POPULARITY
Patricia Lorenzoniidéhistoriker och författareLitteratur:IRWIN (red): State in Time. The latest album from Slovenian old gods Laibach is an abrupt shift from the sterner and harsher work they've been releasing for the past half decade or so, and turns to the recent history of pop music to comment on, well, pop music. Musick bears many of the hallmarks of Laibach's satirizing of popular culture and its intersection with politics and the world at large, but what precisely are they saying this time out? That's the question we delve into on this week's podcast.

Piše Jože Štucin, bereta Eva Longyka Mrušič in Igor Velše. (...) Neskončnost je Nadnič."

As is our custom when there's a new record from industrial legends Laibach, we're taking to the podcast to discuss it rather than simply knocking out a review. A deeply collaborative record between Slovenian and Iranian musicians, Alamut is a record steeped in history and which draws together diverse strands of Laibach's own musical past and future as well as contemporary art music composition from around the world.
Dirk Laibach, global senior product manager for water mist at Johnson Controls, covers potential fire risks associated with industrial fryers, the differences between CO2 and water mist technologies, and the role detection plays in fire suppression systems. Headshot courtesy of Laibach

In this week's episode we address, in real time, the unfolding calamity that Ye (the artist formerly known as Kanye West) has unleashed upon the world with his new controversial single “He*l H*tler” from his upcoming album “Cuck.” As of recording this episode it has been banned on nearly every platform on the internet but has gone viral anyway and has evolved into a cultural phenomena that has left the majority of us confused, offended and, if we're honest, uncomfortably amused. While burying our heads in the sand is a good enough solution for some, we hope to apply our god given gifts of discernment to meet this cultural phenomena head on, dissect exactly how fascist movements form and how art is used to either fuel or foil it. We discuss not just the historical context of Ye's new single but unpack some of the esoteric symbolism therein to help us weigh out not just its hidden messages how much of this stunt is satire and how much is serious. What we discover is deep, dark and full of enough nuance to promise that anyone daring enough to take a glimpse will have plenty to consider when making up their own damn minds. It's ok to let people do that sometimes, you know… Thank you and enjoy the show! Strani polni s stvarnim, energetsko nabitim posvečanjem partnerki v polnokrvni duhovni in telesni predaji, predstavljeni brez moralističnih in jezikovnih zadržkov. V izrazito patriarhalnem okolju to deluje bodrilno in osvobodilno in v tej domeni Hanino-Pupino sorodstvo doživi zaslužen pretres, ko zaljubljena protagonista na neki drugi, kulturno sprejemljivejši poroki škandalozno razglasita nedavno svojo. Poleg osrednje tematike, učinkovito podajane v jedrnatih dialogih, besedilo vsebuje kratke odstavke o dogodkih in idejah iz obče kulture, kakor jih vrednoti izobražen in toleranten ateist. Prikazi Hanine-Pupine družine in pripovedovalčevih beograjskih prijateljev, s katerimi se druži ob sotočju Donave in Save, kljub popitemu in pokajenemu delujejo precizno kritično in sveže nabrito.

Gostje bodo: Primož Kristan, generalni sekretar Slovenskega glasbenoinformacijskega centra SIGIC; Andraž Kajzer, umetniški direktor in vodja festivala MENT; Maša Pavokovič, glasbena menedžerka in predstavnica za odnose z javnostmi; Rok Košir, glasbeni agent in direktor glasbene agencije Most.

In zdaj k političnim konotacijam obiska v Ameriki.

In this episode John Paul Kleiner (GDR Objectified blog) speaks with Attila the Stockbroker, an English poet, musician and songwriter with roots in the punk movement and socialist politics. During his forty year career as independent artist, Attila has produced numerous albums and books and performed more than 3,800 shows including many in the GDR and, after unification, eastern Germany. In this conversation, Attila vividly recalls his visits to the East, the people whom he met there and aspects of the Workers and Peasants State which were an inspiration and other which left him disgusted. Find Attila's active Facebook page by clicking here. Learn more about his books and albums on Bandcamp There's a great mini-doc of Attila done a few years back by filmmaker Farouq Suleiman that gives a great sense of his energy and art on YouTube here. You can hear poem and song “This is Free Europe” inspired by Attila's experiences at a 1992 gig in Hoyerswerda here. Glossary of terms Laibach: a Slovenian based music group / avant-garde art project which incorporates totalitarian aesthetics into a variety of musical styles to unsettling effect. A-Levels: university qualifying exams for British secondary school students John Peel was a DJ for the BBC between 1967 and 2004 during which time he helped popularize a number of musical genres including psychedelic and progressive rock as well as punk. New Town Neurotics are an English melodic punk band formed in 1979 and whose work took a decidedly political turn with the advent of Thatcherism in the U.K. It was through his connections to this group that Attila first made his way to the GDR. In the 1980s, the multiethnic London neighbourhood of Brixton was best known as a site of great social unrest due to widespread poverty and strained relations between residents and police. In more recent years, the area has undergone considerable gentrification, but echoes of Buna and Leuna: in the GDR-era, these two large-scale chemical combines were essential economic drivers and creators of truly appalling environmental degradation. Read more on the impact these facilities had on the East German environment in this post from the GDR Objectified blog. Bündnis 90 / Alternative Linke: Alliance '90 and Alternative Left were left-oriented political movements which emerged from the foment of anti-SED protests in the mid- to late-1980s in the GDR. Die Skeptiker (The Sceptics) are a German punk band originally formed in East Berlin in 1986. While critical of the realities of ‘real-existing socialism', the band were keen to carve out a place for themselves in the GDR music scene and used opportunities open to them within the system (incl. officially sanctioned live shows and appearances on GDR radio and new music compilation albums) to present their music to as wide an audience as possible. As Arcane Machine has evolved over the years, it's been fun discovering what kinds of moods and themes emerge based on Justin and Ed's selections. A very strong one emerged this Chapter, revolving around religion and the end of the world. You'll explore a “Dead Planet” from Front Line Assembly and wander “Cities in Dust” from Siouxsie and the Banshees. You'll pray for salvation with E Nomine's “Vater Unser.” And finally, you'll be treated to an in-depth examination of both Juno Reactor and Laibach's interpretations of “God is God.” Send your listener submissions/ suggestions to arcanemachinepodcast@gmail.com! We're joined this week by two of our Patreon backers, Stuart White and Richard Gould, to talk about albums they've each chosen: Bloodline, the reunion LP from formative UK goth-punk act 1919 which found them tackling resurgent political and economic crises, and the self-titled record from France's Les Clopes, which puts a bemused indie spin on some classic French coldwave and minimal wave sounds. We're also talking recent Laibach and festival news, plus some talk about a recent Moor Mother and Saul Williams show.

While both of the records we're talking about are from nominal side-projects, you couldn't get much further from one another in sound (and perhaps quality?) on the industrial spectrum than Santa Hates You's Crucifix Powerbomb and Anima Nostra's Atraments. We're also talking about the cost of live shows, Laibach's just-announced show in Kyiv, and a solid “goth for metalheads” list.
The new LP by industrial legends Laibach is the subject of this week's podcast. The band has perhaps never been more active, releasing a slew of soundtracks and other releases, but Sketches Of The Red Districts finds the band returning to both tWe're also talking about the new single from (occasional labelmates of Laibach) Depeche Mode.

Slovenian avant-gardists Laibach reboot the writings of one of the most significant German playwrights, Heiner Müller, into a theatrical production of his work. Epic in scope, “Ich wil ein Deutscher sein” translates to “I Want to Be a German.”
