but the philosopher Catherine Wilson joins us this episode to pitch a different kind of Greek: Epicurus, whose teachings live on most fully in Lucretius’s On the Nature of Things. Epicureanism advocated for a simple life, something that appeals to more and more people today with the return to artisan crafts, self-sufficiency, and, yes, the KonMari method.Go beyond the episode:Catherine Wilson’s How to Be an EpicureanRead A. If the word ‘epicurean’ brings to mind a porcine man in a toga reclining on a velvet couch and dropping fat juicy grapes into his open mouth, one by one, you are not alone. But this caricature, probably the descendent of some ancient propaganda by rival philosophers, tells us very little in fact about Epicureanism - the worldview of the 4th century BCE Greek philosopher Epicurus and his later disciple Lucretius, whose ideas prefigured and shaped much of the modern world. My guest today is philosopher Catherine Wilson, author of the book How to be an Epicurean: The Ancient Art of Living Well. At a confusing cultural moment where many people are looking for a guiding framework, she’s here with a strident defense of Epicureanism as a way of life. In its pragmatic approach to embracing pleasure and minimizing pain, she sees a saner way of living in the world. And maybe enjoying a few juicy grapes while you’re at it.
